‘Real History:’ The 1928 Presidential Election

This weeks ‘Real History’ documentary explores the vicious 1928 presidential election between Republican Herbert Hoover and Democrat Al Smith. Smith was the first Roman Catholic nominee for President, something that caused him to lose in a landslide. Opponents spread rumors that were Smith to be elected, the Pope would be dictating American policies. Of course, Hoover remained above the fray, but his surrogates were more than happy to savage his opponent. Smith lost to Hoover in a landslide.

In 2012, we once again have an unorthodox ticket, a Mormon and Roman Catholic, and surrogates willing to take the race into the gutter. Are we seeing the same presidential politics this time around that we saw in 1928? Watch a clip from Friday’s “Real News From The Blaze:”

Regardless of ones religious pursuits we are in a helluva mess right now with Obama. When in business, a CEO doesn’t seem to be working out you get rid of him by whatever means necessary, usually a “golden parachute” of some kind. Well okay good enough! Obama now has that golden parachute so throw his ass out of the plane and let’s move on to someone else before it is too late.

This is no longer a democrat/republican thing and for democrats to blindly follow this Obama guy simply because he is riding on a democratic ticket is absurd. The guy just simply has not worked out so sign him up for unemployment and let’s move on to something that just might be somewhat better than what we have now.

OBAMA MUST BE REMOVED FROM OFFICE.

Why is it that historians don’t want us to know that we are a constitutional Republic and NOT a democracy.
They keep saying democracy so our children and you adults will espouse the same “ignorance” in your everyday speech and conscience level.
You don’t find anything suspicious about this continued rhetoric.
Are you just as stupid as they are ???
No where in the Constitution is the word democracy used or in any of the 50 State Constitutions.

Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch
Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote

The anti-Catholicism was vicious in the 1928 campaign. Republican Hoover was a Quaker, and one wonders if he had not been running against Catholic Democrat Smith, if Hoover might not have felt the sting of some of the religious bigots. Strangely, the next time a Catholic ran, Democrat John Kennedy also ran against a Quaker Republican, Richard Nixon, The Catholic won than in 1960.
Though because of the religious issue Al Smith lost some Southern states that had not voted Republican since Reconstruction, he gained Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Also the popular vote for Smith and the Democrats in 1928 was about double the popular vote for the Protestant Democrat Davis who ran in 1924.

Al Smith was in favor of ending Prohibition. That was the “wet” dream referred to. FYI

I wouldn’t fear the Vatican if a Catholic gets elected. I’d fear the leftist Communism the Catholics bring to the table.

Well, a “converted” Muslim according to his own admitted past, but OHELLO‘s comments aren’t completely unfounded. He was born a Muslim according to his Indonesian records. You could say he converted to Christianity later in life IF you consider Reverand Wright a true conduit to Christ (I don’t).

A Catholic for the WH was not overcome until JFK in 1960. I remember wild accusations about the Vatican running things if JFK was elected.

The Catholic issue today that we have Pelosi, Kerry, Biden Catholics who wear the title but still covet their neighbors goods in the neam of elping others (building dependency). They support abortion, thereby playing God (“controlling the population of certain people”) while denying life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness! They rule that you get NOTHING!

Then you get the Paul Ryan Catholic who actually lives by the principles of the Bible, that our Creator makes us, makes us free, makes us equal in rights an opportunity, makes us individuals, individually responsible to help others, not collectively through the resources of others. Salvation is NOT collective.

I don‘t think we’re seeing as much of a religious bias as we did in the 1928 Election but I still think it‘s there in a small capacity but I think Americans appreciate someone who actually has declared faith instead other who just say they’re a “some-what” Christian like a certain a President.

The answer is no. I have heard no one attacking either Biden or Ryan for being Catholic. Romney’s Mormonism probably does not count much against him in evangelical circles, where Obama is anathema. Secular-minded Democrats don’t much care for Mormonism because it is a religion, not because of its specific features. The whole dynamic is totally unlike 1928.

So is Smith being Catholic like Romney being Morman, or Obama being Communist? I don’t understand the analogy ! Or maybe it is that Ryan is Catholic and no one will vote for Romney because Ryan is Catholic, or maybe it is Joe Biden being Catholic and no one would vote for Obama except that they did not know Joe was a Catholic so they got duped!! or maybe Joe is just a dope>?
