Rare Mutation Leaves People Without Fingerprints

It‘s a criminal’s dream mutation: to be born without fingerprints. In fact, Daily Mail reported John Dillinger, a famous Chicagoan bank robber from the 1930s, had his burned off with acid so he couldn’t be identified by them.

From a scientific standpoint though, there is a reason someone is born without fingerprints and it can be correlated with other symptoms, beyond just an inconvenience when posed with a finger scanner, as well. Recent research out of Tel Aviv University in IsraelĀ on adermatoglyphia, or Immigration Delay Disease, has found the mutation on the SMARCAD1 gene, which influences finger development.

Watch the scientists describe their findings:

According to the research, this gene may also be correlated with sweat gland development, as patients without finger prints often also have fewer sweat glands. Further research will investigate if and how this gene could be related to other skin diseases.

Fingerprints, according to the FBI, are the ultimate personal identifier, as no two people’s fingerprints are alike:

Fingerprints offer an infallibleĀ means of personal identification. Other personal characteristics may change, but fingerprints do not.

Study: Scientists Find Rare Mutation That Leaves Some Without Fingerprints

There are different categories of fingerprint characteristics. (Image: FBI)

The Daily Mail reported that the disease was first identified when a Swiss woman tried to come to the United States. When asked to take her finger prints, the woman said it would be impossible. She and nine other members of her family have the mutation.

With today’s technology, people will be selecting children without fingerprints, blonde hair, and blue eyes.
    Don’t believe me?
Some sperm banks will not ACCEPT “donations” from redheads (“gingers”), and we all KNOW what Hitler/Germany did.

Fingerprints are outdated. I think DNA would be the identifier of choice.

You can’t remove your fingerprints with acid. That is a fallacy. Besides fingerprints, there are palm prints, shoe prints, traces of DNA….if you do the crime, you will do the time. You will get caught.

Actually, if you cause sufficient damage to the epidermis, and to the dermal layer beneath, it will result in scar tissue, thereby eliminating “fingerprints.” I have one such spot on one finger from a meat slicer accident. (I was TOLD not to slice tomatoes on the meat slicer, but I did anyway.) Then, I had the pleasure of driving myself to the emergency room – - the finger was on the right hand, and my car had a standard transmission – stick shift! Talk about fun! lol At least I was slicing “THIN” tomatoes!

you can burn off fingerprints with acid or a flame. but it doesn’t work, the scars left behind are identifiable. Plus, the action of taken such measure is suspicious in itself. Brick layers and other laborers can wear the ridges down temporarily but not all of them. this is resolved by a simple moisturizing lotion we taking a print to identify.

Silly boy, you have no idea why we have fingerprints. Fingerprints enable us to grip things and as we get older they deteriorate and it gets harder and harder to open jars and to hold onto objects. So, if we all did not have fingerprints we would need special tools for gripping, not a ideal situation.

It’s not a disease, it’s a disorder. Big difference. Google (or Bing) Ectodermal Dysplasia. My daughter is has it and doesn’t have fingerprints, among other characteristics (ie…no sweat glands, sparse hair, very few teeth- she has had dentures since the age of 2, she is now a beautiful 18-year-old college student.

Sir Francis Galton (1822-1911) was the first person to state that fingerprints can be used as a scientific basis for individualization during court cases. He calculated that the odds of any two people having the same fingerprints were 1 in 64 billion.

Twins don’t share the same fingerprints.

I almost wish I did not have fingerprints. This would thwart Big Brother when he decides that we have to have our fingers scanned to fly in an airplane for traveling. Although, it would be less intrusive than the current methods.

You can get rid of them, but it is an inconvenience to not have them. Years ago I applied for a government job that required an FBI background check complete with a fingerprint check. But at the time I had no fingerprints because my job at the time involved the extensive use of 80- and 100-grit sandpaper. They couldn’t get a good reading on my fingerprints because the sandpaper had worn them away.

      No fingerprints, no background check.

      No background check, no job.

I had to wear gloves on the job for a few months and return to be fingerprinted two more times before my fingerprints grew back enough for a good reading.

Wouldn’t you know if you have fingerprints? That’s one if the things kids notice pretty early, and look at even more when they learn about fingerprints in elementary school. It should be pretty easy to tell. On the other hand maybe you never notice something you don’t have.
