Referendum On Obama: Republican Takes Weiner’s Congressional District

Referendum On Obama: Republican Takes Weiner’s Congresional District
The results of the NY-9 special election have come in: Republican Bob Turner is the winner. The Associated Press reports:

Republicans have scored an upset victory in a House race that became a referendum on President Barack Obama’s economic policies.

Retired media executive and political novice Bob Turner defeated Democratic state Assemblyman David Weprin in a special election Tuesday to succeed Rep. Anthony Weiner, a seven-term Democrat who resigned in June after a sexting scandal.

With about 70 percent of precincts reporting late Tuesday, Turner had 53 percent of the vote to Weprin’s 47 percent.

The heavily Democratic district, which spans parts of Queens and Brooklyn, had never sent a Republican to the House. But frustration with the continued weak national economy gave Republicans the edge.

As reported earlier on The Blaze, one of the key issues impacting the race was the question of Israel.  A plurality of voters said in early polls that Israel was “very important” in determining their votes. Turner has in fact won the Jewish vote which–especially in New York–is a rarity for a Republican candidate.

“This seems to be rooted in deep unhappiness with Obama on this issue–only 30 percent of voters overall approve of how he’s handling Israel to 54 percent who disapprove and with Jewish voters his approval on Israel is 22 percent with 68 of voters disapproving. That has a lot to do with why Turner’s in such a strong position,” said early results of a Public Policy Polling report.

The AP report continues:

The race was supposed to be an easy win for Democrats, who have a 3-1 ratio registration advantage in the district.

Weprin, a 56-year-old Orthodox Jew and member of a prominent Queens political family, seemed a good fit for the largely white, working-class district, which is nearly 40 percent Jewish.

But voter frustration with Obama put Weprin in the unlikely spot of playing defense. A Siena Poll released Friday found just 43 percent of likely voters approved of the president’s job performance, while 54 percent said they disapproved. Among independents, just 29 percent said they approved of Obama’s job performance.

Turner, a 70-year-old Catholic, vowed to push back on Obama’s policies if elected. He received help from prominent Republicans including former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, whose much-praised stewardship of the city after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks was recalled during the 10th anniversary of the attacks last weekend.

The AP story goes on to reinforce the claims made in the Public Policy Polling report:

Weprin became embroiled in New York-centric disputes over Israel and gay marriage, which cost him some support among Jewish voters.

Orthodox Jews, who tend to be conservative on social issues, expressed anger over Weprin’s vote in the Assembly to legalize gay marriage. In July, New York became one of six states to recognize same-sex nuptials.

Former Mayor Ed Koch, a Democrat, endorsed Turner in July as a way to “send a message” to Obama on his policies toward Israel. And Weprin was challenged on his support of a proposed Islamic center and mosque near the World Trade Center site, in lower Manhattan.

The general consensus at this point is this: If a Roman Catholic Republican can take a congressional seat in New York that has been held by Democrats since 1923, anything is possible in 2012.

Stick a fork in it, Obama is well done…

Democrats and talking heads will try to downplay this election, but when a party loses a seat when they have a 3 to 1 party-member advantage and seat that has been Democrat for almost 100 years straight, you know you the Democrat party is in some seriously deep doo doo… It’s IMPOSSIBLE to put a positive spin on this.

Yes, this seat will be eliminated, due to NY’s falling population, which begs the question, “Why are people leaving NY?” This brings you back to the root cause of why the dems lost Weiner’s seat, which is that people are running away from: big government spending, big debts, high taxes, excessive: rules, regulations, mandates, political correctness, the creepy Nanny state, high inflation, high unemployment, loss of freedoms, etc., which are all destroying this country.

People are getting fed up with the consequences of HUGE unconstitutional governments and are looking for some REAL hope and some REAL change and the Democrats are not the party that can deliver this. All big-government liberals can bring is more: debt, inflation, unemployment, loss of liberty, more spending, huge budget deficits, more regulations, rules, mandates….

We The People have had enough of this crap!

Let the Tea Party revolution rock and roll!

There were other issues which separated the two (cue same-sex marriage) and support for Turner from VERY popular (D) Koch. Also recall that NY23 (a VERY red district) going to Bob Owens (D) was supposed to be some HUGE national sign in ‘09….until the 2010 R-takeover occurred. It’s all local. :^)

It really doesn’t matter that a Republic in name only (RINO) has Weiner’s seat (no reference to his sexual orientation implied or pun intended). The people in that district will elect a Democrat next time because they are New Yorkers and feel the rest of the world has to take care of them. Furthermore, I’d be willing to bet that this RINO votes more Dem than Rep…. Just can’t trust Northerners

I’d have to check, but just off the cuff, I think there was a spoiler in that other election & it was also very close. If you added the conservative spoiler’s votes in with the R, the R would have handily beat the D in that race. (If I’m recalling the right one.)

This is a race where the D was well known as a sitting state assemblyman. The R is a businessman new to politics. The D did support gay marriage.

D’s have held this seat since 1923. It’s VERY blue. I think this was a more telling race than the other NY one you’re referencing.

I’m not about the R vs. D, but about the progressive vs. fiscal conservative.

okay, fact check done. I was RIGHT.

That other NY race where the D Bob Owens won had the RINO spoiler (that ugly pig) DScozzafava. She was the establishment candidate (& I think the local R committee cleaned house since then as picking that horrible RINO was their last mistake). She finally stepped out of the race at the last minute, & the RINO pig that she is she endorsed Owens the D. And it was too late to take her stupid name off the ballot; so she spilt the vote between the Owens & the BEST CANDIDATE, Doug Hoffman. When you combine Doug‘s I votes with Scozzafava’s R votes, the total swept Owens away.

So yes every race is local. But THAT race is another example that the electorate – even in a BLUE state like NY – does NOT want your liberal progressive government.

      Nice try though.

I was polite before because I didn’t recognize you as the far left troll, & I am tired of being polite to the rude (& fact-less) lying liberals.

      Turner no Hooch
Republican Bob Turner handily won Anthony Weiner’s old Queens/Brooklyn seat in New York’s Ninth Congressional District last night, defeating Democrat Bob Weprin. Weprin didn’t live in the district, but, hey, he’s Jewish. That was supposed to impress the district’s Jewish voters, but somehow it wasn’t enough. The JTA reports on the race here; Steve Hayward comments on the race here. William Jacobson stayed up late to deliver the news and captured the comment of the night: “I wonder if the Dems want to go back to the pre-1967 borders of NY 9.” As that comment suggests, the anomalous outcome of the race can be accounted for by the voters’ attitude to Barack Obama.
In the other special election last night, Republican Mark Amodei crushed Democrat Kate Marshall in Nevada’s Second Congressional District. According to the Hill, a Democrat had never represented the district, but the margin of the race can only be explained by the same factor that accounts for the outcome in NY-9: Obama. I believe that Nevada’s Second is only about as Republican as New York’s Ninth is Democratic.

Does the Obama administration really believe that it has found the key to political recovery in a fight over son of Stimulus? Or is it peddling a line to a compliant press? I don’t think that the administration’s self-delusion has reached this level, though there is ground to debate the point. When it comes down to it, team Obama will not be counting on winning

      TIFOSA…….
That’s what I meant in the above statement. You don’t know enough to have an intelligent discussion with.
You have no ‘base line’ of knowledge about freedom. You have no idea of what ‘equal results’ means to people’s freedom.
Have you any knowledge of all the socialist states (country’s) that have failed and why?
Let me explain it to you.
Hippies ‘dropped out’ of society to form ‘communes’ back in the late 60′s.
They would all ‘share’ in the fruits of their labor, everyone would be equal, and no one would be hungry.
Everything would be shared by all. Everything!
Some started to realize they could share in the fruits, even if they did not do their share of work.
Others resented this, as the burden to provide for the lazy became an unfair one for the hardworking members.
Also, these lazy members would not care for the children of the members who were out in the fields doing the work. Some were even abused.
      The communes eventually failed.
They were called ‘communes’ because those hippies thought ‘Communism’ (equal results) was the way to go.
Love Obama and the Dems if you will, but this will be the result.

He hates the Costtuion which limits BIG Government, He will protect an Owl and fish at cost of letting farmers irrigate thier land, He takes OUR tax dollars and gives them to Brazil instead of letting our oill companies drill fo our own Oil, In short he hates America and wants us all to be SOCIALIST.

Instead of passing the “petulant child’s” latest stimulas package, they need to force him to remove the regulations that are causing jobs to go away. Call out Obama’s policies concerning the EPA and drilling for gas and oil, his tax policies, etc. Shout it from the roof tops, explain it in college newpapers, find the outlets that reach the people who aren’t informed or who are misinformed. For every penny they give Obama, there needs to be a regulation lifted (maybe a slight exaggeration), and they should call him out as ‘not wanting to help minorities, single mothers, starving children’, if he won’t do it.

      what has he taken?

He took the CEO of GM, and replaced with his own man.

He took freedom to decide if you want healthcare, and took a whole lot of our hard earned tax money.

He took many soldiers and sent to Afghanistan for his so called “surge”. It has got us no where.

He took away strength from our military, when he allowed the sodomites to openly serve

so, Ken (What I’m so worried about is there going to be anything left by the time he leaves) is worried that there’ll be no money, military might, freedom to…something…left? Zero evidence of communism/socialism/marxism so far. Capitalism has flourished, in fact. Jobs overseas pay when there are tax incentives (pre-Obama) for such.

He took the power of the federal courts by thumbing his nose at several of their rulings. He took our system of checks and balances by bypassing congress at every turn. He took the voice of the people away when he passed several historically gigantic, freedom robbing, unconstitutional bills and called the American people racists and liars because they didn’t want those bills.

Isn’t that a psychological disorder??? More than one personality?

Also, liberals obsessing over conservatives (what are they saying? what are they doing? OMG how much money do they have? It’s mine! it should be mine!!) Is that also a psychological disorder – a mental illness or just an emotional disorder??? I haven’t figured it out yet. (But I will!) I do know jealousy & insecurity are involved.

What has Obama taken TIFOSA? He’s taken one sixth of the economy with Obamacare. For all intents and purposes he‘s taken over GM to keep union contracts intact where they’d have had to have been renegotiated if the company took a structured bankruptcy. And how that Chevy Volt working out for you? Oh and GM paid back it’s bailout..with TARP money.
He’s taken 535 million dollars of tax payer money and thrown it at a “green” pipe dream called Solyndra..which has collapsed. The Bush Administration found that Solyndra did no warrant the loan.
He’s taken inspector generals from cases that involve his friends when the heat was getting too hot.
He took his time during the gulf spill to make sure the damage was significant enough to “warrant” putting a moritorium on all offshore drilling. When a court overturned that decision…he ignored it. He took away drillion company jobs and rights.
Want more TIFOSA..we‘ve got a whole litany of what Obama’s been taking away.

Because they let the mob think for them, just like blacks. Why would a black person be associated with the party of Racists? Why would a Jew be associated with the party of anti-Semitic policies? For Blacks: they fell for the insincere rhetoric and social program freebies in exchange for their vote to keep the racists in power. For Jews: they just wanted to prove that they weren’t the Zionist evil that, ironically the Democrats, constantly accuse them of being.

Now the cat is out of the bag. Blacks, for the most part are Marxist and justify that with their past victimhood, which they will never let go of because it’s worked so well for them. Jews, on the other hand, just had a big wake up call from the anti-messiah Obamao. Interesting that Blacks still want to live on a plantation, albeit a government plantation, but Jews do not wish to be mass murdered again.

What is the definition of insanity?

But if Turner does win, it will be the second sign that this country (dems included) is fed up with liberal politics and ready for the Republicans (adults) to take over and make the necessary adjustments (albeit a daunting task) to get us headed in the right direction.
