Report: 10-Year-Old Girl Gives Birth in Southern Spain

MADRID (AP) — A Spanish official says a 10-year-old girl living in the south of the country has given birth.

Micaela Navarro, the Andalusia region’s social affairs minister, says authorities are evaluating whether to let the mother and her family retain custody of the baby, born last week in the city of Jerez de la Frontera.

Navarro told reporters that the father of the baby is also a minor. Her department declined to give further details, such as the sex or health of the baby.

Spanish newspapers said the mother is of Romanian origin. The daily Diario de Jerez quoted medical staffers who treated the girl as saying they were told by her mother that giving birth at such a young age is common in their country.

    Grandmaof5, If your children did something wrong would you demand to be thrown in jail. They have a different way of life then we do. Don’t be so harsh and judgemental. Our children in the US are obese and lazy. Should parents lose their rights and go to jail for allowing their kids to get fat? Chill out granny.

      I actually do tend to think that 10 year old kids that are 300 lbs should have their parents thrown in jail. There is NO excuse for that and IMO, it’s child abuse.

    I am truly horrified. Children at that age cannot know or understand what making love is all about, only the sex act itself. They would have had to have had help in some way. The parents should be held responsible and their children taken away. I know different countries have different customs, but a child needs a childhood. Life is too short as it is. Nobody should have to be an adult at such a young age. May God Bless.

    We used to take young girls that got pregnant off to homes for unwed mothers where they gave birth and the child was put up for adoption by a loving parents that couldn’t have children of their own, breaking the cycle once and for all. Now we make sure they stay in school, showing all the other kids it isn’t so bad, provide them housing allowances, food, money for cokes and gum, encouraging others to make the same mistake. 33 year old great grandmothers running all over the place doesn’t seem like something that should make a nation proud.

    From a purely biological perspective, it is not unheard of for girls to experience their first menses by the age of ten; however, due to physical immaturity, pregnancies at such an age can be extremely dangerous for the girl and the baby. As I understand it, this holds true for girls up to 13 and 14.

    That isn’t even accounting for psychological maturity. Girls of such a young age are not even close to being prepared psychologically for the trials and difficulties associated with pregnancy and raising a child.

    Unfortunately, some cultures do not realize these issues and simply follow their traditions, twisted as they may be from our perspective.

    I wish they released more details. We just don’t know what happened. Ten years old is way too young to be sexually active or have a child. A female isn’t even fully developed at that age. Not to mention it’s just medically dangerous. That could have killed her. This is a terrible situation.

      Ten isn’t too young to have a child, but definitely too young to be interested in sex. I think the girl’s parents may have something to do with it.

    Probably a good idea to just… you know… Off the moms and dads of the parents. And put the parents in some kind of religious academy until they’re adults. And put the baby up for adoption. Would like some reassurance this is never ever going to happen again. :/

    At 10 years old, my three daughters were years away from the level of physical maturity required to get pregnant. Plus, any male that would have tried to touch any one of them would have pulled back a bloody stump!

    You can’t stop the 10 yrs. old from having sex..they will find away…? When do kids in Spain become sexually active?? 5?? A sad relection on the society…no chance for age of innocence there…

      My two cents only but 10 year old‘s don’t typically have sex…..they’re typically raped or coerced in some way. She is way too young to consent, let alone actively seek out sex. I think something more is going on and I’d look at her father first.

    We know very little of the situation and should be quick to NOT judge. This is so sad a 10-year-old’s childhood was so short.

      Agreed-this is really not a new phenomenon–history will show the same thing through the centuries–the cause is the Arab invasion and subsequent control of Spain and Portugal since before medieval times. The Muslim lifestyle has always encouraged such early couplings.

    OMG… I feel sick to my stomach!!! The mother should be strung up by her heels. I have to wonder though… are they going through puberty at 10 now? WOW!!! Still… I’m disgusted. The one who’ll suffer, I promise you, is that baby. Sick sick world we’re living in.

      @MissCJ – it’s going to hell(soon to be the Great Tribulation), that’s where. Mankind has wanted to dictate what‘s right and what’s wrong, despite God’s warning… find the scriptures… I Sam. 8 (read carefully vs. 6). WE ARE God’s chosen people… WE are Israel (though we are lost in identity to the world), we are still very much God’s people… it’s not hard to see that we were a blessed nation starting around 1803 after the birthright blessings were withheld for over 2 millenia, and those blessings are quickly being removed due to our national sins. God was working with His people then, until they rejected His government and demaned a man like all the other nations(they never understood that they were a special and peculiar nation, meant to be seperate from the rest of the world. Well, they got a man… and very little has gone right ever since. They’re still mere children… I think it‘s what they’re eating these days… hormones, pesticides, immunizations of all kinds, antibiotics, it’s a wonder anyone lives past the age of 30 anymore. The human body is quickly degenerating to the point of becoming worthless. God creates it, we slowly destroy it. Nothing surprising there….

      It’s not really a “sign of the times”. The youngest mother on record was five when she had her child… in 1939! She had been menstruating since she was 3. Some girls develop really, really early (although this example is rather extreme).

      I wonder where the 10-year old’s father is in all of this. He might need some heel stringin’ himself. Perhaps the mother (grand) isn’t completely responsible for this situation all by herself.

      And actually yes, girls are going through puberty as early as 10 or 11 these days…My ex-girlfriends youngest daughter is 12, and is more developed than some of the 18 year olds that I used to date!!! And society is telling them to go out and use this “new toy” they’ve grown into!!!

      10 years old is freakishly early (I agree there’s something else behind this pregnancy) but the number of early teen mexican girls with babys around here is also very common now…and we’re talking mamacita at 13 years old being not uncommon at all!

      @ mr logan…..ok birth control given to 10 year old…..think about that. some over the counter medications have warning about giving it to children under twelve…..BIRTH CONTROL?! even if it was free, it’s not safe for a little one to be on such medication.

      Yes, that’s right, it is conservative’s fault that this 10 year old girl got pregnant! Never mind the parent’s responsibility to make sure that their 10 year old daughter is NOT having sex!! Or the parent’s responsibility to teach their children what is right and what is wrong! Typical liberal! Blame someone else for your failures! MAN UP MRLOGAN!! Take some responsiblility!       I’m not blaming conservatives. It is sick beyond reason that a ten year old would get pregnant, but let’s take this to America, with 16-19 year old girls who are consenting. The same thing happens, they get pregnant but aren’t ready to be mothers. My point is that conservatives were upset about the potential of free birth control but then get equally upset about young mothers. I’m against abortion, but I think birth control should be made more available to young women.
