Reality Check: Mother Forced to Sell Handwritten Obama Letter to Prevent Eviction

Destiny Matthis, 26, with her three children and the Obama letter.

Destiny Mathis is a 26-year-old mother of three from Indiana. She‘s been a fan of Barack Obama’s, even campaigning for him in 2008. But now, times are hard, and she’s being forced to sell one of her most treasured Obama mementos, a handwritten letter from the president, so she can make her rent payments.

“I campaigned for him hard,” Mathis told the Huffington Post. “I got the shirts made, the Barack the Vote shirts made. We’ve done a lot.”

But reality soon set in. After having a third child, born with health problems, and her partner leaving her, she was struggling to make ends meet. So, she decided to write the president.

“I wrote him just expressing my concern about what’s going to happen in the next two years,” she told HuffPo. “I know he’s under a lot of stress, but I need to see more results.”

Surprisingly, he responded, telling her it would get better:

But it didn’t get better. And now, Destiny is having to sell the letter:

Out of desperation, Mathis contacted Gary Zimet, president of Moments in Time. Zimet has sold eight handwritten letters from President Obama, along with the actual Schindler’s List and other pieces of American history.

Zimet said that handwritten letters from Obama on White House stationary are “extremely rare” and he hopes to sell Mathis’ letter for $11,000.

“I am just a little bit weary of the promises that he’s made,” Mathis said. “I really haven’t been seeing any kind of changes that affect me directly. … We need the money so we can move into something that’s compatible with the kids and to help us out. We are really, really struggling. It’s hard for us right now.”

    Maybe she needs to hear the song, “Promises promises” by the naked eyes. That song just jumped into my head when I was reading this article.

    And on another note, I don’t think this hopey, changey letter will bring that much. I think it has more value because it was written by the first president who happened to have a “black” skin color. It’s not like it was worth anything to him.

      Yes, it’s tough to feel sypathy for her if you take the time to read the whole story like you did. She did everything wrong from becoming an unmarried mother of three to supporting, campaigning for and voting for Obama and then expecting him to take care of her. What do you want to bet she has a 65“ flat sceen and a full satellite TV package in her ”crib”?

      Well if I’m correct Kate Gosselin who had 8 kids by her husband is now filing for child support and alimony because she is not getting anything from him. So it does happen in white households as well and i guess soon she will be on welfare too!! All you great hypocrites called Christians act as if you all had kids in wedlock? Like some of you don’t have some bastards out there. Who are you to judge anyone and then claim the woman to be on welfare. Well she has 3 kids and maybe she needs to get some help so i guess child support and state medical it is.     I really hate to sound critical of Destiny’s situation, but she may want to consider looking for ways to improve her life by herself. Waiting for Obama to find money from his stash may take awhile. Sorry, folks, but the stash is as empty as his words.

    I feel bad for her but if she was struggling before why have another child? Her letter to Obama telling him that she is still waiting to see help is indicative of the entitlement attitude. People need to understand that self reliance is what you should be striving for, not dependence.

    Here’s an idea. Quit expecting government to save you. Get involved with charities that can actually help. Start your own business; it doesn’t always have to cost a lot, especially if you have a skill.

    Things will never get better if you think the government will save you. That mentality is plantation mentality. Stop waiting for the master to tell you what to do. Live free and pursue your own happiness.

By accepting all of the government aid she will become in effect, a slave. Unfortunately for her children, the way of the mother is generally the way of the child.

      What is remarkable is that how this woman operates is what I would have expected out of most Americans in the old, old days. But, back then, the only reason to have more kids was to help out on the farms.

      I think it’s safe to assume most people understand this, or at least understand that it‘s not smart to have kids until you’re financially prepared. So, you look at all these bottom-feeders with all these kids and then reasonably conclude that it is intentional. How can these people expect anything from anybody when they intentionally do stupid things???

      It’s absolutely mind-boggling.

      She reminds me of the lady from Miami. “I don’t have to worry about my mortage or paying for gas in my car!” How is that hope and change working for ya? Where is the father of the three kids?       She doesn’t have any money but she can afford to get her hair done. And look at all of those professional photos hanging on her kitchen cabinets in the back ground. I have cut my own hair the past two years, just started cutting my husbands hair, and have TWO 8×10 professional photos in my house. And I darn sure haven’t received MY Obama money. Boo hoo… somebody puhleez feel sorry for me. :-D

      I couldn’t even finish watching it the interview because I was already disgusted after the first 20 seconds. And she’s definitely voting for him in 2012. Idiot.
