Editor’s note: to watch Rand Paul tell his story, read our follow-up story here.
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) was detained at the Nashville airport, according to his Facebook page. Reports say he was in a “standoff” over an incident involving a full body scanner and a subsequent request for a patdown. Paul reportedly refused the latter, and now TSA denies he was officially detained, but rather stopped.
The Facebook message appeared around 10 am ET:
ABC News has more:
@moirabagley, the Twitter account associated with Paul staffer Moira Bagley tweeted around 10 a.m., ET, “Just got a call from @senrandpaul. He’s currently being detained by TSA in Nashville.”
A spokesman for TSA said the agency was looking into the matter but could not immediately comment.
Paul apparently set off an airport security full-body scanner, “on a glitch,” a spokesman in Paul’s office told ABC News.
The Paul staffer said TSA agents would not let Paul walk back through the body scanner they were demanding, according to the staffer, a full body pat-down.
The senator’s chief of staff, Doug Stafford, told the Daily Caller that Paul refused to get the full-body patdown after TSA would not let him walk through the scanner again.
“I spoke with him five minutes ago and he was being detained indefinitely,” Bagley told Politico Monday morning. “The image scan went off, he refused patdown.”
Ron Paul, the senator’s father who is running for president, acknowledged the story on his Twitter account:
Ron Paul later released a statement lamenting the “police state:”
“The police state in this country is growing out of control,” the elder Paul said in a statement released by his presidential campaign.
“One of the ultimate embodiments of this is the TSA that gropes and grabs our children, our seniors, and our loved ones and neighbors with disabilities,” he continued. “The TSA does all of this while doing nothing to keep us safe. “That is why my ‘Plan to Restore America,’ in additional to cutting $1 trillion dollars in federal spending in one year, eliminates the TSA.”
Rand Paul has long been an outspoken critic of the TSA and its procedures. Earlier this year, ABC notes, Paul brought up the issue in a hearing:
TSA has responded and is denying that Paul was “detained,” but rather eventually left the screening area willingly:
“When an irregularity is found during the TSA screening process, it must be resolved prior to allowing a passenger to proceed to the secure area of the airport,” TSA spokesman Greg Soule said. “Passengers who refuse to complete the screening process cannot be granted access to the secure area in order to ensure the safety of others traveling.”
When asked about the incident this afternoon, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney defended the agency: ”I think it is absolutely essential that we take necessary actions to ensure that air travel is safe.”
According to Nashville’s WTVF-TV, the scanner detected something in Paul’s lower pant leg. He apparently tried to show he had nothing under the fabric and requested a rescan. TSA, however, wanted to do a full-body patdown, and Paul’s refusal led to the “standoff.”
Paul eventually booked another flight and made it through security without incident.
“There is no problem,” Paul told the Associated Press. “It was just a problem with their machine. But this is getting more frequent, and because everybody has to have a pat down it’s a problem.”
By the way, Rand Paul will be joining the Glenn Beck radio program on Tuesday at 11 am ET.

The TSA official saw this as an anomaly because usually politicians going to DC have neither of these and therefore they warranted further investigation.

Would you vote for a candidate who backed the so called Patriot Act that stomps all over the Bill of Rights?

Lately i have been reading your posts and agreeing with them, and at the same time wondering what the heck was it that I didn’t like about your posts before…….You just reminded me.
You are on a mission to smear Beck…..way before Beck was smearing Paul…Whatever your reasons may be…..I feel like maybe it had something to do with his spiritual beliefs or something, because back before this race started, that is what most Beck haters had against him. How constitutional are you, if you can not be tolerant of what others do with their freedom i\as long as they are not hurting you?
I too have been frustrated with Beck when it comes to Paul. You can believe what you would like about Beck, but Beck is who woke people up (on this scale), and the reason there are so many people backing Paul. He had the microphone to reach tons of people, and explain Paul’s ideas (knowingly or not) in a way that made sense, and didn‘t sound like you had to be a pot head to embrace Paul’s ideas. I had seen the Paul revolution people before, and they are NOT the ones that made me take a serious look at Paul.
I even watched a doc. about Ron Paul Revolution the other night and I agreed with the video, but I still don’t think they explain things well enough. People who don’t understand it would not get it. Liberty and freedom SHOULD be appealing to everyone, and all types of people.
Point out where Beck is wrong but don’t paint him into something he is not…

The bible says that all nations will be against Israel. So for this to happen, Ron Paul would have to win because hs isn’t standing with them. Or Obama will stay president which I believe is more likely to happen.
Mark my words everyone. cut and save this post when I say Obama WILl stay president (not that I want him to) and Iran will start something, President will piss the people off more and he will say he is not stepping down for what ever reason and declare martial law. People will dispappear your neighbors family. Don’t worry about it we all know where they will be. FEMA camps. So I say to all of you. Get guns, hurry and get your ccws’ so they come for you. You can be ready to the best we can. There is more of us then all of the US army combined.
Only way to fix our problem is if Ran Paul had ran. Now that he didn’t, the only way to fix our problem now is exercise our second amendment right. Which clearly states we need a call to arms and stand up against our government and throw them out by gun point and start our government all over again as the second amendment says to do.

He also wants to stop government intrusion into our privacy and restore individual liberty. For this, he has been labelled “crazy” and “dangerous.” To the powers that be, he is dangerous because he advocates freedom.
Ask yourself if your opinion of the candidates comes from what you know, or what you heard on television. If it is from what you heard on television, you have undoubtedly allowed yourself to be manipulated. The influence the media has over public opinion has brought us to this point, and this is why we cannot allow the internet to be limited. Freedom alone will save this country.

Posted on January 23, 2012 at 3:19pmThat is my beef with GB in a nutshell and why I no longer care for him that much. I still listen to his radio show. I listened today. He was very funny; however, his attack on Newt who I do not care for either for many of the reasons that Beck points out is very inconsistent. One could make the very same arguments about Romney, Santorum or Newt but not Dr. Paul. So Beck obviously has a horse in the race and he’s not being intellectually honest.
It has absolutely nothing to do with the Mormonism aspect of it; however, I do not think that one can have a serious conversation with the likes of Beck and Huckabee without addressing religious differences. Ever notice the acrimony between the two? For all or any of his shortcomings Huckabee is a serious and devout Christian and I think that bothers Beck who imo again is a phony.
He needs to get back to promoting Conservatism and the US Constitution!

Dose Paul Know The Law. He Should Not Have Submitted To The TSA Search And Should Have Boarded His Flight.
The US Constitution states emphatically that a Representative or Senator cannot be detained or arrested when traveling to or from the Capital while the House and Senate are in session. Senator Paul was returning from his home state traveling to the Capital.
The Senator could have been forced to miss a quorum call or important vote by the TSA. Paul should have flashed his Senate ID and pushed pass the TSA. Several years ago Congressmen Kennedy of RI was stopped for DWI and could not be arrested because he was on his way to a House Vote at 3 am in the morning.
A group of US Senators should test out the TSA on the US Constitution.

It’s important to remember that all of this insanity is possible because of the so called Patriot Act, which is nothing but a complete pile of dung that stomps on the Bill of Rights.
Seems to me that all of the candidates with ONE exception has supported the Patriot Act, and that fact makes them traitors.
In fact, the Republican party as a whole has also brought upon up the NDAA, that allows Obama to arrest folks without formal charges, witnesses, and a release date.
Seems many in the Republican party have been completely hoodwinked by the NWO shills who’s rhetoric does not match their actual positions.
