Putin Calls for New ‘Eurasian Union’ of Former Soviet Countries

If re-elected president next year, Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin allegedly intends to create a “Eurasian Union” that includes former Soviet republics to serve as “a bridge” between Europe and Asia.
Further integrating the economies of existing customs union members Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, the new union would gradually expand to include Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, according to an editorial written by Putin that was published Tuesday in the Russian daily Izvestia.
“We won’t stop with this and have set an ambitious goal to reach the next, higher level of integration — the Eurasian Union,” wrote Putin.
The Eurasian Union, envisaged as “a powerful supranational body,” and ”an effective bridge between Europe and the dynamic Asia-Pacific region,” will encourage the accession of other countries, with CIS nations maintaining priority status, asserts Putin in his article.
Comparing the new body to the old Soviet Union, however, would be a mistake, said Putin. ”It’s naive to try to restore or copy what has already been left in the past, but tight integration on a new political, economic and value basis is the requirement of the time,” he added.
The Eurasian Union will be part of ”a greater Europe with common values of freedom, democracy and market laws,” providing “faster integration into Europe for its members,” said Putin.
Putin first floated the idea of a free-trade zone between Russia and the European Union in an article published in Germany’s Sueddeutsche Zeitung late last year. In the current Izvestia article, Putin again reiterates that Russia and Europe could form a free-trade zone stretching “from Lisbon to Vladivostok.”
The article further indicates that the Kremlin’s foreign policy objectives will likely shift toward strengthening ties with former Soviet republics once Putin is at the helm again next year. Russia will likely pursue a tougher foreign policy, one that’s focused on developing the post-Soviet region, according to Tatyana Stanovaya, a France-based analyst with the Center for Political Technologies.
Putin’s Izvestia article is “sort of a presidential manifest” aimed at outlining his initiatives upon his return to the Kremlin, said Alexei Portansky, a professor of global economy and policy at Moscow’s Higher School of Economics.
Though the idea of the Eurasian Union is not new one, it is still likely to take a while before it comes to fruition, because the customs union has yet to prove its ability to work properly, said Portansky. ”The economic crisis in Belarus in June proved that the customs union isn’t working the right way yet,” he added.
Putin, meanwhile, pointed out that the Eurasian Union is crucial to strengthening the global economy, because “the process of creating post-crisis models for global development is progressing with difficulties.”
Putin seems to believe that the way out of the current global financial crisis is through regional integration, citing the European Union, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, the North American Free Trade Agreement and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations as examples.
Many Kremlin observers, however, fear Putin’s true intentions are merely a desire to revive the old USSR.

It was a forced union of Eurasian states. The USSR is NOT dead. It is just DORMANT. They have a main leader who is ex-KGB. Why do you think he is there? As soon as we collapse (and I hope that does not happen)…the USSR will revive, communism and all.

The power brokers now…such as Putin, Obama, Chavez, Gore, Clinton and others, simply desire a seat at that table…looking to play in the big leagues, and court special favors of money, prestige and power…..in the end it‘s all about the control of the millions of Earth’s citizens by a scant group of rich men looking for the motherlode of a global central government.
They will control the money….and each decision that they can….even declaring guns as unsustainable, except those possessed by the UN.
then….it would be impossible to undo it….and nowhere to live free…

Someone loyal enough to the Communist cause to have remained faithful even through the troubled end of the Soviet Empire likely never gave up on Communism, or at least some form of autocratic governance and central “planning”.
This whole concept of “regions” has been stipulated by many as being the root of what some Communists hope will become a system of global autocracy. Logically, one transgresses national boundaries and identities slowly, but with the clear intent of eradicating cultural identities based upon nationality. The goal of Socialism is no identity whatsoever. You don’t even get a religion, and most of these sadists likely don’t think you need a name.
We need to watch this carefully. Long before this becomes a threat, though, Europe will need to have made a decision if they want to live or die, if they want to mature, or continue as children.
For our part, I think enough people are awake that we can carve out a future consistent with our resilience and resourcefulness as a people. We have a lot of stupid kids, but not all of them are stupid, and all of them are capable of learning, or so I hope.

Posted on October 5, 2011 at 8:15amIndeed, Putin is one of the most dangerous of people around on the planet; look for the rearisal of a USSR style of government again, with Rusia at the core of all that swirls around it. Putin knows that his time is now, and can start making it happen.
Right now though, there are two major stumbling blocks I do see Putin would have a hard time with to integrate in some kind of massive power block from Europe to Asia aside from the smaller ex soviet satellite states — Islam in Europe, and China.

But thanks to our insufferably arrogant fathers and grand-fathers who just felt so d-mn omnipotent so as to feel more than magnanimous when they just looked the other way when the commies took over the universities, and the media, and gov’t bureaucracies, because, after all, those jews are just so talented and their movies and shows are just so funny, and they have “suffered so much as a people” and WHAMM-O, America is no longer a Christian Nation, it is now a “Proposition Nation” where Christianity is no longer welcome in the public forum and the filthy muslim can actually sue for Halal meals while on death row. Thanks Hippies! Thanks Mom and Dad! You just “tolerated” me right out of my birthright! Hope the pot and pornography with which the jew seduced you was worth it. Keep “Standing with Israel” and never mind the nuclear arsenal that Russia is building, I am sure that is just another “internet rumor.”
