‘Religious Liberty Is Under Attack’: U.S. Bishops Launch Multi-Year Religious Freedom Campaign

U.S. Bishops Launch Religious Freedom Offensive & CampaignIt’s been a long and seemingly never-ending battle between the Obama administration and the Catholic Church. With most faith leaders still uncomfortable with the government’s contraception mandate, the stalemate between the two parties hasn’t improved much in recent weeks. On Thursday, in response to this ongoing fight and a perceived increase in threats against liberty for people of faith, the Church announced a new religious freedom campaign.

“Religious liberty is under attack,” proclaims a new document from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops that announces the initiative. The detailed information present within the document, entitled, “Our First, Most Cherished Liberty,” speaks fervently about faith being under attack both in America and abroad.

The campaign, which U.S. Conference communications director Sister Mary Ann Walsh calls “extensive,” will occur over a multi-year period and will have numerous elements associated with it. The initiative will include inserts in church bulletins, encouragement for priests to address religious freedom issues and plenty of other elements.

U.S. Bishops Launch Religious Freedom Offensive & Campaign

CNN has more information about this newfound effort intended to restore and progress religious freedom:

In their Thursday document, the bishops also said that a handful of American states and municipalities have driven Catholic foster care and adoption services out of business because Catholic charities refused to place children with gay couples or unmarried straight couples.

The document also said that the federal government recently revised its contract with the Catholic Church’s Migration and Refugee Services to require it to provide or refer women to contraceptive and abortion services, in violation of Catholic teaching.

“Religious liberty is not only about our ability to go to Mass on Sunday or pray the Rosary at home,” the bishops said in a Thursday statement. “It is about whether we can make our contribution to the common good of all Americans. Can we do the good works our faith calls us to do, without having to compromise that very same faith?”

“This is not a Catholic issue,” the statement said. “This is not a Jewish issue. This is not an Orthodox, Mormon or Muslim issue. It is an American issue.”

U.S. Bishops Launch Religious Freedom Offensive & Campaign

Cardinal Timothy Dolan, President of the U.S. Conference of Bishops

The Blaze has covered many of the issues that are mentioned in the Bishops’ outline before. Cuts to funding in Catholic work against human trafficking, New York City’s attempt to prevent churches from renting public buildings and, of course, the contraceptive mandate do, indeed, show a different societal direction when it comes to handling faith in America.

The Bishop’s document concludes, in part, with the following call to arms for people of faith:

In particular, we recommend to our brother bishops that we focus “all the energies the Catholic community can muster” in a special way this coming summer. As pastors of the flock, our privileged task is to lead the Christian faithful in prayer.

Both our civil year and liturgical year point us on various occasions to our heritage of freedom. This year, we propose a special “fortnight for freedom,” in which bishops in their own dioceses might arrange special events to highlight the importance of defending our first freedom. Our Catholic institutions also could be encouraged to do the same, especially in cooperation with other Christians, Jews, people of other faiths, and indeed, all who wish to defend our most cherished freedom.

    I look forward to the day my parish priest speaks out from the altar about this attack on my faith. I’d rather the Church lose its tax exempt status than see our doctrine and dogma changed by progressives. Thanks to all Christians and others who support us in the fight against the erosion of the Constitution.

    A well-known self-destructive cycle of democratic behavior has been attributed to an eighteenth century historian by the name of Alexander Tytler. Whether Tytler is the original author or not, the concept of democratic self-destruction has been proven accurate, right here in America.

    “From bondage to spiritual faith;
    From spiritual faith to great courage;
    From courage to liberty;
    From liberty to abundance;
    From abundance to complacency;
    From complacency to apathy;
    From apathy to dependence;
    From dependence back into bondage.”

    —- and here is the GOOD part —-

    “From bondage to spiritual faith;
    From spiritual faith to great courage;
    From courage to liberty;
    From liberty to abundance;
    From abundance to complacency;
    From complacency to apathy;
    From apathy to dependence;
    From dependence back into bondage.”

    HOPEFULLY we are in the BONDAGE portion – although I don’t think so.
    I think we are in the APATHY to DEPENDENCE stage…. which means we have to be a WELFARE STATE – Dependent on the government — THEN we go in to BONDAGE —– THEN we break out of that into the “From bondage to spiritual faith; section.

    These are not WEEKS we are talking about – we are talking about YEARS….
    Lets hope we are going into the FAITH section

      It too Late! – If you Christians would have read the Bible you would have known this day was coming – Where was the Church – When God was thrown out of the Schools – where were they when God was thrown out of the Government – What did the Church think was going to happen?

      More than half of the Catholic Church Congregants voted for Obama – because they wanted to make Gods warning come true – “Many will be deceived, even the wisest among us.”

      Look it is obvious – these higher ups in the Catholic Church are just trying to save their Jobs – they threw God out of the Church along time ago – it’s too late – take a poll – your Catholic Congregant are going to vote for a Man that wants too destroy the “Apple of Gods Eye – Israel.” Why, because you did not teach your Congregants that when Israel gets attacked – god is going to attack everyone that voted for the attackers – That would be a large part of the Catholic Church and a Majority of the Christian Women in America – for What? Free Birth Control Pills – a free Obama Cell Phone – and some food stamps! My – My the trading price for Eternity has really gone down a few notches.

      I assure you – God is not leaning over the balconies of Heaven taking Maalox worried about what to do about Obama when he tells Israel to go back to 1967 Borders – God said that Israel will be attacked – and God also said – when the dust settles – Israel will still be standing and those that turned their backs on Israel will reep God judgement

      Jesus said “if you continue in my word, then are you my diciples indeed and you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.” America has been free because America has (at least in the past) embraced the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Constitution was made for a moral people and will continue to work if allowed to do so. If we return to Him, He will turn the ‘captivity’ of the American people. I love my country, but I am neither republican nor democrat, but a monarchist. I have a King and I trust Him to take care of me; after all He said he would. The obamas, sharptons, farrakhans, dino-soros’s and all their little minions have neither power nor authority greater than He, as they will (hopefully sooner than later) shortly discover to their great cost.

    Catholic institutions which closed rather than give children to homosexuals, should reopen. If a law is unconstitutional, it is null and void. Also, personnel at Catholic institutions should simply refuse to obey the null and void mandate. They should not pay any penalties or taxes for their refusal.
    Did you know there are provisions in Obamacare giving the government the power to go into our personal bank accounts to take out fees and penalties? It might be wise to close your bank accounts and keep your money under the mattress.

    This is not just a Catholic issue. This issue should be paramount on the minds of partakers of every faith. This is why the Pilgrims came to America…to be able to worship God as they understood, and not in a way mandated by the state.

    It’s incredibly strange that this administration has chosen to give new life to the old imperialistic grip on religious freedom. How is this happening today in America? What happened to us?

      Not the example I would use to prove your point, personally. The Pilgrims set up a theocratic state in New England and forced all others in the area to worship as they did. Salem witch trials, anyone?

      @LOCKED

      Interesting point.
      The Pilgrims came her to be able to worship freely. They formed their own states where their religion was the rule, but over time they realized that if they wanted freedom, they must tolerate their neighboring states religions as well.

      It was a bit more of a migration from the idea of freedom from one state religion to the idea of freedom from any state religion.

      Religion and principles are closely tied so the idea that you can easily decouple a legal system from a moral basis is a bit misleading but the US had made great progress in an acceptable law.

      Most religious fights seem to come from the govt getting into areas they were never constitutionally intended to get into. Marriage, medical care, schools, commerce, employment and telling other countries how to live.

      Too bad so few people realize that a govt policy of Maximum Freedom, Minimum Government allows for maximum religious freedom.

      There is nothing wrong with using the Pilgrims as an example. There would be nothing wrong with using the Puritans as an example either. It was the Puritans, not the Pilgrims who held the Salem Witch Trials, and the Salem Witch Trials were but a tiny moment in a much more broad narrative about the Pilgrims. If you were to use the Puritan example instead of the Pilgrim example, it would still be perfectly fine because the Puritans left England to be able to practice their faith as well. Roger Williams, a Puritan religious leader, was an early advocate of the separation of church and state. Things are much more nuanced than you had previously understood.

      “Your analogy is like saying that because of Westboro Baptist Church all Baptists are nuts.”

      What? Not remotely. Saying the Pilgrims came to America to worship “not in a way mandated by the state” is completely ignoring the fact that they came to set up their own theocratic state. They didn’t come for “freedom of religion,” they came to set up their own state-sponsored religion.

      Your analogy to Westboro is even more misguided. WBC isn’t trying to set up a theocratic state, they didn’t establish a colony, and they didn’t face considerable peril in doing so. So far as “freedom of religion goes,” the Pilgrims (who were Puritans, to respond to @J.Thomas) were not pro-freedom of religion. Hence why it’s a poor example to use.

      The closest tie-in to the Puritans/Pilgrims would be Rhode Island (and that would be an example I would have used). It was the only colony that allowed Catholics (note: the group in question with this article is Catholic) to even hold public office. And who created Rhode Island? Roger Williams, after being banished from the Massachusetts colony because… wait for it… of his religious views.

The declaration following the promulgation of the “Conon 1347 has the same essential import as the old… the fact that the “Masonic sect” is no longer explicitly named is irrelevant, and that “Catholics who join the Masons are in the state of grave sin and may not receive Holy Communion.

    I know that this won’t go over well with a lot of my fellow Americans these days (and certainly not your average The Blaze reader!), but these freedoms need to be extended to all faiths including Islam. There is a nasty hostility toward religion these days but none more so than toward Islam.

      The hostility towards the Islam religion comes from the people who view it as a religion of hate. Their actions and lack of condemnation of the atracities committed in Allah’s name is what stirs that hosility Gourdy. The hostility towards all other religions is coming directly from our government!!! They have actively supported Islam and, at the same time, carried on a frontal attack on the Catholic religion. Action like that- supporting a religion of hate, while attacking a religion of peace and service???

      Mrunner, I believe it’s a bit unfair to require every Muslim to pay nonstop penance for the vicious acts of a tiny handful of people who happen to practice their faith. I was raised a Catholic (although don’t practice the faith anymore), but I don’t feel compelled to apologize every time a Christian kills someone around the world.

      I agree with mrunner.

      There is distrust of the muslims. It is a reputation gained from the overwhelming portion of terrorist acts lately that come from islamists. You cannot say that people cannot have prejudices based on fact. Every identifiable group in society has a reputation.

      That said most of us know good people who are muslim. When muslims as a whole win back more trust, denounce the islamists and explain their religious and political positions, more people may stand up for them and be willing to work with them.

    Go for it Cardinal Dolan. Perhaps the membership will begin to see that there is some integrity of values within the halls of the Catholic Church. Then if they will begin identify and turn in the molesters to the cops they will see a rise in confidence and membership.

      The only tool the church has is to make the case to the press and its members.

      However given the number of Catholics in this country that is a very powerful tool.

      One other advantage the church has is that given its tradition/age, it can take on a decades long campaign.

    When the ordination of women as priests issue was being debated by Bishops’ Councils the world over, the US Bishops Council, as well as the Bishops’ Counsils in the rest of the civilized world stated that after studying the matter, they found nothing that prohibits such ordination. They were overruled by the African and South American Bishops’ Councils.

    Why this opposition to government health care policy in the US now from American Bishops?

      You went from women ordination to women’s health in a single thought. Obama would be so proud of you. All we need to do is get Labor Secretary Hilda Solis and HHS Secretary Sebelius together to make it mandatory that Churches ordain women and provide for their “reproductive health” and all would be right with the world.
      Maybe I shouldn’t say that too loud.

You might say they have a war on the US military, which has been ongoing since the 60s. Dairy Farmers and the Amish as the FDA conducts raids, the EPA on coal and natural gas. The Internet with their desire to regulate and tax.. the laundry list is very long indeed.

      I’m not. The Church has been seen as a house of immortality and sexual abuse for the past several years. They’ve found a way to go from being seen as the aggressor to the victim, and to win sympathy instead of hatred. Now, instead of hearing “Investigate the priesthood!“ or ”Priests should be able to marry!“ we get cries of ”We’re all Catholics!”

      It’s a positive PR spin, and it‘s no wonder that they’ll continue with it.

      Note: This is not to say anything on whether their views have merit or not. Simply that this is a politically and socially positive track for them to take and they’d be foolish not to. The Catholic Church hasn’t lasted for almost two millenia with dumb leaders.

      Sorry, Baikie, the fight CAME TO US!

      We’re just standing on our beliefs whether or not the Democrat Catholics agree or not. If they are cafeteria Christians, they’ve excomunnicated themselves anyway, and we’ll pray for them and our country (which we do everyday at Mass), and even for you!

      We KNOW what we believe and why we believe it and it’s not determine by men.

      Thank you Lord!

      Maybe in YOUR opinion, but in my and my Church’s belief system what is being forced on us is immoral! Besides, a right doesn’t “balance out” a wrong. All wrongs are sin and those sins nailed Jesus to the Cross, the little ones and the big ones! No one should be taking advantage of someone else.

      I am glad the the true leaders of the Faith are willing to take a stand and I will stand beside them. A call to celabicy is fine for them as it is fine for me!

      Thank you Lord for the Grace!

      http://distributist.blogspot.com/2007/08/catechism-of-catholic-social-teaching-1.html

      Anybody really interested in what the Catholic Church thinks about ‘social justice’ as opposed to what most people are ‘saying’, read CK Chesterton and Belloc. The ChestertonBelloc Mandate. There is AMPLE stuff on what is called ‘distributism‘. The above site would be good to read to see the view of the Church on basic moral and such issues. Then read all you can on what Chesterton and Belloc came up with. This is basically the ‘social justice’ of the Church, that came along with the Industrial Age. Mom and Pop. Small is better. If you want to know, look into this.

      This is NOT Jim Wallace!!! And Obama.
