‘Real News From The Blaze’: Syria Unrest Escalates With Coordinated Bomb Attack

The latest turn in the 18-month people’s uprising against the brutal Syrian government came with a highly coordinated bomb attack Wednesday that killed three top military and security leaders in the Syrian regime, including President Bashar al-Assad’s brother-in-law and defense minister, who were holding a meeting in the national security building. The bombing attack, which some now say was a suicide attack, has been seen as a major success for the opposition but raises lots of questions for observers and Western powers in regards t0 what could emerge from the conflict and how much longer the regime can hold power.

“Is the use of suicide bombing, for example, a sign of the greater involvement of Islamic jihadis?” Fareed Zakaria writes on CNN.com. Going on to write “What is relevant is this: we don’t know much about the rebels. We don’t know, for example, how organized they are or whether they are bands of free floating groups. We don’t know what is their agenda or agendas. And we also, despite today’s reports, don’t really know how effective they are.”

Kofi Annan is still pushing his peace plan, but the ever-growing violence this week provides further evidence that his plan is not working. The White House says President Barack Obama called Russian President Vladimir Putin following the attack and discussed the need to support a political transition as soon as possible. While there still remains a sour taste amongst Americans to the idea of intervening in another conflict in the Middle East, more voices are speaking out against what appears to be the “coup de grâce that Mr. Obama and his indignant secretary of state are still counting on” where in combination with sanctions, one of the Syrian government’s few remaining allies Russia; forsakes the Assad regime.

On “Real News” Wednesday, the panel discussed what the attack says about troubling new trends in bloody conflict, and what plans are still on the table for the U.S. to achieve the least damaging outcome in Syria for the West. Watch a clip below, featuring guest Dr. Jonathan Schanzer of the Foundation for Democracies:

It wasn’t a suicide attack, those reports had been discredited before this was posted, even by Syrian TV. The good news is Hezbollah no longer has popular support due to their backing and aiding Assad.

The unrest has been escalating in the middle east for so long, I‘m surprised it hasn’t toppled and gone crashing into the Mediterranean Sea.

Seems to be a whole heckuva lotta ‘normalcy bias’ and cognitive dissonance – “NO WAY!…” – Let‘s not forget the ’oops’ moment, “…after MY election, I will have more latitude…” — What is the nature of its origin, what does it do, what does it want, why? –

I really hope we don’t get invovled but that seems unlikely.

Looks like Obama is going to have us in another illegal and unwanted war up to our necks; this will be on top of his helping the radical terror and extremist groups now seeking to topple the Assade govt; now how many of our troops and arms have already been involved on behalf of the terrorists at the order of Obama?

Unfortunately, the agitation in Syria is a bipartisan effort. John McCain and others have supported all kinds of monkeying around in that country.

Maybe someday we’ll learn to leave well enough alone. But for now, we can take pride in giving moral support to terrorist rebels.

And Russia is on the right side of history on this one. Who would have thought? (I’m not surprised; the Orthodox Patriarchs of Moscow (Kyrill) and Antioch (Ignatius) have been in close contact throughout this period, and Russia is going to defend the Christians if no one else will.)

Why are we supporting the rebels? Why do we keep agitating what was a stable situation?

The Assad regime is the only thing stopping the jihadists from killing all the Christians. The rebels have already cleared Homs of all its Christians. The Antiochian Orthodox Church (of Straight Street and “they were first called Christians in Antioch” fame) supports Assad, not because he’s a good guy, but because he at least understood the need for stability to protect ethnic and religious minorities—of which he is one in Syria.

I’m tired of all these American “Christians” who cry for “solutions” to problems we created—solutions that end up harming the Christians in the region. It is madness. Stay out of it. The blood of dead Christians will be on America’s hands if we continue acting this way.

Well!!! DUH!!! I just wonder how much Obama is behind the unrest. This is all planned and is part of the world takeover. Freedom is the victim and control under one government is well under way.

Trollmonger, Pentagon whistle blower said Syria was on their hit list during the Bush era. She’s proven incredibly accurate. Too bad this is the only thing that has fundamentally changed. Sigh.
