United States Marine Corps has reportedly established a first-of-its-kind Law Enforcement Battalion. The specialized force of military police officers are intended to be quickly deploy worldwide to help investigate crimes from terrorism to drug trafficking and train fledgling security forces in allied nations.
The idea of a Marine Corps unit dedicated to Law Enforcement has made some Americans very nervous, especially those prone to repeat that “the United States can’t be the policemen of the world.” Minnesota Army National Guard Captain Pete Hegseth joined ‘Real News’ Tuesday to discuss the usefulness of this force:

Posted on July 25, 2012 at 2:33amThis is disappointing. I’ve always thought of the other branches as little more than mercenaries, but I thought the US Marine Corp would adhere to its oath.
I hope that they do and that my hackles are up because of an otherwise undetected gust of wind.

That is the whole idea of a POLICE Battalion. They are trained NOT to shoot but to PUT DOWN civil unrest and to make ARREST. Infantry Battalions even have Riot Control training. This is a whole new ballgame. These are young men following orders. You do not follow orders, it is the BRIG or drummed out with a LESS than Honorable Discharge !! Any military base can be LOCKED down in minutes. Is that to keep Terrorist from getting in? It could also keep THE TROOPS locked in !! Weapons an ammunition are locked in armories. Taking over a Military base would not be that hard to do from WITHIN !!!

Posted on July 25, 2012 at 7:57amAs a former Soldier of the U.S. Army, I can tell you that they take their oaths just as seriously as the Marines (at least they did in the 90′s) However, Those oaths are what are going to be used AGAINST the American populace. These soldiers are going to follow orders, because at this point, THAT is their oath.
I talk to plenty of active duty servicemen and women that I know personally and continually point them to articles like this and talk to them about what i believe is really going on, but in the end it is going to come down to each of them recognizing the problems and being willing to turn to their C.O. and say “no.”

Posted on July 25, 2012 at 9:40amThe most disappointing thing here is how this is being twisted beyond reason. This has nothing at all to do with domestic police. Military Police is how the military polices their own forces around the world. Nothing new here. This new move is only about making existing M.P. forces more efficient. This police battalion is primarily a COST CUTTING measure. The ideas is to consolidate specialized police functions into a single unit with rapidly deployable teams, rather than maintain those specialized capabilities all over the world. This actually amounts to a reduction in overall footprint.

Posted on July 25, 2012 at 9:53amYou all need to relax. This is a response to the Pentagon and the White House being so FUBAR it can’t put shoes on the right foot let alone tie them.
The USMC forces are design to assualt, kill, secure, then leave. This extended action in Afghanistan and Iraq is not part of the force projection the Marines are built around.
This police force is designed to fill in the gap with people who are trained like cops, not just combat troops.
Marines take their oath very very seriously. We take our history, traditions, and esprit de corps very very seriously. And neither of those would allow anyone who calls them self a Marine to be turned into some force to be used against the American populous.

I guess if a president wanted to execute every exec order issued back to JFK to lock down the country and declare a national emergency he could use these guys enforce martial law, but then again before today he could have just used existing military and national guard to do that. This does not effect us much more than the fact we just have one more department to fund with in the marines

Posted on July 25, 2012 at 12:10pmAs a former Marine, I am worried about the possibility of abuse by the government of this new elite force. When I was in uniform, I was young and did what I was told, and if I had questions about the orders I received, I kept them to myself (within reason). The problem isn’t the loyalties of the Marines involved, or with the “direct orders” given by NCO’s, but rather with the “lawful orders” given through the ranks of officers in the chain of command. If it isn’t stopped at that level, you bet your ass Marines will follow through with their orders, at least initially. Remember, it isn’t the Marine who pulls the trigger when firing his weapon, but rather the Commander-In-Chief that “pulls the trigger” when making a deployment order.
I do have faith that there are enough officers who will do the right thing if ordered to confront Americans and break Posse Comitatus, but then again I used to have faith that our representatives would actually represent us. I haven’t made my mind up on how I feel about this, but I raised an eyebrow when I read it.
The bottom line is there is no need for this. Marines kill, that’s our job; we aren’t cops and never should be.

Posted on July 25, 2012 at 1:10pmAs a soldier in the US Army, I find it insulting to say that we are closer to mercenaries. I am not one for the branch vs. branch mentality. My one experience working with Marine unit was not a good one, but I do not hold that over all Marines.
It makes sense to use the Marines in this case because the President has more direct control over the Marines than he does the Army. I find this to actually be a weakness for the Marines and a weakness for freedom itself. I would rather the President have FAR less control over the military than he does now.
Remember when we had freedom? Neither do I. I read about it in books though.

Posted on July 25, 2012 at 2:05amI am not sure what to think about this. I am no expert but I thought that the Green Berets were very good at working with the locals. The Navy Seals were used to help bring down Escobar in Columbia. It seems that several branches of our Military already have Special Forces that are capable of doing these types of operations.
I also believe that all branches of the Military have their own Military Police. It does seem odd to have given it the name of Marine Corp Law Enforcement. I would like to know if their power to act is solely on foreign soil.
Makes you wonder whether this group will be given legal authority to perform their duties anywhere like the Marshals had jurisdiction in every state of the union during the Wild West period.
Sometimes it would be nice to have all of these questions answered when a story like this is published.
1. What are their powers?
2. Where will they be permitted to operate?
3. Will they have power on U.S. soil?
4. Will they be permitted to act in conjunction with local law enforcement?
5. If this Law Enforcement went into Syria tomorrow, would they work within the current laws of the administration or with the Rebels?
So I take it that this Marine Law Enforcement would be trained in the current law of the land and the law of the Muslim Brother Hoods Sharia Law as well.
Oh well, it just sounds a bit strange in my opinion.

The Marine Corp’s Commandant (Highest ranking Marine Officer) reports to the Navy’s Highest office, because Technically, the Marine Corp is part of the Department of the Navy. So the police units on Marine bases are Navy Shore Patrol. Hope that Helps you. What they could be doing is finally allowing the Marine Corp to be their own Department, which would mean they need their own policing unit.

Job Description: Military police perform assigned mi:itary law enforcement duties to uphold the criminal justice system, maintain good order and discipline, and support the commander’s law enforcement and security requirements in peacetime and combat operations. Typical duties include foot and motorized patrol, control of pedestrian and vehicular traffic, flight line security, crime prevention/physical security, desk sergeant, communications dispatcher, squad leader, operations sergeant, platoon sergeant, and provost sergeant billets. MOS 5811 is very demanding in that the military police are confronted with every form of violation and criminal liability, misdemeanor through felony.

FYI……
The Marine Corps has always had a Military Police the MOS number is 5811. They do mostly base security and corrections. The Marines also have civilian police counterparts that do the same job, they just make a lot more money.
The Navy doesn’t use Shore Patrol anymore, thats all handled through the Master at Arms, and thats the same as Military Police, and yes they have a well paid civilian force as well………….

Posted on July 25, 2012 at 1:58amRSANCHEZ1, It does have a chance of that. If the unit is assembled, and trained to become trainers themselves, I can see doing as CPT Hegseth believes. Elements of the unit would deploy to help certain areas to re-establish their local police departments, while in the beginning working with them carrying most of the weight. Then train up the local department and help recruit new blood. If the BN stays stateside, then that act alone would concern me for a future suspension of the Posse Comitatus Act. That definitely bothers me.

Posted on July 25, 2012 at 4:22amRJ, that’s exactly what my concern is. No one would expect our military to turn on it’s own countrymen but… if they were considered “law enforcement” and our government declared certain types of citizens to be outside the law then they would have a police force not only capable of arresting these people but have the ability to use the full weight of military force to ’round those people up”. I think they are preparing for future “problem elements” in the US.

Here’s what Scituate officials had to say in re the bonfire ban during Independence Day celebrations:
=> “The people were compliant, most of them — 99.5 percent…. Signs were… posted…and notifications updated to the town’s website, warning residents that they would be arrested if they did not follow the town’s NEW [under Barack] rules. A bevy of safety personnel were brought out…to enforce the mandate….[Fire Chief Richard] Judge was confident that the mandate would be continued next year [hmm].” (brackets mine)
http://www.boston.com/yourtown/news/scituate/2012/07/scituate_claims_success_with_f.html
Even if you believe the ban was warranted, can you extrapolate the control scenario to the greater populace, yes or no? Hint: Most people comply under threat of arrest and/or hefty fines. Marines won’t need to shoot; just patrol and arrest non-compliers, as noted @79USMC83. Granted, red states will merit extreme measures. So, make sure you have a safe haven for your loved ones, or security personnel will break down your door and tase/lase your wife, kids and dog. Then they’ll drag you away. That’s the best-case scenario.

Posted on July 25, 2012 at 2:53pmBecause of requirement sent down from the White House to the pentagon, and thus down to the Marines, people detained in this form of war are not POWs, and they have to be treated with the gloves of a cop, not a infantryman… Also our foreign bases require a police presence on the base, even expeditionary bases, something the Marines have a ton of in Afghanistan. Marines have been getting in trouble left and right because they have not been trained properly how to deal with the individuals that are brought in. And the MOS that does handle it has been woefully understaffed and miss appropriated because they were never designed to handle this mess handed down by Obama and his Muslim loving PC administration…
This group has been formed to fill this gap, and it’s been in the works for a long long time from the brass inside the USMC….It’s not new people, its a reallocation of resources with a fancy new name and some outlined responsibilities…They are no more a danger to your rights than the Marine Corps Band…
It’s a response by the Marine Corps to a ****** situation, in which they are undermanned and underfunded. Something the USMC is use to. The mission wont’ change, so we adapt and overcome.
Why you are blabbering about some bon fire ban and a bunch of old folks pissed off at the cops I have no idea. The guys who put on a Marine uniform and the guys who put on a cop uniform are vastly different.

Posted on July 25, 2012 at 4:41amELEUTHERIA, me neither. I sold all my guns to some guy at a gun show. Don’t remember his name or what he looked like either. Yep, sold every one of them. Don’t have a single one left. They’re all gone.

Posted on July 25, 2012 at 5:23amPosse Comitatus Act : Contrary to popular belief, the Act does not prohibit members of the Army from exercising state law enforcement, police, or peace officer powers that maintain “law and order”; it simply requires that any authority to do so must exist with the United States Constitution or Act of Congress
Report Post »The Navy and Marine Corps are prohibited by a Department of Defense directive (self-regulation), but not by the Act itself.
