No More Big Gulps: New York City to Ban Sale of Large Sodas & Sugared Drinks

New York City’s micromanaging of how much sugar its residents can consume has become practically a national scandal from the perspective of people with an interest in averting bureaucratic paternalism. And now the city is going to take yet one more step in its crusade against sweetness of all kinds. The New York Times reports:

New York City plans to enact a far-reaching ban on the sale of large sodas and other sugary drinks at restaurants, movie theaters and street carts, in the most ambitious effort yet by the Bloomberg administration to combat rising obesity.

The proposed ban would affect virtually the entire menu of popular sugary drinks found in delis, fast-food franchises and even sports arenas, from energy drinks to pre-sweetened iced teas. The sale of any cup or bottle of sweetened drink larger than 16 fluid ounces — about the size of a medium coffee, and smaller than a common soda bottle — would be prohibited under the first-in-the-nation plan, which could take effect as soon as next March.

The measure would not apply to diet sodas, fruit juices, dairy-based drinks like milkshakes, or alcoholic beverages; it would not extend to beverages sold in grocery or convenience stores.

“Obesity is a nationwide problem, and all over the United States, public health officials are wringing their hands saying, ‘Oh, this is terrible,’ ” Mr. Bloomberg said in an interview on Wednesday in the Governor’s Room at City Hall.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to Ban Sale of Large Soft Drinks

Michael Bloomberg

“New York City is not about wringing your hands; it’s about doing something,” he said. “I think that’s what the public wants the mayor to do.”

Really? The public wants the mayor to do this? Bloomberg really believes the following picture represents one of the biggest threats to public health?

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to Ban Sale of Large Soft DrinksAnd what would this new “ban” require? The Times lays it out:

The ban would not apply to drinks with fewer than 25 calories per 8-ounce serving, like zero-calorie Vitamin Waters and unsweetened iced teas, as well as diet sodas.

Restaurants, delis, movie theater and ballpark concessions would be affected, because they are regulated by the health department. Carts on sidewalks and in Central Park would also be included, but not vending machines or newsstands that serve only a smattering of fresh food items.

At fast-food chains, where sodas are often dispersed at self-serve fountains, restaurants would be required to hand out cup sizes of 16 ounces or less, regardless of whether a customer opts for a diet drink. But free refills — and additional drink purchases — would be allowed.

Corner stores and bodegas would be affected if they are defined by the city as “food service establishments.” Those stores can most easily be identified by the health department letter grades they are required to display in their windows.

Bloomberg’s decision to micromanage things this deeply might seem funny, but it also evinces a serious refusal to learn from history. This isn’t the first time that governments have tried to limit what people can drink, or crack down on a highly addictive substance that has a large amount of people supplying it. How did that turn out the last time we tried it, again?

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to Ban Sale of Large Soft DrinksMaybe Bloomberg should invest in some history lessons on Carrie Nation, another busybody progressive.

“More than 3.4 million New Yorkers — with combined annual earnings of $119 billion — pulled up stakes and left for other states from 2000 through 2009, according to the Tax Foundation.” (NY Post, 5/30/2012)

While I’m sure taxes are the primary cause for the migration, Bloomberg’s Nanny-State-On-Steroids approach to governance doubtless plays a role as well.

The people of New York specifically voted to only allow two terms for their mayor. When Bloomberg decided he deserved a third term and did every underhanded thing necessary to override that two term mandate, the people allowed it to happen. Even at that, the people had a choice to totally reject him in the election. Instead, they voted for him. Stupid is as stupid does.

To those who agree with the ban, do they realize that they are agreeing to allow bureaucratic government to think for them? ‘Oh not for me,’ they say. I say to them, ‘You are a fool!’

Further to those who agree with the proposed ban because this may save lives, I ask why you aren’t proposing banning cars? Don’t they kill 40,000 people a year? Not a peep, eh?

Progressives and liberals that live in the city always vote for “progressive liberals”. I find it interesting that the liberal voter is against:
      1) Pollution
      2) Oil
      3) Smoking
      4) Noise pollution
      5) Destroying the environment
      6) Guns
      7) Slavery

However, in cities they continue to vote these dopes over and over and get exactly what they hate: Pollution, noise, heavy use of oil/electricity and resources, through the roof crime, murder, destruction of the environment, smoking, etc.

What’s that saying again? When you do something over and over again expecting a different outcome… they call that delusional/crazy or something like that.

Is he going to follow Britain’s example and take obese kids away from their parents?
Will he put the fat kids in some kind of boot camp while reeducating their parents?

Someone else posted this quote from C.S. Lewis a while back and it nails the sentiment.

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

What’s amazing is that everyone is up in arms about a ban on what is quite simply an addictive poisonous drug – sugar and saccharin both, but have no problem paying the health insurance bills of the morbidly obese and unhealthy weebles that are sucking the life out everyone else, one big gulp at a time.
While I am not for a government sponsored anything, I do think that health insurers should have prescription to pro-rate their premiums based on factors such as weight and vice. It’s ridiculous that there is an across the board rate for corporate supplied health care, when half the insured pool are one cheeseburger away from a several hundred thousand dollar heart or cancer procedure.
My goal in all of this isn’t to profit the insurance companies, but to increase the liability on the slugs the subsist on artificial crap and a couch. No liability means drinking a 64oz big gulp for breakfast, lunch and dinner. No liability means enabling the action.

@CHEYBEES Yes sugar is bad for you..but so is the carbolic acid in the sodas..it dissolves bones.. They could be using sweeteners that are good for you..they could leave out the carbolic acid and use citric acid..and what about the trans fats that Glenn loves so much…It has no taste..but it causes as much arterial and heart damage if not more that cholesteral laden foods..It would seem to me that the food and beverage industry should hold some responsibility for the health of the people..Most never read food label ingredients. and most junk food is just that..it does not have to be that way..It would seem more reasonable to approach health related issues at the source..the manufacturers..not the size of items and denying bulk buys..It does not at all address any health issues..it is control..that is all…

Why 16 ounces? Can you buy two of them to get 32 ounces and then pour them into your own cup? Would you be arrested? Why are drinks in restaurants exempt? Isn’t sitting down to drink a soda at a restaurant versus burning the calories to get your own soda even worse? Why are milkshakes exempt but not flavored coffees? What about Pepsi Next, it has sugar, but not as much – so, can you get a 32 ounce Pepsi Next, 16 ounce Pepsi, 48 ounce Coke Zero, and so on? Will the Police Officers who have to enforce this be outlawed from eating donuts? At least you DON’T have to have a photo ID – lol

When people are feeling uneasy they used to have a smoke take away the smokes they will eat the epidemic of obesity was created by the smoking bans soon they will be attacking chocolates that is another fallback for many people but I guess it’s ok to ban these items so everyone could just dumb down and start using cocaine, pot, crack or meth as it has a higher revenue generating potential.

They are hand-picked Bloomberg clones who love this kind of mindless Nanny State intrusion into our daily lives. This news comes on the heels of the report showing a mass exodus from NY state and NYC. Taxes and regulations are driving people to greener pastures. The states of Florida, Tennessee, North and South Carolina and Texas are where these people are headed. The beauty of the states is they have different rules and tax structures. This is why ObamaCare, or any Federal regulation, is so pernicious. Now you can vote with your feet and move. Once things become federeal, there is no way out.

While I disagree with this policy, there’s a simple solution! Call me crazy, but instead of getting a 32oz cup and filling it with 30oz of ice so that you can enjoy a watered-down drop of soda, get the smaller cup and, bare with me, fill it with actual soda! I know, I know, it’s crazy but not only is the soda already cold and needs no ice, but it will also taste like soda instead of the flat teaspoon of watered-down s### that most people struggle to suck out of their mountain of ice.

I used to think this was all about the establishment attempting to save money by selling cups that were basically nothing but ice cubes, but people actually do this on their own when filling their own cups EVERY TIME! It’s one of those things that as long as I live I will never accept.

Funny how the Beck shepple will curse out Alex Jones and call him a nut, but bow to the Beckster and the other pseudo conservative hosts. I started seeing the connection a long time ago and was told I was nuts. Like many of the pseudo conservatives that post here, if someone else says it, they are nuts — if Beck says it with a spin, it is 100% truth.

      THX

I’d hate to break it to ya bud, but how many of Alex Jones’ conspiracies have been proven fact? Zero. Oh, because that’s all part of the conspiracy as well…misinformation, disinformation, direction, re-direction…you’ve woken up to THAT?

Jones makes a living off this stuff. He‘s nothing more than an entertainer who’s too cowardly to note a disclaimer…He’d be out of business. Even Beck has noted to never take his word, but do your own homework…Ever hear that from Jonesey? Nah, didn’t think so.

Conspiracies have no answers, only more questions. Followers of Jones are as bad as a cult, If they are disproven, they cover their ears and call it part of the conspiracy. I’d call that pretty nutty.

So rather than live your life to the fullest, continue on living in fear there in Jonestown, where the kool-aid always comes with a kick.

      lol.

Where is the conclusive evidence that it is a false report?

For every expert that says it was legit, I can find an expert that says it was an inside job.

I do not believe that it was a inside job, although our “government” has created false flags in the past
under the ideology that the ends justify the means.

This guy simply will not stop amazing me. I rarely drink soda myself, but occasionally will enjoy some. Its my choice. I stopped adding salt to any food some 25 years ago if not longer. It’s my choice. I’ve never smoked, in fact I am allergic to something in it. I guess that I could go on with my personal does and don’t, but the point is that I feel that it should be my free will just as the choices should be the free will of all others to make their own choices. If Bloomberg remains in office much longer I really do wonder what he will “order” his minions to do or not do next? I‘m surprised so far that the people of the city have not risen and over run the mayor’s office by now.

Most of the foods I consume(eat, for those in reolinda) have enough salt in them whenst made. I might add a pinch to fries…but that’s it. If too much, I re-order something else. Fresh(refrigerated) ground pepper is a great replacement for salt on egg-dishes. Garlic is a great addition to mashed potatoes instead of butter, although, fried eggs are a must in teflon, with a smaller ammount of butter for flavor.

So let me get this straight, no one can buy a Big Gulp but can buy two large drinks instead. Hmmmm. What are the environmentalists going to say with all of those extra cups clogging up the landfills? Dumba$$! The bureaucrats will never successfully regulate human behavior. If I want to drink myself into a sugar comma I will find a way. Get out of our business. If people want to kill themselves off by drowning their sorrows in sugar I say let them. Natural selection will take them out of the picture in short order and we will be done with it.

Not content with the current cost of living in New York, Mayor Bloomberg has been enacting several harsh measures to price all the “undesirables” out of NYC, so only he and his billionaire buddies can afford to live there.

On top of property values being sky high, Bloomberg also wants the cost of food and drink to skyrocket. What’s next, a tax on air?

People always find ways around these things. Some will start carrying individual packets of sugar to spike their drinks. Unless NYC enacts laws to prohibit the sale of such on the streets, sidewalk vendors will sell such or small liquid bottles of sweetener designed for spiking drinks. People will start to buy in grocery stores six packs and liter bottles of their favorite drinks, plastic cups and get ice from a sidewalk vendor etc, etc. etc. The city that needs tax dollars to fund all their socialist programs and bloated government will probably start complaining to the public about how it needs to raise taxes to make up for the loss it has caused by prohibiting the sale of ‘sugary’ drinks. So New Yorkers get ready to reach further into your pockets and purses for your wonderful government officials looking out for your best interests.
