Obamacare a ‘Platform’ for Socialized Medicine — Rep. Conyers Makes Startling Admission

In a few moments of candor on Monday, Democratic Rep. John Conyers (MI) admitted Obamacare is just a “platform,” or a step, toward an eventual government takeover of health care:
Conyers made the revelation to CNS News reporter Nicholas Ballasy:
“What we’re trying to do is insure everybody, right? We’re trying to insure more people, not less and so it’s my feeling that the rising costs that are going on will not be solved by getting rid of people’s health insurance–that throws them into emergency rooms and charity and other things. That’s why HR 676 is our ultimate solution–is that everybody’s insured from birth on and that’s what we’re still fighting for.”
CNSNews.com then asked Conyers, “Do you see a single-payer health care system ultimately in the United States?”
“Of course,” he said. “Universal health care–well, every industrial country on the planet already has a universal system of health care.”
When asked if he thinks President Obama’s health-care law will lead to a single-payer health-care system in the U.S., Conyers said: “Well it’s a platform. I don’t think they flow smoothly but without that, if we didn’t have this then health care, universal health care would be an even more difficult legislative objective,” he said.
“Remind me again about the Politifact ‘biggest lie’ of 2010,” Hot Air’s Ed Morrissey writes, referring to the political fact-check site that cried foul over the phrase “A government takeover of health care.”

Health insurance will become more and more underpriced as the population grows with a larger percentage of “sick” people. I’m a conservative through and through, but what in the world is the solution–short of having everyone participate in the paying? Any bright ideas?

Report Post »chubbzbar
Posted on March 15, 2011 at 12:43pmYeah get the government out of direct pay for healthcare. The very year that Medicare started was the very year that healthcare started to rise. In the early 80′s I worked for an insurance company that paid Medicare claims. The providers raised prices every year to increase the amount they would be paid. The term is “usual and customary”. Every year (because the providers charged more last year) the “usual and customary” reimbursement to hospitals, doctors, nursing homes, etc. would increase.
Report Post »Have you ever asked someone how much they paid for an office visit and they say “I don’t know, I have insurance.“ Have you ever asked someone how much they paid for a heart surgery and they say ”Oh I am so glad I have Medicare, I never could have afforded it.” Well DUH who do you think paid for it in the first place? Put Medicare on a lifetime voucher system. You buy your own insurance and pay for things yourself. That would make the costs drop — but then the American people would have to take responsibility for things. I am willing are YOU?

Posted on March 15, 2011 at 12:50pmOne of the big issues is malpractice lawsuits. Every time a law to cap malpractice suits comes up, WE THE PEOPLE vote it down. I have a friend who is a PA, and she told me she wouldn‘t go any higher because the amount of money MD’s pay for malpractice insurance is absurd. Why are heath care costs high? Because if a doctor just happens to make a mistake taking the bullet out of a 16 year old gangbanger which leaves him with a limp for the rest of his life, the mother thinks she should get 200 million dollars to compensate for the “emotional trauma” and “loss of wages” suffered. I‘m not saying there shouldn’t be compensation, but there should be a cap somewhere. Of course, lawyers are not fond of this solution because it hits them in the purse as well as the defendants.

I find it interesting that all the ideas here are based on the assumption that “insurance” is part of the equation. When I was a child (born 1944) it was taken as ordinary that if you went to the doctor you paid for it out of pocket. I first started hearing of “healthcare insurance” in my teens and it was as an adjunct to employment – back then (when our country was still producing goods and services) there was competition for manpower and insurance packages were introduced as an inducement to attract workers. I’m no historian but my guess is that non-union employers were forced (by the marketplace) to compete with the collective bargaining powers of unions for labor.
Here’s a question: Which system do you think would be the most effective at holding down the cost of medical care – the one where the individual evaluates the need for medical intervention or the one where every headache gets medical attention because somebody else pays for it?
My brain is not big enough to provide solutions but it doesn’t take much common sense to see how we got where we are.

Posted on March 15, 2011 at 2:40pmI should have inserted in the first paragraph (for those of us who don’t remember back that far) that in the event of accident or catastrophic illness the family circled the wagons and took care of their own. The circle may have eventually extended to friends, church and community but in no one’s mind did it occur to make personal misfortune a federal case.

Posted on March 15, 2011 at 3:01pmpapabear & maryslittlelamb, thank you for both posts. My pastor said it has always been the duty of the church to care for the people, not the government. We have become a country with no moral code. Glen was talking about the lack of looting and rioting in Japan during what is arguable one of the worst disasters in their history, and we look at our behavior during Katrina and should be ashamed of who we have allowed ourselves to become. We have allowed politicians who we wouldn‘t let babysit our children tell us we don’t know how to raise our children. We have allowed politicians who are spending other people’s money with the thought process that they can just print more tell us we are not smart enough to manage our own affairs. We have allowed morally bankrupt politicians tell us that we are too stupid to understand the complex business of government. If we do not change this trend, the next civil unrest in the world may be closer to home than we would like.

At the least he is right on one simple point, without this blasted Obama care mess, then the means of them getting universal health care would be near impossible, which it should be (nearly impossible) to have happen.
And now Obama, via the Judicial Department, is telling the Supreme Court to not interfere with the way the various lawsuits are coming its way.
Of the Fourth Circut court of Appeals, four of the 15 judges are Obama appointees, anyone want to figure when one of these cases gets to them, the three judges will “happen” to be three of those four.

Makes me think of that scene in ‘A Few Good Men’ “I think he wants to say it. I think he’s p*ssed off that he has to hide behind all this. I think he wants to say that he made a command decision and that should be then end of it”
Theses guys are so close to transforming this country and its making them nuts they cant talk about it, thus Conyers running his bigmouth. Posted on March 16, 2011 at 10:03amInsurance is part of the problem.. For year the insurance ind. has been paying BOGUS bills and overinflated rates and just stroking the docs. bank accounts ( I do not believe that not every doc. is responsible and many policy holders scam their ins. too). All i know is my policy went up 50% when this law passed and it does not cover ANYTHING!.. So i dropped it cause i need chiro. care and it did not cover that or dental. Now I have a plan with my chiro. and my dentist. They do not mine me paying cash and get this it is CHEAPER to pay with money than ins… SOOO why is health care so expensive????? Because it is a blank check for unscrupulous doctors and patients.
Not sure how true it is but have heard that 10% of Americans are responsible for 75% of the ins. claims in America?..So does everyone really need ins.??? universial health worked so good in England that they have decide (after decades of implementation) to do away with it and join us in our system..
