Rand Paul Defends Tea Party on Sen. Floor: I Dare You to Come to a Rally

“It’s amazing to me to be lectured to and hear about how awful the Tea Party is.”

So began Sen. Rand Paul’s (R-KY) defense of the Tea Party on the Senate floor yesterday. And he took off from there, inviting detractors to visit an actual rally and chastising Democrats for trying to blame the Tea Party for the delay in approving a budget bill.

“They want to blame it on the Tea Party because in their secret caucus meetings they’ve done a poll that says the Tea Party could be the villain. Call them extreme, call them all Tea Partiers, say the Tea Party has taken over the Republican Party,” he said. “Well you know what the Tea Party believes in? Good government. We Believe in balancing the budget. We believe in reducing spending.”

Earlier, he talked about the false sense of compromise. “They say that compromise is the ideal,” Paul said. “They tell the Tea Party you need to compromise. But you know what the comprise is? They want to raise your taxes. … That‘s what they’re talking about.”

He then asked a simple question about the budget wrangling: “Will the deficit be more this year than last year?”* In short, he said, yes, and the trend will continue.*

Watch the eight minute speech below:

(H/T: Right Scoop)

*An earlier version of this story summed up Paul’s answer as “no.” That has been corrected.

What Tea Party? Today was April 15th and I don’t see a single story about an actual Tea Party rally. The party served the purposes it was created for – preventing the creation of public health care insurance and swinging the House of Representatives to the Republicans. The old-school Republicans behind its creation don’t want the rabble agitating for any of the broader causes they think they were brought together for, so they stopped feeding their pet monster and it’s already started to die of natural causes.

This isn’t hard – as a Tea Party person (not member) this is how I see myself, I am a Constitutionalist. That’s it. I believe in a limited federal government as the founders intended. I know what the founders intended because I read the Federalist AND the Anti-Federalist Papers. I have read the coorespondences between varied founders. I believe that they had it right. The country started down a bad path with Andrew Jackson, who completely ignored the Constitution based on his whims and temper tantrums. I believe Teddy Roosevelt started us down a dangerous path and I believe Woodrow Wilson took everything Teddy started and ran with it. In fact I believe the Teddy Roosevelt – Woodrow Wilson situation is very much like our Goerge W. Bush – Barack Obama situation.

Call us extreme, call me whatever names you’d like – I think it’s funny and I wear it as a badge of honor at this point. It also shows how desperate they are, it shows we are winning and they have nothing to fall back on but name calling and lies. It’s OK, Jesus said evil hates the light and loves the darkness.

I know where I stand and they know where they stand too.

The Federalist / Anti-Federalist Papers provide a nice INSIGHT into the process, and the Articles of Confederation was a step out of those DEBATES… but in the end of the day, the CONSTITUTION is the only relevant document as it is the ONLY document that holds the RULE of LAW.

It is a LIVING document at that… whether you “strict constructionists” want to believe that or not.

The fact that the Judicial was deliberately devised as an equal Branch of our government flies in the face of those who feel that decisions that are made through “interpretation” can be defined somehow as “activist” rulings.

Nothing could be further from the truth and it is a tribute to the prescience and the foresight of our “Founders” that they had managed to grasp that fact at a time when the structures of western civilization were so different as they are now.

For this reason alone, our Constitutional government is the oldest in the world and will fortunately continue to exist long after this iteration of our society has evolved into something more enlightened than it is now.

Our “Founding Fathers”, in their infinite wisdom, recognized that the “majority” of any country, however “enlightened”, can be as tyrannical as any Monarchy… as any despot or dictator could ever be, & that even a “Democracy” has important limitations.

Those confinements are beautifully described in the Preamble to our “Declaration of Independence”.

      “Unalienable Rights”!!

A concept unheard of in all of history before, & never before integrated as a “Rule of Law”.

“Human Rights” that can never be torn from anyone while in our Country, not even by the “Majority”.

Do any of these people truly realize what we possess here??

Sorry, but the fact that some here seem content to either remain willfully oblivious to this gift that we all enjoy, or are too obstinate in their hatred of others to realize that this is inextricably who we are as a People.. as a Nation.. as a UNION…

      @DOC
you are completly wrong. you are misguided and your statement is flawed. here are some facts about the history of our REPUBLIC that you got wrong.

First the articles of the confederation were written before the constitution. the articles were flawed in several ways(like your history). that is the reason the constitution and bill of rights were written. and why the of 3 branches of the federal government were created. to balance each other. hence why the federal judiciary has the same amount of power as the executive or administrative branches.

Second, we do not “interpret” the constitution or the bill of rights. the federal papers were written by the people who wrote these documents to outline their direct meaning. because they knew fools like you would try to “interpret” and change the meaning the way liberals do today.

i will not pray for you, but i will laugh with my friends tonight about how funny you are.

      at “DocStrange…”
      an addendum to SIMPERFIDELIS:

Third: Your attempt to classify the Constitution as a “Living Document” in naught but the Progressive’s attempt to subvert it. The Constitution IS a strict set of Rules Meant to KEEP GOVERNMENT OFF OUR BACKS…. For instance, the Supreme Court’s REFUSAL to deal with ALL aspects of the vetting of our current “Resident” in the White House can be interpeted as an“ACTIVIST” judgement, should you choose to be honest….

The only “Living” aspect to your interpetation applies to the People’s RIGHT to change the Constitution via the Amendment process, case in point; Prohibition and it’s eventual repeal.

WE are in this boat because we got lazy and “trusted” polititians….. WE don’t “need” Term Limits BECAUSE We The People ALREADY have that via….. (wait for it)…… THE VOTE!!! We have been “dumbed down” to the point wherein We eat the mind pablum that “They” feed us.

That is in the process of changing…..

thanks for speaking up for the tea party, but lets get some congressional hearings started on the criminal and terrorits activity going on with people who have access to the whitehouse and are personal friends with the president. stephen lerner, george soros, piven, all the ignorant racist with code pink. yeah, the debt is important, but i kinda think terrorist attacks and americans planning violence here at home and in isreal is a bigger issue. we may not have total control, but we have congressional control and they should be having hearings. the constitution is being stepped on and spit on left and right and no one is doing anything about it, even the elected tea party members. what happend to everyone? did they all forget the oath they took to defend the constitution? we are in a war that was not even mentioned to congress and no one cares. silence from those who were so vocal during elections. where is our congress? where is their values and principles? they all have failed us. i don’t root for someone cuz they give a nice speech that agrees with me. i root for someone cuz they have principles and values and take their oath seriously. right now i root for none of the people we elected. we should be out on the streets screaming at these idiots like we did last year, but no we have been silenced too. yeah we state how we feel here and maybe on freedom connector or a 9/12 site, but we are not being visible and vocal like before. we need to get our act together again, or we will be part of the problem. all of us claim to be awake, maybe we are, but we are still stretching and getting the eye buggers out of our eyes. we are awake, yes, but lets get out of bed and get to work people!

@LEAHASVEDO – I really agree with a lot of what you are saying. And I too feel that the massive marches that occurred a couple years ago, should be happening again. I want to see hundreds of thousands of freedom lovers again marching on the capitol reminding those who benefited from our involvement in the last election, that we are watching and we expect action. We expect them to not lift off the gas for even one second in their efforts to stop the unconstitutional sabotage of our beloved nation and it’s founding ideals. We want all americans to see that we are NOT affiliated with any one political party, but stand on PRINCIPLES. Yet, we see the 2010 election that is essentially a landslide victory for Republicans and it seems we have packed up our flags and signs and yawned and stretched, and if we havent gone back to sleep, it appears we have at the very least decided to take a nap. The Revolutionary War wasnt over when the first shots were fired at Lexington and Concord. We need to get up and gear up, folks!

O‘Reilly would be the first to kiss Obama’s ring if Obama ever became Dictator Obama for life. Glenn would die first. O’Reilly is slightly right of center. THAT IS NOT CONSERVATIVE!!!!!

You want a REAL, HONEST-TO-GOODNESS CONSERVATIVE? Glenn Beck, Rand Paul, Ron, Paul, and Chris Christie. Everyone else is a WANNABE.

I think we all need to look at the person we are tagging progressive or conservative. One or the other RARELY exists anymore – they are always left of or right of the center. RAND PAUL IS TRULY A FAR RIGHT CONSERVATIVE, but Congress thinks that is a dirty word.

The TEA Party was NOT “born the second Obama won the election.” That’s another Leftist LIE. It was months into his administration, after he had made it clear that his agenda was to transform our Republic into a Socialist country that people with some intelligence heard his message and asked WTF?! And, with NO HELP from anyone, no, not even Glenn Beck, we emailed and organized and spread the word and
GATHERED IN SUPPORT OF ONE ANOTHER.

I don’t know where you got the idea that we want him dead. We want to either stop his disastrous direction or get him out of office. Actually the TEA Party was born out of a number of different groups that have been around for years. Let’s just take the group here in Michigan A.C.E. Americans For Constitutional Enforcement. The TEA Party has united groups such as these and provided a much louder voice across the country. Showtime is correct in saying that The TEA Party wasn’t around until Obama started implementing his radical socialist policies. Better brace yourself for 2012 because Obama’s approval rating is around 46% Approve to 48% Disapprove according to RealClearPolitics which is being real generous to Obama. You can’t get re-elected when more people would rather vote for Spongebob than the incumbent.

A lot of talk about who is conservative on here. I would not put GB, Oreilly or Hannity into the Conservative camp. You can‘t continue to support war after war in the Middle East while telling the people of America there’s no money for healthcare, schools, and roads their small towns. It’s wicked! Certainly not Conservative. Besides it’s becoming increasingly obvious to me that about the only issue which GB, Oreilly and Hannity feel very strongly about is “NO TAX HIKES FOR THE RICH!” Not based on any sort of principle or the tax code itself but pure selfishness.
Although I prefer a fair tax code prerably flat for everyone based on principle, I’m not willing to go to the floor for Millionaires and Billionaires to maintain their lower rate. I actually find it disgusting that it is becoming the only issue which GB, Orielly and Hannity ever discuss any longer!

Let their rates rise for 10 years then enact a flat fair tax for all.. Never any talk about the actual legitamacy of the IRS or the manner which taxes are collected but it’s all about protecting the rich.

These are not Conservatives at all. Rand Paul is a true Conservative. Maybe Jim DeMint and Coburn. Real Conservatives are few and far between.. And my god dont’ make me sick by saying the new guy from FL Rubio is a Conservative.. lol He’s such a joke. Better than what we had but no Conservative.

Always judge a Senator or Congressman by how much the Media loves them.. Inverse relationship. Therefore FEAR the Pawlenty guy.. Obviously a Neo Con since the Media loves him so much.

here i thought it was a Taxed Enough Already movement but I learn that it’s about fighting socialism.

it’s a movement about a bunch of tighty whiteys perceptions. it’s about kicking a bunch of do nothing lazy minorities off of welfare. that‘s what it’s really about or you guys would be going after the top 1%
hey they deserve the spoils of their work but more and more cash has been sucked up to the top over the past 30 years. that’s your raise, that’s your paid vacation. that’s everybodies ability to have upward mobility. mobility that you worked for. yet you guys want to protect the ability of corporations to funnel as much as they possibly can up the ladder while those below who DO WORK have to do without that raise, without that vacation. I have two jobs and go to college. I haven‘t gotten a raise ever at my job and I dont’ get vacation. If i take a sick day, which i’ve done exactly 1 and a half days since 2008, my boss makes me feel like a worthless piece of crap about it. the cost of social programs, which i don’t use unless you count student loans, are nothing compared to the ever increasing amount of profit margin that goes to the tippy top instead of everyone in the company having the ability to make a little more. you assume i want something for nothing but I work. if i don‘t work 2 jobs i can’t afford blue cross blue shield for a family of four. i pay 25% of what i make each year for that crap and the ONE TIME i’ve needed to use it, they only want to cover 10 freaking percent. you think welfare layabouts are your problem and yes there is waste and exploitation. but you guys SUPPORT corporations taking more and more of the money while everyone else WHO WORKS has to make do with the same median income indefinately. how much is enough? at what point do you say “hey, that‘s everyone’s raise going into a few people’s pockets” there are no jobs here. people come in every day looking for work. i’m not going to quit. but i can‘t get a raise or a vacation even though i’ve taken on 4 times the responsibility i had when i started because my two bosses say how there’s no money. meanwhile they each buy a new car EACH YEAR and take, not one, but TWO month long vacations per year. of course they’re republican. if I or any of the other employees openly expected more then they would balk but they don’t see any harm in expecting more from us for the same amount of cost to them. their time is money. my time is theirs. it doesn’t make any sense. I don’t expect to make equal or even near what they make but clearly there are profits. yet i’m a leech if i expect any kind of raise after all this time. it’s bs.

The National Debt, Deficit and Budget Cuts
      For Dummies like me!

Look, most of us can’t even conceive of billions, let alone trillions of dollars. So, to put this into perspective in terms most Americans can get their head around, I am going to do two things. First I’ll eliminate 9 zeros from all the numbers. This means $1.00 = 1 BILLION, $1,000.00 = 1 TRILLION. Second most people budget by the month, not the fiscal year, so I will use the fiscal year numbers (converted) in a monthly budget.
O.K. are you with me so far? If not read the first paragraph again.

The National debt will be for this example a credit card with a $5,000 limit
When Bill Clinton left office the budget was balanced but the National debt was 5.6 trillion dollars. So for this example Clinton left Bush our $5,000 limit credit card $600 over it’s limit.
Bush came into office and started running a Deficit, in other words he was making less than he was spending (actually Congress is who does the spending, but this explanation is not about blaming anyone), more than his income ( like a lot of us do). In fact in 2006 for our example he spent $162 more than his income and the credit card had a balance of $8,500 Those late charges and finance charges add up!
Now, the Budget. Fast forward to 2011 (estimated) 2010
      Spending ( total U.S. budget)…………………………………..$3,700.00 $3,517.00
      Income (total revenues)…………………………………………..$2,000.00 $2,105.00
Deficit (amount added to the credit card balance)…………..$1,700.00 $1,571.00
Balance on the credit card (Total National debt)…………..$14,290.00 $ 13,561.00

Budget cuts agreed to April 9 2011 ( how much we
Are willing to give up to fix the problem…………………….$ 38.00
By the way this is over a period of 6 months
Charges on the credit card for just the 8 days of negotiating
      these draconian cuts…………………………………………….$ 40.00

Now let me ask you this. If you had a credit card that was $9,000.00 over the credit limit, of $5,000 , and you had an income of $2,000 a month and were spending $3,700 a month (putting the balance on the card). When they called you to ask for a payment, you told them “ well I’m willing to spend $38.00 less this month, and I’ll pay you a payment, someday, when I get a raise. What do you think they would say to you?

People, It’s time to get serious about this. China an Japan are our credit card companies. One of them doesn’t really like us, the other really NEEDS all the money they can get right now!

Rand Paul may be our New Founding Father. He sees the greatness in America. He will try to return us to greatness. Call and say thanks. Send money to prepare him for the next election. Unite because the other side is so united and spends other people’s money.
Tax day falls on a work day, the Tea Party goers, will be at work to pay for all the free programs.

@WHIITETEAPARTY — ROTFLMAO! You are insane, respectfully, seek help. “If you repeat a lie often enough it becomes the truth.” -Lenin (further expounded upon by Goebbels)

Obama’s approval rating is 41% according to Gallup, quite a jump to 63% don’t you think, useful idiot? Yes, 41% would be even with his lowest lows so far, and this just after his glorious Budget Speech.

You can keep my people on reservations, you can pretend that your helping us, you can drive a nail into the heart of idiots, but most will not be swayed. “You can fool some of the people, some of the time, but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time.” -Lincoln. For idolizing Lincoln your Comrade Obama does a poor job of emulation.

This Rand Paul may not be the sweetest speaker in Congress but surely he is among the most honest, and it is this that you disdain the most.

WTP, you are correct when you say “Obama approval 64%.” But you forgot to mention that that poll was taken in a group that voted for Obama in the last election.
