Posted on October 11, 2010 at 1:45pmRepublic vs. Democracy
Rule by Law vs. Rule by Majority
Just after the completion and signing of the Constitution, in reply to a woman’s inquiry as to the type of government the Founders had created, Benjamin Franklin said, “A Republic, if you can keep it.”
Not only have we failed to keep it, most don’t even know what it is.
A Republic is representative government ruled by law (the Constitution). A democracy is direct government ruled by the majority (mob rule). A Republic recognizes the inalienable rights of individuals while democracies are only concerned with group wants or needs (the public good).
Lawmaking is a slow, deliberate process in our Constitutional Republic requiring approval from the three banches of government, the Supreme Court and individual jurors (jury-nullification). Lawmaking in our unlawful democracy occurs rapidly requiring approval from the whim of the majority as determined by polls and/or voter referendums. A good example of democracy in action is a lynch mob. A more recent example was the failure of the US Senate to uphold their oath “to do impartial justice” and remove bill clinton from office. Those Senators should be removed themselves, for failure to uphold their oath and for aiding and abetting a known criminal. If you would like to help remove them, E-mail me.
Democracies always self-destruct when the non-productive majority realizes that it can vote itself handouts from the productive minority by electing the candidate promising the most benefits from the public treasury. To maintain their power, these candidates must adopt an ever-increasing tax and spend policy to satisfy the ever-increasing desires of the majority. As taxes increase, incentive to produce decreases, causing many of the once productive to drop out and join the non-productive. When there are no longer enough producers to fund the legitimate functions of government and the socialist programs, the democracy will collapse, always to be followed by a Dictatorship.
Even though nearly every politician, teacher, journalist and citizen believes that our Founders created a democracy, it is absolutely not true. The Founders knew full well the differences between a Republic and a Democracy and they repeatedly and emphatically said that they had founded a republic.
Article IV Section 4, of the Constitution “guarantees to every state in this union a Republican form of government”…. Conversely, the word Democracy is not mentioned even once in the Constitution. Madison warned us of the dangers of democracies with these words,
“Democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths…”,
“We may define a republic to be … a government which derives all its powers directly or indirectly from the great body of the people, and is administered by persons holding their offices during pleasure for a limited period, or during good behavior. It is essential to such a government that it be derived from the great body of the society, not from an inconsiderable proportion or a favored class of it; otherwise a handful of tyrannical nobles, exercising their oppressions by a delegation of their powers, might aspire to the rank of republicans and claim for their government the honorable title of republic.” James Madison, Federalist No. 10, (1787)
“A wise man will not leave the right to the mercy of chance, nor wish it to prevail through the power of the majority. There is but little virtue in the action of masses of men.” Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)
Our military training manuals used to contain the correct definitions of Democracy and Republic. The following comes from Training Manual No. 2000-25 published by the War Department, November 30, 1928.
DEMOCRACY:
* A government of the masses.
* Authority derived through mass meeting or any other form of “direct” expression.
* Results in mobocracy.
* Attitude toward property is communistic–negating property rights.
* Attitude toward law is that the will of the majority shall regulate, whether is be based upon deliberation or governed by passion, prejudice, and impulse, without restraint or regard to consequences.
* Results in demogogism, license, agitation, discontent, anarchy.
REPUBLIC:
* Authority is derived through the election by the people of public officials best fitted to represent them.
* Attitude toward law is the administration of justice in accord with fixed principles and established evidence, with a strict regard to consequences.
* A greater number of citizens and extent of territory may be brought within its compass.
* Avoids the dangerous extreme of either tyranny or mobocracy.
* Results in statesmanship, liberty, reason, justice, contentment, and progress.
* Is the “standard form” of government throughout the world.
The manuals containing these definitions were ordered destroyed without explanation about the same time that President Franklin D. Roosevelt made private ownership of our lawful money (US Minted Gold Coins) illegal. Shortly after the people turned in their $20 gold coins, the price was increased from $20 per ounce to $35 per ounce. Almost overnight F.D.R., the most popular president this century (elected 4 times) looted almost half of this nation’s wealth, while convincing the people that it was for their own good. Many of F.D.R.’s policies were suggested by his right hand man, Harry Hopkins, who said,
“Tax and Tax, Spend and Spend, Elect and Elect, because the people are too damn dumb to know the difference”.

He contributes frequently to left leaning TV programs including Olberman and others. Nevertheless, what he said has some merit. I do question his statement that the government may collapse due to a lack of confidence in it. If he is implying that we are ready to throw our hands up and quit, then why was the tea party/movement created and why the big push by both parties to get people out to vote? We are being Cloward and Pivined and the progressives are concerned that we might actually succeed in wresting control from them and pull off restoring the U.S. to a functioning free republic.

There should be a flat tax of around 11% (according to the Laffer Curve this would be the most productive rate) and this should be for everyone.
Stop punishing people who are successful by creating more and more taxes all the while looking to bail out anyone who decides they cant pay bills, mortgages, car notes, etc.
Change is coming, and its coming in just about 2 weeks……..

Posted on October 11, 2010 at 1:29pmProfessor Reich,
I agree with you about the corrupting force of well-connected, big-money donors from outside of the political district. I would like to see it end. However, it is NOT just from corporations.
Need some evidence? Just look those billionaires, corporations, and unions funding the anti-democratic California Proposition 27, whose aim is to eliminate citizen control over redistricting and return it to the California Legislature. The California Legislature is dominated by one political party with a nearly 2-to-1 majority. Common Cause itself is against Proposition 27.
So who is funding support for Proposition 27?
* Self-serving incumbent politicians from only one political party
* Rich, well-connected, big-money donors to one political party
* Special interests that are also big-money donors pimarily to only one political party
* Various groups seeking to protect their multi-million dollar investment in California’s politicians-for-hire
Professor Reich, do you see a problem with Proposition 27, or are you also blinded by party loyalty?

His rhetoric is left, likely far left Progressivism, as he struggles to kidnap a movement he does not embrace or understand. He does understand he is up against a powerful surge at times measuring more than 60 %. We are increasingly hard to ignore, spin or dismiss. Attempting kidnapping is in part admission all their previous attempts have failed. Twisted logic from an over educated, callused mind, under callused hands, is a last ditch effort. The strategy worked in 08 but will fail in 10. We have moved on, they regress to strategy destined to fail.
AngryTexanFromAmarillo your point is well made about our Republic. These twisted minds will never make honest appeal to our Declaration, Independence, our Founding Parents or American Exceptionalism. They do not own or believe in these essential American documents, people and persuasions. With out these essentials, the tea party cannot be understood.
On further reflection, I ponder if he primarily wishes to stop the bleed by a backdoor attempt to join our rage. If so, he walks on thinning ice that will melt to greater bleed.

The Fed is now the largest holder of U.S. debt second only to China. Strap in folks, this is going to be a wild ride and there are no brakes!

Posted on October 11, 2010 at 2:18pmThe claim is that the books contained classified information: troop locations, officer names, special ops locations and strategy etc. If that’s true, the publisher could be prosecuted after the DoD told them the book included classified info.
Does the book contain classified information? The DoD (that’s our military folks, not Obama) does, and thought the information would endanger troops; i.e. get Americans killed.
Kind of silly to destroy books in the electronic age. But what I don’t see in the posts here is any concern for our troops. Is that the conservative position? Or are you assuming the military is lying just to… just for fun.

You are so correct that HuffPo deletes accounts as I have posted on that site twice contesting a liberal point of view with my conservative one. I call no one names and don’t use profanity and STILL was deleted TWICE. Gotta love the pots calling the kettles black….(if I put that on HuffPo, I would construed as a racist for using black in any context).
I think we should all bombard HuffPo with a conservative wave to show how long it would take to delete all of our accounts. I, myself, am already writing the paper to let them know their actions are obviously trying to dispel any confrontation of thought and common sense.

Report Post »I am no fan of Obama by any stretch, but I have a few questions about the book Operation Dark Heart.
If the original version of the book makes the case the Bush administration knew about the 9/11 attacks beforehand. Why would Obama repress this information? Obama blames Bush for everything, why now would he protect him? Something did happen with this book that is very odd; I am just not sure what really happened. I would welcome any more information about this subject.

The liberals destroyed the economy, they created the monster govt that receives billions in bribes and influence from foreigners-in-spirit like George Soros. They have pushed communism and big govt control of everything and they think the tea party might join them?
ROFL – this mental midget is blind to his own marxist views.
We hate the whole bunch of big govt social engineers and their “protect us from ourselves” smarter than us attitude. The Axe is coming. The communists have shown their hand and we free people realize we will never be safe until big govt is destroyed.
We must cut washington down to size.

“The DoD (that’s our military folks, not Obama)”.
Last time I looked Obama is the Commander in Chief which makes him very much part of the military.
You liberals are so blinded by hatred of conservatives you just cant stand the truth.

Posted on October 11, 2010 at 5:03pm@FreedomofSpeech. That would be unfair, if you think the top 1% create 23.5% of the country’s economic output. Whilst capitalism is the best economic system it is not perfect and some do benefit from its structure far greater than others. It is not a question of punishing those that have been economically successful but rather being a realist and realising that some people can pay more without harshly infringing their financial wellbeing whilst others are not so well placed. Conservatism is, supposedly, more realistic than liberalism, which has many idealistic holes, so I am not sure why such minimal tax gradients are not appreciated.

Posted on October 11, 2010 at 5:53pmWith six of the last seven presidents working so closely with “the globalists”, through the tri-lateral commission; and with 40+ years of progressiveism eating at our system, we’ll be lucky to get out of this mess with our souls. All politics is a diversion, now. The real threat IS the globalist cabal that OWNS, that’s right, OWNS, the Federal Reserve Bank. Especially, since, I learned, today, that the Fed, now, owns more of our debt than China. At least with China owning the lion’s share, they acted like a buffer between us and the new world order.
Report Post »The government now is liable to increase printing American dollars, to make our dollars even more worthless. They think they can beat the system with inflation. It’s been tried before, and of course, it failed. Tim Geitner is a Judas goat. .

Posted on October 12, 2010 at 12:06pmMax, I’m with you on this issue of Global Governance. These folks are brilliant long term strategists. They have both the GOP and DP in their palms. Just pull the ropes differently depending on party in power. This is why the Tea Party is a MAJOR movement.. it is NOT just for the USA but for liberty throughout the globe. The Tea Party must EXPAND ITS MISSION AND VISION. Accept the challenge that we are parttnership with God. This is what Glenn is trying to teach us.
