Rand Paul Pushes Immediate Half-Trillion in Spending Cuts

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer seemed baffled Thursday afternoon as Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., proposed to cut government spending by $500 billion — a notion that necessarily means cutting some public sector jobs.

How could you cut peoples’ jobs? Blitzer wondered aloud.

Additionally, Paul suggested cutting U.S. foreign aid, including aid to Israel.  “It’s an interesting dance, avoiding seeming critical of Israel (which he refused to do), yet still doing the one thing that people who get upset at those who are critical of Israel want the least out of a U.S. politician: cutting off U.S. support,” Reason’s Brian Doherty observed.

Unlike many proposals to cut spending floating around on Capitol Hill these days, Paul’s stands out because of his plan to cut spending during FY 2011.  To be blunt, the Kentucky tea party favorite wants to cut funding immediately.

TPM also notes that Paul‘s plan is like a thorn in many Democrats’ sides as he proposes completely de-funding liberal favorites such as the Affordable Housing Program, the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Also on Paul’s chopping bloc for significant cuts: the Consumer Product Safety Commission (de-funded); the Department of Energy (de-funded); the Department of Health and Human Services (cut $26.5 billion); the Department of Defense (cut $47 billion) ; and the Department of Education (de-funded).

I am certainly glad that Rand has done this! We have redundancy because most states have their own identical departments! However, it really does not matter because we are in the early stages of seeing a states revolt through nullification! It is going to snowball to! I fully expect the states to revolt on taxes as well. This is going to happen because Washington is going to collapse. The Federal Reserve and the IRS are going to go with it! Their time is up and once the financial crisis hits full scale there is going to be an uprising like you have never seen! Prepare yourself because it will not be pretty!

      No.

No, they won’t “sit by”. They haven’t been sitting by. That’s been the entire goal for decades; overwhelm & collapse the system economically and socially to cause unrest and violence they can exploit to encourage “top-down” totalitarian response.

They all understand full well what increasing spending or even attempting to keep spending at current levels will do. They are counting on it. They are using the exact same tactic which Iran is employing regarding their nuclear program.

They will say anything and use any tactic possible to buy sufficient time for them to accomplish their goals. The ends justify the means. It is the despotic insanity that would prefer the entire world including themselves dead if they cannot be the supreme rulers.

Be extremely cautious when the Progressives realize their defeat is upon them. They will attempt to totally destroy the country, and possibly the entire world if they can, as a last suicidal kamikaze act.

I believe the “Liberal gene” recently discussed is actually linked to the ability to accept one can be wrong. Liberals/Progressives always view themselves as the smartest people in the room. They view people as easily-herded livestock, with themselves as the “ruling elites”.

They are mentally incapable of accepting that their ideas and beliefs might be wrong, or that someone else not in their belief circle might be smarter than they are. It is just such an inflexible world-view that causes people to suicide when massive changes in the world happen, like many German civilians did after their defeat in WW2.

The United States Department of Education wasn’t even in operation until 1980, and I think most would agree, that since then things have only gone downhill. The individual states ran their own education before then, and even today with the fed “running the show” the states fund the overwhelming majority of their education budgets themselves.

this serious discussion has to be repeated and often, keeping it on air will help to that end, no matter how crazy or radical some cuts may sound to some its the way for serious debate to start, the more these matters are discussed the more palatable they will become, make no mistake the “first cut is the deepest” there after not so bad and once the process starts we will be on our way to serious yet prudent spending cuts that will make a difference in getting us back on track to manageable debt levels

I have been a huge fan of his Dad for better than two decades. For a long time Ron Paul has been the only voice of reason out of the 535 voices in Congress. Finally, he has company! How fitting that it is his son.

Let’s not waste time with a “tea party”/Rand Paul for President pep rally right now. Ron Paul has been talking this talk and walking this walk since before lots of you were born, much less since there has been a tea party. Now with Rand in the House, and a handful of like minded patriots maybe they can make something happen. We need to get behind them. Let‘s help them push this through before March so we don’t have to face raising the debt ceiling. Rand is right on; waiting any longer to do what has to be done is just a slow death to our Republic. Let‘s do it now and we’ll come out on the other side that much more quickly.

We all need to contact our representatives today and demand, yes demand, that they get behind these proposals and get them passed. Don’t assume that the establishment majority of the do nothing Republican Party is going to embrace these proposals. Most of them are Progressive Lite in their philosophy. Many a sacred cow is going to be gored in this fight! Those cowards won’t get on board unless we push them hard. Any one of them could have done this at any time in the past. This current “crisis” has been a long time coming, they all just ignored it and told us not to worry about it.

Let’s not squander this opportunity. THIS is what the November election was all about. Bravo Representative Paul! God Speed to you sir.

I know that we are in for some tough times. I don’t expect that he will get much support as a candidate if he were to run following these cuts. If the waste were corrected first and then re-examine each agency and organazation. Find out where the money goes. I can see the necessity of some of these reductions but I also see that millions of people will be effected and more turmoil will follow due to the cuts.I am not sure if it would cause more expense in the long run. It needs to be handled delicately and not in one hard sweep. If more become unemployed how will that help the economy? Wouldn’t it put more pressure and strain on our nation If there are fewer checks handed out for employment ? What about SS , medicare, state and local, and federal taxes ? Who will have to make up the difference? What about the cost of unemployment itself? I worry that a 47 million dollar military cut would cause harm and risk the safety of our military men and woman and the security of our country. Alot of the organazations such as welfare need completely overhauled. We fund many organizations that could and should be eliminated first. To much of our money goes overseas and never ends up where it is supposed to go. All of this may cause serious rioting here just like in Europe if not handled properly. While we know that cuts are necessary and have to be made we have to use common sense and look at each cut thoroughly and individualy before diving in head first. The money left over from the stimulous needs to be used efficiately and all earmarks must be stopped. I am not sure that abandoning our friends Isreal especially now as they face even more serious threats from the mideast. To end the relationship we have had could put the people of Isreal in dire straights. we don’t have many allies other than Isreal at the moment. He might be a bit hastey in his ideas. Cuts in the pay and benefits of government workers has to be addressed as well.No more bailouts. No more spending money that we simply don’t have.Get rid of obama care and start over with HC reform. Shut down Freddie and Fannie. Term limits should be put into place. First clean up the greed and corruption in DC. It is not fair that the waste and greed in Washington and their mistakes are carried over to the citizens and dumped into our laps. It is not going to be an easy tasks and yes we will all have to make sacrifices. Then we are faced with children without food and families with no where to go.or without the basic necessities to survive. Everything is in such a mess and can not be fixed overnight. We have to remember those of us fortunate enough to have a job will be paying for those that do not.Restrictions from the EPA have to be removed in order to allow drilling and reduce our dependency on foriegn oil. All the unnecessary research has to be temporarly stopped until we restore our economy. Limiting campaign finances would assure fair and equal elections allowing more choices for candidates Regardless the old saying that “Rome wasn’t built in a day” comes to mind as we face our nations biggest challenge.

At what point do we stop paying people just so they will not riot, steal and disrupt society? The responsibility for the riots will be on the rioters and not the people that make the cuts. I am ready to make the sacrifices that need to be made and I am employed by a city government. It is the people that pay the least or none of the taxes that use the most public services and drain our public coffers of wealth.

I commend Senator Paul’s courage and boldness. However, to permanently restrain the federal behemoth we must restore the Constitution’s original meanings and allocation of power to the states. Unfortunately the original constitutional meanings and structure have been so misconstrued and abused by over 70 years of progressive control of the Supreme Court and other branches of the federal government that simple legislative action is not enough. We need to promote amendments to the Constitution to restore its original meaning and structure.

The first step to locking in our current moment of constitutionalist resurgence is to put through an amendment to the amendment process itself which will eliminate the unnecessary convention now required by Article V and permit States to directly initiate amendment proposals. This will break the current de facto federal congressional and judicial monopoly on interpreting the Constitution, and permit grassroots patriots on the state level to restore the Constitution by amendment. Only this can permanently constrain future federal overreach of the sort rejected by the people in November. See http://www.timelyrenewed.com

Make senators appointed by the state governor. That would stop the federal tyranny dead in its tracks. Think about it? It would force them to remain in line with their state or get yanked and replaced. They used to be appointed by the state legislature. A return to that would work too.

      @ Timely
I hear your argument but I can’t sign on just yet. I think Senator Paul is going about it in the proper way. If we can shrink the Federal bureaucracy to is Constitutionally mandated size I believe most (80% ?) of the problems and abuses will disappear. I would rather see us go in that direction first.

We can’t stop with just the cuts that Senator Paul has included in his current legislation. Most of what is the Federal Government today must be completely done away with. Feasibly, that can’t be done in a couple of years. It will probably have to be done over a ten to twenty year cycle to avoid complete chaos.

At that point we should have a Federal Government that operates on a total yearly budget of somewhere between $50B and $75B. Along with the downsizing would have to come repealing all, or most, of the ridiculous regulations that put US business at a competitive disadvantage and makes new business formation cumbersome, if not almost impossible.

It’s going to take time for the private sector to absorb all of the displaced government employees. Many of them will end up working in the State governments as the States take on the duties that should have been theirs all along, but were usurped by the Feds. Even at that it will still take some time for everything to work out completely.

Once all that is done, then maybe we look at further amendment. We really don‘t know how it’s all going to look if we really do stay on the course because none of us were even alive the last time the United States was operated as it was intended. Hell, for the most part our parents and grand parents weren’t alive. I favor letting it “reset” and settle a while before we do any tinkering with further amendments.

      2. Fund (and modify the future of) Social Security.
      3. Fund (but privatize and modify the future of) Medicare.
      IF there is anything left
      a. cut taxes
      b. continue other programs on a “priority of need” basis.

THATS IT. Leave the rest (and the taxes) to the states to do.

How can the Senate propose spending cuts? Don’t spending or cutting proposals have to come from Congress?

I agree with him. Cut federal wages by 40% but do it over 4 years. Can you stand a 25% pay cut in 1 year and not go under? Freeze hiring and reduce personnel levlsl at 2006 numbers. Complete eliminate Education, housing, energy and half of HHS. Gut FEMA. Let people know if there is an emergency or disaster handle it just like your great grandparents did. Do for your self instead of waiting on a roof top for the gov’t to fly over and drop a check and keys to a FEMA trailer. Freeze SSa. Raise the age for those under 45 and allow them to participate in the Thrift Savings plan. Of course Congress is already trying to get that money(ours) and put worthless T-bills in its place.

Hey Deut, congress does not have government healthcare you moron. They have choices of commercial/private plans just like other large companies. We the taxpayers do subsidize but it’s not government healthcare.

All the cuts are great…. Why turn our backs on Israel?
They are surrounded by countries that want them dead all of them.
Israel will cease to exist without us.
It is like adopting a baby and when you loose your job you just dump the child off somewhere.
Do we have friends in this world?
Israel has always stood with us.
