Rand Paul at FreePAC: ‘Government Doesn’t Do Anything Very Well’

Tea Party-favorite Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) opened his speech at FreedomWorks’ “FreePAC” event with a joke:
“You may have heard about — there was a little girl and she said she wanted $100 and she said she’d do good things with it. And so she wrote a letter. She said, ‘Dear God, I’d like 100 dollars, I’ll do good things with it. So, she sent it off and the postmaster got it and he didn’t know what to do with it so he sent it to the president. The president said to his secretary, he said, ‘oh, that’s so cute, send her five bucks, that will be a lot of money to her.’”
“So she wrote a thank you, she said, ‘Dear God, thanks for the five bucks but next time don’t send it through Washington, they stole 95 percent of it.” After hearing the punch line, the crowd went wild.
Paul spent much of his time on stage blasting the Supreme Court and President Obama’s health care overhaul.
“Government doesn’t do anything very well,” he said, prompting laughs and cheers. “It’s not that government is stupid, although that’s a debatable question.”
Paul went on: “Now I don’t know if anybody here was unhappy when the Supreme Court ruled on Obamacare,” he said, drawing boos. “I was a little bit unhappy.”
He also clarified his position on Obamacare after he said the Left slammed him for saying that just because the Supreme Court deemed the health care law constitutional, doesn’t mean it is.
“What I meant was: I still think it’s unconstitutional,” Paul quipped. “We need a better Supreme Court is what we need.”
“George Will got it exactly right, George Will said that the case against Obamacare is the last exit on the highway to unlimited government,” the senator said.
Later in his speech, Paul said President Obama’s “You didn’t build that” remarks offended him personally.
“I took this as a personal insult,” he said to applause. “We’ve all got roads, we’ve all got public schools. You know, I don‘t want to sound like I’m bragging but I feel like I earned some of the success for going to medical school.”
He then referenced this tweet in his speech:
“The family that runs the American donut shop in Bowling Green, the Vietnamese first generation immigrant family that gets up at 4 in the morning and makes donuts and works their butt off… You think they don’t deserve it?” Paul asked.
There are a lot of people who may refute that.

Libertarians basically think government should be hands off almost everything…except what is clearly stated in our US Constitution (which is VERY limited government). Libertarians believe Americans know better for their own lives, and should take responsibility for it. That government messes things up by getting in our way. Libertarians are almost ALWAYS pro-life because they believe the unborn baby has a right to life. Rand Paul is a Christian (so his is father Ron Paul). Libertarians would be equal what our country’s founding fathers beliefs were! You need to do more of your own research.

Crumbling infrastructure that was built with taxpayers’ money but not maintained because the money was used for paying government employees that produce nothing but rules and regulations.
Government established the Department of Education in 1970′s and students abilities have gone downhill ever since. To the point where we are now “average” and behind South Korea, Funland, China, and Canada with spending per student the highest in the world. As a percentage of GDP we are 37th in a list of 132 and as the GDP goes down the ranking goes up.
General Motors – the only sales of their miracle green car are to the government – fascism anyone?
etc, etc, etc
So what modern government builds is always – always – always a failure. Just like their failure to uphold the constitution.
So go ahead, Mr. Obama – look at what government (federal, state, and local) builds.
I‘m sure glad I didn’t build those things. I’m NOT glad you built those things with my money.
Get out of the way! Just get out of the way and _we_ can have a country to be proud of whether or not you or your wife is proud of it. Speaking of which, are you proud that poverty levels have reach their highest since the 1960′s? That’s your goal? Sure seems like it.

Government workers don’t get paid based upon performance (kind of like being a weatherman) and so they think their job is just to get campaign contributions. If you look at history the gov’t has never done anything as well as private business can do it. It won’t be long before the Post Office is history because of this.
I live in Pennsylvania and we have “Wine and Spirits” stores run by the government. Private industry can do this cheaper and also provide more tax revenues to the state but it’s all about control just like any other government function is.

Posted on July 27, 2012 at 7:09amHere’s how it works. The government passes thousands of rules and regulations. Those rules and regulations, some good and some bad cost the businesses money to comply with. It also costs money to manage them so government adds departments and employees that cost money so taxes go up. This hurts business so the government creates other rules and regulations to try and help businesses, those also cost money to run so the government adds departments and people so it needs more taxes that take the money out of the economy to feed the beast they are creating. You can look at every single government department and position on any level, local, state and federal and yo will find the most convoluted conglomerate of inefficiency you could ever imagine. Nothing but wasted money. AND all those employees get paid with benefits for the rest of their lives after 20 years. Totally unsustainable and that’s why you are starting to see bankruptcies through out the country until finally the country is bankrupt, just like Greece. It puts us in the position of borrowing 40 cents on every dollar spent. As liberal or left as you may be that math would not work in your house hold nor does that same math work for the government. $16 Trillion in debt with $60 Trillion we owe to pay for all those worker’s pensions and benefits for the rest of their lives. The government did that. Other roads, highways, bridges and other things that allow intrastate, interstate and foreign commerce, yeah that was the government. The street in front of your house, the stoplight that prevents accidents at the intersections you drive through, the stop signs, the drainage systems that keep your neighborhood from flooding, the phone lines, the gas lines, the water lines the sewage line, the police, the firefighters, the park rangers, the people who rescue you when you’re in trouble, the people who keep your food safe, your medicines safe, etc. I’m getting tired of listing thing the government does that you take for granted. Go to another country, where even drinking the water is not safe, and you’ll gain a better appreciate of what the government does for you.
No, the government isn’t good at everything. Agreed. But when you walk out your front door tomorrow, and see the street you drive on, the electricity and water and gas that comes to your house, the safety standards built into your car, the fact that you can see the sky (unlike in China) and breath fresh air, you might think twice about saying the government doesn’t do anything well.

Posted on July 27, 2012 at 1:32amJZS is missing the point completely. The argument isn’t whether the government does ANYTHING. We know they do things. They pass laws burdoning every private activity they can identify and name. They raise the cost of living. They destroy whole industries with the stroke of a pen and make ghost towns out of thriving communities. They decimate the spirit and hope of entrepreneurs whose newest and greatest ideas are shot down in flames by a dullard in a suit inside the beltway. They make EVERYTHING harder and NOTHING easier. They obstruct, constrict, deny, strip, devalue, confiscate, and prohibit. They take everything great and leech as much money from it as they possibly can. Does the government make clearner air? NEVER. They simply prevent private enterprise from operating until PRIVATE ENTERPRISE invents a workaround to the unaccountable bureacrat’s latest obstacle. Even the government’s greatest successes are without fail multiple times costlier than any and I do mean ANY private company accomplishment of the the very same thing. Why? Because the government fails to regulate the one thing that our costitution demands they regulaate, and that is THEY FAIL TO REGULATE THEMSELVES.

Posted on July 27, 2012 at 2:45ammarine249, you’re right in that President Obama has been able to pass very little legislation now that, thanks to Republicans, it takes a 60% majority to pass any legistlations, which probably has the Founders rolling over in their graves. Republicans won’t even vote for bills they championed in the past because it would look like President Obama “did something. “You’re right, President Obama can’t pass any legistlation now, and so he hasn’t done anything.
But Obama has done nothing? Have you forgotten about all the terrorists who have been killed? Is your memory a little selective on that? If you have a child born with a medical condition do realize that now your insurance can’t refuse to pay for his treatment when they could before. If you develop a health problem do realize that now your insurer can’t drop your coverage just because you got sick? Do you know that your insurer will now cover your child up to age 26? Did your realize he‘s giving employer’s a credit of $5,600 dollars for businesses who hire vets and $9,600 for hiring disable vets?
Despite the Republican efforts to subvert the Constitution, and block every piece of legistlation the President has tried to pass, he’s accomplished a lot.
Can you tell me what the Republicans want for our country? You can’t, because they have no solutions. Unless you count taking money from you and giving it to their rich donors as a solution.

Posted on July 26, 2012 at 11:36pmGov’t does military well. It CAN do infrastructure well when it chooses to. But other than those, Paul is right — gov’t is not the entity you want providing goods and services at reasonable cost.

Posted on July 26, 2012 at 11:33pmYou think the only reason we arent hunter gatherers is because of government?
I think Rand Paul’s point was government needs to be out of healthcare. Lets not repeal and “replace”. Lets just repeal Obama/Romneycare.

I can see it now-
“Truth: Rand Paul is a neocon marxist and a muslim.
Truth: Freedomworks hates freedom and supports Obama, George Bush, Hitler and Satan.
False: I am rational etc.

If you compare Rand Paul to Ron Paul, he absolutely stinks.
If you compare Rand Paul to all the other idiot US Senators, he’s a genius and a saint.

Posted on July 27, 2012 at 12:19amWell put MOMMA. Not to mention all Constitutionalist will have to keep a close eye on Rand since his recent endorsement of Romney, before ya know it hell be voting to raise the debt ceiling, expand the TSA’s budget and QE3. Lets hope a Romney nomination doesnt corrupt whats left of the true Constitutionalist in Congress.

I dont think we have to worry about Rand. He did what was best for the Liberty Movement. He like many of us realize there are so many dummies in this country they will blame the the Pauls for the loss.
Trust me, I was angry about it, but after a few days and listening to Dr. Paul and a few other talk about I cooled off.

Posted on July 27, 2012 at 6:55amReal Conservative. There’s a strong belief that weed is the best remedy for PTSD among some of your brothers. The VA is even coming around a bit on this a little bit. I’d suggest it only offers a short-term relief, but still better than what the pharmaceutical companies are pushing. Rember 18 vets a day.
