(AP) — Utah public transit officials who released footage of a commuter train plowing into a car say they hope the footage teaches drivers and pedestrians to be safer around rails.
A 29-year-old man was injured when his car careened through crossing arms and into the path of an oncoming TRAX train Tuesday in West Jordan, about 15 miles south of Salt Lake City.
Onboard cameras captured the crossing arms falling from the force and the crushed sedan. The Utah Transit Authority released the video to media outlets Friday.
West Jordan police say the car was traveling parallel to the train before turning right at an intersection and onto the tracks.
Utah Transit Authority spokesman Gerry Carpenter says the crash comes after the worst year on record for accidents involving the Salt Lake City-area light rail system. The system saw 13 accidents involving trains and the public, including five deaths.

Posted on January 9, 2012 at 3:14amI’ve lived here (Utah) for 13 years and yes…UT drivers SUCK! Not as bad as Cali or NV drivers (I really watch out for those guys), but bad nonetheless

Posted on January 8, 2012 at 8:43pmIt doesn’t matter what state it happened in. When stupid people drive around train tracks…stupid people end up getting hit. The long and the short of this story is there was a fool behind the steering wheel of the car.

Posted on January 8, 2012 at 8:46amI live near Salt Lake, and can say that some Utah drivers are absolute idiots when it comes to train track crossings. It seems like every other week I hear about an accident involving a car and the TRAX. There have been a few pedestrian mishaps too, if you can believe it.
To be fair, I think part of the problem, in some areas, is the way the TRAX was built. In many places it occupies what used to be a normal traffic lane (for the past 100 years!), runs within a few feet of and parallet to normal street traffic. IN those areas there are NO crossing bars. Sadly, in these areas we’ve lost a few pedestrians. I think it poses more of a hazard to tourists walking downtown, who are not used to the system.

Posted on January 7, 2012 at 7:25pmGood call HAWKEYETX: the crossing arms are vertical! With a sound barrier and no functioning crossing guard anyone could turn into the path of destruction.

Posted on January 7, 2012 at 11:39pmIf you watch closely you can see that it landed that way after the car hit it, the crossing guard was down far enough to be struck by the vehicle.

Posted on January 7, 2012 at 6:36pmThe fence is a sound barrier. I bet the driver was a crazy radical born again Christian. Pay attention to the signs. The truth shall set you free. It was most likely a zombie Ron Paul athletic supporter!!!

Posted on January 7, 2012 at 4:36pmActually the driver was texting his wife telling her that he was going to have to go to the hospital to get the seat removed surgically from his butt.

Posted on January 7, 2012 at 4:34pmHe was busy texting his wife, telling her that he would be late for dinner. Because he was too stupid to notice a train coming at him. He must be deaf also! Where I live the trains blow their horns at all intersections. Whether their is traffic or not.

Posted on January 8, 2012 at 6:07amlocal regulations vary – some are based on time, others on the speed of the train, etc.

Posted on January 7, 2012 at 4:33pmHahaha they built a wall next to the track so that you can’t see the train coming. Good one. They should spread some candies on the track so the kids will go out and gather them.

Posted on January 7, 2012 at 5:31pmLiving in Utah the last 13 years I can attest to the fact that Utah has some of the nations WORST drivers and with texting a constant it is downright dangerous. This crossing is just down from my house and I pass it two times a day most days. I have called because I see school kids walking between the two sets of tracks like it is the safest place to walk home from school. Unreal!

Posted on January 7, 2012 at 11:57pmPatty, relax. This is God’s way of improving the gene pool. Let people do whatever they want. Eventually, everyone will be smart enough to do the right thing . . . say, in about another 10,000 years.

Posted on January 7, 2012 at 6:14pmI doubt that this was an elaborate physics test. Or an assertion of the vehicle’s perceived strength.
