Racist Cupcakes? Berkeley Leftists Blow Gasket over Affirmative Action Bake Sale

The highly anticipated “Increase Diversity Bake Sale” organized by U.C. Berkeley College Republicans finally took place on Tuesday — and with explosive results.
The bake sale, which based its price structure on race — higher pricing for white and Asian students, lower pricing for black, Hispanic and female students – was intended to expose the hypocrisy of proponents of CA Senate Bills 185 and 387, that seek to re-introduce Affirmative Action by allowing the university system to base student admissions on ethnicity.
The pricing structure was as follows:
$2.00 for White/Caucasian
$1.50 for Asian/Asian American
$1.00 for Latino/Hispanic
$.0.75 for Black/African American
$0.25 for Native American
$.025 off for all Women
Last week The Blaze explained the College Republicans’ intent:
“Just like the CA Senate Bills 185 and 387 the phone bank supports, we will be considering race, gender, ethnicity, national/geographic origin and other relevant factors to ensure the equitable distribution of baked goods to our diverse student body,” the College Republicans wrote in a Facebook announcement publicizing the event, set for Tuesday. “Hope to see you all there! If you don’t come, you’re a racist!”
Well, come they did — and in droves. Angry ones.
The obviously satirical bake sale was meant to make people take note of how racist the cupcake prices were, to which the College Republicans would reply, “that’s our point, it’s the same as SB 185 and 387!”
Berkeley leftists, perhaps too conveniently, failed to make the same association however, and instead descended on the bake sale en masse — and in a blind rage.
According to blogger Zombie, who attended the event, the arguments, hostility and cries of “racism” from Affirmative Action advocates flew:
To everyone’s amazement, the College Republicans did not back down, despite massive condemnation from the ASUC (the student government) and worldwide accusations of racism being hurled at them. In fact, they held their own in the arguments pretty well, because practically every single opponent fell face first into the simple logical trap the Republicans had set: If you think the pricing scheme is “racist,” because it discriminates according to ethnicity, then you must also think that Affirmative Action is racist, since it does exactly the same thing!
Even the Campus Communists came out in a show of solidarity to protest the bake sale.

They blacks have to bring a white person with them, the blacks pay a quarter, and the white pays the other 1.75 of their price. I have several freinds who were of mixed ethinicity that were told that they didn’t have enough or appear to mix enough to get minority assistance. They had to get their own loans and be saddled with debt because they were too white.

It shows how affirmative action and civil rights laws have put certain groups of people above others instead of ensuring equality for all. Now that I said equality, let me define it for you moronic libs and progressives. Equality in the human context means that you have an equal oportunity to work towards your goals and where you want to be in life. It in NO WAY ensures that you will reach those goals or where you want to be in life, but hard work generally pays off in both education and in the working world. Many people succeed and many fail, but all have equal opportunity to do just that. Now the affirmative action laws and civil rights laws as racist as they are have given certain groups of people more opportunities than any others in this country, the funny thing is those same people that have been given those EXTRA opprotunities are the ones crying foul and blaming their situation on all but the person in the mirror, and the person in the mirror is squarley where the blame is.

Some of you gush about how your “black friends” all work very hard and don’t need hand-outs–well, that’s the goal of AA: to get more African-Americans to that point. Get them into mainstream middle-class America!
So for those of you who style yourselves defenders of Western Civilization–all you are trying to defend is its exclusivity. If you were really a fan of WC, you would celebrate the chance to expose ethnic/racial minorities to the very best it has to offer: an advanced and open education system that makes the West the envy of the world.

Therapy is the answer, but can a person be cured if he refuses to admit he is sick?

I do agree that in a lot of ways an income based program would be helpful. However, the focus on income does not achieve the kind of productive integration that can remedy the “fracturing” of American society that conservatives often point to. Many of you are fond of talking about the “melting pot”–well, this is it! Education is perhaps the most effective mode for cultural assimilation we have, regardless of how you feel about the different ethnic studies programs that colleges now offer. If you want a strong and unified America, you have to put your money where your mouth is.

The recognition of race as a social and legal category that has and continues to have a profound effect on American society is not racism. This is what AA does.
Racism is the belief that races are essential biological categories and that some races are inherently superior or inferior to others. If you believe this, then AA makes absolutely no sense. If you believe in an essential biological racial hierarchy, then education wouldn’t mean anything.
The entire concept of AA is built on the premise that the races are inherently EQUAL, and that therefore the current socioeconomic disparities experienced by many minorities are the result of other factors that can be corrected through education. I know that many of you are NOT racists, and you simply believe that we all compete on an equal playing field–the only difference is that AA supporters do not think that we have achieved this level playing field yet.
Of course this bake sale appears to be persuasive–when you replace generations of economic and social hardship with a cupcake then it tends to look a bit ridiculous. This is a tactic of evasion–of mocking a fundamental problem within the United States rather than having the courage to face it. It’s cowardly, and its pathetic.

When you promote someone based on their race, rather than their qualifications that is racist. It doesn’t matter if they are trying to help that person or not.
Take a look at Gratz v. Bollinger. It was a supreme court justice case where The supreme court ruled that Michigan States AA point system was deemed unconstitutional. I grew up in MI and know about this case… essentially MSU assigned a point system to their admissions processes. There was 150 points total with 100 to gain admissions. Minorities were automatically given 20 points, while perfect SAT scores were given 12. Now if you take a white person and a black person who without AA and without SAT scores calculated had a score of 85, neither person gets in right. Now factor in the white student has a perfect SAT score, while the black person barely passed. However, the black person gets points for the low SAT score which may amount say 5 points. This puts the black person at 90 and the white person at 97. The white person is clearly more qualified; but wait, the black person has AA, so we automatically add 20 pts meaning he has 110 points. So the school is clearly choosing a black person over a more qualified white person, all because the person is black. That is racist.
AA has good intentions, but in practice it is racist and flawed.

It’s time to get rid of “marriage-status-ism” in all it’s forms, but until that happens, I guess we‘ll have to have some kind of AA for those people who aren’t part of traditional marriage arrangements. I don’t care who marries whom, and at the same time, I don’t think marriage-status-ism ought to be tolerated. Get rid of marriage-status-ism and you’ll get rid of a lot of “gay” marriage along with it. Marital status has nothing to do with anything–it’s a private spiritual matter, not a tax avoidance scheme or a pretext for more free milk and cookies.

I appreciate your willingness to concede that the intentions of AA are good, but I still disagree with you that it constitutes racism in the proper use of the term. As I said, race has been and continues to be a influential concept in American society. Wishing it wasn‘t so doesn’t make it true!
I do agree that AA programs need to think hard about how they are weighting the race factor, and academic performance should obviously be the most important component. Nevertheless, I still believe the benefits to both the minority students and the study bodies of these schools as a whole outweigh the possibility that some less qualified applicants will be accepted.

Racism is the belief in racial differences, although I would clarify that by saying the belief in biological differences (as opposed to, say, cultural differences). Yet, as I explained, AA supporters do not believe that races are different–they merely acknowledge that races have been TREATED different throughout the history of the United States, and that we are still dealing with the consequences of this. It is the legacy of this unequal treatment (rather than the belief in biological inequality) that AA policies attempt to correct.
Now really, if any of you still want to say that AA supporters are racist, you have to actually prove what you are saying. You see–that’s how an argument works. I know that all of you are on the Blaze just so you don’t have to be exposed to any pesky differences of opinion, but I insist on bursting that little ideological bubble.
Do you think the Founding Fathers actually wanted us to all go to our separate ideological corners and not deal with each other? Look at the makeup of Washington’s cabinet.

I was once a Democrat, and the Branch President of our local branch of the National Association of Letter Carriers. I voted for Mondale. Then, I started seeing something wrong, and dared to ask questions and challenge the “beliefs” of the Union. I became an outcast. I realized I held Conservative values, and started to see just how elitist and Communist the Unions were. I have voted Conservative since the late 1980s. I retired from the Postal Service in 2007. You can imagine how bad my “tenure” was during those last fifteen years. I have preached freedom, and tried to show my fellow workers the danger of Socialism, Communism and Unionism, but it fell on deaf ears. I have no contact now with my ex-coworkers; they don’t want to know the “truth”; they believe the Union line.
It is REFRESHING to see there are young students who are willing to stand up and speak the truth and demonstrate for real justice, not the crap the Liberal Commies call “Justice”.
Most of the college campuses are filled with what Lenin called “Useful Idiots”. God bless these patriots for what they are doing, and God bless the Tea Party for trying to bring Freedom back from the brink of extinction in America!

I’ve seen all races of individuals succeed and fail, why should one group have more preference over another in todays world. What has happened? We’ve let too many third-world people come here, and way too quickly. This has played directly into the Communist agenda. Actually, it was their agenda. At this point in time, they (Latinos/Mexicans, etc) are useful for creating class envy and all the other divisive tactics needed for the anarchy which, the Communists hope, will lead to the demise of our Constitutional Republic.
In my opinion, the “fall” of the Soviet Union was a ruse. Oh, the loss of the various republics was going to happen anyway, but the internal attacks on the US have always been in the works. Did I hear that Putin was again ‘running’ for Russia’s presidency?
