During an interview on CSPAN’s Book TV Sunday, “Barack Obama: The Story” author David Maraniss unveiled a photo of a young Barack Obama posing with his infamous pot-smoking “Choom Gang.”

“How much pot-smoking did the president do in Honolulu?” asked host Peter Slen.

“Well, you know, he writes about it in his book,” Marannis responded.

“He doesn’t write in particulars about the ‘Choom Gang.’ Ah, you know, the whole notion of Bill Clinton saying he never inhaled, well Barry said ‘that was the point, wasn’t it?’ when Jay Leno asked him about it. And, you know, some of my book — without going overboard — documents it pretty thoroughly,” he added.

“The ‘Choom Gang,‘ that’s what they did,” Marannis said, referring to the gang’s love of “total absorption” (i.e. “hotboxing”). “That was part of his existence during that period.”

      Looks like me and my friends in high school. I smoked a lot of pot, skate boarded, and played in a rock band. Now I’m 51, attend church, and have kids the same age as Obama’s. What’s to see here? I don’t hate Obama, I just completely disagree with his ideology. If anything it makes me identify more with him on a certain level. Lets quit playing gotcha and get down to beating this guy in November.

      You said exactly what I was thinking. The guy seems likeable on some level, but I know in my heart that he wants to destroy America and that’s disturbing to me. The only difference in our stories (yours and mine) is that I’m now 48, and I was raised a Democrat, becoming a Republican in the military.

      Guys that smoked a lot of pot in high school should not be president, no matter what. If you were that ignorant in high school, you certainly didn’t all of a sudden become one of the best and brightest in the nation, and our president should always be one of the best and brightest in the nation, not some I squeaked by lived off the hard work of others, now have kids and go to church type.

      Loriann12, I DON’T find him likeable on ANY level. I ALWAYS found his nose in the air, I’m better than you attitude to be disgusting. And, of course, I find his political views to be both scary and dangerous. And, when he took office, he told the Republican’s in Congress to go to the back of the bus, because HE WON.       Look at his eyes in some of the current pictures. You draw your own conclussions but mine is that it’s not from being overtired. Don’t really need any more dope(s) in the Peoples’ House.       It’s obvious by this photo that at an earlier time Obama liked white people. So I think that sometime in the future he will come to regret the hate he’s shown against white folks during his presidency, the serious division that he’s caused.

      There are good and bad people within all races. Color of the skin is a pigment issue. What white folks don’t like about black folks (or red, or yellow, or white) is the constant “whining”. Get over it. What black folks don’t like about white folks is….??? I really don’t know. I just know that many (not all) black folks hate white folks??? Actually, I’m not quite sure black folks really know why they hate white folks. I’m from the country in Oregon. Hardly any black-skinned people live here. We can go years without seeing a black-skinned person. No reason to hate them. What we hate here (out West) are the welfare types who just keep making babies and won’t work. Or the druggies that steal from the working class, hurt they’re brain and body and then go on disability. Which are all white in this part of the world. And then there’s the lazy bunch…

      But when I lived for 7 years in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama I saw for myself that most black folks hated white folks. But the white folks didn’t hate the black folks. What the white folks said was “Black folks just have different ways about them…we don’t hate them?. So as an Oregonian I was shocked to see how much the black folks hated the whit

      Independents now know who he is, and in huge numbers . . . the past few months I’ve been approached by so many who previously were afraid to admit their prior vote for the guy, but now are proud to announce they’ll be voting him out.

      November can’t come fast enough . . . just keep his schedule tied up with campaign appearances so he can’t do any more damage between now and then.

      @sWampy that‘s where you don’t really know what you’re talking about. My Valedictorian in high school, the biggest pot head in our class of 33, was the basketball star player and went on to be a neurosurgeon in a very big hospital (which I won‘t mention to keep his identity secret and so there’s no connection with me). Pot smoking has nothing to do with intelligence. That said, I don’t believe the stories that Obama has a high IQ anymore than I believe his “Parents” lived together and his dad left when he was 2.

      You guys need to find another avenue. Marijuana is not a bad thing. As a matter of fact it is curing many different types of cancer, the latest I heard was yesterday on NBC about it curing breast cancer. There are too many other reasons that he needs to go. How about the one thing he did accomplish is unconstitutional, and his 4 years as president will have been a total waste of time because we are just going to have to rewind everything. He’s not a natural born citizen, but I’ll drop that. Final proof of that will just prove America a fool for not checking under the hood before buying. I’d like to know why it is on almost every issue, that he goes the wrong way? It‘s almost like he’s testing everyone to see how dumb everyone really is. He’s a likeable guy. He just absolutely the wrong choice for America. Not that Romney is the right choice. It seems America has written off the only true American that really wants to do the right thing and save America. Sad thing is…this is absolutley our last chance to save her. We are at the brink of “Impossible to recover”. We won’t get any more second chances because it will be too late. I don‘t like one or two of RP’s ideas, but the fact is, he is the only one that has offered us a choice that will return America to greatness. If we don’t somehow figure out how to get RP in the White House, any other choices won’t really count.

    Don’t get me wrong–I believe the man should be impeached, as he is the most dangerous thing ever to happen to the country and there are a number of impeachable offenses that he has committed since taking office.
    And there are plenty of things to look at in his background that bear investigation as well.
    But the fact that he smoked a lot of dope when he was a kid when some kids smoked a lot of dope? Not really an issue. Yes, there may be brain chemistry issues with long-term marijuana use, but I don’t think those have evidenced in him yet.
    We should look at the damage he is trying to do to the country now, now the damage that he might have done to himself then.

No wonder he can’t memorize crap and need a teleprompter, the pot has chemically made him mentally weaker and more apt to buy into communism, socialism, and marxism. They are the weaker ideologies, because you don’t have to think, you just follow the leader and get your little portion with a grateful smile. What freaks me out at night sometimes, is that I picture this Kenyan in a Defcon 1 situation and prepared to give the order to push a button. He’s good at giving orders, and signing them without any constitutional restraint. People, just say no. We’ll need as many clear headed people as we can get, when everything goes straight to hell.

    Now I gotta say I am perplexed, truly, by a Barry Obama that has popped up in photo after photo in his youth always surrounded by white folk, always having a good time, being the guy that stands out and got special attention… white folk that cannot seem to understand the trials he had to endure as a black man.

    Enter Barrack Hussein Obama (transition from mid college) into the political arena is considered a foriegner, a minority, that has strived thru society (w/ marxists carrying him all the way) all on his own. Suddenly has an interest in black women, community organizing, black theology, civil rights of minorities, and involves himself in hate churches like Rev Wright or NOI.

    President Obama presently parties mostly with white folk…and rich black celebrities. Yeah truly a down to earth individual. He will get the gullible to vote for him because he panders w/o substance and is superficial. Now that implies celebrities (check), minorities (check), college hippies (check), special interest groups (check), marxists (check), and sheep (check). Those people do not make up our country and run our lives. The president presented himself as a phoney and his words are phoney. How can we entrust our very way of life and the generations to come to a person willing to lie to us repeatedly for personal gain.

    Might be the ONLY thing I agree with the president (no capital “P” for this guy) on. I am not a pothead, but MJ “slows” my brain down when it “races”. I do not know how else to explain it. I do not support “hotboxing”, but I do see some benefits of MJ. There may be better ways, and I hope there are, but alcohol is NOT one of them. I am not an advocate, but I am not an opponent.       Many people minimize the risks of marijuana. That’s another discussion. What concerns me is that a majority of Americans voted for him even after he admitted to abusing pot and cocaine. No other presidential candidate would have gotten away with that…we used to hold the office to a higher standard. May be that’s what gets me the most, we no longer have any standards. How about Lidsey Lohan for potus.

      Think it was for political advantage. That it was all part of the Barry to Barack phase when he became a community organizer in Chicago and hooked up with Rev. Wright.       They say when you start using pot regularly that your brain stays at the mentality at which you started, If start when you are thirteen then your mind pretty much stays thirteen, for heavy use of course….. Choom sounds like heavy use to me, so how old was he?? That explains a lot.

      I have to agree with the comments here. I have a family member that started at an early age and it is very evident. Can’t hold down a regular job, relationship, etc. Expects everyone else to take care of him and thinks you owe him. Thinks my parents should take care of him because he is their son. Got mad at us and broke into our house, stole food, dvds, etc. Doesn’t seem to understand others feelings or why they would be upset with them. We should understand because of what we did. Not giving him money and all. He has no maturity and spits in your face at the same time you are dropping off groceries at his house or the ten bucks he asked to “borrow” which miraculously, you never see again. It does destroy people and keeps people from having a good life. Sad. Really, really sad.

That, in combination with the fact that the past few presidents have admitted to smoking weed and trying other drugs, should be proof positive that the war on drugs is a ridiculous act of futility. If someone can smoke weed and grow up to become President of the US of A, how bad can this “drug” be?

      This is almost irrefutable evidence that it isn’t the marijuana that is causing crimes and broken futures, but the act of criminalizing it is. He did fine. He grew up, grew out of it and became president. As Penn had argued, all it would have taken was ONE bust, ONE bust of a simple joint and this man would have had his life ruined with no chance of a successful life. That should show you that it is not the drug but the policy that is the problem.

      What you put into your body is YOUR choice to make. Not mine. Not the governments. YOURS.

      @AM.SOL. – I‘m not interested in what he ’did’ before he bacame President. However, I’m very interested in what he puts into OUR body now. Yes, our body. He’s supposed to be our leader, the CIC of the free world. I EXPECT rational, clear-headed decisions 24/7/365 for his term. Call it a sense of duty to be clean for his term(s), (God forbid). He holds the power of annihilation in his hands. He needs to step up to it and wield it responsibly. So far, I’m not impressed.

      Oh yeah..and such a cash cow. The L.A. Times just ran a story that those “necessary” medical marijuana clinics have been hiding their profits from the tax man. It’s an industry born from crime..and you expect it to be honest? Putting a suit and tie on marijuana is the same as lipstick on a pig. Savvy?
