Rare Rembrandt Exhibit Brings Jesus’ Image to Life

Rembrandt and the Face of Jesus Art Exhibit to Open in Philadelphia, PennsylvanniaPHILADELPHIA (The Blaze/AP) — A new exhibit coming to the Philadelphia Museum of Art takes a fresh look at religious paintings, drawings and prints by one of history’s most revered artists.

“Rembrandt and the Face of Jesus” debuts Wednesday in Philadelphia, after its three-month premiere run at the Louvre Museum in Paris. It’s the only East Coast stop for the exhibit, which continues through Oct. 30 and contains works from public and private collections in the U.S. and Europe.

The exhibition of more than 50 works by the Dutch master and his pupils notably includes a group of oil paintings of Jesus Christ. These pieces of art have not been seen together since they left Rembrandt’s Amsterdam studio in 1656.

Timothy Rub, chief executive officer and director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, called the show “a rare moment to observe the image of Jesus through the imagination of this artistic genius whose life was devoted to representations of biblical truths.”

Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) revolutionized the artistic portrayal of biblical themes, which for more than 1,000 years rigidly represented Christ as an unemotional and formalized figure. These “true” images of Jesus were copied from ancient prototypes, in part to avoid violating the Second Commandment that forbids idolatry, until Rembrandt broke with time-honored artistic convention and began using live models.

Still more radical was his use of a model who many historians believe was a Jewish man likely from Rembrandt’s Amsterdam neighborhood – where many Sephardic Jews settled after fleeing the Iberian Peninsula during the Inquisition. In the seven reunited oil on oak panel paintings that are the cornerstone of the exhibit, Rembrandt’s young model conveys a variety of thoughtful gazes that bring him to life in a way no artist had done before – and departs from the then-customary depiction of him as sandy haired and fair skinned.

Rembrandt and the Face of Jesus Art Exhibit to Open in Philadelphia, Pennsylvannia“This was very likely the first time in the history of Christian art that Jesus appeared to be Jewish,” curator Lloyd De Witt said. He added that seeing all of the works together provides ample evidence for “moving this previously marginalized group of panels back to the center of a discussion about Rembrandt’s theology, spirituality and expressive power.”

Rembrandt used at least two of the small “Head of Christ” portraits as sources for later paintings now recognized as among his greatest works: “Supper at Emmaus” – last seen in the U.S. in 1936 – and “The Hundred Guilder Print,” also on view in the exhibition.

“Rembrandt and the Face of Jesus” will make its final stop at the Detroit Institute of Arts from Nov. 20 until Feb. 12

He taught us the truth about the Jews.

Unfortunately the Jews have been trying to bury and ridicule him since.

If any jew here were to accept Jesus Christ, their whole lives & existence would change unimaginably for the better.

““Sandy haired and fair skinned?” Where in hell has that ever occurred? I‘m getting sick of so many sources making such a claim when I’ve never seen such a depiction. Just another way to demonize whites as being biased.”

Gig180: “Maybe you need to go to an “art gallery” and view some Renaissance religious art?”

Robert: Renaissance religious art? What has a specific period in time hundreds of years ago have to do with iconic depiction in the modern era? I mean it is in this era we have gotten the most flack as if the practice is a common occurrence. I hear it from white-hating non-Christians on television, telling us we need to change our view of a blue-eyed, fair-haired Jesus, although most everybody is unaware of what they might be talking about and that the accuser just despises white Christians and is looking for just one more way of demonizing them. They mention it as if it is common practice.

And your feeble attempt to bolster that criticism with reference to religious art by a small group of people hundreds of years ago is a feeble attempt at rebuttal that’s truly pitiful.

Uh, Robert? The text you were responding to is in reference to conventional representations of Christ DURING the Renaissance (the period in which Rembrandt lived and worked): “Rembrandt’s young model conveys a variety of thoughtful gazes that bring him to life in a way no artist had done before – and departs from the then-customary depiction of him as sandy haired and fair skinned.”

The point is that THESE Renaissance-era religious paintings by Rembrandt contrast with those conventional Europeanized representations. So — if you are not familiar with this artistic convention, looking at paintings from that period might clarify for you.

It must be painful to view the world through such anger and narrow-mindedness,

Uh, GIG, old boy, better read my post again. You were telling me in your last post that it was common practise to depict Christ as blond-haired and blue-eyed by telling me I should check out Renaissance art and my response brought up the point that I was referencing complaints in THIS ERA about a fair-haired Jesus in my orignal comments, which makes the Renaissance example a moot point. Stated another way…uh, Gig……You were referencing “then,“ which has nothing to do with ”now.” It is you who can’t follow a logical line of argument.

Do you understand, uh, Gig, that people are still claiming that Jesus is being depicted today the same way the author above describes the fair-haired depiction during the Renaissance?

So much hogwash going on here – NO ONE has any idea of what Jesus looked like – whether he had short hair, long hair, a beard, how tall or how short he was. His ancestry is all guess work – even if you use your Book – his grandmother x generations back was a Moabite and further back his ancestry leads to him being a Chaldean. Perhaps some real Egyptian and Babylonian (Iraqi) thrown in. His religion was Judaism, he went to Synagogue and to the Temple.

He probably would not resemble any “Jew” today as most of them have a mixed heritage of all that he was plus a little German, Russian, Spanish, French and or Italian mixed in.

That’s not what hte bible says about him, or his appearance anyway. He wasn’t handsome.

2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, [there is] no beauty that we should desire him.
      Isa 53:3
3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were [our] faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
      Isa 53:4
4 ¶ Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

But I don’t care how he looks.

The most ancient of the holy ikons of Christ are remarkably similar in their portrayal of Him. Also, despite being more than 200 years distant from Christ’s time, they are artistically sophisticated and adhere to a common formula, or follow a common artistic tradition: in other words, it is evident they are following an artistic tradition which is already well-established. In other other words: they are probably accurate representations of much older works of art which actual contemporaries of Christ would have seen. In other other other words: Eastern Orthodox ikons of Christ are probably reasonably accurate depictions.

The Ten Commandments are summarized in the two Commandments of Jesus: Love God, and love your neighbor.
The Ten Commandments tell us to worship only the One True God, and not to steal, hurt our neighbors, lie, to be chaste before marriage, and to honor the marriage bond.
Our Creator gives us free will, and with that gift comes the burden of choice. We can choose to do God’s will. Or not.

    The Fountain

    Will you hold my hand
I am after all very scared
not of you but of who I am
the victim of love I survived
    your love, every desire known
in the coliseum I challenged you
your love, your dream and reality.

The streets are empty of the clowns
for Mardi Gras ended, the world fasts
as are our dreams, your love is forever
that none dare betray one another’s love
for who but you cares about our struggles
the second hand act has never been written
that will never end love found by a fountain.

The fountain we drink from, this well of love
to each we refresh and renew too cherish each
in a kiss by a touch for the breath of life to live
sent to return to the Pool of Siloam for this love
given freely to you and all by the servant of God
who never questioned your love from that day on
for we came to know the greatest love ever known.

Rembrant and his students testify to the fact of faith in Jesus and God in seeing him via his life and humanity upon the earth.

Jesus is the fulfillment of the capabilities humanity can achieve when united with the divine spirit and guidance of God, the firm reliance we have upon and with Him and our risen Lord and Saviour Jesus.

Most of tradition (non scripture based tradition) of centuries and millenia have enshrouded the fact of the divinity of Jesus while overlooking to one extent or another the human side of the story as well. To show, as Rembrandt has, the daily and fully human aspects of him — he worked, he built, he taught and tired, he travelled in his mission, and he shows his human side with the death of Lazarus in the shortest of versus in the bible “Jesus wept.”

Understand the two true sides of his greatness on earth — his humanity and the divinity of God in him during those years of his life and mission. The magnitude of what they both did for us becomes even more personal and wonderful at the same time.

I know there are many who will disagree with me to one extent or another, and that is fine; I just ask for you to search the scriptures themselves, especially the gospels, and with the reliance and gudiance of God with His spirit, find the fires of truth revealed that will burn off the old traditions and forge anew the truths revealed unto you.

And yes, I still learn new things with each journey into the scriptures as well.

@Khaliv — no, not Catholic; I am an independant Christian Chaplain (and have done the seminary school route) who has left the Seventh Day Adventist faith due to so many man made doctrines that have come into the system…I follow the good book as the beginning and ending in all matters of the faith and a firm reliance in the guidance and teaching of God by the Holy Spirit.

All I can say is this, and take it for what value you decide to assign it: Look and search with an honest and open mind and heart; study with the Holy Spirit guiding you into truth; and where there seems to be contradicitons and doubts on subjects, ask for God to show you through it, for often there will be two or more stories connected He is wishing you to see and learn.

Quite often in study guided by Him, we will find solutions to challenges and opportunites that yet are down the road for us; He gives them ahead of time to help us out.

SNOW: The Bible (New Testament of course) was written by Catholics (Peter who built His Church on this rock…not these rocks).. and the beautiful thing about the Catholic faith is that it is true yesterday, today and tomorrow…not to be confused with the human error and frailties what effect all faiths..but the direction of the Faith that has been preserved and protected all these years is from GOD.

A great course that people may enjoy is the THE GREAT ADVENTURE..composed by a former Protestant Preacher and scholars (Jeff Cavins, Scott Hahn and Tim Grey) which, once taken (takes about 24 weeks) will give anyone the TIME LINE for the BIBLE. No longer will you see it as miscellaneous books and ‘stories’ but ONE story…with the PROPHETS shining the light on the way.
You will understand how Israel came into being 6000 years ago, how the stage was always being set for JESUS.

The “GRAVEN IMAGES” refers to items OTHER THAN GOD . We Catholics do not pray TO Statues…for example (before I converted I thought the Catholics did…I thought a lot of silly things that thank GOD I don’t think now)…but like asking for help in prayer…as in Pray with me Saint XXX (one who had been in similar problems and would best understand. My favorite prayer is : Oh My Jesus, forgive our sins. Save us from the Fires of Hell. Lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of thy mercy. Think about it non-believers. See if you can reach Him.

Gerrymander – It is idols. God did not want people INVENTING an image of Him and then turning it into an idol. With Jesus, God finally had a face. Protestantism could not have existed until the invention of the printing press. The vellum used for a Bible alone would cost 7 years wages and that was before the years spent copying the Bible word by word. Most of the world was illiterate because there were not books around to read. The word of God was transmitted through the spoken word, all of the Gospels and the epistles and most of the Old Testement are covered in three year cycle of readings at Mass. The other way is through pictures to remind them of the stories they had heard. Jesus didn’t say do whatever until the 16th Century when you can have access to a Bible, he set up the Church to care for the flock. One the whole they did a marvelous job, the deposit of faith is still here. There were Judases, but even Jesus had a Judas.

@Gigi80 — As of this time no I am not a pastor of an active church; as for my artwork, secular it may be indeed, yet at this time of my life it is a focus for me to deal with stress and enjoy the challenge of new ways of doing pastels and pencil.

Believe it or not, a fair number of pastors I have known or do currently know do arts and crafts in many secular ways — mostly as hobbies to deal with stress. One former pastor friend (he has gone to missionary in Haiti) used to bake rice crispy treats, and pastires to give away to people; not for any money, just to give away as he enjoyed cooking.

Another group called the ‘Krazy Quilters’, retired nuns and deconesses of churches; gather to make quilts by hand, and sell these for charity to support the premature children wing of the local hospital.

I will not ask of you to take my words on the matter alone; if you know or deal with a pastor, ask it of them what they do for hobbies, outside of the church…the answers are usually interesting and often quite humorous.

Just because the Catholic church CLAIMS Peter was the first Catholic Pope doesn’t make it true. There’s no evidence at all. And virtually all of the major doctrines of the Church didn’t become official teachings until the 3rd century. At best the Catholic Church can trace it’s origins back to the days of Constantine.

I think you may have missed my point — I was asking about YOUR experience, as you seem to be giving “pastor-like” lessons about religion here. My understanding is that you are a medical supply salesman and an “artist” of sorts (I assume your art might address subjects other than the weirdly sexualized and feminized cats). As an adult, a teacher, with the usual social, family and professional contacts, I obviously know many people in the religious community, including a nephew who is a Doctor of Divinity, friends who are nuns and pastors, and the priests in my own parish. One would have to be pretty naive and shallow to imagine that these people do not have hobbies and avocations outside of their professional domain.

My concern is with one who identifies himself/herself as some sort of religious authority, yet who makes critical comments about adherents to other faiths, particularly in a forum in which some participants apparently have (and seemingly want) limited experience in the wider world.

If you are interested in the face of Jesus, look closely at the shroud of Turin. This, by no one’s estimation was created the way a Rembrandt painting was created. There is no paint, no pigment. The image is a negative image. Remember 35mm photography. The negatives that you get with your prints are opposite in light and dark from the printed photograph. When the shroud was first photographed in 1898, it was the visual observation of the negative that revealed the positive 3 dimensional image of the man crucified. The development of the negative into a positive print only reveals the negative image on the shroud. Even with the disputed age of the shroud being in the 14th century, which is inaccurate , no one can explain how someone created a negative 3 dimensional image, anatomically correct, on linen in the 14th century before photography was invented.

Actually, the carbon dating was later explained scientifically. One of the original scientists on the Carbon Dating test. Decided to take things one step further. Because the Shroud have been through a fire while in the silver box, he wondered whether the heat of being “baked” would affect things. So he took one piece of another cloth from the same time, cut a piece off of it and subjected it to the same “baking’. The “baked cloth” tested 800 years younger than the unbaked cloth from the same piece of material. He wrote a book about it as well as other pollen and mineral deposits on the shroud. To me the neatest thing was small grains of minerals around the knees that is only found around the area of Jerusalem. This person fell and skinned their knees in Jerusalem.

Jesustheway: Thank you. National Geographic recently did an amazing program on the Shroud. They were even able to, with modern technology, show what the face of Jesus would look like. It was wonderful!

“Rembrandt’s young model conveys a variety of thoughtful gazes that bring him to life in a way no artist had done before – and departs from the then-customary depiction of him as sandy haired and fair skinned.”

“Sandy haired and fair skinned?” Where in hell has that ever occurred? I‘m getting sick of so many sources making such a claim when I’ve never seen such a depiction. Just another way to demonize whites as being biased.

I‘m from the Midwest and I’ve never seen a fair-haired Jesus. Every icon of him has always been of a James Caveziel look-a-like, brown hair and brown eyes. But it wouldn’t have mattered to anyone if he were black-haired, swarthy or not, because he was a holy figure and would have been regarded in the same high esteem.

But not among other groups. Latins need a Jesus that looks like them, according to Linda Chavez, and many blacks show Jesus as black. But we hear nothing of either depiction no matter how biased and nonsensical they might be, since the entire area was inundated with Semitic people and those from the European continent, back as far as 5000 B.C., so a Latin or black Jesus would have been quite a phenomonen.

Exodus 20:4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above…” Any statue or painting of Christ or God is prohibited by the Bible, just as it is in the Koran. Those two texts agree on that point as on many others.

I don’t think the penalty is spelled out, stoning maybe, or eternal damnation. Something really bad. Anyway, let’s just ignore that biblical injunction. I’m afraid the toothpaste is out of the tube on this one, and how would we enforce that anyway?

I wonder why ATHEISTS troll around RELIGIOUS sites to mock people? Are you so afraid of the LIVING GOD that you need to keep taking pot shots? Many people have and still see Jesus and HE inspires their thoughts and drawings. THE fact that you have made yourself left out is your problem.
GO AWAY poor, pathetic little atheist. I pity you. YOU have come to the stadium but you’ve missed the
game. Why do YOU think you are here? Something exploded and made you? What caused the explosion? What caused the thing that was exploded to be there? How do you explain LOVE?

Albert Einstein was sent small religious icons and statues from religions people the world over, and he kept them in his hallway and study, like a shrine of sorts. Once a visiting Jew asked him, “Albert, you’re a Jew, and not a very religious one… why keep all these crucifixes and icons in the house?” Einstein replied, “What could it hurt?” (True story!!)

LACT: GOD is and always was. GOD knew you even before the laying of the foundation of the universe. GOD in the form of JESUS CHRIST came to abide among us to redeem us from the disobedience of mankind when we first learned to ignore HIM. CHRIST, on the cross, took and became the sin of mankind to pay the ransom for our souls. The ONLY way to GOD is through the faith in JESUS CHRIST and by GOD’s grace. If I am wrong and you are right, I haven’t missed much, however, if I am right and you are wrong . . . you have lost everything. I pray GOD will move in your life and you will find HIM before hell finds you.

@LIBERAL_ATHEIST_CRITICAL_THINKER…I’m going a little off topic here….liberals demand their freedom of speech, expression, etc….but why is it when others have their own opinion the first thing you liberals do is run us down…that being said I do respect your opinion and beliefs…so respect ours, I choose to believe in God because I want to, but I won’t force my belief down your throat the same way you try to cram your belief down our throats…so knock it off…you came in here purposely to start a fight, and for that you should be ashamed, but I know you won’t.I’m not going to call you names or run you down for your belief, but i’m sure you are going to try and run me down you go on and live your life the way you want to, and leave the rest of us alone. God Bless you always, and yes I will pray for you.

Absolutely wonderful art, this is truly a rare opportunity for kids to be inspired and see Jesus and see a true master of arts craft, everyone should try to get their local schools to take the kids, boy scouts and girl schools to go see and try to get many local papers to report on this wonderful exhibition

      I’ve just reported you.
Stating your opinion about our faith is different from your childish, offensive and obnoxious name-calling. WE worship JESUS the CHRIST as our LORD and SAVIOR. IT is not acceptable in polite society to mock HIS name in anyway. I don’t care if you are on drugs or just a fool, but I will not stand by and allow you to take MY LORD’S name and try to ridicule HIM.
What is so pathetic about you is that one day you will find out who this wonderful, loving man is. YOU will also find out that HE is not a pushover. Buh Bye.
