‘Real News From The Blaze’: Alleged Racially Motivated Assault in VA Leads to Outrage at Attackers and Media

The Blaze reported Tuesday on the underreported story of a couple attacked by a mob of 30 to 100 youths at an intersection in Norfolk ,Virginia. What makes the lack of media coverage surrounding the incident even more suspicious is that the alleged attackers were African-American and the couple Caucasians, who are both reporters at the same newspaper which avoided the story until mentioning it in an opinion piece two weeks later. The attack was described in the opinion piece on The Virginia-Pilot Tuesday:

Wave after wave of young men surged forward to take turns punching and kicking their victim.

The victim’s friend, a young woman, tried to pull him back into his car. Attackers came after her, pulling her hair, punching her head and causing a bloody scratch to the surface of her eye. She called 911. A recording told her all lines were busy. She called again. Busy. On her third try, she got through and, hysterical, could scream only their location.

They had stopped at a red light, in a crowd of at least 100 young people walking on the sidewalk. Rostami locked her car door. Someone threw a rock at her window. Forster got out to confront the rock-thrower, and that’s when the beating began.

Neither suffered grave injuries, but both were out of work for a week. Forster’s torso ached from blows to his ribs, and he retained a thumb-sized bump on his head. Rostami fears to be alone in her home. Forster wishes he’d stayed in the car.

The next day, Forster searched Twitter for mention of the attack.

One post chilled him.

“I feel for the white man who got beat up at the light,” wrote one person.

“I don’t,” wrote another, indicating laughter. “(do it for trayvon martin)”

The editorial writer Michelle Washington goes on to explain that police coded the incident as a “simple assault,” and reporters making routine checks of police reports would see “simple assault” and, if the names were unfamiliar, would be unlikely to write about it. Washington writes that in this case, editors hesitated to assign a story about their own employees.

“Would it seem like the paper treated its employees differently from other crime victims?”

After referencing the well-known Trayvon Martin case and questioning whether the Norfolk attack could have been racially motivated or a response to the killing in Florida, Washington explains why the incident is just in the paper now:

We cannot allow such callousness to continue unremarked, from the irrational, senseless teenagers who attacked two people just trying to go home, from the police officer whose conduct may have been typical but certainly seems cold, from the tweeting nitwits who think beating a man in Norfolk will change the death of Trayvon Martin.

How can we change it if we don’t know about it? How can we make it better if we look away?

Are we really no better than this?

The editorial attracted dozens of comments on the newspaper’s website and WND has since reported that many in the area are disgusted that news on the attack was buried by the paper.

“It is unbelievable that the Virginian-Pilot would BURY this story for two weeks for politically correct reasons. That is sad and disgusting,” David Englert of Norfolk told WND. “Someone should be fired or resign over the decision not to report this attack. It is a sad enough commentary on our society and community to read about how the responding police viewed this crime, but for our only newspaper to decide that they will hide from the truth rather than report the truth is PATHETIC! Any attack by a mob of people on any innocent victim should be put under a bright spotlight for all involved to be judged and exposed as appropriate, and to make sure that the criminal justice system does its job to protect those who obey the law.”

“Real News” opened Wednesday discussing the Norfolk attack and controversy surrounding the local media reaction to it.

With the discussion on race-relations possibly the tensest it has been in over a decade with the Trayvon Martin death and subsequent media portrayal of the case, panelists discussed Wednesday how as members of the media, feelings of hesitation arise when reporting and commenting on a story like what happened in Norfolk for, as Will Cain explains, “we just don’t know yet what really happened.”

Amy Holmes questioned though, black-on-white or not, is a mob of youths attacking two people in a car at an intersection not a story as it is?

S.E. Cupp commented, coming from an editorial board, she would have assigned the story, but questions those alleging that there were motives for the story being not reported.

“It’s a little irresponsible to project those concerns onto this story,” Cupp said, adding “I think it’s also a little naive to suggest that somehow crimes against white people in this country are underreported.”

    Keep a weapon of some significance with you if you are in danger. Do not set yourself up for anyone to beat and bang on you. Do what you got to do to stay safe. These who run in packs are cowards, they would never attack one on one, so make sure you have a great equalizer.

    S E CUPP is a disaster. She is a huge bag of hot air with glasses.She gives conservatives a bad name with her shameless self promotion and long winded empty responses. I hope Glenn watched that segment from Real News on the Norfolk case, because there was plenty of agenda last night and not much truth coming from Cupp and Cain. They were shamelessly politically correct, the antethesis of the GBTV mission. Cain and Cupp should go do that at CNN, not at GBTV. Not only was Cupp white washing the facts but she ridiculed and harshly accused other panelists, Sexton and Bila of being “irresponsible” because they were not buying the party line and they were questioning the response of the police and the paper. Thank you Sexton and Bila ! Why is Cupp on this show? She is terrible ! I’m so happy when I tune in and and she is not on because the show is so much better without her. When she is absent the panelists actually discuss the issues in an intelligent way. But when she is there she is CONSTANTLY interuppting, she is snarky, self promoting and often seems to be trying to undermine the other panelists while hogging the camera. Given the racially charged climate being perpetuated by the White House the last thing we need are conservative(?) pundits like Cupp and Cain drinking the koolaid and playing nice so they can keep their jobs at other media outlets. I’ve noticed this agenda in both of them before but last night it was so obvious, egregious and inexcusable.

    “WHITE PEOPLE DON’T HAVE CIVIL RIGHTS.” Or so says the former Clinton Admin’s commissioner on CIVIL RIGHTS. I used to think that statement was just another example of DEM lunacy, but today I see it differently. These people really do believe that and their actions are indicative of it. Ever heard of a anyone of color being charged with a HATE CRIME? Apparently, non whites are incapable of hate, right???? Hate crime legislation was exclusively drafted for white on black crime, yet the preponderance of that phenomena is just the opposite.

    now that was pretty dumb to get out of the car, no, no, never contront a group of 13percenters,never, even if it were 3 to one and not 100 to 1, they always work in groups, like a wolfpack,literally like animals do. The dumptruck driver in L.A. (Denny something?) riots, should have run straight thru that light,never stopped. There simply is no way to talk out, verbalize, rationale or otherwise reason with a band of chimps bent on getting something for nithing, and if your life is in the way of that,then so be it,they don’t care. So the BEST thing anyone could do is lock all the doors and barrell straight thru, let the cars weight do the negotiating, or else die trying to reason with the band of chimps, your call.

    Hearing S E Cupp’s politically correct, enormously naive take on the racial aspects of this story gives me cause to consider cancelling my subscription to GBTV. If I wanted politically correct, racially biased spin on my news I can get that all day long on the MSM for free. There most certainly is a reluctance on the part of the media to report any story of black on white violence. Example: When the young, white couple in Knoxville Tn. got carjacked, robbed, raped, tortured, murdered and had their bodies desecrated by 5 black monsters a couple of years ago it wasn’t even picked up and reported by the MSM for days while the local newspapers, and tv stations refused to call it a hate crime and tried to sweep it under the rug. I’m totally fed up with S. E. Cupp and I’m not willing to pay for such putrid illogical spinning and sanitazing of a black on white crime story that has already been shelved by the MSM. Don‘t tell me there’s no racial aspect to it. Don‘t tell me it’s not a hate crime. If 30-100 whites did the same to a young black couple it would be reported on the MSM 24/7 for months. Has Cupp even bothered to watch the hateful clips Glann Beck has shown recently of the New Black Panthers and Rev. Louis Fckurkind’s Nation of Islam members talking about killing crackers including women and children? Please Glenn, fire Cupp asap…. I was never expecting to see such brazen hypocrisy from GBTV.First Will Cain sets up the story and then refuses to make one comment, what a wimpy loser !! Crawl back to CNN you clown, Cain is a total waste of time. Then S E Cupp the bloviater starts talking nonsense about not having all the facts while frantically waving the politically correct flag but then worst of all starts she starts insulting the only guy on the panel with any guts, Buck Sexton because he is saying we have enough facts to know that there has been some kind of intentional cover up and he questions the motives of the newspaper involved. Well Bill O’ Reilly was all over this topic today and rightly so because anyone with a brain (which clearly excludes the pandering ego manic S E Cupp) can see that a mob of african americans assaulting to white people for being in their car at a red light deserves to be reported not covered up. That crime would be reported in NYC so I’m sure it should be reported in Norfolk Virginia. The Norfolk Pilot probably reports the local highschool football scores but they are not going to report two of their own reporters being beaten so badly that they couldn’t return to their jobs for a week.

      Did anybody watch the O’Reilly interview of Tavist Smiley about this attack? Made my blood boil. I kept waiting for O’Reilly to give him the tough questions but he babied him. Tavist Smiley felt so at home, that he referred to O’Reilly as “friend” as they parted. MSNBC couldn’t have done a better job.

    I live in Norfolk, Va…. the answer to why the Virginian Pilot did not cover this story is because they are..a LEFT WING media; propagandas….. Look at the CEO’s & ownerships, sponsers…it is all there. City Council members: Paul Riddick, look @ the corruptions in Norfolk, Va. You will under stand when you research the paper itself! The citizens have been SCREAMING about this for yr now and the inner city folk have been led by the pied piper called the Va. Pilot & its corrupted politicans….!!!!     It’s the 800 pound gorilla in the room, or the emperor doesn’t have clothes, or whatever. No newspaper, cable-channel, or network wants to be the one to say what everyone knows to be true.

    Trayvon’s death while tragic, is going to be justified despite every liberal legal expert, and talking head wishing it was different. Trayvon was beating the Zimmerman’s head into the concrete, the man feared for his life. He blew the punk away. It’s just as simple as that.

    All the story telling, showing pictures of the 12 year old version of Trayvon, instead of the thug with a gold grill; ain’t changing the facts. Al Sharpton’s screaming, and Black Panther threats won’t work either.

    But folk’s, the 800 pound Gorilla isn’t that Trayvon was a thug, or that Trayvon’s killing was justified.
    The 800 pound Gorilla is that elements of the media, black activists, liberals who need a distraction to wag the dog for Obama’s failed economic policies, are all pushing for a no joke race war.       The next rung on their ‘big ladder’ was when obama signed the ‘MARSHALL LAW’ executive order a couple of weeks ago. When the bullets start flying, that will give him the authority to call out all Nat‘l guard and law enforcement bodies to quell the ’emergency’ which by the way he fabricated and confiscate all privately owned fire arms without search warrants. We will then be at his mercy. Because then, only his union mafia and black panthers, et. al. will have firearms.

      Wish I could remember the name of the TV movie (I‘ll refer to as ’Wolverines. Staring Patrick Swayze.)
      It will be much like that only the invaders won’t be from a foreign country.

      Believe it or not, I’m not a conspiracy theorist. As a retired Army Intell Officer there is too much writing on the wall not to believe in this outcome.

      your comment begs the question(s): are you really that stupid and unaware? playing that stupid? or do you really believe that the current racial discord is based on whites hating blacks? or are your mental processes so skewed by those amongst you that are truly hating racists.

      I can’t deny, although wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could, that there are those whites who hate blacks merely because of the color of their skin. But the path to inevitable civil war (as I see it) is currently being forged by Obama, Holder, Jackson, Sharpton, Farrakan, et al., who don’t miss an opportunity to widen the schism between races, classes, children to parents and vice versa.

      I suspect you will disagree and if so I ask u to provide references where and when Obama or Holder has come before the American audience and demanded a stop to the violence and retaliation. I ask you provide a reference(s) where and when any one of the three ‘so-called‘ rev’s have appealed to the sensibility and humanity of the black race to act with restraint without moral turpitude.

      If you cannot or will not provide facts upon which to base your (or their) beliefs, then you , as they, have nothing but angry, destructive, volatile, abusive rhetoric to stand on.

      I truly don’t understand you. Please help me, regardless who you are for.

      This story was about 30-100 black mob attacked and beat two white reporters. There was a guy, I believe in Illinois, about 2 weeks ago that was beaten ON HIS PORCH into a coma from six blacks with the mantra, “retaliation for Trayvon.” A 78 years old white man, I believe in Ohio, was beaten by again a group of 5 blacks. Do you see a theme here? Any common threads? If not for race, what could all these be attributed to? Global Warming?

      Do you think these reports should be swept under the liberal rug that now covers America?Shouldn’t someone in this country be relied on to report the truth? They certainly aren’t going to get it from MSM; ABC;CBS;NBC;POLITICO; or CNN most of the time.

      How do/can we expect the honorable people of this nation: white or black, Democrat or Republican, to make probably the most important decision in our lifetime this November with only obama’s pep rallies and the main stream medias either ignoring the news or their biased, misleading liberal slant ?

    Like I‘ve always said blacks only attack in packs because they’re cowards and have to attack like that.
    The media not reporting it for a while is no surprise though,they’ve operated that way for years.
    The punks need to attack someone who’s armed and proficient in the use of firearms,someone like me or others who post on here and exercise their second amendment right, the outcome would be different and educational.
