‘Racist, Confederate Goons’: Heated Debate Erupts on ESPN Over Hank Williams Jr. Departure

A heated debate erupted on ESPN’s show “Outside the Lines” on Thursday during a long segment devoted to whether or not ESPN should have parted ways with Hank Williams Jr. after he made a Hitler analogy earlier in the week.

Things started off fairly benign, but by the end voices were being raised and guests were arguing about the, well, Civil War. This might take some explaining. Hang with me.

Part one featured Ken Paulson of the First Amendment Center, who also used to be editor and senior vice president/news for USA Today; Alexandra Petri of the Washington Post; and Dave Zirin, sports editor of the liberal outlet The Nation. That last name is the most important.

Those three didn’t create any fireworks per se, but they set the stage for the rest of the debate. For example, Paulson noted that while “the spirit of free speech was violated” by ESPN firing Williams* the First Amendment itself was not.

The moderator then asked the piercing question: What do Williams’s views on anything “have to do with his ability to announce it’s time for Monday Night Football?”

Zirin, for the most part, agreed with the others, saying that, “Really, one has nothing to do with the other.” Still, he couldn’t give Williams a free pass: “The NFL is always trying to be all things to all people, and to have as the spokesperson of their flagship show someone who would be viscerally offensive…then it becomes a different question all together.”

But then he made the curious point that Williams’s music advances the idea that we should all be “racist, confederate goons,” which is a reference to Williams’s song, “If the South Woulda Won.”

Here’s that part:

And now we get to the fireworks.

See, ESPN cycled out the first two guests and brought in Paul Finebaum, a radio host down in Alabama where Williams makes his home. He didn‘t take too kindly to Zirin’s remarks about “racist, Confederate goons.”

“What people down here don’t like are people like Dave Zirin making idiotic statements about country music songs that Hank Williams has written,” he said, later adding, “I think the statement he made today is the single stupidist I’ve ever heard in the history of this program.”

That led Zirin to talk about country music “stereotypes” and “oppressing people” and Finebaum to levy the charge that “you don‘t know what you’re talking about” to Zirin, and even a challenge for Zirin to come down to Alabama.

Now the rockets are red-glaring.

Bomani Jones — the second replacement guest — quickly piped up and said that Williams has “attached himself” to politics that many people find “offensive” and “extreme,” and that since he’s a representative of the network, and because he called the president an “enemy,” then there’s a “problem.”

Time out. Didn’t the president use the word enemies to describe conservatives last year? I think so:

I digress.

It only took about 30 more seconds for the bombs to start bursting on air. Finebaum took some of Zirin’s comments about racism as a personal attack on the South, and went on the defensive. That led to a charge of unprofessionalism and everyone comparing who was more Jewish or more southern.

Finebaum eventually asked a poignant question: “What’s wrong with stating your political opinion? Just because you two guys don’t agree with it, and then you start hiding behind all these elitist attitudes, which people from the South are sick of.”

“Paul! I’m as southern as you are!” Bomani shouted back in response.

Here it is:

Alright, then. But although we’re done with the fireworks, we’re not done with the discussion.

ESPN then brought on Robert Thomspon, who teaches TV and pop culture at Syracuse University. Can you guess what he had to say? Well, he took a page out of Glenn Beck’s book and, while he said he agreed with ESPN’s decision, he made it clear that what Williams made was an analogy and even referenced the SAT (like Glenn).

“Let’s take out Hitler for a second,” he explained. “What if he would have said, ‘Obama playing golf with Boehener is like the Big Bad Wolf playing golf with the Three Little Pigs.‘ That’s not actually saying that Obama is the Big Bad Wold and Boehner is the Three Little Pigs. It’s saying that those are similar in that they are both mortal enemies:”

Whew. What a segment. And there is a lot that you could say about it. And I’m sure there will be a lot said about it. Many will certainly wonder where all the outrage was when George W. Bush was compared to Hitler incessantly in the early 2000s. Others will note (as I did) that referring to your opponents as your “enemies” is something Obama made famous last year. And still others will wonder how other stars such as Madonna can make a Hitler reference and still be rumored for a Super Bowl half time appearance.

*I recognize the ESPN claims to have fired Williams and Williams says he quit, but for the sake of this discussion — and since the guests are using the premise that he was fired — we’ll go with “fired.”

so just because someone listens to country music we are racist and confederate goons, so would that obama a low life ,******* hating, big city thug, because he listens to rap, had a conservative sports analyst said something like that, he would have been called a racist and fired, because someone would have been upset that they we’re compared to the confederate and they would have said that it brought backs images of racism and would have been insensitive, but a liberal, well no harm no foul, this is bulls–t, i am offended, { o yeah, i don’t count, because i am a white male and a conservative.} these idiots really must know that the more they spew this crap, and make these sh-t sandwiches, the more people { even their own liberal buddies } see just who obama associates with and who he supports,so keep making the sh-t sandwiches and make a lot of them, people are paying more attention than ever, there is no place in sports for politics, but the NFL and espn on several occasions have been right in the middle, what Hank Williams said was not racist and was his opinion and he was fired, well, espn, what about this commie, country music, confederate hating race baiting idiot, i will a wait his firing, but i want hold my breath, because this is expected from liberals and espn,

Not all but many blacks don’t want to be equal anymore like MLK. They think everyone else owes them something because people were slaves a long time ago. They are still taught this is school today. MANY MANY people have been slaves. Not just the black, but the Asians, Irish, Christians, Jews, etc. etc. etc. It’s getting really old. That was so long ago the only slaves still here are the Mexicans and they need to go back home.

Everyone that has come to this country early in its’ history has had to pay a price. Blacks had forced slavery, the Chinese, Irish, and even the English paid a heavy price. Some paid a much higher debit, but they all paid a debit. My relatives were from England and were indentured servants They died on the debit holder’s farm so their children could be free.

      Pujols….
Good point about every ethnic group having been slaves.
Blacks today definitely have a huge chip on their shoulders.

Here’s the thing that always amuses me…..had Blacks been slaves in, say, China, or, say, the USSR, they would have been sent off to slave labor or shot, and never heard from again. However, the US rectified slavery first, then discrimmination, incrementally, thereafter.

So, Blacks end up villifying the very system which freed them. Of course, then ‘The Great Society’ came along.

Thats where the ‘chip’ comes in I mentioned earlier. The Black agitators with real hatred in their soul will never change. Blacks live freely, have benefited from Affirmative Action, get help from other taxpaying Americans in the form of reduced or free housing/school meals/pre-K ‘day care’, etc, and, do to poor parenting, still manage to fail miserably in school, which, in turn starts the cycle over again with the next generation.

We have seen each succeeding generation become more hostile towards Whites, and this country. Many Blacks are unable to think for themselves of the advantages they have in the USA, regardless of the fact that many Blacks have become very successful. Of course, being ignorant as to what a free society entails helps to keep them in a constant state of rage towards the US.

We are plagued by the constnant double-standard. Liberals can say whatever they want, no matter hbow stupid it is, without facing any consequences. Conservatives speak their minds (even with a Hitler analogy that was actually funny to visualize), and suddenly they’re racist and need to be ostracized. To me, it doesn’t matter to me what ESPN does. I stopped watching their smut a long time ago. They ruined Monday Night Football because their commentators suck and their political bias has been evident in the past. But we need more people speaking up to not let the liberal media get away with it.

First of all, I’ve got a problem with a guy who sells Confederate flags with his name embazoned on them. There’s gonna be a presumption of racism until proven otherwise.

Secondly, this is absolute nonsense that Williams was simply making some academic analogy. He was inded equating the President of the United States with the worst mass murderer in history.

GRETCHEN CARLSON: “You used the name of one of the most hated people in all of the world (Hitler) to describe, I think, the President.”

HANK WILLIAMS JR.: “Well, that is true…that is true. But I’m telling it like it is.”

Williams doesn’t belong around decent people in my opinion…

Well, yeah — they ARE morons. You gotta wonder though, just why they are soooo sensitive about comparisons of Obama to Hitler? A little too close to home, maybe? A little to close to the truth they can’t face, which is that the emperor has no clothes and they are slavishly following a bankrupt political philosophy which has brought nothing but MISERY and POVERTY to the world? Any FOOL can read a history book and conclude that gee, maybe fascism and Marxism just weren’t very good ideas, considering the appalling toll in human death and misery they brought with them. Not these fools–they march right into it with all flags flying! How STUPID is that?

Gee, Hitler hated the Jews. Obama is hellbent on destroying Israel, and has made little secret of it. (Note to the uninformed: Israelis are JEWS. Obama hates Israel. You figure it out. Isn’t that a lot like Hitler?) Obama LOVES radical Islam. Hitler hopped into bed with radical Islam, because they shared a common hatred of Jews and a desire to wipe them out. Sound familiar? Hank didn’t say it, but I WILL — OBAMA IS A LOT LIKE HITLER, and anybody who can’t see the similarities is AN IDIOT.

Listening to country music doesn’t make you a Confederate goon, but if you sell Confederate flags on your website (SHOW YOUR REBEL PRIDE!) with your name emblazoned on them, as Hank Williams Jr. does, then I think there’s good reason for at least suspicion.

Also in response to a poster above who thinks that Mr. Williams was not equating President Obama with the worst mass murderer in history, he was. He admitted that in the interview:

GRETCHEN CARLSON: “You used the name of one of the most hated people in all of the world (Hitler) to describe, I think, the President.”

This is yet another reason to avoid watching NFL football. It’s millionaire players hired by millionaire owners to play in stadiums financed by public bonds paid for by the property taxes of little old widows. It used to be a game. It is now nothing but greed in a context preventing free speech of conservatives. The NFL is now for Yankee northerners only and is no longer open to southerners of strong opinion. Congratulations to Barack Obama. The first half-black president in the U.S. has generated more racism than anyone before him. There is Nothing a rational American could say to one as willfully blind as Dave Zirin. Why did Fox and Friends ask Hank Williams about who he favors in the next election? They asked about Hanks role as voice of Monday Night Football-and he answered honestly -and has not been slapped for that. (Until Zirin attempted to defend ESPN) Hank was asked about the CDs of his daddys Music that he is hawking.
He answered honestly . And has not been challenged for that ( Though the Radio host Finebaum did allude to it) WHY did Fox ask about politics? And WHY has ESPN not slapped Fox and Friends for
instigating the issue? Everyone was jumping on Hank Williams and the South as being Racist, and
stupid. But the Constitution of the Confederate States– was modeled after the US Constitution. The South had closer ties to George Washington and to our Declaration of Independence Than did the Yankee leading up to and just after the War of Northern Aggression. Can you recall the animus by many in the North to recognition of the South — how Congress questionably passed the 13th, 14th ,and perhaps 15th Amendments (most noteworthy the

Look at his attourny general Holder…the guy is a pure white hating racist lier. We have credible reports now that obama was seen with leaders of the black panthers…..obama loves to give his god like speaches even with the reverb tweaked up to make him sound more god like, just like the guy back in the 30′s with the little mustache….obama has made many comments about how he wished he could just start doing everything through executive order. ***
You have some very good points, I’d like to add a question for the Jewish people who are on the Blaze. These )_______ (fill in the blank) kids on Wall Street keep ranting against the Jews controlling the money, YET THEY WANT FORGIVENESS OF ALL DEBTS. IN MY BIBLE STUDIES OF THE YEAR OF JUBILEE,, ISN’T THIS A JEWISH CUSTOM FROM OUR OLD TESTAMENT AND YOUR TORAH? Or have my Bible study leaders been wrong? I understood that every 7th year all property returned to the family who sold it, and if anyone sold themselves into slavery to pay a debt, on the 7th year it was forgiven? Right?
      IF SO SOMEONE TELL THEM!!!!

      @Mil Mom

The Old Testament states that all debts be for forgiven and indentured slaves be freed every 7th 7th Year of Jubilee. So, every 49 years Jew were supposed to forgive all debts. But that was under the Old Covenant and not the New Covenant. I think even the Jews have a new set of rules from God. They are no longer offering up sacrifices on an altar, one would think there are some other changes as well, right? I’m not saying anything about the Torah for sure, just thinking about the logical conclusion.

If you support Israeli then ask any of
your Jewish friends if President Obama is
the same as Hitler. It is insensitive to the memory
of those who died to make the analogy.
If you have any relatives who fought in WW2

It’s true slaveholders were exempted by law from Confederate combat. At the height of the antebellum Southern human chattel industry, 75 percent of the white residents owned no slave. Of the 25 percent who were slaveholders, the vast majority, 88 percent, owned between fewer than 20 people. Because food had to be farmed to victual the rebel troops, slavers were sent home to run their plantations. That left the guys with no dog in the fight fighting and dying in droves to own slaves they couldn’t afford. The causes of the War Between the States were a little more complicated than slaves alone. The South went to war for empire. If you asked the average soldier what the fighting was all about, they would — once they cut through the propaganda — explain how they had a God-given right to expand west and south and conquer new lands for new plantations and new slave owners. Cotton farming depleted the soil so Southern society had to keep clearing new lands if the cotton culture was to continue. The simple way to explain the motivation of the Confederate cause was a dream of new empire. And since that empire was predicated on slavery, ultimately the war was about enslaving fellow human beings in new territories and the fight between those who would have it and those who would not.

Miyegombo Bayartsogt, my compliments on your 100% adherence to the opinion of Karl Marx. Not one element different. Read his “Die Presse” articles on the war.

You convieniently overlook that 5 slave states remained in the Union – what were they fighting for? Also overlooked is that not one slavery provision within the Confederacy – was different than the United States Constitution and laws prior to secession. And, that these laws were fully enforced, unchanged, within the Union until the 13th Amendment was ratified. The Emancipation Proclamation did not free any slave held within the Union, or Union Controlled territories, at the time of its signing. It even exempted 2 Lousiana parishes that were still under the control of the “Rebellion” due to the fact several slave owning plantations were owned by wealthy New Yorkers who financially supported Lincoln. Please, research these facts for yourself. Also, examine your Marxist endoctrination regarding the war.

The truth is the Confederate Constitution differs from the concurrent US Constitution and laws in these areas: No General Welfare clause (entitlement programs would be unconstitutional), No Bounties (subsidies),No Internal Improvements (pork barrel projects), No dispensation of the Treasury to foster any branch of industry ( Sorry GM, Chrysler, AIG, or Lehman Bros.), Congress was unable to amend the Constitution – only a Convention of the States.

There are your “causes”, same ones currently problemati

Glenn has had no such show on the war between the states with any dissenting dialogue apart from his own view. He’s had numerous shows that include pieces regarding Lincoln and Frederick Douglass – where he and his guests take the exact same position of Zirin. He directly insulted anyone not holding his view on the September 22nd show.

Ironic, because O’Reilly smacked Glenn down regarding Washington – using Glenn‘s own logic regarding ’slavery’ this past Oct 3rd. Bill O’Reilly, “I’d never place Washington over Lincoln, because Washington was a slaveholder”. Touche’ Mr. Beck – a stab right through your “Merit” badge.

Glenn can easily make excuse for Washington – and in the same breath overlook the numerous paragraphs in the Confederate Constitution that would have halted our national spending spree and “redistribution of wealth” taxation situation. Glenn can rail on Obama and his socialist associations, but will never reveal that Lincoln had even more Socialists in his administration than Obama. We get to hear all about Obama’s correspondences with Trumka and Andy Stern – but you’ll never see him examine the exchanges Lincoln had with Karl Marx and actual Communist revolutionaries from the 1848 European wars.

So no, Glenn has never dealt with the “War Between the States” with any objectivity whatsoever.

ESPN doesn’t like Hitler analogies, but they don‘t mind letting dog murdering psycho’s (Vick) come back to the NFL because despite his obvious flaws, they claim he’s paid his debt to society and he can put butts in seats. They’ve made a mistake this time. They made a mistake when they wouldn’t let Rush buy into the St. Louis Rams too. It seems to me that if one were to look just under the surface – ESPN and the NFL may have clearly drawn a line in the sand and have sworn fealty to profit above character. There was no fair and balanced discussion. Obviously ESPN has a political view that they want to show. I bet they were just waiting for something to fire him over.
