Rep. King Calls for Wikileaks to Be Declared a ‘Foreign Terrorist Organization’

GOP Congressman Peter King is, of course, outraged at the Wikileaks release of sensititve diplomatic documents.  But he’s channeled the outrage into a direct request of the Obama administration.  He talked to New York City radio station 1010 WINS-AM:

“This is worse even than a physical attack on Americans, it’s worse than a military attack,” King said.

King has written letters to both U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton asking for swift action to be taken against WikiLeaks and its founder Julian Assange.

King wants Holder to prosecute Assange under the Espionage Act and has also called on Clinton to determine whether WikiLeaks could be designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization.

“By doing that we will be able to seize their funds and go after anyone who provides them with any help or contributions or assistance whatsoever,” King said.

careful with this one, the government has nearly no restrictions in dealing with terrorist ( like the constitution, fair trial etc) who else are they going to declare a terrorist next?

Indeed Dan. This is a setup. That simple.

And people are falling for it hook, line and sinker. They’ve accepted the conditioning thrust on them their entire lives, the conditioning that demands that they accept and advocate for a National Security State, that there is no other option in their minds. They *must* demand that the State’s secrets remain secret, even though on any other topic many of them may reject government’s demands. How can the same government that abuses them, taxes their lives to their eyeballs, confiscates their freedom on a daily basis…well how could any such government somehow be pure, chaste and Doing The Right Thing ™ when it comes to their huge cloak of secrecy?

Maybe if we weren’t always in conflict, which seems to be the case since WW1, maybe we wouldn’t need all of this “national security”. Maybe all of this “national security” secrecy is what keeps getting us into one conflict after another?

Fact is, we’re not “at war” now and haven’t been since 1945. This entire scenario is suspect. The “kill him!” folks aren‘t thinking this through if they’re from the non-political class. They’re being played and are being led into demanding their own censorship.

This is no different than 150 years ago. Government cannot suppress free speech. If it has secrets, then it needs to take steps to keep them secret, assuming whatever the government is doing needs to be kept secret. Personally, I take steps to live my life such that I would not be embarrassed by having it published on the Internet.

      Kupp,

Your personal life and your decisions do not effect hundreds of millions of people’s lives if some of those decisions were made public.

–”Government cannot suppress free speech. If it has secrets, then it needs to take steps to keep them secret, ”

First of all…The first amendment has nothing to do with this issue. The amendments are liberties designed “for” the people. But there are limits. As you cannot yell “fire” in a crowded theater…one cannot steal information, and release it to the world which in turn will threaten the lives of every man woman and child in the US and abroad. Think before you write Kupp!!! You clearly don’t have a clue of what you speak.

It isn’t the job of government to shut down free speech. It is their job to conduct business in such a way that government actions can stand the light of day.

If someone inside government with security clearance leaked documents, then they should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. This is nothing new. Internet websites are no different than newspapers or pamphleteers of the 18th century. What is different is how inept and yet oppressive our once proud republic has become under this regime, and dating back to at least 2006.

Agreed. What would our present day look like if our country actually acted in the honorable manner they claim to. Don’t want it known…then don’t commit the acts. This is not a situation where the leaks state “Bob Jones in your village is a CIA spy” or “We plan to hit sector 101 tomorrow at 0600 with a frontal assault combined with air cover”…it’s about the FRAGO orders, our attempts at manipulating the chessboard by undermining or bolstering governments around the world to achieve our own goals. It’s about patting one leader on the back and then (in writing) conspiring behind their back with another country. It is nothing more than a higher level of busting in on a senator cheating on his wife with a TV crew. You don’t want to get caught with your pants down? Then keep them up…and zipped.

I’m beginning to think our country is as bad (if not worse) than those we point fingers at as being terrorist states…we’re just better at hiding it and snowing the populace.

Remember what they always say about opressive countries? They get fed through the media only what the regime wants them to see and hear. They have no clue what is really going on in the world or in their own country. Are we there yet?

Thank God for GB, RL, SH & ML!

Compromising national security is treason where it endangers and is punishable by death.

The sad thing though is I don’t know if I trust the current administration enough to make the case and follow through today and then tomorrow make the same case against those protesting big government and out of control spending and follow through.

Something makes me feel uneasy about all this. I don’t know if this is yet another media set up against conservative critics, FOX, Beck, Limbaugh. I suspect it is. No question Wikileks is a tempting target, but are the security leaks for real and how would we legally define crossing the line to establish treason if these are real issues endangering those in harms way?

The leader of wikileaks is not a citizen of the U.S. So he can’t be tried for treason. Second He is not a citizen and what he has done wasn’t done in any jurisdiction of the United States. I hate to say it, but the U.S has no authority to go after him. Unless of course they put the wikileaks as a terrorist organization. If his native counrty or the country he resided in doesn’t prosecute him, then He is a free man. Again I hate to say it, but the U.S. has no authority to do anything to the guy. They can kill the soldier who gave the guy (what is his name anyway) the information.

WikiLeaks did not steal/take the documents. They had nothing whatsoever to do with who or how or from where they were obtained. WikiLeaks is a clearinghouse for whistle-blowers to get their information out to the public without reprisals.

If Glenn Beck were to anonymously receive leaked government documents proving…oh, just for a hypothetical example…that Obama and Spooky Dood planned to start a war as a domestic political distraction…would you want the government to assassinate Glenn for receiving and publishing them?

If you grant the government power to kill/kidnap/harm Assange for publishing *already-leaked* documents, they can and WILL use that power on people you *do* agree with who *are* the “good guys”.

Does anyone remember the Pentagon Papers and Woodward and Bernstein? Did they *cause* the leaks? Would killing them have stopped anything, or would the original leaker simply have found another outlet?

If you destroy the ability of the press to publish things the government doesn’t want published, you‘ve gutted the press’s ability to be the guardians as the Founders envisioned. The leak had already happened before WL received the documents.

The documents were available to approximately *3 MILLION PEOPLE* on SIPRNET. Now, with all the news of late regarding how China and other countries have been stealing us blind with spies both inside and outside our government, don’t you think that any foreign government that wanted the information already had it long ago?

If so many lives were at stake, why the H*** were they placed on a relatively low-security network where a *freakin’ Specialist 1st Class*(!!) could access them? Not only access them, but was allowed to copy and transfer them out of the facility? Don’t you think that any foreign government that wanted them could have gotten them with little problem?

This is not the fault of WikiLeaks or Assange. If they hadn’t been released there, they would have been released elsewhere.

This is the same thing as a newspaper being given sensitive documents here in the US. Would you like Obama to have the power to assassinate journalists? How long do you think it would take for Obama, the unions, Spooky Dood, etc to use those powers to “take out” Glenn?

The same powers to they would need/use to “take out” Assange/WikiLeaks are the same powers that would be used to “take out” any other journalist/reporter/blogger/news outlet/etc.

Remember also that much of this “countless lives at risk” talking-points stuff was heard with the last WikiLeaks document release. I have heard of no deaths as a result. Not even a “I heard from sources” claim of deaths as a result. And the previous leaks DID directly concern military operations.

This leak appears to only concern US diplomat’s chatter about other foreign leaders and diplomats…”the leader of so-and-so appears to be in very poor health“ or ”this guy is an a**hole” type of talk. Unless some country wants to declare war on us for an insult from some low-level diplomatic attache’s assistant, I don’t think too many lives are at risk. This is CYA and a perceived chance to expand their control over what we can see, hear, and publish by inflaming people enough to grant them additional power over news and the internet.

Even Glenn has said that if they get control over the internet, we’ve lost. Is shooting the messenger worth losing the battle for a return to the America we love?

Save your ammo, guys. We have bigger and more important battles to fight, rather than helping Obama and the Progressives silence one of the only places where people can see and read things the government doesn’t want you to see or read.

      @bluestrat
      Well thought out post.
The Progressives would have us believe that the only way to have peace in the Middle East is to have Israel capitulate to Hamas or Hesbollah(sic). You know settlements Palestinians etc ad nauseum.
What the documents show, is an increasing impatience from pur Middle East “allies”with the “one” ,who thinks he is the smartest guy in the room. The Saudis have been screaming for a strike on Iran and the one keeps saying “I got this” when in reality he’s got nothing.
Dealing with Iran,Korea et al is like trying to negotiate with a mugger. When you say let’s talk about what you really want they get more aggressive. Sometimes you have to decide whether to talk or act. The Saudi’s have been begging “the one” to act but he wants to find out or, he believes he knows what’s really bothering the Iranians/North Koreans. Nothing is bothering them they’re muggers. Information in the wikileaks docs suggests that Korea has sold 19 missiles to Iran with much more power than we knew.
Now back to my original premise. The Progressive agenda is to bring down the U.S. All of the information that has been “leaked” is an attempt to do just that. If the U.S. can be made to look bad that’s good for the Progressives. The “one’s” foreign policy is a disaster and now everyone in the world knows it. He is in way over his pay grade and now everyone here and in the world knows it. He will destroy whatever goodwill was left and we may be left to go it alone. I say chain him to his desk and not let him leave the country again until 1/21/2013. Geez………

BLUESTRAT….you are correct . this is obviously another distraction. one more diversion and is part of the overall gutting of America. Ask yourself, what is the goal here? Just another attempt take our attention away from what is really going on. Sure it is not a good thing to have all this information out there, but it harms only image. Could our image get any worse? No, the damage that Obama has done to our country is far worse than anything wikileaks could do….there is no proof that any of the leaked documents are sensitive enough to warrant all the hubbub. Embarrassing, maybe, but I’m so mortified at the actions of our government that it pales in comparison. just more confusion to advance the illusion that the administration is actually working for the people, it is NOT. Each distraction the radical left comes up with gets a reaction from the right, and that is exactly what the left wants….Attention drawn away from the action that the administration is pushing. It is time for another push and that is exactly what is happening. The time is getting short and it won’t be long untill need for martial law becomes THE issue. The “bottom-UP” part of the process is taking form as the left becomes bolder on the streets.
If you look at the history of our decline, you will see a villain so insidious, it will amaze you! It is the labor unions. They desroyed our manufacturing and our trade balance with their outrageous demands, and now are working toward anarchy,(which will lead to the further erosion of our civil liberties). The American Gestapo will wear SEIU T-shirts.

The soldier who gifted the documents to WIKI Leaks was apparantly acting as a “useful idiot” on behalf of the Traitor in the White House.(Barack Hussein Obama) When will Congress WAKE UP and recognize Obama as the key to all of this ?

While Obama’s Justice Department sues the state of Arizona for “human rights” violations simply for trying to enforce our immigration laws, Obama and his cronies are playing “Let’s Make a Deal” worldwide with human lives at Gitmo… Is this not a violation of human rights and therefore, a major double standard? We must go after Wikileaks, of course; but we should also go after our own bumbling/hypocritical leaders right here in America…

      @ JKN

NO! We should NOT go after WikiLeaks. Read my post above. Think! Your automatic anger is being deliberately flamed and used as an excuse for the Progressives to grant themselves more power to be able to silence any dissent and remove anything they don’t like on the internet that harms their agenda.

If you just go off half-cocked without doing your homework like Glenn always tells us, you’re HELPING SOROS AND OBAMA!! You’re allowing them to use you and your anger to take away our freedom.

If they use people’s misdirected anger at WikiLeaks to grant themselves the power to shut down any website/blog/etc they deem a danger, just how long do you think THIS site will last? How long before Glenn is being waterboarded at Gitmo?

They WANT you to scream for blood from Assange and to shut down WikiLeaks! They‘ll use it as an excuse to snuff out all dissent on the ’net, not just WL. Do your homework!

I‘m frankly shocked and disappointed with all the unthinking posters here that scream for our government to assume the power to shut down anything and anyone the government doesn’t like on the internet and to assassinate those who merely publish things they don’t like.

You cheer now, but how will you feel when THIS site and others like it are shut down also? When they assassinate Glenn?

      THINK!!

@ BLUESTRAT… I can certainly see your point in not going after the messenger, Wikileaks, simply for reporting what was already leaked. We must consider the source…

Clearly, our government would love to use the shut down of Wikileaks as an “example” for the rest of us and as a spring board for shutting down any or all blogs and websites that don’t “agree” with their Progressive policies; however, we simply can’t allow all of our strategic commentary to be exposed for the whole world, including our enemies, to see. Lives could very well be at risk…

As for our government… No pity from me. Rather than scrambling around the world performing damage control, our members of Congress would do well to consider the American people… How about a little damage control right here in America?

The trap was nicely laid. Just the perfect vehicle for ensnaring well meaning patriots into calling for government regulation of the internet! It really is quite ingenious to get those who have supposedly been on guard to protect the Constitution and Bill of Rights to call for its suspension in the name of patriotism. Looks like at least one GOP politician has stepped squarely in it.

Don’t be foolish. Quit being ruled by your fear. Stop reacting emotionally and carefully consider what you are asking for when you cry for the end of Wikileaks. You are asking the federal government to step into the world of internet information and begin controlling it. The only concern of the government should be to stop the leak at its source in the military or government, not how the information is handled once its been compromised. Ask yourselves this. If the government shuts down this site and other sites, who is it that is kept from this top secret information? ONLY the public. The enemies of the U.S. as well as other interested governments and individuals will still be able to learn this information because the source of the leak has not been addressed. Julian Assange didnt break into government servers or vaults and steal this information. It was brought to him. The person or persons responsible for actually giving away the information will still be able to give it to interested parties, but the public will never learn of it. It won’t change a thing as far as national security is involved, it will simply leave us in the dark about what is happening, and more importantly will allow the feds to tighten their stranglehold on one of our beloved freedoms. And it turns my stomach to know that it will be done at the request of so many Americans claiming to love and cherish liberty.

Step aside from your emotions and take an objective look at your reactions, those of you calling for government or military action against wikileaks or Julian Assange by asking yourself the following question: What if the information that was being released was documents and cables showing conversations and communications between White House officials and the Chavez Administration revealing plans to drive oil industry money to Venezuela as a result of the BP oil spill? What if the documents detailed conversations where White House officials were inquiring about the methods and means Chavez used in order to overturn his country’s constitution and replace it with Communism? What if it revealed secret communications with Hezbollah, PLO and other anti-Israel organizations on how to proceed with actions that will lead to the loss of Israeli territory and power to these organizations? What if it revealed that the West Coast “jet trail” really was a ballistic missile launched by a foreign power and that our military and government was completely aware of the fact, but chose to not respond to the threat and misinform the public? I wonder how many of you would be calling for Assange’s death or government intervention to shut down the website? I suspect the reverse would be true. You would praise the site and claim that this information must be protected from the governments attempts to quash it. And that would be the proper response. But we must protect free speech at all times, not just when the speech advances OUR goals. I dont like Assange, but my dislike for him is FAR outweighed by my love and admiration for our founders beliefs about freedoms and The Constitution they created to protect them on OUR behalf.
