NEW YORK (The Blaze/AP) — Veteran broadcaster Regis Philbin is retiring from his weekday talk show.
Philbin made the announcement at the start of Tuesday morning’s “Live With Regis and Kelly,” which he has hosted for more than a quarter-century, most recently sharing hosting duties with Kelly Ripa.
Philbin said he would be stepping down from the show around the end of the summer, but he didn’t specify a departure date.
“I don’t want to alarm anybody,” he began, then declared, “This will be my last year on the show.
“It’s been a long time. It’s been 28 years,” he continued, “and it was the biggest thrill of my life to come back to New York, where I grew up as a kid watching TV in the early days, you know, never even dreaming that I would one day have the ability, or whatever it takes, to get in front of the camera and talk to it. …
“There is a time that everything must come to an end for certain people on camera – especially certain old people!” cracked Philbin, who is 79.
“I think I can only speak for America and all of us here,” responded Ripa, “when I say it has been a pleasure and a privilege and a dream come true. And I wish I could do something to make you change your mind.”
“Now wait a minute,” Philbin said slyly.
Nothing was said about the future of the show after Philbin’s exit, or what the future holds for Ripa, who is currently marking a decade as Philbin’s co-host. However, a story on ABC, the network that hosts the show, said the Disney-ABC Television Group plans to name a new personality to join Ripa, an indication that the show will go on.

Posted on January 19, 2011 at 9:37amRegis could be replaced by any piece of roadkill,it would have twice the talent and 20 times the intelligence. The fact that Americans continue to watch such inane drivel shames the entire country. Good riddance Regis!!!

Posted on January 18, 2011 at 11:11amWill miss Regis. He is the last of the decent, respectable entertainment talk-show hosts on-air now and can not be replaced. But, understand and wish him all the best. Regis is a class act! Wish there were more like him.

Posted on January 18, 2011 at 10:31amRegis is a warm, happy and humble man.. who happened to make a good living being himself. Whether you watched his show or not (I’ve only seen it maybe 5 times), why would you begrudge such a person?
I really had no idea that he was 79 years old.. and he deserves to take a break.. however long he wishes to. But seeing his absolute desire to make people smile, I can not help but believe that of course, he will be back, on special occasions, to do, just that.
The world is a better, kinder place, albeit just a little.. because of him. Is there anyone who would suggest otherwise?
PS: I believe that Kelly, even more so than Kathie Lee.. is his equal, in all those regards.

Posted on January 18, 2011 at 10:14amThere seems to be mixed feelings about this, which is very good. It shows that not everyone has the same opinion about something, which makes life kind of blan. I only watched the show a few times and he seems nice, just let the guy step down with some pride. :D

Posted on January 18, 2011 at 10:02amI’m all for giving proper respect to those who have worked for their success. Yeah, at 79 I believe we can watch Regis step down with dignity. I can‘t watch the New Year’s Eve hoopla with Dick Clark anymore. It’s painfully ridiculous. I will be surprised if Clark isn‘t wheeled out as a corpse with all the fakes pretending like he’s A-okay. Every now and again the producers can run a jolt of electricity thru the corpse to get it jerk at the proper moment. Anybody remember Carson’s retirement? That‘s how it’s done. Know when enough is enough and go out as a legend. Hell, maybe this could give Brett Favre something to do… the show I mean. “Mr. Favre, no means no!”

Posted on January 18, 2011 at 12:04pmWhat’s with all the negative and ridiculous comments. People lighten up. I agree our country is going through rough times and such but you people act like everything that is posted on this website needs to be about the decline of our country. This man gave decades of his life to TV entertainment whether you watched his show or not. Is there really a reason to ridicule this man?
I’m shocked at the way this man has been treated on this website. I would have expected so much more. Regis was a fun loving guy for so many people and a man they grew up listening to or watching. Judging by some of the posts on the website some people are just down right arrogant. Grow up already.

“This man” was paid handsomely “decades of his life to TV entertainment whether you watched his show or not. Is there really a reason to ridicule this man?”
So we can have a little fun and express our opinion. Anything wrong with that?
