French voters have given President Nicolas Sarkozy the boot and elected Socialist Party candidate Francois Hollande to be the next leader of France, sending a clear sign of rejection to austerity measures and shockwaves to markets. With a current 35 hr/max work week, retirement with benefits at 55, and little time given for the progression of Sarkozy’s policies, some from the outside looking in question if austerity was even given a far shot. Yeshiva University Economics and Philosophy Professor James Otteson joined “Real News” Monday to discuss the affect this election could have on financial markets long term, what policies Hollande is likely to put in place, and what actual austerity is.

Posted on May 8, 2012 at 4:39amRecently a spokesperson for Hollande said that as socialists “of course” they agreed with Obama. So now the WH Occupier has two buddies, Putin and Hollande, in Eastern and Western Europe, respectively. Real bad news.

Posted on May 8, 2012 at 10:11pmI understand the people of France voted for him, they like the easy life. But I can’t believe the majority of Americans believe the same. They voted for Obama because he was black and they hoped he would unite the country but to many see what his agenda is and I can’t believe they will vote for him again.

Posted on May 8, 2012 at 12:43amThis is a serious problem, the US needs to disconnect itself out of the world economy, if Europe is going to go under, so be it, be we can’t get dragged down with it….. its a tough procedure to accomplish, like removing a thousand blood vessels from a blob of cancer. However the US needs to find ways to become more self contained….
Once Romney is in office, he needs to go ape-doody on signing leases and permits for IMMEDIATE drilling and we need to keep that oil within the US, no selling to anyone except Japan, Canada and the UK, the rest of the world can fend for itself. We need to cut off Arabia and S. America, and stop funding those countries completely with our oil purchases.
We need to make ANY foreign aid performance based…. you show us a year of solid positive results in fight against terrorism, helping US interests, etc…. then and ONLY then do we give even one dollar in foreign aid.

Posted on May 8, 2012 at 12:55amTrue. We must reduce the size of the cancer (the Fed. guberment) first. When Imam Obama apoligized to the world in front of the UN, I knew that we were in trouble–this idget wants to make us reliant upon Europe. Trecherous despotism.

Posted on May 7, 2012 at 11:30pmI think the French have the same problem that killed King Louie. They love luxury, pleasure and leisure but don’t want to face up to there’s not enough money to pay for it.

Posted on May 7, 2012 at 11:04pmEither way you have to make a change in how your debts are paid. Since austerity is out! You are probably thinking of the easy way out in the beginning, just like Obama did. Print, print, print, print, print, spend, spend, spend, spend. One word of thought! It get’s old wearing down your currency and sooner or later it will be worthless! Then what? More taxes? From who when no one has any real money?
I predict and please make it not so! The USA will have some severe economic problems leading into this winter. You can only print money so long before it catches up! The banks were never held responsible and there are many more lessons in store! The wave is coming soon and the boat is made of paper! Good luck!

Posted on May 7, 2012 at 10:57pmhmmm, France has a suicide pact with their socialist tendencies. US should not intervene as France accelerates into ruin.
America should instead reaffirm its commitment to freedom in all its forms – individual freedom guided by the Constitution AND free markets, along with a strong security posture with superior military, self-reliance…
