‘Real News From The Blaze’: DOJ and ACLU Clash Over Internet and Phone Surveillance

The American Civil Liberties Union has sued the Department of Justice along with other federal agencies to disclose its use of pen register and trace-and-track technology. These are surveillance tools that capture the email addresses contacted, phone numbers called and websites visited by a person. The DOJ is required by law to report its use annually, but has not done so since 2009. While neglecting to disclose this data, U.S. law enforcement is the global leader in information requests and content removal from companies like Twitter, YouTube and Google.

But is this monitoring by the U.S. Marshals Service and DOJ a key protection rather than dangerous invasion of privacy? The U.S. government argues that the surveillance technology is critical for law enforcement. The folks at “Real News” Monday debated whether the ACLU is on the right side of this one, or if law enforcement should be given very broad leeway in order to keep us safe. Matt Welch of Reason Magazine joined the panel for Monday’s show. Watch a clip from the segment below:

Fighting each other? So you believe law enforcement should be able to “spy” on anyone it wants? Does that make you feel safe? So it’s OK by you if your local cops have the power to watch your teenage daughter take a shower…or you & your spouse being intimate in your bedroom? That sounds extreme(@ least I hope so–if not brush up on your Mandarin/Cantonese & go to China-you’ll love it!) but that’s a logical extension based on reasoning. Bush, Clinton, Baby Bush, Obama…all the same. Best way to learn about USA political science is watch Sylvester Stallone. He hid in Canada to avoid Vietnam tour like any great draft dodger. Comes back & did Rambo series: #1-Rambo is violent crazy Vietnam vet fighting law enforcement. Rambo II he exposes POWs in Vietnam. Rambo III he’s in Afghanistan fighting Russia with the bin Laden-like Muslims, & depicting them as heroes. So USA loved them(as we did Iraqi S. Hussein, & many all over world) until we decided to spin propaganda in order to create an enemy–& steal our freedom & sweet land of liberty is burning down.

We’ve allowed our government to run roughshod over the constitution and bill of rights for spo long that most people actually believe the BS that the patriot act and NDAA,two unconstitutional laws are designed to ‘protect’ us when in reality they’re designed to keep us under surveillance illegally.

Sue the bastards ACLU,do something right for once.

For once I will take the side of the ACLU, as the Feds have all too long now under Obama pressed in on our civil liberties more than any other president in the history of our nation. How much longer until the admin strikes out with force and blood and steel?

Our government has turned against the people. It has been an ongoing process since 9/11. We have people at all levels of office that believe they are above the law. The Constitution means nothing. Our freedoms and liberties are tossed in the wind like a piece of trash.

While I do not like what they do most of the time or what they stand for every once in a while they do something right. Good for the ACLU for standing up on this. It seems that they are the only ones that have a set.

All the while the so called defenders of freedom, the republicans, say nothing as they too are complicit and actively engaged in the destruction of this country.

Watch out sheeple, there is a terrorist under every rock and on every phone.

Comrades I don’t believe that the ACLU is doing something right for a change! This must be a mistake and the person responsible will probably be fired!
Since Dear Leader controls the DOJ this won’t go far, but it is still unusual!

Huh, hasn’t reported anything since 2009….obviously it’s Bushes fault, he forgot to give Barrack the password to the program, and instructions on how to use it. But this is the most transparent administration since the Castro regime.

The ACLU and the DOJ don’t clash over our foreign policy which violates the establishment clause seperating Church and State. They don’t want any crosses in your classroom though.
