Reid, Angle Supporters Duke it Out During Senate Debate

It was supposed to be a spirited, yet civil, Nevada Senatorial debate at a local Lutheran high school between Sharron Angle and Harry Reid. But the pol’s supporters instead took center stage during a debate that ended up resembling a ring-side pay-per-view event.
“Nevada Senate Forum Turns Raucous, Ends in Fist Fight,” was the headline in National Review. “Brawl erupts at Reid, Angle election forum,” read a Las Vegas paper. The local Fox affiliate said that “it wasn’t just the candidates exchanging jabs.”
But however one describes it, what happened at the end of the Reid, Angle Senate debate was surprising. According to NR’s Elizabeth Crum, the crowd was mostly “respectful and fairly reserved” while Reid answered questions via pre-taped video (he did not physically attend the debate). But after Reid finished, the real fireworks began. Crum, who attended the event, explains what happened:
That changed once Angle appeared. Most of the 800-member audience jumped to their feet, half of them cheering, half loudly booing as she and the moderator took the stage. Even once all were seated and Angle began to speak, many in the crowd were quite boisterous and some became increasingly bold and uncivil as the event continued.
Angle was repeatedly shouted at as she tried to answer questions. Scornful remarks, sarcastic questions, and accusations including “Liar!” were shouted by Reid partisans. The moderator politely asked for order, twice, but it had little effect on the more raucous members of the crowd.
At one point, the moderator admonished the audience and said shouting and applause cut into Angle’s speaking time. A few people then deliberately continued clapping and making comments to prevent Angle from saying anything. To her credit, Angle stayed composed and continued speaking even when as many as 30 or 40 audience members were shouting all at once.
As Angle was giving her closing statements, some Reid supporters stood up and began to leave. An Angle and Reid supporter exchanged angry remarks which drew in others and led to a punch being thrown. This led to a shouting match as witnesses on both sides argued about the situation, and two security guards pushed through the small crowd in order to break up the situation.
All attendees were asked not to applaud or shout for either candidate — a direction that was reportedly ignored to some extent by both sides.
“He punched me twice, so I punched him back twice,” Kay Mehta — a possible victim — told the Las Vegas Review Journal as she nursed a red, tearing eye and waited for police to arrive. “I was just defending myself.”
No arrests were made at the time.

I blame the organizers of the event for doing otherwise. This is a sad spectacle, and Harry Reid should apologize to Sharon Angle for the bad behavior of his supporters. It should also serve as a lesson to conservatives that we need to rise above these actions and be respectful to all. We must be wary of being drawn into physical confrontations like this one and abusive arguing. If we fall for it, we play right into the progressives’ hands.

Some of it’s local, some national. But it’s the left doing what they do to gain power. It must be exposed far and wide.

Then, in a show of disrespect, the Reid supporters start walking out during her closing remarks, which would have bee disruptive to those in the audience that wanted to hear her remarks, and wind up punching a woman to boot. The party of tolerance does not describe the Democrat party. They are the party of intolerance, innuendo, smears, violence and any other means of stopping honest debates on any issues. They don’t have facts to back up their agenda, so they try to shut up those who disagree with them and try to point out their errors. Herr(y) needs to go along with Comrade Peloski and all of the other progressives that are ruining our country.

Seriously though, it is unfortunate. Know this, that the left will not leave peacefully. Unfortunately, there will be violence from the left as they lose power. You see it in Greece, Europe, and other places. When it comes to restoring the republic from the plutocracy that it has become the elite will rile up the rank and file to “take what is rightfully theirs”. I know that is a far cry from what happened in this debate, but I think it is symbolic of what what we will see develop in the years to come.

Why don’t you check out the less right-wing-biased outlets before concluding you have all the fact. Their reports suggest that both sides were unruly. The problem in this country is that people don’t interract with the other side anymore, read opposing points of view or confront problems with their own ideas and party. As a result, it is easy to vilify the other. This leads to the end of civility and the end of progress in this country. Want to help your country? Put country over politics. Put solutions over ideology. Admit that the GOP/Dem party doesn’t have all the answers. That conservativesliberals are not always right. Show respect to the other side. Focus on the numbers, where biased opinions cannot hide behind rhetoric. Show respect for process and be willing to compromise and acquiesce to the results of such a process. That is what this country used to do. But no more. Now we live in fantasy worlds constructed by only watching and reading that which confirms what we think or believe to be true, but which is far from the empirical reality. Unfortunately, most people blogging here (or on Kos) are incapable of that. Enjoy this time. The luxury of being able to live in a fantasy will come to an end in our lifetime, and it won’t be the Muslims or commies that did us in. Our sad fate lies not in them, nor in our stars, but in ourselves.

ABC, I have a lifetime of watching ABC, CBS, NBC and later in life, CNN. I grew tired of getting my news through a liberal filter. In other words, if the story helped the liberal agenda it was reported with great enthusiasm. When the story helped conservatives, the story was reported with a liberal slant or ignored completely. I can tell if a story is written by the Associated Press. When reporting on liberals, their catalog of words are very flattering. When reporting on conservatives, they resort to words that are loaded with negative associations, e.g. ELF members are “activists” while Tea Party members are “insurgents.”
I quit watching Dan Rather in the 70′s. This was after I noticed a peculiar facial expression after reporting stories that hurt Republicans. He grinned. Every time. I started telling others and they saw it, too. They said they never realized it until I mentioned it.
I DO get my news through other sources when I am interested in seeing how the left will report a story. For example, CBS reported 87,000 attended the 828 Restoring Honor rally. To their credit, MSNBC reported much larger numbers.
I can’t speak for everyone, but you will find there are MANY like me who are not as closed minded as you perceive us to be.

In one row, Angle supporters were setting on the left side, Reid supporters on the right. The same group of folks who heckled Angle during her entire 30 minutes were the folks involved. When Angle was giving her closing remarks, this group stood up to leave. Instead of moving out to the aisle on their side, the opted to move out to the opposite aisle thereby having to cross in front of the Angle supporters. The elderly gentleman in question and his wife stood up to block them from leaving. Woman #1 kicked the wife and shoved her down in her seat, when the elderly gentleman reproached her she reached out to shove him and slap him. He blocked. She then tried a second time at which point he grabbed her arm. When he did that, Woman #2 jumped in and started pushing, shoving and hitting him. That’s when he started punching them in the face. If it were me, I gotta say, I’d do the same. Of course when the LSM arrived they immediately interviewed the hulking women who went right into victim mode and claimed they were defending themselves. Got to love the old man. When asked why he punched the women in the face he replied “Because I didn’t have a baseball bat.”

If Ladybugstx’s post is accurate (which I have no reason to doubt), the older couple were justified in fighting back. Regardless of the facts of the events, incidents like this will be twisted and distorted to promote the image that Conservatives and Tea Partiers are the violent ones. We, as a group, need to take the higher road and not stoop to the Left’s level.
Be calm, be rational and be non-violent. Meaningful change is coming is we can just stay the course.
