If you didn’t already know, Christian singer Matt Maher’s “Hold Us Together” is the official theme song for Glenn Beck’s “Restoring Love” event. While you may be familiar with the tune (Beck plays excerpts on radio often), the meaning behind the powerful lyrics and their perfect relation to Beck’s upcoming event is worth delving into. So we decided to interview with Maher to capture the story behind the song’s inception, while also gaining his perspective on the importance of love as a much-needed cohesive force in today’s society.

If you’re unfamiliar with Maher, the singer-songwriter has penned tunes for some of the most respected names in the Christian music world, including Chris Tomlin and Michael W. Smith. His songwriting inevitably led to a robust speaking and performing career in venues across the globe. In 2009, years before “Restoring Love” was conceived, his song, “Hold Us Together,” was released.
“Love will hold us together, make us a shelter, to weather the storm,” the lyrics read. “And I’ll be my brothers keeper, so the whole world will know, that we’re not alone.”
Listen to the song in its entirety, below:
These words capture compassion, love for fellow man and oneness, among other sentiments. When asked what led Maher to write these powerful lyrics, he took us through the intriguing process. It all began with a conversation he had with his stepfather back in 2008. Having a deep respect for him (Maher calls his step-dad one of his “favorite people to talk to”), the singer took the conversation to heart.
“He challenged me as a songwriter to stop writing songs about my faith [and] instead, to try and write songs from my faith,” Maher told TheBlaze in an email. “Obviously as a guy who writes mostly songs that get sung in Church, I did tend to gravitate towards songs about God, rather than coming out of my personal faith and prayer life.”
Maher took his stepfather’s words seriously and began working to allow his faith to infuse his music. At the time, some of the country’s political rhetoric and divisiveness during the highly contentious 2008 presidential election also caused the singer to pause and think twice about the forces separating people so intensely.
“I am an optimist, so I tend to try to find the good in people and situations — even with those that I disagree with,” Maher explained. “But it was hard to find that. From the Paul Krugmans to the Peter Schiffs [on the] economy — the John Stewarts to the Alex Jones of the entertainment and news world — everything was polarized and you’re either completely right, or you’re completely wrong.”
These considerations and the conversation he had with his stepfather set the groundwork. Then, in 2009, as he was about to fly from Nashville to work on his next album, Maher recalls the airport being eerily empty. He remembers watching an airport television and listening to reporters talk about the controversial stimulus bill that was being debated at the time. The economic fear that the nation was gripped with. It was this news report that served as the final straw and the catalyst that set a foundation for “Hold Us Together.”
Watch Maher perform the song, below:
“I got on that flight, and a year and a half’s worth of experiences and emotions and pictures and conversations and arguments (and grace) started to come out in words,” he explained. “And the first phrase was — ‘love will hold us together, make us a shelter to weather the storm, and I‘ll be my brother’s keeper…’”
As the song began to pour from his heart, Maher said that he “became humbled” and was reminded that love is important and worthy enough to be kept at the center of everything worth caring about. The message, as the lyrics began to stream out, was clear: Loving one another is immensely important and a worthwhile ideal to drive home in today’s society.

“Love of God, and love of neighbor — that was what should be at the center, not only of the individual, but of a society; and when it gets removed, when personal connection and responsibility are replaced with a nameless faceless machine — well, it’s no longer human. It’s no longer Incarnational,” he explained.
During the week following his flight, Maher began speaking with another songwriter with whom he shared the chorus that he drafted. It was then that the importance of love being the center of the song truly solidified. He realized that having a tune with a focus on what love truly is, what it can and cannot do and what it “doesn’t promise” would be fascinating.
“You know, the Gospel does not promise wealth. It does not promise earthly success,” he said. “Jesus in the scriptures promises two things — 1. trouble 2. peace in the midst of it.”
Maher has had his own personal struggles — issues that have shaped his views on these matters. As he was developing the song, all of these experiences and insights caused him to realize that his value and faith shouldn’t be rooted in personal wealth, looks or other fleeting elements. Instead, peace and security, Maher says, can’t come from anything but knowing that human beings are “completely known and loved by God.”
“I am found to be deficient in nothing, because I know I am nothing without Him,” he said. “And when I live in this truth, because I know how much I have been given, I am free to serve my fellow man, out of thanksgiving.”
In the end, “Hold Us Together” serves as a song that realistically examines at the concept of “love,” while challenging listeners to see and act upon the power inherent in taking care of one another. Here’s how Maher summarizes the song in one to two sentences:
“To love is to risk and be promised extraordinary highs and lows; it will help you soar through the highs, and carry you through the lows, so you can help carry your neighbor through.”

Among the most rewarding elements to come from the song‘s prominence has been the way in which it positively impacts peoples’ lives, he says. From hearing that it has been used at weddings to having people tell him that they handed their lives over to the Lord after hearing it, Maher says he is “humbled and grateful” for the impact he has made through the music. And now, it will gain new life as the theme song for the historic “Restoring Love” initiative.
Maher also expressed his excitement at the connection between “Hold Us Together” and the event.
“I wrote the song to inspire people to help people,” he said. “The greatest resource we have on this planet are people and they all have dignity and purpose, and need to be lifted up. When I heard about the opportunity to call people to this, it seemed like a great thing to serve.”
Maher also said that he sees nothing wrong with government, but that replacing the individual responsibility to care for others creates a vacuum. Without fostering opportunities for people to reach out and care for their brothers and sisters, the Christian singer believes that human beings “are actually being deprived of the opportunity to grow in virtue — as individuals, and as a society.”
Maher will be performing “Hold Us Together” live at “Restoring Love” this week. We‘ll leave you with the song’s complete lyrics:
It don’t have a job, don’t pay your bills
Won’t buy you a home in Beverly Hills
Won’t fix your life in five easy steps
Ain’t the law of the land or the government?
But it’s all you need
And love will hold us together
Make us a shelter to weather the storm
And I‘ll be my brother’s keeper
So the whole world would know that we’re not alone
It’s waiting for you knocking at your door
In the moment of truth when your heart hits the floor
And you’re on your knees
And love will hold us together
Make us a shelter to weather the storm
And I‘ll be my brother’s keeper
So the whole world would know that we’re not alone
This is the first day of the rest of your life
This is the first day of the rest of your life
‘Cause even in the dark you can still see the light
It’s gonna be alright, it’s gonna be alright
This is the first day of the rest of your life
This is the first day of the rest of your life
‘Cause even in the dark you can still see the light
It’s gonna be alright, it’s gonna be alright
Love will hold us together
Make us a shelter to weather the storm
And I‘ll be my brother’s keeper
So the whole world would know that we’re not alone

A while ago Glenn said one of the problems conservatives have, is in how we get our messages out, that the left is way ahead of us in such areas, and now when we start showing we can be creative too, the left’s throwing hissy fits.
Could it be because, other than their “creative delivery,” they have no worthwhile message?

Joy, bright spark of divinity,
Daughter of Elysium,
Fire-inspired we tread
Thy sanctuary.
Thy magic power re-unites
All that custom has divided,
All men become brothers
Under the sway of thy gentle wings.
Whoever has created
An abiding friendship,
Or has won
A true and loving wife,
All who can call at least one soul theirs,
Join in our song of praise;
But any who cannot must creep tearfully
Away from our circle.
All creatures drink of joy
At nature’s breast.
Just and unjust
Alike taste of her gift;
She gave us kisses and the fruit of the vine,
A tried friend to the end.
Even the worm can feel contentment,
And the cherub stands before God!
Gladly, like the heavenly bodies
Which He set on their courses
Through the splendor of the firmament;
Thus, brothers, you should run your race,
As a hero going to conquest.
You millions, I embrace you.
This kiss is for all the world!
Brothers, above the starry canopy
There must dwell a loving Father.
Do you fall in worship, you millions?
World, do you know your creator?
Seek him in the heavens;
Above the stars must He dwell.

Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love;
Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, opening to the sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away;
Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day!
All Thy works with joy surround Thee, earth and heaven reflect Thy rays,
Stars and angels sing around Thee, center of unbroken praise.
Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea,
Singing bird and flowing fountain call us to rejoice in Thee.
Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blessed,
Wellspring of the joy of living, ocean depth of happy rest!
Thou our Father, Christ our Brother, all who live in love are Thine;
Teach us how to love each other, lift us to the joy divine.
Mortals, join the happy chorus, which the morning stars began;
Father love is reigning o’er us, brother love binds man to man.
Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife,
Joyful music leads us Sunward in the triumph song of life.

Posted on July 24, 2012 at 8:05pmI’m of the opinion that contemporary Christian music can and should be more than it is. Having said that, something you guys forget- these were written at a time when the church was leading the culture. Somewhere along the way we stopped leading and started becoming irrelevant. If you think this song is bad, I think a lot of the hymns written since the 1920s are no better. BTW, rather ironic to think it’s actually some of the earlier church music which can be translated into various contemporary styles. Betcha I could make Ode to Joy into black gospel or bluegrass! :)

Well, I don’t wanna miss that. Here’s mine, and trust me, it’s not a group song – it’s solo:
IF YOU REALLY BELIEVE IN JESUS
We come to this building, week after week,
We act the faithful servant all humble and meek,
We walk down the aisle giving everyone a smile,
We comment on the weather and the health of our child.
We sit down by our neighbor and the gossip starts to pour,
We tell a few white lies and we laugh a little more.
We sing a song to Jesus, never thinking of the words,
The offering plate goes past us ’cause tithing’s for the birds.
The preacher tries to reach us as we yawn back in his face,
We shake our watch and wish the hands would quicken their pace,
As the last prayer is said, we bolt right for the door.
We’ve done our job for Jesus, we don’t owe Him any more.
From then until next Sunday, no one ever would know,
They don’t expect a Christian in the places we go,
In our heart we claim to have God’s precious Son,
Then we have the nerve to sit there, never telling anyone.
But if you really believe in Jesus, then you really believe it’s time

How you really believe in Jesus.

And He’s coming back!
You know that Heaven is a perfect place,
But just for those who accept God’s grace,
The lost don’t know which way to turn,
We‘ve got to share God’s love and help them learn,
We’ve got to tell everyone we know,
If we really believe it’s so….

The gov needs to get out of all social programs. The private sector has proven itself again and again that without gov interference they are more cost effective and and efficient than ANY GOVERNMENT AGENCY EVER.
Gov also takes away the personal connection that happens between people when they help each other and ARE helped. There is a sense of humility, responsibility, and love that is shared when people MAKE A POINT of helping one another.
A gov agency or employee GETTING PAID to help-does neither help or inspire a sense of responsibility—instead a sense of entitlement is fostered and that the financial assistance is from some faceless and heartless entity that prints money at will.
Instead of the hard earned money of neighbors and friends.

The Problem with Modern Praise
By Robert Winkler Burke
Book #6 of In That Day Teachings
12/13/09 http://www.inthatdayteachings.com
Of modern praise worship, what can you say?
It is like Jesus with Herod,
Modern praise is a long run-on sentence,
In search of a lost period!
It refuses to find the lost period,
Which is quite easily discoverable!
Because it is willfully overlooked,
To not know-what-spirit-they’re-of: enabled!
They don’t want to know,
What spirit they’re of,
‘Cause what spirit they’re,
Of: is not of above!
Modern praise refuses to find the lost period,
Because then the sentence would be over,
And if over, the sentence would be meaningless,
And if meaningless, they’ve had: wrong lover!
Modern praise refuses to fire the mercy-killing bullet,
And move on from the dead beast!
And find, with the death of pride, fear, greed & slouch imbuement,
Where life and God: is not least!
Through no fault of their own,
Modern praise is locked into death doctrine,
They’ve got talent: free them!
So they can be creative and God-locked-in!
I see creative praise,
In That Day!
No need for repeating,
A new way!
A new way to celebrate,
Report Post »Restoring ancient paths old,
Comes now creativity,
With periods manifold!

High and low voices,
Right spirits and minds,
And all God’s choices.
God will be free to create,
In indwelt minstrels again,
What he did once in David,
To bring heaven’s love to man!
Sing a new song,
But only after you’ve repented,
Of the garbage!
Of the wrong spirits you’ve repeated!
Stop the lost-period-shenanigans,
And move away from death!
Take this rebuke praise worshippers,
Thus your Lord Jesus saith!
Satan’s foul matrix of lies,
Is proved by endless mantra repeating,
Study In That Day Teachings,
Weep, repent and break thru to high reachings!
Yes, rapture church is matrix-imbued,
It’s praise weak, wispy and lost!
So is prosper-church and weakness church,
And where jabberwocky is tossed!
By their fruit ye shall know,
Now repent and get busy,
Where praise returns heart-felt,
And sane, there: I AM will be!
That is what is happening,

Posted on July 24, 2012 at 3:10pmVirgie Morgan,
Contrary to your knee-jerk opinion, as a critic of this musician, I am not a supporter of Obama.
I believe this musician represents a sampling of the dumbed-down condition of low mentality churchianity.
Honestly, this is not very complex work, and there is a reason it is not very complex work. This style of music has none of the richness of modern movie music. And this point is undeniable.
With In That Day Teachings, I am trying to pull a very low mentality up to a level wherein the Mind of Christ can occupy the mind of modern Christians.
But modern Christians are dumbed-down by the exact same processes that Glenn Beck describes when he talks about 100 years of progressive education.
Virgie Morgan, think on this: About 100 years of progressive education has dumbed down the church leadership! Most modern clerics have a standard public education, involving 100 years of progressivism, then they get a cleric’s collar, then they preach! (Dumbed-down!)
Praise musicians fall under the covering of their dumbed-down pastor, then they create mind-numbing 3-chord praise songs and play it in an endless loop of insanity.
If I dare point out the puerility of such insanity, am I wrong?
I see a day of higher consciousness, of self-aware praise artists who go beyond 3 chords!
But how do you get a dumbed-down sheeple to see their leaders have dumbed-themselves down?
The fruit is in the 3-chord, repeat songs!

Report Post »Our praise and our worship goes to God. That means as we sing, we must be able to focus our entire heart on God.
The more complex the song, the less you‘re focusing on God and the more you’re focusing on trying to sing the right note/word and the performance. And personal praise/worship should not be about performance.
The less complex the song, the more you can actually worship through the Holy Spirit’s leading.
God sees the heart – and the heart sees God through the easier, more singable songs that don’t require our focus.

So wake up, leaders of leaders,
Your time is short!
Worship God in spirit and truth,
Or you’ll abort!
Return to some orthodoxy,
Losing fear, greed and weakness emotion!
Your strength shall return! And courage!
Worshipping weakness has been your potion.
What is greed, but idiocy and death?
What is fear, but idiocy and death?
What is faux-intelligence, but idiocy and death?
What is weak-emotion, but idiocy and death?
What is prophetic jabberwocky, but idiocy and death?
What is idiocy and death, but idiocy and death?
Oh leaders of leaders,
You read In That Day writings in shock,
Who else loves you enough,
To: with love, punch out your broken clock?
You, like a stuck clock,
Right only: two times a day,
The charade: over,
In light: see truth’s right way!
Be intelligent, repent in truth,
Show sheep all shenanigan entrapments,
Weep, wail, howl! And God will forgive,
Make all spirit and truth enhancements!
You will discover your praise music,
Report Post »Will stop: hypnotic repetition,
Low voices will return, sans nasal-whine,
Full power songs, classic creation!
In That Day
Posted on July 24, 2012 at 1:43pmFull-powered stories and parables,
Will return!
Deeper mysteries from the Bible’s stories,
Will hearts burn!
I see this all, and more,
As a seer ahead of the leaders of leaders,
But who will have faith when,
Jesus returns, imbued, to rebuke sheep feeders?
In That Day,
Leaders of leaders think: they pay no price!
If they don’t,
Humble themselves, Christ’s body stays: on ice!
Weep, wail, howl,
In That Day!
Nothing else,
To say.
But that humble pie is now yours,
Free for the taking,
And orthodox soap to wash out,
Hell you’ve been making.
Humble pie,
Report Post »And orthodox soap,
In That Day,
Your last ditch hope.

Posted on July 24, 2012 at 3:57pmChristians – please ignore these off the wall one man ministries that are out there. They usually just want to tear others down.

Posted on July 24, 2012 at 9:47pmSounds to me like you are a very angry person because so many people enjoy “Another simplistic, puerile-chord song, sung with repetitious gusto”. In a world that is falling apart, sometimes us simple minded people like to hear a nice, simple and short meaningful tune.
Maybe you should follow a simple three word phrase: Smile… Be Happy.
