‘Real News’ War Room: Grim Milestone for U.S. Troops in Afghanistan

While the majority of media has been preoccupied elsewhere this week, the number of American servicemen killed in Afghanistan has surpassed 2,000. Even more troubling than this is the reports that more than half of the deaths in Afghanistan have come in the last 27th months, meaning that the conflict has actually been escalating. In what was once called “the war of necessity” by President Obama, there seems to be a lot of attention being paid to the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden, the original reason the U.S. invaded in the first place, but very little attention is being given to an increasingly difficult situation on the ground in Afghanistan. Afghan militants fired rockets at a plane used by the top U.S. military officer on Tuesday, and the more than 80,000 American troops still fighting in Afghanistan are dying at a rate of one a day.
If we include the conflicts in Syria and the escalation of the Iran-Israel tensions, is all of the attention still given to the bin Laden capture a way to divert from what has been something of a negligent “Lead from Behind” foreign policy? Watch a clip from “Real News” Wednesday that looks to answer this question, while joined by guest Richard Miniter, author of “Leading From Behind.”

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 1:05pmThis from memory so it may not be absolutely accurate. Kipling wrote this about the British Afganistan failure. I suspect more than one Russian soldier recited the verse. I know my son recited it to me before he deployed.
When you lie bleeding on Afghanistans plains
And the women come to cut what remains
Why you roll on rifle
And blow out your brains
And go to God like a Soldier.
I was in Vietnam during the wind down. I know I didn’t want my men to be killed by the last bullet in a war we lost. I know I didn’t.
Announcing our withdrawl date emboldens the enemy and erodes our troops morale.
There will always be a rearguard. I pray daily my son is not in it.

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 12:17pmAs far as the lame Media and “O”whatabummer are conserned since this is a democrat administration, those boy,s who are dieing over there are not being killed by the enemy, but are dieing of natural causes. So there is no need to report the number killed. The MEDIA lost the ability to count the day Bush left office“ ”O“whatabummer”

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 8:06amIt is time to stop the war. Romney had better get on board the end the war movement; there is no reason or sense in continuing this travesty in Afghanistan. Young Americans are being sacrificed on the altar of political expendiency and their military leaders are no more than political robots following the orders of the idiots in the Obama regime. Afghanistan is not worth one American life; withdraw now. Let these barbaric people build their own democracy with their own blood otherwise it is a waste of time , money and most important American lives.

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 6:04amThere is a large group of Americans that want to reduce the foreign role of troops, and do so without jeopardizing current lives? What about major Iraqi banks getting caught helping Iran launder money recently? Why are Americans in the dark? International trade is forcing nations to become independent in the face of senseless military alliances?
I hope not, but are they even asking the questions?

Posted on August 23, 2012 at 3:05amEven one death is sad, even if in a good cause. In the case of Afghanistan, what is it that NATO (really, the U.N.) says we’re trying to accomplish there by supporting a corrupt tyrant? No Congressional declaration of war. Acting under NATO authority. An Afghan populace that would prefer a Muslim theocracy. I don’t see a happy ending for U.S. interests anywhere, in any of that.
Two thousand deaths is a tragedy, but what about the millions we kill in America through abortion? Americans used to be able to believe that their government officials at least knew what was right and wanted to do it. What changed? The people that elect those officials!

Posted on August 22, 2012 at 10:27pmOne hot desert morning at dawn’s early light
While trudging through the sand
I found a piece of paper
Clutched in a young man’s hand
And upon that paper the words he wrote
Were not filled with despair
Just thoughts from the heart of a brave young lad
He called it, “A Soldier’s Prayer”
I took the paper from his hand and read it aloud…
Will there be a place in Heaven
For a person such as me
Who, through youth and the love for life
Isn‘t all you’d have me be?
I’ve been a man but a short time now
And I’ll ask you this, if I might
Isn‘t fighting for freedom’s cause
A fight that’s always right?
The men I’ve killed, some things I’ve done
Are not things I’ve wanted to do
But a job I believe had to be done
By we who believe in you
I had those thoughts upon my mind
When I heard that deadly sound
Then, all around me, one by one
My friends fell to the ground
Somehow I knew before it hit
Fear ran up my spine
I felt the blast tearing my side
I knew this one was mine
There’ll be much grief for loved ones at home
when they learn that I am dead
Please ease their pain and let them know
These things that I have said
Time’s run out, I can feel death’s sting
Oh, God, please hear my plea
Let there be a place in Heaven
For a person such as me
Lord, this is the chaplain, I’m here with this lad
Our country’s given the finest it had
We who are older and have studied your word
Know this boy’s prayer is more than just heard
Con’t…

Posted on August 22, 2012 at 8:39pmOnce again, this is why you don’t let politicians run the war. The president and congress are supposed to vote for war, pick the enemy, and then loose the military to do their job. The job of the military is to destroy the enemies ability to wage war. It isn’t policing, it isn’t nation building. It is pure destruction and should not be let off the leash lightly.
The afghan people don’t appear to want us there, their own troops turn on our troops, their leader would rather make deals with that Taliban than the US. Oh, and our IDIOT PRESIDENT told them enemy when we would be leaving. I don’t know who is a bigger threat to our fighting men and women, the Taliban fighter behind the rifle or the president who sent our troops there for no good reason. We kicked out the Taliban and rescued the people from their tyranny. Then we tried to train them to hold their own. They have turned on us and think the Taliban is better. Time to pull out and let them have the choice they made. They either need to stand on their own or they can go back to the way it was.

Posted on August 22, 2012 at 8:49pmIts a tough sell wolfgang. 4 years ago, republicans nominated a candidate on the strength of his ‘nation building’ and ‘policing’ background…. There is a huge gap between what you said and the average republican – i hope the tea party has closed that gap a lot

Posted on August 22, 2012 at 8:21pmAnd the media yawns. When Bush was president we had the daily body count from the Associated Press. Somehow they’ve run out of interest in reporting the deaths, especially how most have occured during Obama’s tenure. This was the “right” war, said candidate Obama. Right?
