Student Suspended for Wiping His Hands on American Flag…But His Family Says It‘s Because He’s Black

Virginia Beach Student Moses Hinton Suspended for Wiping His Hands on American Flag

AP

A 13-year-old Virginia Beach, Va. boy received an in-school suspension after a teacher reported he wiped his hands on an American flag, WKTR-TV reported.

Moses Hinton’s family, however, claims he was unfairly targeted because he’s black.

“A teacher observed a student who recently returned from the restroom using the American flag as a hand towel. The student indicated to the teacher that there were no paper towels in the restroom,” Plaza Middle School spokeswoman Eileen Cox told WAVY-TV.

But the family’s attorney, Wayne Scriven, said that’s not what happened. He told the station he asked the student, “Did you wash your hands when you went to the restroom? He said I did. He said there weren’t any paper towels, so I dried them on my pants before I started walking back.”

His mother, Victoria Hinton, said her son told her what happened next: “Mommy, I was coming up the stairs and I lost my balance and I touched the flag.”

Hinton told WAVY the flag didn’t fall over or sustain any damage. She said her son is the only black student in his 7th grade honors class and believes he was singled out.

“[This has been] very traumatic,” Hinton told WKTR.  “It has had an emotional impact on my son’s education.”

She said she believes officials overreacted: “Why didn’t you just take him aside and first ask him, ‘Hey, is everything okay?’ and then proceed by saying, ‘well, you know, the American Flag is something we respect and we hold very high in our country, so you know, just keep that in mind.’”

School officials are standing by their punishment, saying Hinton “was disciplined in accordance with the Code of Student Conduct.”

This is all a plot planned at the monthly white people meeting because the whole Trayvon plot didn’t work out. We’re all in on it, but this kid‘s ’Mommy” and her lawyer are on to us. Between them and Sharpton, we don’t stand a chance.

Expelled? Heck, let’s cut off his hands! That will teach him. If that’s not enough, perhaps we can place a bullet in his head? I guarantee he won’t do it again that way. I mean, geesh, he’s 13 years old — he should not only know better, but he should be treated as an adult and convicted of treason. Let’s not waste money on trying him or finding out anything about him. That takes too much time. Let’s just chop off his head. Teach all those 13 years old a lesson that way so they don’t do it again.

Sheesh! you and people like you are despicable intolerant ********. The kid is 13 years old. He may well not be old enough to truly understand patriotism… especially if his parents never taught him anything remotely like that. There comes a point in kids’ lives where they must accept that responsibility, but 13? I don’t think so. He certainly should be punished but expelling him is ridiculous. How anyone would advocate kicking a 13 year old out of school for this incident and possible destroy their lives if they have no other school to attend is just ludicrous. I’d have to live in the world that you apparently advocate! Perhaps you’d feel more at home living in Iran.

It was about respect for property and respect for the flag.

      You obviously speak without knowledge.
The poster stated expulsion, not suspension. There is a world of difference.
If the poster meant suspension, he should have stated such as one only responds
on what is written. Expulsion is far too harsh for a single incident such as
this and, from the story, there is no mention that this was more than a single
      incident.

Now, whatever you mean by “stupid liberal comments”, please enlighten me with
these alleged “stupid liberal comments”. If you mean treating other as I would
want them to treat me, i.e. ‘the Golden Rule’, then I stand by those, but don’t
      find them a bit liberal.

I’m saying not all 13 year old kids truly understand patriotism. While
they may generally understand it, the true implications of what that flag
means very possibly are not inside this child’s mind like they are yours
      or mine.

I don’t have a problem with punishment, Maji. I think punishment is needed
at times, and this would be one time. However, removing a child permenantly
from this school is far too harsh for what he did. A 1 or 3 day suspension
would be fine, inschool suspension would be fine, and either should probably
be coupled with having to write an essay on what patriotism means to people.

I believe in teaching, not beating information into someone.

Why is this the school’s responsibility? How about you so-called parents instil some discipline and knowledge into you kids brain on your own, or do you condone this type of ignorant behavior? You must be so proud. And typically, they have to immediately play the race card. This kid is going to grow up playing the victim/ race card just like mommy and daddy have done for too long.

Oh yes, this is all a racist plot by the evil white Americans. No doubt the teacher took the evil flag & thrust it at the poor student who put his hands up to deflect the flag from touching him. Evil, EVIL!!

By the way, for official record, there is no such thing as reverse discrimination. That is why http://www.blackpeoplemeet.com is perfectly fine, but http://www.whitepeoplemeet.com is racist.

As for the flag, it has withstood much more than a pair of dirty hands. I would have told the kid not to do that again and then spend some time with the class to educate the students on the flag, what it represents, and that they all owe their freedom to those that fought and died in defense of that freedom. God Bless America!

WHY don‘t you don’t get it!?? IT’S WHAT OUR AMERICAN FLAG REPRESENTS!!! It has never been the “material” that we honor….but it’s what that flag represents that we ALL should hold in the highest honor, AND by doing that WE ALL need to be respectful of taking care of it, out of respect for the memory of all the fallen American heroes (aka…the human beings who fought bravely for freedom)!!! When you see “that flag” your seeing the symbol for the heart and soul of our country!

That being said….it angers me that this punk wipes his hands on it after he gets out of the bathroom…..who does that? He was 13 years old not 4 years old….no one should defend his actions!!!! He KNEW BETTER, but wanted to be an ungrateful brat anyways! He was NOT permanently expelled from the school…just given a temporary suspension (that’s usually 3-5 days). If I was the principal (after he got back from his suspension) I would have made him come in from his lunch breaks and sit in my office while I showed him all the examples I could (for however many days it would take) all the sacrifices for freedom our fellow Americans have done for him….maybe then it would stick in his head that respecting the flag is to respect their memory!!!

Most Black Americans are not stupid, they know that they got a much better deal form God, than they will ever get from Obama. Besides a Christian can never Love God and Support Obama! It’s going to be very interesting to see how this next election turns out. This boy is in an HONORS class, which should say something first of all. Next, what is his record of behavior like? Has he ever shown disrespect for the flag or America in the past? If so, then let the consequence fit the crime. But until everything is out there about him, we need to be careful not to be guilty of the same nonsense we are seeing on the liberal side! Why does the “mommy I lost my balance” story just smell like a BS story a kid tells when he gets caught?

And his parents are supporting it. A future criminal in the making.

      Bingo.

Used to be a time when these types of parents would be called out by everybody and shamed. Now, they’re embraced because people are scared of their own shadows these days.

I love how in the media clip the cowards introduce this as a kid “touched” the flag.

The teacher reported he used it as a hand towel.

A pretty big difference if you ask me.

      Lying soulless news station.

I’m sick to death of blacks using the “it‘s because he’s black” excuse. If the kid wiped his hands off on the flag; he got the appropriate punishment. A good set of parents would’ve then explained to their kid about respect for our flag, & what is & isn’t appropriate. Incident over & done. Now we’ll have all the race-baiters up in arms about a black kid getting an unfair rap. Time for some self induced responsibility…did you do it? Why would the teacher lie? Take your punishment like a man…I‘ve always disliked parents who can’t admit their little darling might’ve done something wrong…

Parents of the ‘black’ hand washer. Be glad he washes hands. Also when he is a bit older, he will be wiping his hand on your faces from the respect you have taught him. He is headed for a Trevon Martin fall. The rhetoric killed Trevon Martin. Know there are many people who will stand their ground. The flag is symbolic, but armed people are armed people and they are not just symbolic but living, breathing bags of hurt that will come upon those who are wiping something on them, personally who can and will wipe back.

That is a tid bit of an over reaction..I mean he’s 13 years old. If I saw him do that I would pull him aside and tell him that “you DON’T do that to the flag” and send him on his merry way back to class! The so-called “family attorney” wouldn’t be involved! This is ridiculous!

Not sure which is more disturbing; the fact that a 13 year old would intentionally perform such an act of disrespect, or that a 13 year old might not even realize that using Old Glory to wipe your hands is disrespectful.

I doesn’t matter why he did it. He needs to be punished to learn his lesson.

His mom needs to be beat in public for:
      1) disgracing black people everywhere
      2) defending her kid instead of letting him learn his lesson
      3) calling an attorney

I remember telling my dad, respectfully, after I was strapped, that I was actually innocent.
He asked me if I had ever done something wrong and gotten away with it.
Admitting that I had he said, “consider this punishment for one of those times”.

Life is not perfect and sometime you need to shut up and learn your lesson.
I still look back fondly on the life lessons that I learned from my mom and dad, even the ones that hurt.

They do it because it works.

I noticed, when teaching, that in any new situation students of various persuasions would test the waters of (fill in the blank)ist accusations. Instead of cowering as they expected, I found it most effective and just to IMMEDIATELY press their accusation to whatever formal redress mechanism existed – demanding that charges be addressed as policy provided. Against me, or against the student. Whichever they believed warranted. It put all of this nonsense to rest pretty quickly.

I agree. I for one have had it with the “race” card being played. Yet when white people are assaulted by blacks it is over looked. No wonder this country has some real problems. The press is complicit in all that is going on. Shame shame.
