Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. Calls on President to Raise National Minimum Wage to $10

Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-Ill.) is calling on President Obama to keep his 2008 campaign promise to “stand behind” legislation that would raise the minimum wage from $7.25 to $10 per hour, reports The Daily Caller’s Nicholas Ballasy.

“In 2011, he wanted to see the minimum wage raised to $9.50. It is now 2012,” Rep. Jackson said as he announced his Catching Up to 1968 Act of 2012 bill Wednesday outside of the Capitol building.

“I’m calling on President Barack Obama to honor his campaign commitment of 2008 to stand behind legislation that raises the minimum wage for the American people a little more than he requested in 2008 because the numbers and the economy reflect that $10 is not an unreasonable starting point,” the Democrat state representative added.

Watch Rep. Jackson’s remarks (via The Daily Caller):

Standing with Rep. Jackson is former presidential candidate Ralph Nader (remember him?) who backs the measure because, he argues, it will spur the U.S. economy.

“Even by raising the minimum wage to $10 per hour, it would still remain below the minimum wage in today’s dollars in 1968,” said Nader.

Even Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich got in on the act, claiming that Rep. Jackson’s bill could be the president key to reelection.

“I’m here to say that President Obama could guarantee his election if he came out in favor of Jesse Jackson’s proposal — that President Obama could instill confidence again in the hearts of millions of Americans who are wondering, ‘Is this government really there for them or is it just there for Wall Street?’ This is an important moment,” he said.

But are they on the right track? That is, will raising the national minimum wage actually help the American people and the U.S. economy? Famed free market economist and 1976 Nobel laureate Milton Friedman would say “no”:

A raise in the minimum wage, would wipe-out a majority of the small businesses that are left. It would cause them to lay-off all their employees, and that would add to the unemployment and food stamp rolls.

And that would only leave large corporations like Walmart, and they would just raise the cost of everything in their stores, to cover the increase in minimum wage…..

Food stamps and other means tested forms of federal aid are only business subsidies so people will take jobs that would otherwise go unfilled at the present wage rates.

What a dreamer! Here in Oklahoma unemployment is 6% and 3.5% in my county. Everyone starts off at $8.50 an hr. – no takers. Home Depot, Solo Cup Co and Wal-mart have permanent signs up and can’t hire help. My sons start construction workers out at $10 an hr. & can’t keep help. Young kids come for job interview after getting a certificate from our local Vo-Tech and will tell you they can run anything – but won’t start for less than $21.00 and will not get off to run a shovel by hand. They really can’t run some of the equipment and who wants to trust a 20 year old with a $50 grand backhoe. The only way this would work is to stop unemployment. Most folks get extended unemployment and get more than $10 an hr. to sit at home and babysit their own kids, or go fishing or get a cash paying job and get rich.

Agreed. The mandatory minimum wage will just make the job givers milk as much as posible with fewer resources (i.e., you and me). I’m all for the concept of the living wage, but that can be done through individuals using their feet, and yes, organized labor (for large businesses/corporations) in the private sector (note, I said private and not publich which I’m 100% against public sector jobs having unions) where that makes sense. I’m a Conservative, but private sector labor unions have their place. Small business can then compete for labor and folk will choose to or not too work based on their own individual needs. Businesses can also hire less capable workers and as they become more proficient, pay them more for that labor. The minimum wage only hurt the untrained workers; the poorest of the poor. The problem with the governments continued involvement with wages is that they assume folk don’t have free will. Folk will make choices for their own benifits and that’s the check that will keep folks from being abused. Not too many folk will continue to work for a company that doesn’t provide a living wage. The minimum wage never was a living wage anyway, and it becomes the excuse for businesses to raise their own price for products and for other consumables which leads inevitably to inflation. That’s why a Burger King Whopper, which cost $1 in 1991, now is nearly $4. Doesn’t make any sense. Of course the FED printing money is part of that, but not all. ‘Nough sa

      Sorry what?

Food stamps and means tested programs are designed to allow people to turn down low wage jobs and sit on their butts instead.

The reason we have out of control out of wedlock births is because of hand-outs. The reason all our jobs go to other countries is that the cost of doing business in this country is too expensive.

The reason we need illegal aliens in this country is because as Vicente Fox said, “There is no doubt that Mexicans, filled with dignity, willingness and ability to work are doing jobs that not even blacks want to do there in the United States.” Despite his impolitic generalization, he is largely correct.

Why work your butt off in a field all day when you can make $10/hr in an air conditioned fast food store or just collect govt handouts.

@Marybethuneducated I didn‘t say that you can’t get qualified workers here in Oklahoma for $21.00 an Hr. There are many looking for work as I type. The problem that you didn’t catch was kids right out of the Vo-Tech expecting my sons to hire them with new certificate in hand and start out with people that have been there several years for same wage. My sons tried one of these idiots for $17.00 an hour and the repair bill on the Case backhoe was over $5,000.00 that he tore up. As for Insurence Co’s cutting off my benefits they just might as well have done so and I have good Union insurence. My Dr. at age 55 retired – said it wasn’t worth it. My new Dr. takes 2 months to see. My kids taught me that for all minor stuff, go to Emergency One. The most I have had to wait was 1/2 Hr. – They don’t take any thing but private insurence or cash – no Medicare or Medicade – they send them to the hospital emergency room.

When i was younger, i used to complain about minimum wage being too low, and was always for the raising of it. I felt that way until i started understanding economics, and that everything is tied together.

I don’t understand why that basic principle is not taught in schools. Raising minimum wage does nothing for an individual except make one feel better telling others how much they make. When minimum wage is raised prices of products go up (or lay offs happen) so in the end you are still in the same financial situation. You can still only buy things you could buy before.

Obviously a lot more happens than that (nothing good though) but companies will have to find a way to compensate for the extra money they have to shell out to produce their products, and that can be done in many ways….

Lets’ start by lowering congressional pay to 7.25 an hour. 1/2 hour for for lunch and no more than 50 hours a week.

What a genius idea for creating more jobs . . . raise the minimum wage so many will receive no wage at all and be able to get unemployment . . . perhaps for life.

That will really help the unemployment numbers….go up. It is hard to understand how they think this will help. In fact, maybe they should just raise it to $25 or even $100 an hour! Think of how great that will be! All those entry level jobs where they will now get a ‘fair’ wage…. “Thank you for your order, that will be $510…. please proceed to the first window.”

Why not make everyone wealthy and raise the minimum wage to $100 per hour? Yea! Taht’ll do it. We’ll all be in the 1%! Sarcasm aside, these “community” leaders are so freekin’ stupid (Sharpton, Jackson, Corrine Brown, Maxine Waters, Barbara Lee on and on) I doubt they could find their own butts in the dark with a flashlight.

How many more small businesses will this kill. . .trying to force companies to pay moeny they don’t have will definitely close many more small businesses. . .this is nothing more than trying to buy votes with more “Obama” money. . .and more proof that the Dems could care less about small businesses.

Goes to show that even stupid people can find people that agree with him. Raising the min wage is actually a job killer, the extra $2.50 per hour can easily be made up by someone working a 2nd job. I’ve done it, others do it. But these stupid people that have never worked a day in their lives believe that “$10 is good place to start”….what f’in planet did he grow up on?? Oh yeh, the Jackson planet. POS++++
