U.S. State Department Warns U.S. Citizens in Jerusalem to Avoid Beck Event

In the aftermath of the Glenn Beck “Restoring Courage” rally, questions have emerged about a U.S. State Department message released the day of the event that warned Americans to stay away.U.S. State Department Warns U.S. Citizens in Jerusalem to Avoid Beck Event

The timing and specifics of the event warning have led some to claim that ideological opposition to the Beck event– not just concerns for American safety– could have influenced the decision.

The “Emergency Message” addressed to U.S. Government Employees and  visiting citizens in Jerusalem is available on the Consulate’s website. The message posted to the site on August 24th stated the following:

“The U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem notes that, according to local security sources, Jerusalem is under a heightened Security Alert. The police have established roadblocks in various sections of the city and increased their personnel on the streets. Vehicle inspections are being conducted, and suspicious individuals and bags are receiving further scrutiny.

U.S. citizens in Jerusalem are advised to exercise extra vigilance and avoid large crowds during upcoming rallies and religious holidays, particularly in and around Jerusalem’s Old City.

On Wednesday, August 24, 2011, there will be a rally held near the south east corner of the Old City. The areas between Dung Gate and Lions Gate are off-limits to official U.S. Government personnel from 4:00pm until 10:00pm on that day due to recent clashes in that area.”

So Restoring Courage was off limits on August 24th. Before jumping to any conclusions, though, there are a variety of plausible explanations which should be explored to determine whether any possible bias against the Beck event existed.

As has already been reported on the Blaze, there was indeed an elevated terrorist threat to Jerusalem in the wake of the Eilat attacks that killed 8 Israelis. The U.S. consulate would have had to take this information into account when advising Americans for their safety.

However, The Blaze also reported two days before the Restoring Courage event that Israeli officials had modified the security alert.  The entire country was held steady at a general Level 3 security watch with an “emphasis on Jerusalem and Southern Israel.”  But the “specific alert” for the city of Jerusalem had been lifted.

It is also worth noting that American casualties are rare in Israel, but have occurred. The U.S. Consulate has a grave responsibility to help ensure the safety of Americans in Israel. Emergency safety messages are a necessity, given the history of the region.

In another scenario, however, some are alleging a degree of ideological bias in the decision to ban U.S. government employees and warn off U.S. citizens from attending Beck’s Restoring Courage. They claim it is part of a broader pattern of bias on the part of the Consulate.

In one example, the Jerusalem Post opined earlier this year that the U.S. Consulate has ‘gone native,’ meaning its public activities show a pro-Palestinian bias. The Post argued that because the Consulate is in closer proximity to the Palestinian territories and deals with them more directly than the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv, there is an inclination to favor Palestinian events and causes at the Consulate.

Restoring Courage did not fall into that category.

The Post and others have noted a multitude of Consulate-sponsored Palestinian outreach and cultural events over the past year that appear to outpace any similar offerings for the Jewish community in Jerusalem (or the Christian one, for that matter).

Perhaps it is a division of resources issue, as would be the case in many other countries where the U.S. has both an Embassy and Consulate.

Regardless of that, the August 24th Consulate warning message clearly singled out the Restoring Courage rally for exclusion from other events and gatherings. The reason given was “recent clashes in the area.”

That is a term vague enough that it could be stretched to include verbal sparring between protestors or maybe a few rocks thrown by youths looking to start trouble. But the Blaze has already reported that there were threats made against the event, and there could certainly have been others not publicly disclosed.

So the Consulate, it would seem, can at a minimum claim that security was the only consideration for warning Americans away from Restoring Courage.

Given this background, and allegations of bias, why do you think the Consulate discouraged Americans from attending Beck’s Restoring Courage event?

    The US Consul in Jerusalem and the majority of the employees there are blatant anti-Semites and very insolent. I took down several names of employees and threatened to report them to the State department for the way they treat Jewish US Citizens who come to renew passports, get birth certificates, Social Security Numbers etc.

      I thought his event was sold out soon after it was announced.
      There were no more tickets available. Even if others wanted to attend, they could not.

      If you worked for the government and had tickets to Mr. Beck’s presentation, you could probably have sold them at a profit and used the money leftover to subscribe to My Beck’s online video service. The online service would give you access to content you would not have seen if you attended the event.

      James Sexton was previously employed by the CIA.
      Even if you don’t believe the old adage that “once CIA, always CIA”, Mr. Sexton had to have been exposed to methods of deception and disinformation.

      Glenn’s advertisers abandoned him, then a large fraction of his viewership, then FOX let him go and did not cover the event (still waiting for the Beck “specials” on FOX? You can stop now). Beck was a shooting star that rose to fame and fortune based on his apocalypticworld view, his paranoid interpretation of world events (remember FEMA camps?) and his demonization of virtually every group of people on Earth. His decline has been as spectacular as his rise.

      Assuming he actually is voted out of office. It’s looking more and more like civil unrest is on its way and there is a good chance that elections could be suspended. I have said since the day it was announced our muslim-in-chief was running for the presidency, that if he won, he’d be the last president we ever have. I pray I am wrong, but I think I am correct. Without people getting more involved, those of us on the center and right are simply going to lose. The rabid crazy left knows that they must remain in the spotlight and must be loud, vocal and seen in order to win. That is exactly what they are doing. The only way we are going to beat them is if we start getting involved and quit saying we’re too busy to do _______ (FITB). Once you’ve lost all your freedoms, busy won’t be an issue any longer :(

      We need to start writing to our politicians weekly. If we all do it, it WILL make a difference. We need to attend our local meetings, be it village, city, town, school board or anything else. We need to make our voices heard everywhere — civil and respectful, but firm and knowledgeable. We need to organize our neighbors and friends and start working passionately in unison to put a stop to the madness.

      It’s our choice — we complain and sit it out and see what happens (and most likely not very good), or we do something about it now.

    The consulate has a responsibility to warn US citizens of dangerous situations. The fact that this conspiratorial question even arises is the fact that the current administration HAS shown prior bias against Israel and has a history of hyper-politicizing almost everything. I would give them the benefit of the doubt but HIGHLY suspect that suspicions of political overtones are correct.

      I agree that preparedness is a sound doctrine and the Consulate’s advisement of vague or particular events should be identified to visiting Americans who might not be familiar of the local environment. Conversely, I would be more inclined to support their “responsible action” had they included the fact that 8/24 marked the end of Ramadan (holiest night of the year) and thousands of Muslims would be present in the Temple Mount on the other side of the wall from Restoring Courage event.

      With revelations by Glenn Beck, along with my own research these last three years, I can rationally conclude our State Department has agendas far removed from their intended responsibility. As a Republic and free State, we must stand with Israel in both mind and body.

Also, the Administration in DC has shown marked favoritism towards the Palestinians and may have sent instructions to the consulate to try and lessen the American turnout (just my guess).       Joe- your stupid. I frequent the blaze and I am a woman who does have a Bachelor degree- graduated with honors too. Now, I am working on my Masters. So, I guess you don’t know your demographics.

      That said- I do not make much out of this simply because when we lived in the Middle East we got Warden Messages quite often. Especially when a particular event was going to occur. It just reminds American’s to remain vigilant for their own safety.

      If Clinton can argue the definition of the word “is” in court, I guess we could give the benefit of the doubt to BYSY in the argument over whether the term “your” was used correctly. Yes, in the main, one would likely have meant to say “you’re” in the context of BYSY’s statement. On the other hand, the statement could be viewed as correct in the same manner that “My bad” is viewed as a correct colloquialism. Thus, a Clintonesque court hearing might find one arguing that “your stupid” is equivalent to “your bad.” Case dismissed.

      The two arguments you had were

      “Beck’s career is heading south.”

      And my personal favorite, “Blaze readers, …are just a bunch of old white guys without college degrees.”

      You’re the one trying to claim things that aren’t true- the burden of proof is on you. And, unfortunately you have failed miserably.

      The site in which you provided is quite ambiguous. It didn’t offer any real value for particular demographical groups. It only stated which groups were over represented or under represented based on general internet population.

      Beck’s career is heading south? What’s you basis for that? The 13M he makes a year for his book contracts? Or, the 3M a year for speaking engagements? Oh, I know, it must be the 4M he made from just his website that is ruining his career. Keep in mind- GBTV has even fully started yet. Look for it 09/12. So, the fact that it is doing as well as it is without even having a full program list is quite remarkable.

      And for the last time- what’s your education level?

      The only way the numbers are multiplied is the fact that trolls use several accounts so they can look like more. I’m not an old white guy, don’t make a lot of money, and have 2 years of college (may not be a degree, but it’s college) and if you’re using college as the rule of thumb, most people come out of college raving liberals. I know, my brother-in-law went in a Christian Conservative and came out an Agnostic Liberal who doesn’t vote because it makes no difference to him. At least he doesn’t want kids, either.

      I’m a teacher at a college with a Masters Degree and I am WOMAN! So there. Don’t jump to conclusions about white old men…yes, Beck went south….to Texas. With all my college, I’ve learned more from Beck University and watching him on FOX and taking notes than I did from all my college teaching. I’ve bought all the books he talked about and I feel it is my duty (not at college for fear I’ll get fired) to stay informed. Wish I could put a NOPE bumper sticker on my car, too.

      Loriann- Not everyone who goes to college comes out a raging liberal as I am sure you know. I get your point though because that is what is going on- socialistic indoctrination.

      Kit- I agree with you whole heartrendingly. Beck has taught me a lot and what he didn’t teach, he at least led me in the direction where I could teach myself. I have almost all of the books that he has endorsed. I love it when I take a book out in public and some liberal sees me reading, say, like the Real George Washington. They look at me funny, like I am strange for having any genuine interest in it. We have been reading the new book that Beck has been promoting Michael Vey Prisoner of Cell 26. My son, who is 10, hates reading. But, he LOVES this book. I can’t keep him away from it.

    The best possible light to put on this would be that the State Department was actually concerned for U.S. citizens and understood that this event could very well be a target. I don‘t think that’s unreasonable. The State Department issues warnings like this quite frequently. Sometimes they issue warnings instead of “stay aways,” but I wouldn’t read so much into it unless it were distributed to an unusually large list.

      When has it been safe for a westerner to go to Israel? I think the counsulate was putting an exclamation mark because of Beck’s event. Under the obama regime they tend to support their winners and punish the others. I am biased and I do not trust this current regime.

      This is a common tactic used by the left. It’s called intimidation. The Black Panthers employed this tactic in response to G.B.s’ 8/28 event last year. They threatened to sabotage the event in an effort to diminish the turnout. It didn’t work . They are desperate and it’s evident to me that they are about to snap. I cannot say this often enough. Prepare for the worst. Ammo will be the currency of the next phase. Do NOT become a statistic.

    This is why so many legislators and others who had previously confirmed attendance at Restoring Courage, “backed out” (according to Glenn’s report on the radio show the day after the rally), they were “strongly discouraged” (even in some cases “forbidden”) to go!

    The leaders of my Country do not believe or support or want the United States that I believe in, support and want! They are playing power games and will received that power from Satan himself! Go get it if you must. . . , I will pray for you, I will mourn your loss, and I will want more for you, but I will not give up my God, my beliefs or my friends in this country or Israel for a passing baubble!
