‘Real News From The Blaze:’ Medi(s)care Facts

At the onset of the news that Rep. Paul Ryan would be named Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s running mate, the Obama campaign and allies quickly exerted considerable resources into vilifying the Ryan budget plans for Medicare. Some have called the Democrats’ campaign against Ryan a “Mediscare” plan, as every Democrat at arms length to a media outlet has regurgitated that the Wisconsin Republican’s budget plan, which is not the same as what a Romney/Ryan administration will endorse, “ends medicare as we know it.”

In fact, Ryan’s plan keeps Medicare as it us up until 2022, then reforms the program for new beneficiaries while launching a so-called “premium-support” system, where seniors would pick form a choice of private plans on a new Medicare exchange with the help of government-provided subsidies. Ryan claims his reforms will make the program sustainable, which as it is now will become insolvent by 2024 according to nonpartisan reports.

But are voters taking the bait offered by those opposed to Ryan’s plan?

Washington Post-ABC News poll released Wednesday shows 41 percent of Americans view Ryan favorably, while 37 percent rate him unfavorably — slightly improved from last week’s polling. Among seniors–the group expected to be most swayed against Ryan’s Medicare ideas–the numbers are even better for the Wisconsin Republican: 50 percent favorable and 35 percent unfavorable.

Grace Marie Turner, President of the Galen Institute, joined “Real News From The Blaze” Thursday to discuss what the Ryan plan truly includes and how it compares to what Obamacare has in store for the nation’s seniors, which Republicans claim is not an easy pill to swallow.

my husband and I are seniors, and he has already lost his advantage so we had to find another plan. This is only going to get worse if we don’t get Ryan in there with his plan. God help us all.

I agree and I am a senior. No I don’t have the big income…still farm a little in Colorado. What will happen to me. Well I have family and if the pols don’t steal my farm I will be OK. The health care thing is tough to figure out but if Gov is out of the equation and tort reform would happen then I believe the costs would come down. TEA

    The arguement is simple.

If any nation keeps spending money that it doesn’t have then it will end up like Greece. That is; flat broke, hopelessly indebted, and its citizens ruined.

Why is this so hard to understand?

Anybody who runs a household budget understands the basics, because the basic rules are exactly the same. Prudent borrowing can advance a household‘s wellbeing as it can a nation’s, but at the end of the day the bills must be paid. If the household‘s or the nation’s income cannot support the borrowing, then either stop borrowing or increase the income – or both, preferably. All other actions lead to ruin.

The focus of the Romney/Ryan campaign is correct. Reduce expenditure and create more productive jobs.

It is sensible to do it as painlessly as possible, of course, but if nations don’t do it themselves it will, most assuredly, be done for them.

And no one is mentioning that Obamacare cuts payments to Nursing Homes I guess we will have to let Grandma and Grandpa move back home or on to the streets which should be a frightening issue.

If privatization isn’t the answere for Medicare, if that would be so bad, than what is the alternative? It can’t just go on as it is forever. So if privatization isn’t the answere, then what is?

Democrates will never answere that question because the answere to that question is exactly what Americans fear most: Rationing.

Get rid of it all together. Let the free market adjust so that the prices of services reflect the markets ability to pay for them rather than from schedule C on page 457 of the Medicare price guide. Along with that enact meaningful tort reform to reduce the true cost of service delivery.

Get government out of the Dr. office, take off the training wheels and let price competition and innovation happen.
