Remember the ‘Slut Walk?’ It Made its NYC Debut This Weekend

The Days of Rage, Occupy Wall St. protest wasn’t the only march happening in New York this weekend. Remember the “slut walk” we’ve reported on in the past? (See here, here, and here.)Well the movement has finally made its way to New York City. And there’s video evidence to prove it.

The group known as “SlutWalk NYC“ is a grassroots movement that looks to challenge ”rape culture,” victim-blaming and slut-shaming, and works to end sexual and domestic violence. On Saturday they marched to promote their message on the streets of NYC. This video from the march was posted by YouTube user Sunday:

The global slut walk movement began in Toronto in April, 2011, following a Canadian cop’s remark to a law school that “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.”

The remarks led to a 3,000 person demonstration in Toronto, protesting the idea that a victim’s dress ever contributes to sexual violence, and as well as protesting the myth of “asking for it.” The Blaze has reported on the copycat events in Boston, Dallas, Asheville and Ottawa, that followed the original protest.

Saturday’s event began in Union Square and gathered over 1,000 demonstrators in response to remarks made by police that women should avoid wearing skirts following a string of attacks in Brooklyn. CBS News reports that several speakers told devastating personal accounts of sexual and domestic violence, that had nothing to do with what they were wearing:
