Rep. Upton Hints GOP May Have the Votes to Repeal Obamacare

Appearing on Fox News Sunday this week, incoming Energy & Commerce Committee chairman Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., hinted that House Republicans may have enough votes to repeal President Obama’s health care overhaul law, and may even have the numbers to override a potential presidential veto of the repeal measure. The big repeal push, Upton said, may come sooner than many anticipated, potentially even before the president’s upcoming State of the Union address.

“As part of our pledge we said that we would bring up a vote to repeal health care early,” Upton said. “That will happen before the president’s State of the Union address. We have 242 Republicans. There will be a significant number of Democrats, I think, that will join us. You will remember when that vote passed in the House, last march; it only passed by seven votes.

“Just wait,” he continued. “If you switched four votes from last March, that bill would have gone down. So we’ll take the Democrats that voted no, we will take other Democrats who probably agree with Speaker Pelosi’s statement. Remember when she said we want to pass this thing because then we‘ll learn what’s in it? Well now the American public does know what is in it. Unpopularity numbers are as high as 60 percent across the country. I don‘t think we’re going to be that far off from having the votes to actually override a veto.”

Overriding a presidential veto requires the support of two-thirds federal lawmakers. The easier approach would be a piece-by-piece rebuttal of the law, which Upton also hinted at Sunday. “We’ll look at the 1099 issue — [Michigan Rep.] Dave Camps’ committee, Ways and Means — to look at the $600 1099 that has to be processed for every business transaction. We’ll look at the individual mandate requirement and all of those as individual pieces. We are going to take up early the Pitts-Stupak language ‘no funds shall be spent on abortion’ as a separate bill early on. And we will look at the individual pieces to see if we can’t have the thing crumble.”

Upton’s comments follow a stern warning from Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, who Friday warned that any attempt from Republicans to overturn the Democrats’ health care reform law would open the door to a single-payer system for the United States.

“If you demolish the new bill and we go back to square one, you still have 50 million who don’t have any coverage, then what‘s the option if you can’t have the government, say, by private insurance, which — believe me, as someone would has fought that system I understand that — then the only other option is to say what other industrialized democracies say, healthcare is a basic right, we’ve got to provide for everyone, we’ll have a single-payer system,” the congressman said.

“So, my Republican friends who are working very hard to demolish the bill, may, in fact, inadvertently, paradoxically be creating the opening to push single-payer forward again,” he said.

    Repeal…,YES! Fingers crossed.
    I hope everyone posting on here pays attention to what their own congressmen and senators are doing in 2011 and beyond.
    I know people are busy…, but you can sign up at congress.org and they will give you a brief description of the bill and how your rep voted. It will be delivered to your inbox.If you don’t agree with the vote you can send your rep. an E mail right from their website.
    Remember…,it was not just politicians that got us where we are today. We as citizens abetted.
    Things are not going to get better in D. C. if we are not watching.

      You are right on the mark Lucy. Let‘s be honest and admit our mistake since it’s the voter that put this Obama team into the White House and into the Senate and the House. The nation realizes that now and have voted out the democrats and replaced them with republicans in the House of Representatives. It is imperative that we, as voters, monitor the performance of each of the state representatives we sent to Washington this time. I urge all voters to sign up to http://www.congress.org and follow the voting history of their representatives, as I do now, and send them email comments as to how well they represent your personal views. If they can’t cut the mustard, let them know they will be replaced in the next election.

    The United States of America IS IN FACT a country based on ‘Faith’.

    Not necessarily Christian Faith – but faith in humankind,decency, truth, honor and laws.

    - Trust that most people obey our laws. Faith that those who do not will be appropriately held accountable.
    - Faith that in the hard moments – our elected representatives will do the right thing.

    This is what the founders envisioned. This is what our country expects. This is what our people deserve.
    We entrust the elected to honor their commitment to the electorate. We have faith that the person we cast our vote for will do what they campaigned on. We trust and pray now, that our country, that our officials and that our courts will DO THE RIGHT THING.

    The bill they passed is so big and entrenched it is almost impossible to repeal, it was by design, hence the secrecy. The only chance they truly have is the one they won’t touch. The birther problem. His dog has better documents than he does. Mine even has a graduate degree. Does B.O.? Regardless of the truth on his paper’s though, his actions could not be more un-american than this statist garbage. This alone on principle should be enough.

    I don’t agree with his reason for going there, as it’s just being tactical, but he has a point. A plan needs to be formulated first, and fast if they are going to do this. That goes for everything. The system is bleeding out, so if you’re going to remove bad sutures you need to sew it up properly ASAP.

    Watching the political machinery at work is like watching shoppers on Black Friday. Everything is such a mess.

      There are many “duplicate” and ineffective agencies that could be shut down … not to mention that many of these Federal agencies are and should be State responsibilites … government works best on a “local” level. The Dept of Ed .. is one of the worst.

      It also puts thousands of new I.R.S. agents to work.Put demands on small buisness and drives the cost of health care up,up,up.IT IS COSTING JOBS IN EVERY DOCTORS OFFICE AND HOSPITAL IN THIS COUNTRY.My Doctors office has already went from a $75.00 office call the day the law passed to $223.00 office calls now,today.Thats every time you walk in the door. I guess thats all good stuff.
      I wish people would start useing their heads before they let their mouths work.This so called Health Care bill is going to shut down one third of the small buisnesses in this Country and these people that is fighting to keep this thing knows it.

      All those things may well be good. But they are not for the Federal Government. Help work to downsize the Federal Government and the money will never leave your state in the first place. The individuals in your state will have more money too, with no adjustment to the tax rates. Then, the good people of California, and every other state that wants health care, can vote it in for their state. Based on what I know about Romney’s MassCare, or whatever they call it, I think I’ll opt out.

      There were a few sensible ideas in the 2000+ pages and more sensible ideas left out. All the new structure and new bureaucracy plus the student loan takeover need to be repealed and the sensible ideas put in a drastically shorter, totally tranparent, well vetted bill.

      MOST of ObamaCare is not about health care and it certainly isn’t about the mundane prevenative care items you mentioned…These services are really cheap if you want them so why do we need a federal government ot provide breast exams or ass checks?

      Nobody was ever engaged in stoping you from getting them and if you can’t find the money just cancel your TV Cable or brown bag it for lunch for a month and you too can have a prostate exam. In your case they could do a brain evaluation while they are in there.

      What good is “affordable” health care when you can’t find a doctor?

      Poor people are already eligible for free health insurance… and because of Obamacare, doctors are dropping them and refuse to treat them any more. I don‘t even know who my kid’s primary care Dr. is any more, but it certainly isn’t the one that I want. Since we don‘t believe in most vaccinations and some Dr’s won‘t treat you if you won’t fully vaccinate, I don’t even know if whatever Dr. they assigned us to would even treat us.

      It is obvious you are only pointing at what you think are the good things—about a half a dozen in all. The rest of the bill is a disaster and if it goes into full effect in 2014, it will be a disaster for the country. There will be no more private insurance companies. It will be a 1 payer system At the very least, 160 new agencies will have access to your health records as well as at least 17,000 new IRS agents. One of the jobs of the new agents is to keep a constant check on the people to see if they have the government mandated insurance. If not, you will be fined and if you don’t pay before your next tax return, it will be confiscated to pay what you owe. Think of the cost of all the new agencies plus what it takes to run them plus all the new IRS agents. There is so much else I could say here as I have been keeping track of this since day 1. This bill is not really to help the people. It is for government control and information access. They are not helping anything here but themselves. This bill will devastate the economy if it goes into full effect. It will take a little while, but it WILL HAPPEN. They will have access to all your previous health information and this will enable them even further to decide what care you get and how much. Call it death panels or whatever term you want. The government will make the final decision once this bill is in full place, not your doctor or your family. The elderly will be throwaways. There is a saying that I don’t remember verbatim, but in essence it says you will know a country by how the elderly are treated.

      Congress approval ratings started in 1974- the AVERAGE approval rating is 36% and current around 20%. Why would any human being want to entrust their healthcare with a group you only agree with 36% of the time??? What person give additional money and power over your life to a body of people you DISAGREE with 64% of the time???

      Repeal is a must!! Keep gov. out of our lives as much as possible- no one on this earth disagrees with people born heath issues should not be effected by pre-existing conditions clauses, however, a smoker with lung cancer is on their own. Keep gov out of our personal lives.

      You list a few good things in the bill that might, just might take up 4 or 5 pages of this bill but what about the other 1995 pages that we have NO IDEA WHATS ON THEM because we needed to pass it first to find out whats in the bill. Once you see your freedoms being taking away from you it WILL BE TOO LATE THEN to do anything about it then.

My health insurance(which I pay for myself) has increased 40% this year.I am sure this is to cover deadbeats like you who won’t buy insurance until you get sick I cannot afford to support my family and yours too. Anyone who is disabled should have free care, the rest of you parasites get a job and pay your own way. This is America!

Let’s hope this will happen ASAP; then move on to energy independence (get those oil rigs pumping and let’s start drilling in Alaska) before gas prices hit $5/gal. Slowly but surely untangle the mess made in the last two years and return government to the people.

      The only ppl that wanted this bill are the radicals and their handout drones. Im broke, unemployed and pay my own med ins with what $$ I have left (btw it just went up $30 mo b/c of obamacare) and dont want this obomination! The threat of single payer and leaving ppl with no insurance is nothing but a threat… an empty threat. Many would agree to start over pull the maybe one or two good things that might be in obamacare and create something that isnt 2000+ pages with all kinds of bs built into it that have nothing to do with healthcare.

      Any socialist that comes forward making idle threats like Kucinich needs to be looked into for what they have to lose if this thing is repealed or unfunded. Too many backroom deals were made to get it through. This thing stinks on ice as GB would say and anyone still in favor of it or coming to its defense is dirty.

      New blood you better make this thing go away, the country and economy cannot handle it. Dont forget you are on probation do not fail the republic.

      I also pay my own insurance and healthcare .. REPEAL OBAMACARE … I should not be forced to buy healthcare that I will never use or do not want .. I can choose what coverage to spend my money on … allow people to buy across state lines and increase competition would help reduce costs.

      This is a back door national ID. Forced health insurance or be fined. Then you must provide your currant address to the feds at all times. ( fine to come if you don’t) They will have access to your health records. Meaning: your doctor, your DNA & blood…if this doesn’t open the door to abuse. I don’t know what would. Soon you will be chipped like a dog. You will be told in case of an emergency they can access your medical records.(Chip or big fine) They will know who you are with scanners, where you go, what you do. Freedom will be gone

      They’ve screwed us on Social Security (was to be placed in a “lock box” and not touched)…LIE…They’ve screwed union workers because their retirement packages are not able to be supported to the level that they faithfully funded and were promised…MORE LIES…They’ve screwed many, many Americans out of their Profit Sharing portfolios (as much as 50%) when the stock market crashed in Sept 2008 (it was a bigger Ponzi scheme than Madoff)…and the “crash” was caused by manipulations to the Trading Rules back in 2007…AND… OF COURSE… THE ”CRASH’ USHERED IN THE MOST UNQUALIFIED MAN TO EVER SIT IN THE OVAL OFFICE…ALL DESIGNED TO TAKE AWAY OUR FREEDOMS…IT HAS ALL BEEN BASED ON LIES…FRAUD…THEFT…

I’VE CALLED AND WRITTEN ALL OF MY REPRESENTATIVES…HAVE YOU??…OR DO YOU JUST LIKE TO BLOW OFF STEAM HERE AT THE BLAZE??? I FOR ONE HAVE HAD ENOUGH OF THE BS! REPEAL OBAMACARE! It is just THEIR way to pick and choose who will receive care and who WILL NOT…IT IS UNAMERICAN AND ILLEGAL IN THIS COUNTRY AND DON’T LET ANYONE TELL YOU OTHERWISE!

      REPEAL the whole damn thing. Don’t cut some out. We do not want a freaking cookie to appease us. We want ALL of it gone, the good, the bad, ALL! Start over. We do not trust the gigantic bill.

      Despite an excellent experience rating, our insurance went up significantly (20%) this year because of the bill. We have BCBS. It seems one of the things in the bill is forced coverage fo things we don’t need. (We already have a “Cadillac” plan). It’s funny they can change your plan, but if you make the smallest change, including a different deductible, you loose grandfathered status and you must get a new plan (even higher cost). It’s insanity. I guess Barry, Harry & Nancy lied…. Gee, that’s a new one. A Demon-crat lying! You can’t spell Democrat without rat!

      I want this repealed. It should never have gone through in the first place. We the people were screaming “no” at the top of our lungs & they ignored us. This is not about medical care. It is about power & communist takeover. 2,000 pages of what? Per Nancy, “We have to pass the bill to see what’s in it?” Bologna!

      Every time I hear Chris Wallace saying that there are not enough votes to repeal health care so why vote….I want to scream. The whole idea of a Congress is to vote on things so we know who is voting on our behalf and who isn’t. They have been hiding behind each other for years by not voting on things. Now this game has come to an end.
