‘Real News From The Blaze’: Big Govt. and Big Law Enforcement

Why do federal agencies like the Social Security administration and National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have law enforcement arms? Internet message boards and conspiracy websites have been buzzing in debate on this question after Alex Jones’s InfoWars called attention to a Social Security Administration solicitation for 174,000 rounds of “.357 Sig 125 grain bonded jacketed hollow point pistol ammunition” and a NOAA contract for 46,000 rounds of hollow point bullets along with 500 paper targets. The story emerged on the mainstream with a link from the Drudge Report and Fox News report resulting in many others now asking what do these agencies need to enforce with such firepower?
Fox News reports that the NOAA has said the bullets are meant for the Fisheries Office of Law Enforcement–after making what they claim was a “clerical error” in originally responding that the bullets were for the National Weather Service. A Social Security Administration blog post in response to concerns raised over their purchase indicates that the ammunition is for duty weapons for their special agents who are responsible for investigating violations of the laws that govern SSA’s programs.
In a political atmosphere where more and more Americans want smaller government, “Real News From The Blaze” Monday asked if Americans should be questioning the need for, and redundancy of, the various federal departments that have gun toting enforcers:

Don’t forget the TSA in all this, they are going to be setting up highway checkpoints to search cars and trucks on the Interstate system, again without proper training but with union cards.
Bend over and spread your cheeks.

I’ts long over due that Glenn Beck hired a professional on his staff. E.D. Hill will begin convention coverage but she‘s an odd’s on favorite to become a permanent member of the news team on GBTV.
GBTV. needs some seasoned news people to give the programming much more credibility.

Posted on August 20, 2012 at 10:47pmDepartment of Education Investigators…say what? I had no clue and I’ve been a cop in a big city for over 30 years. Now, before everyone gets their panties in a bunch, both the U.S. Fisheries and Social Security Admin. Office of Inspector General have had armed enforcement and investigative units for decades. It would be ludicrous to send all of those cases to the FBI, so let them handle them internally. I know of several fisheries (State and Federal) that have been killed by poachers and other criminals over the years. You can’t deny them the ability to defend themselves. That said, if any law enforcement agency is going to get all “cowboy” on folks it always seems to be one of these little known federal agencies. I have to agree with MAPACHE though…way to many players in the federal LE arena and several have tactical teams. The reality is they could farm most of that work out to local LE teams that generally have more experience and real world operations than the fed teams, and sometimes they do. Some states have search and seizure laws even more restrictive than federal law. So since federal agents operate under less stringent federal search and seizure rules, they frequently use their own teams to get around state SnS restrictions. BTW, shotguns for agents is no big deal. If a gunfight does erupt, a pistol is a paltry replacement for a long gun. It is always better to have a long gun (preferably a rifle).

Posted on August 20, 2012 at 10:21pmThe US Government may need numerous law enforcement agencies but there should be a review and downsizing of many of them. Most also have “special operations units” to allow their officers to put on BDUs and act like SWAT (abet most without the skill set or training).

Posted on August 21, 2012 at 12:28pmLuker, the Germans have always loved uniforms and now the “Darth Vader/Storm Trooper look” is epidemic in U.S. law enforcement. I remember when I was a kid and policemen looked like policemen and your parents told you that they were your friends and that you could trust them. Now anyone who can get himself a set of black BDU’s, a balacava, and a web belt is kitted out like he is going to storm a fortified gang headquarters, and it is ludicrous. When I was stationed in Germany my wife and I went to a small-town wine festival, the German equivalent of a county fair. There was a parade of local civic organizations to open the festival, and the local Red Cross chapter marched in in step and in formation. They were wearing field-grey wool uniforms and looked like the Whermacht. Wannabe-SWAT cops are getting to that point in the U.S.
