Read Beck’s Message on Future of Media: ‘We Are on the Verge of Revolution’

Beck to Media Conference: We Are at a Split Right Now

Glenn Beck laid out his vision on the future of digital media Tuesday, telling an audience at a New York media conference that traditional television is on its way out and an interactive, user-directed experience is on its way in.

Speaking at the Advertising Age Media Evolved conference in Manhattan, two months after the launch of online-only GBTV, Beck suggested the media world is at a crossroads between young and old.

“I don’t know anybody under 30 who is watching television,” Beck said in an onstage interview with Betsy Morgan, president of The Blaze. “We are at a split right now. The generation that is my age — slightly over 50, 55 — they’re not using iPad. They don’t get it, they don’t want it….They’re still using television, that’s their comfort zone. The younger generation, that’s not their comfort zone, it‘s a stupid box that you’re tied to.”

Ad Age has more:

Mr. Beck, who called this moment “one of the most exciting times [in media] since the printing press,” forecast a future in which audiences have much more personalized control over content — deciding, for example, to slow down or speed up one of Mr. Beck’s signature, chalkboard-guided tirades with more or less on-screen context.

“It’ll have two arrows — that way to dumb down, that way to dumb up,” he said. “You don’t have to stay at my level, you can go below me, you can go above me. The revolution that’s coming is about the individual.”

“Don’t let some fat-cat executive [determine programming]. You decide that,” Mr. Beck said.

The Hollywood Reporter added:

[H]e emphasized that focusing on traditional media delivery would have kept him from helping pioneer new models. “We are on the verge of revolution” that is as profound as the Industrial Revolution was, but will happen much faster, Beck said. “We‘ll find out soon whether we’re too early or not.”

His estimate was that his focus on a new type of media empire may be three to five years ahead of its time. But following a tipping point in the media industry, “delivery as you want it” will become the standard, he predicted.

The revolution that is in the works “is all about the individual,” he added. “It is so close to the American Revolution. It’s about you.”

He told his audience that as a result, in the future, no media executive would get to tell consumers which show is on or off. “The days of 500 sat channels [are] over,” Beck said. “You have to know exactly who you are” and who your audience is. After all, people these days look for myriad opinions on different sites where they know what to expect.

Speaking directly to advertisers, Beck urged them not to treat viewers “like they’re morons.”

“Stop treating your viewers like they’re morons. They’re not morons,” Beck said. “You’ve got to start respecting people….People are people! Respect the end-user. Respect the end-user. Even if you don’t agree with them, respect them, and they will be loyal to the end of time, because you stood up for what you believe in.”

If social media response is any indication, Beck’s talk was well-received among those watching, who posted their real-time observations on Twitter:

Beck to Media Conference: We Are at a Split Right Now

Beck to Media Conference: We Are at a Split Right Now

Even a user who apparently disagrees with Beck’s politics found reason to enjoy his talk:

Even if you think about the way they are still watching TV, it’s not that different than getting it on demand over the internet since many TV users will use TIVO or something else to choose what they are watching when they want to watch it. A subscription to something like Hulu Plus, GBTV, or some other video site will be cheaper than a satellite or cable subscription.

ENCINOM – You are a major part of the problem we are having in the USA. You spout ridiculous statements and don’t “clean your own backyard”. What you wish for your fellow man, even “joking” or “sarchastic”, is what you are projecting from inside yourself. Obviously, you do not believe in overcoming any personal character problems, which we all have, thus you lash out at others in order to make yourself look good. I am flawed and have character flaws. However, I don’t use other people as those to blame for my insecurities. Be a part of the solution! When someone blames, which is really believing that one is a victim, that person does not usually ever have a solution to any of the problems. If you have a solution, have the courage to share it, and we can all benefit. Your approach, however well intended, cannot help you or me.

I recently invested in an Apple Mini for use as a home media server. I use the Mini and a program called Plex to manage my movie and TV program library, and to watch GBTV and other online programming sources. Dish Network is about to get my cancellation call.

One thing I learned about our viewing habits was that we used to watch TV just because it was turned on. It served as background noise almost all of the time, pouring wacko indoctrination into our living room for hours each evening. Now we watch with purpose, only viewing what we want to see when we want to see it.

Combined with a local TV antenna for local news and weather, this is all we need.

I’m 68, Oct ‘10 when my phone, internet and satellite bill reach $170 a month, I had enough. So I purchased a computer, set it beside my big screen tv, hooked it to my computer and presto I now can watch local channels via antenna or by the click of my tv control I have a desk top with icons. I bought a air-mouse “loop” from Amazon and can watch hundreds of shows by just a click. My current bill is GBTV $4, Netflix is $8. phone $2.47 a month.

BTW I chunked my phone as well and now only pay $2.47 taxes each month using Ooma I got at Best Buy.

The problems are that both in ideology, views, politics people are just going to listen to those that have their views and propaganda so become more out of touch with others views and or reality like Liberals; this lack of perspective will cause even greater ideology views politics gap divide and blind many to state control. While internet current causes greater dialog of views the websites invisiblely hid censorship and control of topics, comments, wordage, views this if controlled by the govnm as is looming would both control and target any dissention!

Glenn Beck’s got it right. Though I would caution that he not write off the baby boomers. Most of them have cancelled their cable and are looking for their news elsewhere as well. They too are sick of the lies that the government MSM has been spouting for years now and they don’t trust them anymore. Believe me, I know.

Glenn, your timing is right on with GBTV. People are looking for the truth and they think they can get it from you because you are not owned. You are your own man. You and your GBTV are precisely what we have been looking for for years now. And don’t ever underestimate your world appeal. You need some translators to get the word out to all the people around the world. Believe me, it will make a difference because it is the people who will ultimately have to hold these thug-globalist institutions and their globalist thug-manipulator’s feet to the fire.

World people-communication is going to be the name of the game in the future. Because all our Marxist and Nazi Western thug-governments have been taken over by the tyrannical global Marxists and Mohammedists whose game is to betray we the people into subserviance, and we the people are going to take them down through the court of public opinion and the knowledge of history where all totalitarian governments have led to death by government and there has been no exception.

Keep up your great work of educating us all on history, especially American history, that we never learned in any school.

I’m a geek, who was an athlete, and a pretty fair student through College. I keep an open ended account for the internet, but don’t pay a dime for television. My family room has 6 42″ monitors so that I can view currently airing programs from around the world, or, during the Big 2 season (College Football and Basketball) watch anywhere from 6 – 24 games all at once, or drop one to dedicated online surfing. I’m able to access any feed that has a strong enough up link or beams from signal towers, including radio.

Beck is right on, but there’s still a good way to go in creating a secure net to ensure providers can actually profit. As it stands now access and the ability to change any picture.signal to true high def and make it interactive, is only a click away.

My wife an I have a Sony Flat screen LED TV. I have a HP HDMI wireless transmitter which transmits the Laptop signal to my TV. We watch more live streaming video in that HDMI mode than Satellite TV now. I’m considering canceling my Dish network services, more and more programming is becoming available via INTERNET. We watch GBTV through the week and http://www.njbc.org on Sundays for our spiritual services because I am disabled and unable to attend church services. I made the statement to my wife about 10 years ago that the time would come when we would view our news sources, entertainment, and all our communications would come from the same box! I was right on!

I’m with you. As soon as an NFL package and NCAA football is available on ROKU, DirecTV is gone at my house.

He probably pays more in his taxes in one year than you have in your whole life, after all you intellectual types produce SO much (aside from hot air).

Love my ROKU.. just wish my internet provider didn’t restrict my download bandwidth so much. I have to be careful how much GBTV I watch each month along with other programming or risk overage charges! I do find myself returning to the TV just to conserve bandwidth even when I know there is something I would rather be watching through my ROKU.

The DVR doomed watching live TV for me. The thing I like about internet TV is only paying for what you want.

I like the concept. I bought the ROKU to get to get GBTV. After you play with it for a while, you can see this will be the future. Only pay for the programing you want. It will be fun to watch the liberal media dissolve like the Wicked Witch of the West.

Gonzo, as a ROKU owner, I could not agree more. My grandkids can watch God-centered programming on Netflix, but getting GBTV was the real reason for getting it! [BTW, Glenn, I'm 60+ and have a Netflix account. SURPRISE!] There is so much content, and the education I get is worth the minimal cost!

So funny, we were with out cable for 2 days–we rarely watch TV but my kids like to watch 2 shoes they had to miss yesterday evening–that all we missed. Anyway something went wrong with our cable connection outside. At first the guys said it was inside–and we’d have to pay for it. So while he was fussing around with stuff my husband says “You know, yesterday I got a coupon for $10 off A Roku and free shipping from Glenn Beck” Amazing how the problem was outside after that.

I don’t have a ROKU but am considering it. The only thing that concerns me is parental control over what my children watch on the ROKU. Can anyone enlighten me here?

GREAT comment Gonzo. My favorite in a long time. Libs are only 20% of the population
but control most of the media and spew their bias. Technology will defeat them.
      Hooray! Joy, joy, joy!
