‘Let’s Talk About The President Doing Blow’: Rep. West Pushes Back on Town Hall Question

When a few attendees at a Florida town hall meeting tried to rattle Rep. Allen West (R-FL) with questions about his service in the U.S. Army, the congressman brushed it off and suggested they also go back and talk about the time President Obama snorted benzoylmethylecgonine (i.e. “cocaine” or “blow”).
“If you guys want to go back and talk about what happened nine years ago to me, let’s talk about the president doing blow,” Rep. West said.
The attendees questioned Rep. West about an Article 15 hearing he was involved in as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army.
For those of you unfamiliar with the term “Article 15,” it’s defined as follows:
Nonjudicial punishment (NJP) refers to certain limited punishments which can be awarded for minor disciplinary offenses by a commanding officer or officer in charge to members of his/her command.
[…]
Article 15, of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, (UCMJ), and Part V of the Manual for Courts-Martial, constitute the basic law concerning nonjudicial punishment procedures. The legal protection afforded an individual subject to NJP proceedings is more complete than is the case for nonpunitive measures, but, by design, is less extensive than for courts-martial.
But why would they ask Rep. West about an Article 15 hearing? They asked because they were bringing up a controversial incident the congressman was involved in when he served in Iraq, Townhall’s Katie Pavlich explains. Here’s the story as reported by Deborah Sontag of the New York Times:
Intent on foiling a reported plot to ambush him and his men, Colonel West, a battalion commander, made a calculated decision to intimidate the Iraqi officer with a show of force. An interrogation under way was going nowhere, Colonel West said in an interview, and he chose to take the matter into his own hands.
”This could get ugly,” he told his soldiers. But, he said, he imposed limits: ”This man will not be injured and he will not have to be repaired. There will be no blood and no breakage of bones.”
Still, Colonel West wanted the Iraqi policeman, Yehiya Kadoori Hamoodi, to think ”this was going to be the end” if he did not divulge what he knew. So Colonel West presided over what he considered a time-sensitive interrogation that grew steadily more abusive until he himself fired a pistol beside Mr. Hamoodi’s head.
Rep. West was fined for the incident but retired with full benefits and honors. And he’s never been apologetic about it, saying he would do it all over again.
“If you guys have a problem with the fact that people were out there planning to kill my soldiers and I found a guy and I put a pistol, you know, and shot over his head,” Rep. West said, “… if you guys have a problem with that, then you need to go talk to someone else because if I’m in that exact same situation, I’m making the same decision.”

In any case West violated the Military Code of Honor and the Geneva Convention in this witnessed event, one that ended his military career. One of his subordinates sent word of his actions up the chain and his actions were verified by others. So everybody made nice. He got an honorable discharge, and the military got rid of him.

Posted on May 30, 2012 at 1:57pmI take no issue with Mr. West, in his decisions on the battle field, protection of the troops or his history in Congress. It is easy to sit back in your arm chair and make non informed comments when you have never been in his shoes. Typical of most people, make snap judgments when you have no real information to go on. I would follow this man in battle or support him for any position in office.

Posted on May 30, 2012 at 6:41pmWest voted for those because military funding was attached to everyone of those bills. Being a military guy he’s not about to allow soldiers in the field go without while Progressive Socialist play politics with the lives of service men.
When the conservatives threatened not to extend the raising of the budget with more loans. King Hussein and the MSM media accused them of pushing grandma over the cliff. When the progressives threatened to cut military funding unless these bills were passed no one in the MSM cared how many soldiers would die for lack of supplies? West made the decision not to play politics and make sure the soldiers had proper supplies.
Our job as citizens, if we don’t like the bill put people in place to remove it from the books. Everything that has happened to the American people is the fault of people who do nothing but sit on their rearends and wait for someone else to handle it. Get off your couch in November and take someone to vote who believes as you believe. Two votes make a bigger difference than one, let’s double up in November.

Posted on May 30, 2012 at 7:30pmThis apparently hit quiet a nerve between us. I like Allen West personally, I believe he’s on the right side on many many things and he really knows how to sting left wing progressives. I personally never would have brought up the NDAA thing against him, but it was brought up.
Report Post »From my perspective, people lost there focus and went to defend someone they like, about something i believe he was clearly wrong about.
I have no clue of Ausername’s political affiliation, but the point he brought up is truthful and one that’s bothered me a lot. I didnt want to see West go down the path of big governent and anti-civil rights, but he did on this one and hasnt given any indication he feels it was a mistake that im aware of. So until he does I cannot trust him when it comes to protecting the constitution.
If you think West was right on the NDAA, then you must think Jim DeMint was wrong in standing against it.
I dont think the military should be able to come to your house in the middle of the night, lock you up for the rest of you life and never have to charge you with any crime or have any evidence against you. Many on here seem to and West supported this too when he voted for the NDAA.
Will it ever be enforced? maybe not, but thats besides the point, that one bill invalidated half of the bill of rights. Im sorry no matter how much you like West he was simply wrong on this issue and defending it because you like the guy(i do myself on most things)just makes you look inconsistant

Posted on May 30, 2012 at 1:05pmAccepting an Article 15 essentially makes one’s commander the judge and jury. It is a choice of forum. A commander offers an Article 15 to the service member. The service member can accept it or reject it. If he rejects it the commander then determines whether to send the service member to a court-martial. Commanders should never offer an Article 15 unless they are prepared to take the charges to a court-martial.

Although, back in my day, anytime you screwed up just a little on BCT the DI would ask you, you want an Article 15? Once, I told the DI, yea go ahead give me one. He took me in front of the CO and I told him what happened and that I would refuse the Article 15 and wanted a courts martial. The CO decided it wasn’t worth the time or energy. I never did have any disciplinary action adjudicated against me…but maybe that is why I got orders for Vietnam?

Posted on May 30, 2012 at 1:47pmNice try, but that doesn’t mean anything. Attorneys give up their law licenses all the time for one reason or another. Many law professors give up their licenses because they no longer need them as they are no longer practicing law.
