Reid Fights Obama: Earmarks Are ‘What We’re Supposed to Do’

Despite public support for a ban on unquestioned earmarks, the politicians in Washington aren‘t ready to give up their grasp on the nation’s purse strings:

Washington Times reports:

Preparing for a final showdown on the massive $1.1 trillion spending bill, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid defended the thousands of earmarks in the measure as the basic function of Congress.

“That’s our job. That‘s what we’re supposed to do,” Mr. Reid, Nevada Democrat, said as he chastised fellow senators who, while having requested pork-barrel spending earlier this year, are now decrying their inclusion in the spending bill.

Mr. Reid challenged those senators to voluntarily agree to strip their own earmarks out of the bill, and said so far, nobody has taken him up on that.

I think I am now going to take a Christmas break from all this, I mean I think I can no longer take any more of this wretched cockroach Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Barack Obama, or the rest of these socialist scum from the gutters. One day they will all be gone and forgotten like a rotten egg. Merry Christmas to one and all with the exception of all those traitors in the Liberal Progressive Socialist Party (formerly the Democratic Party). See ya;ll next year. God bless all American Patriots and a special blessing for all our men and women in uniform. See ya’ll in 2011 after the cockroaches are gone from the Senate and House. He has been a liar and a thief for so long he thinks it’s just the normal thing to do. Quite honestly he probably truly believes he’s doing nothing wrong (just like Charlie Wrangle). With that being said I must also add that that is not entirely true. They have a hint that what they do is wrong but you know, it‘s the way it’s always been done. Right? Now the difference between him and every body else is that after so many people overwhelmingly rejected he and his parties ideals he still cannot comprehend that he is doing something wrong. A normal person would probably realize real quickly that something ain’t right. He is what you might say is suffering from “Lacko-Comprehenda”. He can’t understand that things have changed.” Business as usual is over or soon will be. It has to be. There is nothing left in the deck to deal..

You also notice how Harry is sounding more and more like a combatant with Obama. They smell that Obama’s political life is near its end and are doing everything they can to distance themselves from the man that they once decried as their and the countries savior.

I gotta say, someone has got to change the way the comments section is set up. You’ll notice here on the blaze, the 1st comment is typically the most irrelevant yet has the most responses. HUH?

Do nothing, go home. I’ll take of it all= 12 responses and counting? HUH?
Seems some people are so busy trying to be the first poster they tend not to bother with the story and then you get a “Do nothing, go home. I’ll take care of it all comment.

It also appears that the majority do not believe most of you will bother reading all the post, just the first page. Therefore only comment on the first few, most irrelevant comments.

It would certainly be refreshing if the blaze would have a comment section that would allow for a comment on a specific post so that we can bury the irrelevant, useless, uninformed posters (there is alot of em here if anyone pays attention) and move to the more educated, thought out post and comment on them.

For the first poster on this and many other articles here on the blaze. You’ve been givin a platform tp express your thoughts on a multitude of subjects.

I guess this website is trying to conceal the utter hypocrisy of Republicans on the issue of earmarks. Watch this, it’s only two minutes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PF9nl66i6ro

Republicans are against earmarks on national news, then brag about getting them in their own districts, Republicans were against the stimulus, then had news events with oversized checks showing the money they’d gotten for their states, Republicans are against raising taxes for the rich, yet laud Reaganomics, even thought taxes were far high then than now, Republicans are all about lowering the deficit, although they sure weren’t under Bush nor have they proposed any concrete measures to reduce it since.

They are for one thing: and that’s to get voted back into office. They are hypocritically shoveling the crap, and everyone here buys it, hook, line and sinker.

Congress will be dissolved, and a new Congress, and senate will be established!! NOADAZONE don’t fall victim to the hype. Our food supply is not cut by 1/3 because of ethanol. It’s supply and demand. White corn for many years brought more $ than yellow/field/feed corn. Then for some reason the price was no better than feed corn, yet the yield was less. This means the farmer makes less money per acre. The field corn/yellow is separated into groups of food grade, feed grade (for livestock), high oil etc. Ethanol doesn’t take up that much of it. Feed grade goes to cattle and hogs, which ends up in your grocery store.

The farmer is taxed for every bushel of corn he sells, and taxed a second time on the income he makes from every bushel, taxed on the ground used to raise the corn, taxed on the vehicle he uses to haul the corn to market, and taxed (through personal property tax) on every piece of equipment it takes to plant and harvest the corn.

You just can’t believe all the figures the government throws at you.

He is right on one point. Earmarks are legal for them to provide. HOwever, The Republicans CHOOSE to not use them because the last election was a mandate by the people to get our BUDGET under control and stop the waste. Some of the provisions that Harry the @sswipe Reid mentioned where put into the bill before the election and the pledge to not have ear marks. The Dem Statist machine kept them in the bill in the hope of making the Republicans look like liars. Notice that the largest of the earmarks benefit Republicans. The republicans now pledge to not vote for this bill in its CURRENT form.
Harry all ya got to do is take out the crap and spend less and reduce costs. I have a feeling that you won your relection via fraud at the polls.. (How many dead zombies voted for you ?)

Truly, we’re learning quite a bit from the libs.
The way the MSM have gone after Palin shows us we can’t trust their objectivity anymore.
The libs gave the country Obama and now everyone understands that elections have consequences.

Anyone knowledgeable enough, or brave enough, to speak out in opposition will not be welcomed. Often they are told from the podium, “We don’t have time to discuss that now,“ or ”We discussed that on another date,” or “We can discuss that after the meeting.” They will attempt to quiet, isolate, and discredit dissenters. After attending the Delphi meeting, participants may feel uneasy that they are in disagreement with the apparent majority. The Delphi technique is often successful in bluffing people into submission. Don’t let them succeed. Call their bluff.

@SNAPPERHEAD – You are just one of the suckers born every minute who the Republicans rely on carry elections. You post that “Republicans choose not to use earmarks.” Are you simple, or do you not even watch Fox news? The Omnibus bill under consideration is filled with pork from Republicans. Even FOX challenged Cornyn for complaining loud and long about pork while the current bill has millions of dollars in pork for his state ($16,000,000). Same with Mitch McConnall ($5,650,000 he requested).

I don’t know whether to be disgusted with people like you or feel pity. One thing I do know, is that the Republican party is right in your face saying one thing and doing the opposite.

“Republicans choose not to use earmarks.” Complete utter lie. But you know what they say: Garbage in, garbage out. And you are the perfect example.

Reid filed to have a cloture vote about the anti-American DREAM Act amnesty on Saturday, and all this site cares about is relatively minor pork?

The DREAMAct will not only increase social spending, it will give the free-spending Dems and the far-left even more power. Ignoring it now will increase your taxes later and will also reduce your political power.

Let me suggest making that a higher priority than pork. For the details on the bill and what you can do, see:

      jzs;

I check out your video. Ok, Republicans (the progressive variety) inserted earmarks. The left-leaning media attempts to make it look like it is a republican disease. The FACT is that democrats created the bill, and inserted republican earmarks in order to allow the media to pillory them. Do me a favor, return to the mainline (as in drugs) media and leave us alone.

      @Dont ****** Me Bro

Thanks, and it just goes to show, disagree or not, we all start getting along at some point. I live out west and we are very independent, I can even get my own food outside of the supermarket. We have to start balancing our budgets and now is the time to start. Congress “Repubs and Dems” STOP SPENDING OUR MONEY.

Event though they say, Pork is only 8 Billion, if the member of congress aren’t paying it out of their own pockets, it is coming out of our childrens, mine, yours and the Chinese.

If I walk up to someone on the street, take their wallet, and only take 50% of their money, am I giving them a Tax Cut by letting them keep 50%? Or would I go to jail for stealing.

Congress needs to understand, they are stewards of our tax money, it is not their personnel reelection funds or payoff accounts.

You have cut me to the quick. Still I see my faith that my meaning was clear to most who are more familiar with the article than others, was not betrayed by brevity. As for the typo, well perfection eludes us all does it not?

      From Shakespeare’s Hamlet, 1602:

      “LORD POLONIUS
      This business is well ended.
My liege, and madam, to expostulate
What majesty should be, what duty is,
Why day is day, night night, and time is time,
Were nothing but to waste night, day and time.
Therefore, since brevity is the soul of wit,
And tediousness the limbs and outward flourishes,
I will be brief: your noble son is mad:
Mad call I it; for, to define true madness,
What is’t but to be nothing else but mad?
      But let that go”

As for the many replies to my comment that you correctly noted were seemingly unrelated to the subject matter, at least as I posed it, in the vernacular of the habitual offenders, it’s called “piggy backing” and I consider it a most admirable communist virtue.

Although I’m not pleased with either party, at least the Republicans show a pair… First the Democrats, starting with Barack Obama himself, caved on the Bush Tax Cuts; and now they’ve just caved on their monstrosity of a Spending bill…

Politicians are better than us regular folk, remember? I would love to witness these criminals being literally thrown out of office onto the Capital steps, along with their furniture, papers, and all the other crap they brought with them. They spend OUR money on stuff that is solely designed to get them re-elected, nothing more. Self-serving, opportunistic pigs!

Thanks again, Nevada. You should just dissolve your border with California and secede. Instead of continuing to run the US into the ground, let President Reid and VP Boxer decide how to spend the money of Calivada… ooops, I forgot – you don’t have any.

Why is Reid concerned with power? I think this fixation with power has corrupted his view of why he is there. Yes, we all understand that you are supposed to fight for your state by improving commerce throughout. The problem is that Reid and his fellow Dems haven’t gotten the message from November 2nd and will not get it until they are ousted…..STOP THE SPENDING! I think our elected SERVANTS should be looking for cuts to make instead of spending. Also, “congressional spending” doesn’t need to be associated with other bills and should be voted on individually to allow a vote and transparency of that bill. Basically, earmarks came about as a way for bills to pass while everybody got credit for the bill with bribes…(I will vote for your bill if you include $25 million for my bird sanctuary). If that is state leadership, please vacate the premises and stop trying to sneak in your plans. We all know if the majority of these earmarks were voted on, they would be defeated. Folks, I believe that when people are elected to hold office, they learn how abuse the system instead of learning how to help their states. They get away with everything! Basically, if Rangel wasn’t a Congressman, he would be sharing a cell with Wesley Snipes for the crimes he committed!
