Rabbits Munch Away at Denver Man’s Eco-Friendly Car

Dexter Meyer says he recently returned to Denver International Airport after a trip and went to retrieve his car from the airport’s parking lot. After nine days, Meyer said he found that his car would barely start. A trip to the dealership revealed the problem: rodents had eaten through the car’s wiring.

According to Meyer, the dealership explained that small critters like rabbits and mice like to much on the car’s new wiring made up of a soy-based compound.

When Meyer later reported his problem to the airport, he says they told him they were “aware of the problem” and that “they were thinking about increasing patrols” of security guards to try and shoo bunnies away from the idle vehicles.

Closing thought: I wonder if the additional security officers on bunny patrol would technically be considered “green” jobs…

Here’s a better idea — go back to plastic.

What makes you think there aren’t rattlers out there already??? The new Denver airport is built about 15 miles east of the city, out on the open prairie!
Hate to tell you this though…rattlers generally won’t attack a rabbit (unless it’s a damn big snake) because they’re TOO BIG TO EAT!

      Silly damn city boy!

Worse yet, it’s very common to see rabbits chewing on electrical wiring in heavy construction equipment too. We (I work with heavy equipment) had a problem with a front end loader which would start, but wouldn’t go into gear to move. Looking into the problem, we found a rabbit IN THE MACHINE that had been eating the insulation (they eat plastic too). The problem was that we couldn’t get the rabbit to leave. Finally had to use a can of starting fluid (liquid ether under pressure) and squirt the fluid at the rabbit to force it to run…. So yes, you might say that we had a visit from the ETHER BUNNY!

Actually, a friend of mine here in the Houston area had rats chew through her car’s electrical wiring while it was in her garage – and she didn’t have a green car. I expect the soy-based stuff is much more appetizing.

Eco-friendly car chewed up as dinner by the bunny rabbits.

    This is so poetic.

Nothing against good vehicles, yet they should have forseen that items such as soy based materials are FOOD for critters.

Now how about this for the Progressives – let the eco extremists howl about how the new eco-cars are endangering the rabbits food sorurces with their eco-friendly wiring possibly shocking their sweet little bunny bodies.

Imagine that sight of their fit in the White House protesting the eco-damaging eco-cars!

Reminds me of the time a friend and I were hitchhiking down the west coast and we started heading inland in northern California we came across a guy with his head hung low over his engine just shaking it back and forth. We asked if we could help? He looked up and said in that surfer kind of tongue “I don’t know dudes squirrels ate my car”. It had appeared he had been up camping for a week and left his parents sixty thousand dollar Mecedes convertible parked at the base of the moutain, and squirrels decided to make it home.

Soy based polymers, or soy-based plastics, have been in commercial use since Henry Ford used them. They are not about being “green” as some ignorant people have assumed. They are used because they are economically more feasible for use. Since they are cheaper to produce and buy, they are also subject to more engineering and testing than more expensive synthetics such as those from petroleum or natural gas. They are nothing new and are not used to be “green”. One thing I have seen with in filed uses of soy-based plastics is that not all compounds using soy are attractive to animals. It is still hilarious, but Ms. Jessup , the author of this article, seems to have lost the reality of why it is funny.
