A northern California school district is under fire for a photo display of black and Hispanic boys placed in a teacher meeting room with the words, “Keeping our black and brown boys in mind.”
A parent complained to KPIX-TV after spotting the photos in a meeting room at Julia Baldwin Elementary in San Jose. The pictures have reportedly been there since the start of the year and are a way to make sure at-risk students don’t fall behind by making their names and faces clearly identifiable to staff members, the station reported.
The Oak Grove School District is trying to close the achievement gap between black and Hispanic boys compared to white and Asian boys, and asked its 19 campuses to identify such students in order to boost their performances.
But the parent, who has remained anonymous, called the display’s photos of the children insulting “…in such a racist and demeaning manner under the guise of promoting education development.”
According to KPIX, teachers at the school held three meetings to try to get the photos and slogan removed but were rebuffed. Parents were reportedly not informed that their children’s photos were being used.
Baldwin principal Joyce Milner, who is black, did not respond to KPIX’s interview requests.
Oak Grove Superintendent Tony Garcia issued only a statement to the station, which read in part: “We are proud of the fact that we openly discuss race and its impact on student success.”

Posted on May 31, 2012 at 7:45pmMaybe it was up there because as you know they all look the same. Now don’t get mad people as this was only a joke. And that is the problem today. No one can take a joke. And no one can accept being told their wrong. You see, I’m one of those dreaded Conservatives that judges a person on their character, not how they look. I can respect a Gay persons opinions as long as he can respect mine. No matter how against what a person believes I am I can respect their view. But to Liberals, this is a one way street. They know not how to respect your view as with most of them they are right and you are wrong. Case closed. They claim those that disagree with them as uncompromising while they are the most uncompromising of all. If you don’t agree to what they want, you are not willing to compromise, but to compromise you must be willing to listen to what the other side has to say.
Report Post »I don’t know the student makeup of this school, but it most likely is a majority, of the minorites.. But it seems to me that this parent wasn’t upset because of their childs race, but by the fact the school was calling them a loser. And the parent realized that most believe the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Posted on May 31, 2012 at 9:00pmActually, I don’t really think this is about being offended or not. Maybe for the person who called in the complaint, yes, but I think if you read the story, this turns into a total race categorizing and it is in the face of all those kids every day. It is by all accounts, a racial grooming.
Report Post »So what happens to the poor white girl who‘s mom is on meth and there’s a new daddy every day? They don‘t need to worry about her cuz she’s white? I’m sure her race will keep her from falling through the cracks. What about the mexican boy who has a mother at home and a dad who’s working and home every night, making sure he’s making the right decisions in life? He needs a boost from the good ol teach so his skin color doesn’t hold him back in life?
For the lady in the story to state “We are proud of the fact that we openly discuss race and its impact on student success.” is a bunch of bull. I as a ‘white’ female can tell you race is never discussed openly or truthfully, for if it was, those pics would not be on the wall telling them every dang day that THOSE kids are less than and need more than other RACES.
I may be white, but my 2 younger kids look full blood mexican and I would be p!ssed-not offended-if I saw my son or daughters pics on a wall inferring they were inferior to ‘whites’ and ‘asians’.

Posted on June 1, 2012 at 4:02amMabey if the parent knew that the principle was black then it wouldn’t have been a problem.
They can fix this by firing all white teachers and only hire black teachers. After all white kids will benefiet from having a black teacher. This way they will see that blacks are not the scary monsters that white parents make them out to be. Also black students will learn better with having a teacher that looks like them and understands them. ——–This is a real article I read on blackamericaweb.com. I wish I had a link to share. You would have enjoyed it.

Posted on May 31, 2012 at 5:07pmWhy not keep ALL students in mind equally? Maybe it is too politically incorrect to get better students to help tutor those that are lagging? Maybe the Unions stand in the way? Maybe the Dept of Education failed decades ago? Maybe the school is spending too much time and money teaching the wrong things instead of the 3 Rs! Maybe the teachers are too jaded in their ways and too boring with their “standardized mandates” they have to abide by.

Posted on May 31, 2012 at 4:41pmA “cohort” is a statistically significant group of people. “All boys” or “all Asian girls” or “Kids who live in single family home” are all examples of cohorts. The cohort that is comprised of college students who major in education (“future teachers”) ranks the lowest on SAT scores for any groups in college. In other words, teachers draw from the ranks of the lowest performing students. That tells you everything you need to know about a story that singles out black and brown boys: it’s just stupid.

Posted on May 31, 2012 at 8:36pmUnfortunately, having sat through numerous meetings about this very subject since the Common Core Curriculum will be instituted in our state in September, when you run the numbers, the lowest scoring group is not Caucasian girls, it’s the Hispanic/Latino and African American/black (whatever the term du jour you prefer is) boys in reading. Economics does play into it somewhat, but even when the tests are given with clickers, which is when the students select answers on a hand held computer similar to an iPod. The individual student grades are tied to a number so when the data mining is done, there can’t be any kind of gerry-mandering. Time and time again, boys are in the lower quartiles.
There have been concerns about whether or not these students are recent arrivals, but even the students that are born here in our city are right in the same statistical group. Sometimes, there are issues around kids who are bi-lingual, but those kids seems to bridge the gap once they get firmly started.
Personally, I think it’s a maturity thing. Our son couldn’t tie his shoes for love nor money (literally) for many years. We just bought him loafer type shoes. Then one day when he was about 10, he sat down & tied his soccer cleats. For whatever reason, he couldn’t do it & then one day, it clicked. The same child was reading fluently at three. Go figure. For kids, there’s an “Ah!” moment when it starts to come together. For a lot of boys, it seems to come later than so
