‘Race for the Cure’ Enrollment Numbers Take Staggering Hit Following Planned Parenthood Controversy

Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Numbers Down After Planned Parenthood Funding Controversy | St. Louis Numbers Drop From Roughly 70K to 40K

After briefly pulling its funding earlier this year, Susan G. Komen for the Cure has gone to great lengths to assure the public of its support for Planned Parenthood.  Though the foundation does not typically fund organizations that are under investigation, which is why it originally pulled the money, the Komen foundation quickly amended its policies to make them “right and fair,” thereby enabling the donations to continue.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure typically grants Planned Parenthood close to $600,000 annually, and this year its associated affiliates (particularly those in New Jersey) have made that number closer to $1.2 million.

“Planned Parenthood was found worthy in terms of its patient education and how they measure up to our priorities in meeting the needs of women and men in our community,” Komen North Jersey spokeswoman Kathi Edelson Wolder said of an independent panel’s review of their grant applicants.

So, how has this affected the public’s support for the Susan G. Komen’s Race for the Cure, an enormously popular event to cure breast cancer?

(Photo: AP)

According to CBS St. Louis, enrollment numbers for the large St. Louis Race for the Cure are down a staggering amount, from 71,000 two years ago to roughly 44,000 this year.

The CBS article, however, gives a different interpretation as to why numbers are so low.  Arguing it was really the brief suspension of donations that caused the change, the article reads:

Saturday’s annual Komen Race for the Cure is the first one to be held following Komen’s controversial decision to withdraw funding for breast exams from Planned Parenthod.

Even though the decision was quickly reversed, it was clear damage had been done to Komen’s reputation as many former supporters remained angry about the whole ordeal.

So far this year, Komen’s St. Louis chapter claims to have the second largest registration to this point, around 44,000…trailing only Rome Italy’s 50,000 or so.

But even this highly supportive city has seen a drop in numbers.

Perhaps it’s a mixture of both.  Either way, perhaps organizations that fund cancer research would do best if they didn’t involve themselves with organizations that provide late-term sex-selective abortions, or provide advice on trafficking underage sex-slaves to make it “look as legit as possible.”

Susan G. Komen for the Cure… is commiting fraud. It is a federal offense to say word “that you discovered a CURE.”

In a way…it is a great way to make money for Susan G. Komen . and helps the victims feel good.

I just found out from a concerned friend (I’m currently battling breast cancer stage 4, and have been for a year and a half), that there is a claim that B17 cures cancer. I ordered my book (A World Without Cancer) but it hasn’t come in yet. The medical community doesn’t want a cure for cancer, (especially one that is natural and you can’t copyright) because they would lose money, the drug companies would lose money, everyone but the patient loses. I’m going to try it. As for Susan G. Komen, they charge survivors a huge fee to participate. It’s not like you can just walk in the walk, you have to register and pay. And you have to raise THOUSANDS of $$ for the 3 Day walk. it‘s a money market and the money doesn’t go to research. How about they research B17?

I don’t believe all these people that were supporting and donating to Susan N Komen knew they were also supporting planned parenthood. That‘s also why I don’t give to United Way – They divide all your money to all these fringe charities that people would not normally support! Well the secrets out now – your money was going to baby killers!

Please check out Suzanne Sommers’s latest books. She used herself as a guinea pig. She details what cures are working for breast cancer. In Pittsburgh, Pa we have cancer institutes and more BUT some doctors out there are getting results with other than chemo and radiation (which are devastating to the body). Cancer is BIG BUSINESS and the conventional methods are being promoted and the new methods are being struck down as fake. NOT TRUE. Promising results are being seen.

      To loriann12 –

You’re in my prayers right now as I type. I lost a cousin and a half sister to cancer this year alone. I wouldn’t touch the Komen Foundation with a ten foot pole. If I’m going to give a memorial gift (and I will be) it will be to Sloan Kettering or some other institution that provides direct services to cancer patients. Komen doesn’t and neither does Planned Parenthood.

I think it behooves people to research the organizations that they give carefully. Also alternative medicine and treatments are on the rise as the specter of Obamacare looms on the horizon.

God bless you and keep you in His loving hands.

Women are not idiots, we get mammograms and pap smears regularly. People are angry about the misrepresentation. I had a sister die from breast cancer in 1999 and would love to find a cure but I will never support this organization because I don’t feel they will ever “find a cure” and planned parenthood is not an organization I wish to support with my dollars or time.

A few years back I called on this foundation for help for a friend dying of Cancer, so many of us had chipped in with day care and housing costs etc…all the things that still need to be paid when a person is unable and after about 10 min. on phone speaking to various Komen Foundation “departments” I discovered that they can only give $150.00 maximum to each cancer patient and ….and… she would have had to fill out numerous papers in a process that would have taken 6 weeks or more. She was dead in 4 weeks. I knew then that Komen is a big fraud. Instead of having emergency help for children of dying patients and relief for the patient, they expected her to jump through hoops for a paltry $ 150. We just let it go and did it ourselves, but never, ever, would I donate to that ‘foundation’— I saw later where they’d had fundraiser making millions.
Most of these “foundations” provide cushy jobs for their “Presidents” etc. but nothing for the CAUSE it seems. Wounded Warriors is an exception..they really do great work and there are a handful like WW. But the Pres. of the RED CROSS who lives in Laguna Beach or Newport Beach pulls in More than quarter of a Million dollars in salary plus lives in penthouse overlooking pacific. That’s like a minister driving a rolls royce… Silly, awful people. I think a lot is going to change when Romney gets elected. I think we’ve seen how bad the other side can be, time for Honor again.

Before the Race in Detroit the Detroit News ran an article about the reduced numbers of racers enrolled. The article gave three examples of women who were upset about the temporary suspension of funds to Planned Parenthood. Not one person who withdrew donations for on moral grounds of funding PP was interviewed. I emailed the reporter and she admitted the story was not balanced but due to her “deadline” she was not able to offer the “other sides” rational for not donating and/or participating.

All indications are that our society is becoming more pro-life. People are starting to see the evil of abortion and that it is not what it was sold to be (equal rights for women) especially in light of the fact that female babies are being aborted simply for being female. It is eugenics plain and simple, create the “master race”. Lets weed out the disabled and the minorities (PP founders goal).

Abortion is a sacrament to the Left. Once they gained control of Komen they realized they could direct the cancer research dollars to Planned Parenthood and did so. The predictable result is a huge downsizing of Komen but the leftist zealots in charge won’t change their behavior. Promoting the sacrament of abortion is way too important. A good analogy is the takeover of the Episcopal Church by the homosexual lobby and ordaining a gay clergyman in direct opposition to centuries old church doctrine. The victors knew the Episcopal Church would split but cared not. Advancing the homosexual cause by seeming to legitimize that behavior was all that mattered.

If I need $20 to pay for part of an abortion, and $20 to pay for a mammogram, and $20 to pay the doctor, and I get 3 people to donate $20 each, how do I justify which person paid for what? It all goes in the pocket, and you draw one out. My $20 donation would just free up money that could have gone to good things to pay for abortions. You think people donate money to PP and designate they want it to go only to aborting black babies? Oh, wait, I think they have that on hidden video, don’t they?

I’m a Family Practice physician and had, for years, donated to the SG Komen foundation, until I found out they were funding Planned Parenthood. PP is a multi-billion dollar a year industry whose earnings places them firmly in the Fortune 500. They don’t need 300-plus million dollars a year PUBLIC (i.e. – taxpayer-funded) support much less money that is best used by SG Komen and researchers in breast cancer and in preventive services. The OTHER issue is what is referred to as the ABC connection, with close to 40 studies and meta-analyses of available data leading to the suggestion of but not direct link of Abortion to Breast Cancer. So the SG Komen foundation donates money to another organization which makes its primary source of income off a procedure which MAY be linked to the condition SG Komen was established to find a cure for. Ironic. So I stopped advertising at the race for the cure events. Screw ‘em.

I will repeat this thought,”Does the unborn child have an exact, mirror image of the mothers dna? No, the child does not! The dna is slightly different from the mother (and the father, I might add) who claims it is her right, her body. How can it be a part of her body if the dna does not match 100%”!

I have never understood the libs argument that somehow you are oppressing women by limiting abortion. Abortion is about life and death and what kind of a society we are going to be. As a woman, I have a choice to keep my pants on, I have a choice to use birth control, I have a choice to take the morning after pill, and if I am so brain dead as to have failed in those three choices, there is adoption. No one who is for abortion has ever been able to answer for me, what is the difference between having an abortion and giving birth to a baby and dropping it in a dumpster? NONE! We are either a culture of life or of death. Kill babies that might be a burden to us, how about grandma (her health is failing), that disabled child (how much can their life be worth, really) lets just put them down like dogs. There was a time when society thought blacks were not people and could be abused, enslaved and killed (and the Supreme Court agreed). We woke up from that moral nightmare, and it is my hope we will wake up from this one soon. History will remember this time, much like we remember slavery. And ironically the same people are on the same sides, Liberal Democrats=slavery and now abortion, Conservative, Christian Republicans=abolitionists and now pro-life. Evil has not changed it’s stripes.

A baby has a right to life because as soon as it is born it begins to exercise free will, and it starts to perceive the world through its senses which is as good a point as any to call the beginning of forming a human mind. So, throwing babies in dumpsters is bad. Killing fetuses before they are born is good. Stupid people who don’t think about the consequences of their actions having kids is bad. People who would punish others for being stupid and not thinking about the consequences of their actions by forcing them to have children are the worst people in the world.

Say Chet, as a Planned Parenthood supporter, I realize you have no regard for killing babies, but are you also saying you support Planned Parenthood‘s policy of shielding pedophiles or it’s policy of accepting donations to, “help destroy a baby of a certain race”?

      You make me sick Chet!
My premie was born more than 2 months early and is perfect and beautiful and everytime I look at her and think sickos like you believe it okay to KILL perfect babies like her, it makes my stomach turn. ADOPTION, ADOPTION, ADOPTION! I am not saying force people to have children they don’t want. And yes there are those on your side pushing for killing babies AFTER they are born if they are not wanted (Obama is one of them). He voted for legistation in Chicago to allow babies who survive an abortion and are BORN alive to be put down! You people are EVIL!!!!!

I am sure the Democrat slave owners made great arguments as to why slaves should not be freed. I believe one of those arguments was they weren’t really people (same argument as the baby killers). They were property (same argument as the baby killers-part of my body). Life in the medical community is defined as having a heart beat – which occurs at 6 weeks of life. Justify your evil somewhere else.

I support Planned Parenthood’s policy of minding their own business and not interrogating women who are trying to exercise their rights. Since they do good work, there is no reason they shouldn’t accept all money that is offered to them. Dirty money is only a problem when it is given to people who are for sale.

Fish have heartbeats and mosquitoes are alive, but they aren’t people and neither are fetuses. The human mind is what defines human life as different from other forms of life. What does a fetus have to think about?

Obama did not vote for legislation to allow babies who survive an abortion to be killed. He merely voted against a bill requiring doctors to try to keep them alive. Bills like that are a scam that use the threat of financial ruin to make doctors afraid to perform abortions. The babies involved are usually so severely injured that they are going to die no matter what is done for them, but abortion providers are forced to waste resources that are not always available to people who want to keep their babies just to force them to linger fro a few hours.

      Chet you are pure EVIL
I personally know a young woman who survived an abortion. A nurse ignored the order to let her die and saved her life. She was adopted and now speaks publicly on the evils of your death culture. A baby is a person, with a heart beat. They survive as early as 20 months (regularly) outside the womb and yet you think they should be killed because they might inconvience you. Maybe you inconvience me, should I come put you down! By the way brain activity is shown to develop in the 2nd month of pregnancy. Spend some time in a NICU and take a long look at the Non-persons you want to kill! You make me sick

I don’t want to kill the babies in the NICU. They are people and have a right to live, and they will have a better chance of living if the NICU is not full of babies who had to be brought there after botched abortions whether they have any chance of long-term survival or not, because you have forbidden doctors to exercise their own judgment in order to scare them out of providing a legal medical service that patients have a right to seek. Fish have heartbeats and brain activity, but they are not people, and neither are fetuses.

A baby isn’t a baby until it is born. Being made of human cells doesn’t make you a person, having a human mind does. Babies have at least started the process of developing a mind, a fetus hasn’t. It can’t perceive the world through its senses, so it has nothing to think about. There is nothing wrong with killing it.

And when my husband would sing to my belly she would start kicking like crazy. And when she came out she knew his voice and was comforted by his song. Your lack of knowlege of what occurs in the womb is how you justify death.

I kind of hope I get to be in the room to listen when you try to explain all of this to God on judgement day. I personally believe that if you don’t want a child you should, I don’t know, maybe not have sex. And if it’s the result of a rape, that’s what adoption is for. Why should that baby have to pay for your studpidity, or someone else’s brutality. They didn’t do anything wrong.

So you had a premature baby, and one that kicked like crazy and had such a developed ear that he could recognize a voice that he had previously heard only through your abdomen, and you personally know an adult who started life as an abortion survivor? Your boundless capacity to conjure up alleged personal experiences to bolster your fatuous arguments is starting to stink of horse manure.

Well lady, when I see God I’ll tell him that I never had to abort a fetus because I’m not an idiot, and I’ll point out to him that he made all the idiots in the world, not me, so it isn’t my fault if the idiots need doctors to help them not make more idiots. And anyone who thinks that a woman who has been raped should be forced to endure the further violation of having to carry the spawn of her abuser and deliver it into the world is a sick, sick person.

I don’t lie. My premie daughter is named Lily. She is an angel and she turns 4 next month. You do not understand what occurs in the womb. Babies are COMPLETELY formed by the 5th month and have developed all their senses except sight. They can hear you and they can feel and respond to touch. In the NICU they limited our touch time in the first few weeks because the nerves on an early premie are “raw”. They feel pain much like a burn victim and even a gentle touch can hurt to them. There are “people” who don’t sense the world around them, due to disabilities. Do you support killing them too? It is evil to take a life because you deam it less valuable. Lucky for you, your mother apparently did not share your ignorant view.

The sensory data received by a fetus in the womb is insufficient for the development of a human mind. How smart would you be if you lived in the womb for fifty years without being born? Not much beyond the level of an unhatched chicken, I would guess.

There are no people who don’t sense the world around them due to disabilities. We know that the deaf and the blind can lead good lives and be part of the world. Touch is our most important, and because we take it for granted, underrated sense. Any one of the big three senses is enough to give you a chance to be part of the world and live a free and meaningful life, but if there was a blind and deaf person who also had no sense of touch, yeah, I think it would be okay to kill them. I can’t imagine how such a person would ever be able to develop their mind, or be allowed to live in a state of freedom

The public opinion shift wasn’t as much from the controversy, but rather the light shed on the support they have given and continue to give to Planned Parenthood. Very few people knew of the connection with the Koman organization and Planned Parenthood. My mother is a breast cancer survivor and after I learned of the tie years ago have supported other breast cancer organizations.
