‘Racist!’: Columbia Univ. Students Heckle Wounded Iraq War Hero

In defending the merits of university ROTC programs, a wounded war veteran received a cold reception last week from Columbia University students who heckled and mocked the Ivy League freshman. The NY Post reports:

Columbia University students heckled a war hero during a town-hall meeting on whether ROTC should be allowed back on campus.

“Racist!” some students yelled at Anthony Maschek, a Columbia freshman and former Army staff sergeant awarded the Purple Heart after being shot 11 times in a firefight in northern Iraq in February 2008. Others hissed and booed the veteran.

Maschek, 28, had bravely stepped up to the mike Tuesday at the meeting to issue an impassioned challenge to fellow students on their perceptions of the military.

“It doesn’t matter how you feel about the war. It doesn’t matter how you feel about fighting,” said Maschek. “There are bad men out there plotting to kill you.”

Several students laughed and jeered the Idaho native, a 10th Mountain Division infantryman who spent two years at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington recovering from grievous wounds.

Maschek, who is studying economics, miraculously survived the insurgent attack in Kirkuk. In the hail of gunfire, he broke both legs and suffered wounds to his abdomen, arm and chest.

    You educated spoiled idiots. I am proud to be from a family of military. My nephew served in Iraq. The wars are not the militarys decision to go to war. It is our leaders. Thank you to this young man. My theroy is all 18 year olds should go into the military. It teaches Respect and Honor and Humility to stand in front of Dishonorable crowd of Cowards who all they can carry is a sign and cruel words.

    I am completely disgusted with those ignorant, spoiled fools.
    Each one of them should be made to sit down, individually, & watch war footage of the enemies of freedom torturing & beheading people. Mob mentality must not be allowed. They should do volunteer work for injured soldiers at our VA Hospitals. I thought I would never see the day that our soldiers would be treated this way again after Vietnam. This really p_sses me off. I’m so very sorry that this hero was subjected to such stupid ridicule.
    I wish to God that every Professor would have a little “talk” with their students in every class to teach them respect. Oh wait… that will never happen. They are probably the ones that taught these cowards the ignorance they portray.

They’d rather protest the right for some teacher to collectively bargain then actually make something of themselves so that they never depend on some group to bargain for them. It’s pathetic!

    Another dispicable act by those who have no idea of the battle about to be waged on our own front door. It’s because of the courage of these soldiers who put their life on the line day in and day out that we enjoy the freedoms that we have today. Unfortunately, our dear leader is doing all he can to destroy our country. It should be mandatory to serve two years in the military and by so doing learn what proper motivation really is. Columbia has long been a breeding ground for anti American thought. It’s just a shame that these institutions have been corrupted by radicals who have never tasted the dust of life or felt the sting of combat.     I have written to my Senator, Speaker Boehner, and Majority Leader Eric Cantor requesting that we immediately disallow any federal taxpayer dollars to flow to any college/university that does not allow ROTC. DADT is over…no more phony excuses. If you are anti American Govt, fine, but you can plan to pay for it youself. They need to do this now! Start holding these people accountable. Elitist students at Columbia are part of the same leftist thinking that allows them to be disconnected from reality because some one else is paying the tab. Please demand this now.

I know people that have graduated from Columbia University and they can’t think for themselves. What comes out of their mouth is the same liberal crap with no variation. That school should be ashamed of themselves. Columbia University doesn’t teach student how to think, but what to think. When these graduates come across someone with a different view point they can’t handle it and they don’t know how to articulate an opposing view point because their skills and reasoning are weak at best.       Beware of framing! The report said that some students heckled him. If two students heckled him, then i can be said that “some” students participated in the heckling. I’m not saying that it was two people, I would assume there were more hecklers than that, but I doubt that most of the students there were giving him a hard time.

      Support home schooling. Support “ideologically balanced” institutions of higher education (where you can find it). Vote for state government that will change higher education administration to choose better professors.

      This war is a messed up war. The Iraq portion of the war had nothing to do with national security, and to date I am still not sure why we are in these other nations. HOWEVER, before you all jump on me you should know I’m an Air Force vet who was serving during 9-11, and so was my brother. My father and is an Army vet and his father a Coast Guard vet, with my mothers father a WWII Army vet. Currently I have 3 Brother In Laws serving, two Army one Marine. So I think I have more of a right to speak my peace than most here. ONE MORE THING. Though I think these war unconstitutional, I have nothing but respect for the military and I pray for their safe return one day soon. If you have a problem with this war, don’t rail against the military, rail against your president and your congress. They are after all the ones who decide where they go and where they fight.

      The protester at an anti-health care reform rally who yelled and threw money at a pro-reform advocate with Parkinson’s disease has apologized for his “shameful” actions and blamed them on impulse.

      “I snapped. I absolutely snapped and I can’t explain it any other way,” Chris Reichert told the Columbus Dispatch. “He’s got every right to do what he did and some may say I did too, but what I did was shameful.”

      It should be mandatory that Everyone..EVERYONE…should spend 2 years in the armed services of our country. You live her, you enjoy the feedom…you learn to defend it.

      It’s time for our young peopel to grow up , quit living off of mom and dad and find out what reality is all about.

That is what we serve for, and like your’s, that is what my family before me served for. I strongly agree with your thoughts about railing against those who send young men into the fight not those who fight the fight.       Maybe this is why the Sympathizer in Chief does not want to open up his College records from his days in College he began at Columbia and then went to Harvard. Columbia is a hot bed of Middle East sympathizers since their Professorial Ranks include a Palestinian friend of the President, Kahlid Rashidi. Makes you wonder where the Divine Miss O got his understanding of Middle East issues.

      You see Activists can Activate something they just have trouble figuring out how to make it go/run. This president is good at campaign speeches and getting Banks to lend to dead beats, but he has no experience on how to get people together to work on the hard issues. Even his political record in Illinois was Present or I don’t know how to vote or take a side.

      What Obama shows is that the wrong Black man is president it should have been Jefferson Davis or at least Col. Alan West of Florida.
