Gay Republican Group to Help Draft GOP 2012 Platform

The phenomenon of conservatives supporting gay rights, or conservatives being gay themselves, is hardly a new development. Former Vice President Dick Cheney has stated that he believes the matter to be purely a state-by-state issue, and that “freedom means freedom for everyone” while openly embracing his daughter Mary‘s homosexuality and even acting as father of the bride at said daughter’s wedding. In 2010, the gay conservative group GOProud earned plaudits from Ann Coulter and Andrew Breitbart. Glenn Beck himself has said gay marriage is not a threat to America:

“Do you believe gay marriage is a threat to the country in any way?” O’Reilly asked.

“A threat to the country? No, I don’t,” Beck said, laughing, adding mockingly, “Will the gays come and get us?”

Beck quoted Thomas Jefferson: “If it neither breaks my leg nor picks my pocket, what difference is it to me?”

Moreover, in more recent years, many conservatives – most of them coming from younger generations – have openly touted their willingness to accept gay marriage as an incipient reality in America. Witness this video by the Young Conservatives for Freedom to Marry:

So it should surprise very few people that the Republican National Committee has decided to take a good long listen to one of the few gay conservative groups in America while drafting its 2012 platform – namely, the Log Cabin Republicans. The Washington Blade reports:

R. Clarke Cooper, executive director of Log Cabin Republicans, said Tuesday a team from his organization will be credentialed to attend the platform committee meeting, which will take place the week of Aug. 20 in Tampa, Fla., prior to the start of the convention.

“Just looking at the 2008 document, Log Cabin has gone through and we’ve noted language in there that’s either directly unhelpful, or seen as anti-gay, and have marked it for deletion,” Cooper said. “We’ve also found language that could be strengthened to be more inclusive. That said, there’s going to be a completely new document. It’s not as if they’re taking the ’08 document and just updating it.”

Cooper said the group has already identified language in the 2008 platform that it will push to remove in the 2012 document, including language related to marriage. Under the heading “Preserving Traditional Marriage,” the 2008 platform endorses the Federal Marriage Amendment and affirms passing same-sex marriage bans through state initiatives.

Gary Howard, a spokesperson for the Republican National Committee, confirmed Log Cabin’s involvement in the platform process, but also said other organizations, including social conservative groups, will take part.

“As has been the practice in previous years, the Platform Committee Staff maintains an open door policy and welcomes input and suggestions from outside groups,” Howard said. “This year the staff has heard from hundreds of different groups as they presented their views on the Platform, this includes suggestions submitted by the public at-large at the gopplatform2012.com website. The Log Cabin Republicans reached out to the RNC to share their ideas as well. Additionally, the Platform Staff hosted meetings with dozens of social conservative groups to emphasize the importance of keeping the GOP’s commitment to traditional marriage.”[...]

At the Republican convention, Log Cabin is hosting four events throughout the week along with other LGBT groups: a welcome reception with the local Log Cabin on Aug. 26; an event for openly LGBT Republicans seeking political office with the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund on Aug. 27; a brunch for “Conservatives for the Freedom to Marry” with the organization Freedom to Marry on Aug. 29; and a closed press event honoring congressional Republican allies of the LGBT community on Aug. 30.

This move, especially coming as it does in the aftermath of the controversy over Chick-fil-A, is likely to have some socially conservatives observers worried. At the same time, there is no guarantee that any of the groups involved in this drafting process will get their agenda through to the platform. Moreover, based on the Log Cabin Republicans’ website, it does not appear that this group has a particularly radical set of commitments, relative to other, more liberal gay rights groups, such as the Human Rights Campaign.

It’s very clear most, what “ I ” have against homosexuals has to do with their “OPTIONAL” status, study after study finds homosexuality to be more a disease or malty than a real species diversification, it’s an insult to all those who really are different and have fought long and hard for the freedoms we have, giving gays the same access to resources set aside for those who genuinely need it is wrong, hetero couples are procreating in the natural manner God intended. Yes there is the smallest part of the straight segment who don‘t marry and don’t have children, but our society and it’s health are based on the majority. This one specific group has the capacity of eroding all freedoms in seeking more freedom to practice what nationally, if not globally is seen as A-moral by the largest percent of the population. There is the argument that if Homosexuality were a religion which it does not claim to be, it would be a different story, the basis of the argument is this “I deserve special classification and rights for each activity I choose to conduct.” The facts are America was founded as a Godly nation under Natures natural law, which in fact is God’s law, Glen has stated this. Under Gods natural law there is no benefit to any creature for the practice of homosexuality, the effect on society as a whole is negative when genders specifically stop adding their genetic code to the pool that makes society. Also most of us do NOT want to live in “A Brave New World” read th

It’s called knowing right from wrong. God gives us these rules and only He has the authority to say which is which. God says being gay an ‘abomination’. Liberals think that because you are black, gay, lesbian or Hispanic you have to be liberal. There are lots of gays, lesbians, blacks and Hispanics that truly have a brain and use it to defend freedom from Government, respect to each other, self reliance, and appreciate all the goods that America has offer to them and all those around the world that come here looking for freedom.

I can only speak for myself, but traditional marriage needs to be protected as an institution between a man and woman because that’s how I believe God intended AND because we need to hold fast to the values that made this country great. Homosexuality is an alternative lifestyle and the majority of us should not have to accept it as “normal” or encourage the behavior, just to make a few feel better about themselves .
As I think THETRUTHLIVES pointed out, civil unions are available for gays that gives them the same legal rights made by man. NO ONE but God can change what‘s written in the bible and I wouldn’t want to try to explain to Him why we tried.

You, like so many timid, weak-minded people in this country, are extremely gullible when a group you would normally disagree with vehemently offers you the opportunity to “go along to get along”. In other words, you’ll let them parade and foist their offensive, disgusting positions and views on you so long as they promise not to be too pushy or scary. In the meantime, what this really is is a “Trojan Horse” ploy by the radical homosexuals, which you’ve just happily admitted to accepting, designed to infiltrate the conservative movement and destroy it from within. The LCRs are not conservative by any stretch of the imagination as you would know if you looked at their platform carefully and this ploy has been in the radical gay movement’s “playbook” for some time. And they literally do have a “playbook” written by two Ivy League educated homosexuals who used their marketing expertise to develop a plan to “sell” this perversion to the American public. Wake up and smell the deception already!!

If I’m a man and like having sex with men… I can get married. If I’m a man and like having sex with peach cobbler… I can get married. And of course, if I’m a man and like having sex with women… I can’t get “married” to peach cobbler, because that isn’t marriage. See? Equal. I’m glad we got that resolved.

@encinom Your logic is insane you’ve stated,

“There is no debating with religious fanatics and conservative zealots, just point and laugh as you kind die out.”
If in fact homosexuality were not a choice, homosexuals would be an endangered species, and no matter how they tried scientists would not be able to make them procreate together in large enough quantities to not prohibit the extinction of the species.

To be gay is to hate all that made it possible for life to exist, as such the only species ( and I use that term loosely) to die out is that of the Homosexual.

Society would be better off to figure out the environmental toxin be it natural or in the food or water that is damaging so many perfectly good brains, it’s causing the elimination of long developed survival traits that allowed the human species to survive many apocalypses. If kaos ensues as historically it does, do you really think the petri wielding scientists are going to cease saving their own lives to make sure gays have progeny? If or more so when the gates narrow, homosexuality will be shown for the massive waste of time and resources it really is.

Did he make any promises to the tea party? Did he say ANYTHING that resembled a tea party? Mitt Romney was the farthest from the tea party of all the candidates…But you let him sail through as a moderate

Now we are in the general election and you cant even make him choose a conservative VP, EVEN THOUGH IT IS A NO-BRAINER. As we saw the last couple days, you cant even get his surrogates to say conservative things

DIVINEPROVIDENCE1776, I agree. I hate it when people do this. It is like saying all black people are like the Black Panthers, or all people from the south are toothless and ignorant, or all Christians hate the gay community, it just isn’t so. I don’t like or appreciate some of the comments on here. This is what the progressives want, they want to divide us at every turn. To weaken us, and to make us fail. First of all I believe that as long as no one breaks the law and harms anyone else then it should be no ones business.I personally to not support gay marriage but I leave the judgement up to my God. If we believe that God is a loving and forgiving God and loves his children then who are we to argue with that? Jesus died on the cross for our sins did he not? Has anyone here led a perfect life without sin? So those of you here that continue to have these thoughts of hate and claim to be Christians I must ask you….Do you think God would want you to behave like this? To hate and be judgemental? Do you assume that you have the power or the authority to be the judge? Just curious. Maybe instead of speaking out so violently you should think about what you are doing in the name of God.I am not asking you to agree with it but surely you can not live with such hatred in your hearts .

HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN the enormous rise in DJIA since OBAMA CAME TO POWER? From 8000 at the end of the cheney/bush reign of error to over 13000 now: historic creation of wealth for Americans who own stocks, funds, 401k, annuities and pensions? Never before under any prez such a dramatic rise in wealth for the private sector. REMEMBER WHEN CLINTON LEFT DJIA about 11000, when bush left 8000—huge depletion of assets for America and its corporations.————–IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR CHILDREN AND YOUR MONEY, you’ll stick with Obama and VOTE DEMOCRAT THIS NOVEMBER. You cannot take words and give them deviant meaning. I don’t know any African/Americans, Mexican/Americans, etc. I only know Americans. I refuse to play the word/victim game. I don’t have a clue what “gay rights” are. We all have the same rights under the constitution, yet homosexuals want to have “special rights” granted to them, as in forcing everyone to accept their deviant behavior as normal. I will not comply. I wll be good to you as I would any other person, but will not ever accept your chosen behavior as normal. I will not sit in a “sensitivity class”.
