Obama Rejects Keystone XL Oil PipelineReports surfaced Wednesday afternoon that President Barack Obama would announce his opposition to the Keystone XL oil pipeline.

The Washington Post first reported that the administration planned to announce Wednesday afternoon that they would reject the application from TransCanada to build and operate a large oil pipeline across the U.S.-Canada border. A source familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that the rejection will likely come from the State Department which has been charged with reviewing the project, and a joint statement will come from some of the larger unions and environmental groups in support of the decision.

The Post notes that the administration is willing to allow TransCanada to reapply if it develops an alternate route through the sensitive habitat of Nebraska’s Sandhills.

Officials in the House Speaker’s office tell CNN that they have not yet been informed of the White House’s decision, but Speaker Boehner said today in regards to anticipation of the decision, “This is not good for our country. The president wants to put this off until it’s convenient for him to make a decision. That means after the next election. The fact is the American people are asking the question right now, ‘Where are the jobs?’”

Bloomberg reports that labor unions and Republicans supported the pipeline, which would carry 700,000 barrels of crude oil a day from Canada’s Alberta oil sands to refineries along the U.S. Gulf of Mexico coast. The coalition argued that the pipeline would create jobs and help the nation become more energy independent.

Environmentalists have opposed the project, saying it will contribute to greenhouse-gas emissions and endanger drinking water supplies in Nebraska.

There was much debate about the pipeline at the end of last legislative session when Republicans attached a clause to the payroll tax cut extension during negotiations that pressured the administration to make a decision on the pipeline permit within 60 days.

The White House had originally tried to push the decision back until after the coming presidential election.

Update (5:35 p.m.)

President Obama released a statement Wednesday declaring that a February deadline set by Congress would not allow for a proper review of potential harm from the $7 billion Keystone XL project.

“As the State Department made clear last month, the rushed and arbitrary deadline insisted on by congressional Republicans prevented a full assessment of the pipeline’s impact, especially the health and safety of the American people, as well as our environment,” Obama said in the statement.

“As a result, the Secretary of State has recommended that the application be denied.  And after reviewing the State Department’s report, I agree. ”

Speaker of the House John Boehner and a group of congressional Republicans held a press event Wednesday condemning the president’s decision, and accusing him of breaking his promise to create jobs:

AP reports that Newt Gingrich, campaigning for the GOP presidential nomination in South Carolina, called Obama’s decision “stunningly stupid,” adding: “What Obama has done is kill jobs, weaken American security and drive Canada into the arms of China out of just sheer stupidity.”

Mitt Romney called Obama’s decision “as shocking as it is revealing,“ adding that it ”shows a president who once again has put politics ahead of sound policy.”

Russ Girling, TransCanada’s president and chief executive officer, told AP that the company plans to comply with the State Department’s suggestion to submit a new application once a route through environmentally sensitive areas of Nebraska is established. If approved, the pipeline could begin operation as soon as 2014, Girling said.

      I have been expecting this decision because the last thing the dim’s want is for the U.S. to have a source of energy from Canada that creates jobs and makes the middle east oil imports go down! If you can’t see what is going on with our government by now you haven’t the capacity too! This government and when I say government I mean more then just Obama and his people. We are faced with a lot of people that are on both sides that make decisions in favor of the current agenda.       I agree .. my parents immigrated from Canada to the US after WWII … we had been in the US from early 1600′s til after the Revolutionary War (I had two Grandfathers who fought FOR INDEPENDENCE) Now I wonder if I should try to immigrate back … I was born in the U.S. in 1955 .. My father died in his 80′s and my mother will be 90 this year .. hopefully I have many years to live and I don’t want to live under Marxists.

      The House Can Pass A Rule Establishing A Congressional Private Corporation That Will Build A Oil Pipe Line. Th House would then sell its Oil to private US companies thus bypassing Obama. When Obama leaves, the House can transfer its pipeline to a private pipeline company.

      I looked at a map which shows hundreds if not thousands of miles of pipelines runing above the Ogallala Aquifer & it wouldn‘t take a genius to figure out that one more wouldn’t hurt anything.

      Its not our own oil, its Canada’s. The pipeline was going to travel across areas portected for drinking water and water for livestock and grain. The pipeline’s risk for USA outwighed any benefit. Canada had few risks.

      Where were you folks when obama stopped all new mining in the west. Some of these mining companys started their process back when Bush was president. Here on Oklahoma obama has stopped all drilling. If the EPA finds anything wrong they fine you $35,000.00 a day. This can be for a leak or a broken fence that will only keep cows out – not kids.

      Im in the operations end of the oilfield and I can tell you this is all being way over sensationalized. To those concerned about aquifers… I realize that many aspects of the US oilpatch are working at about a 1970′s level of safety and controls vs ours in Canada (though we go overboard), but there are controls available and pipelines (especially of this size and moving this volume) dont run without safeties. In sensitive areas up here we often have an ESD (emergency shut down) valve every kilometer. We have leak detection systems that can monitor pressure fluctuations all along the line and if something ever did break (which is extremely rare and usually involves a line strike) the whole line shuts in and at a maximum you lose only what is in that short leg of line.

      As to selling our oil to China, I honestly hope we do start selling to them. At a minimum its going to take 3 years to build either line. Canada is too dependent on exports to the US right now and its not healthy. We need to diversify to decrease the impact of events in the US on our economy. That said, i hope both are built and we can sell to whoever gives us better price (though ideally we would run build up our own refining infrastructure and then sell the refined product), although we get screwed as far as NAFTA is concerned we are required to export a certain percentage to the US at a fixed rate which sucks for us.

      Regardless neither line will be even begun for at least another year likely

      We can’t drill in the Tongas, we can’t drill in the gulf, we can’t drill off of the west coast. Now we can’t pump the oil in from Canada, so they will sell it to the Chinese. The Arabian countries will laugh like hell and raise the price on a barrel, and go buy another Rolls Royce.
      Obumbler will laugh at the American People and give us more Hope and Change. Hope we have at least some change left after filling up.
      Then Obumbler will find some more green energy companies to loan tax payer dollars to so that they kcan fail and contribute to the DNC. The DNC will laugh all the way to the bank

      Number one, to all you greenie morons out there. It would take at least 2 centuries to develop TRUE green energy alternatives. In the mean time, we need to drill our own oil, and yes BUILD THE KEYSTONE PIPELINE. The pipeline project itself would create an almost immediate 20000 jobs just for the construction, not to mention the 250000 to 500000 jobs that would be created for housing, feeding, and entertaining the construction crews, not to mention the full time maintenance crews that would be traveling instpection the pipeline as long as it is in use. But the obahitlerstalinmao admin DOES NOT CARE ABOUT JOBS AND NEVER HAS. Its main goal is the destruction of the US.

      canada is going to build another pipeline to the west coast. the chinese, japnese and other pacific rim countries will be lining up to buy the oil and of course china will pay for the oil with u.s. dollars as long as they have any value. the pump price of gas has doubled since obama took office it is going to go much higher and the economy will certainly collapse. who gave the president authority to do what he is doing? the u.s. is now a dictatorship. when the votes of the people count for nothing then you have only one way out.

    Does this surprise anyone here? Obama and the dems, even the repubs, are not for the average American. All they’re looking for is a way to stay in power. They will tell us one thing and do the opposite. Nothing good is going to come from the up-coming elections. I really believe we are going to see contrived fighting in the streets of America that will cause Obama to declare Marshal Law. They’ll start rounding up us Bible beating (or not), gun toting Americans and either line us up on the lip of a freshly dug ditch, then put a bullet in the base of our skulls, or will ship us off to the “FEMA Camps”.     Obama will force Canada to build the pipe line to the west coast and sell to China. This guy will cost the American people billions of dollars. I have never in my life seen the US Government get involved in a pipeline. Obam is deplorable. Everytime someone fills up at the pump they can thank the miserable excuse for a president for about a 15 cent a gallon increase in fuel. The Chinese are buying the tar sands expecting this crap.

      Lots of luck to the Canadians building a pipeline across their county. They have a lot of opposition too. It has to go over their Rockies. This stuff was never going to end up in our pumps anyway, It was going to end up on the international market..All we would have got stuck with was the clean-up if it ever broke.
      Besides we’re a “net exporter” of gasoline. We’re “awash” in it, cause we don’t use enough. Why the heck are the prices high?

    Whether this pipeline happens or not, this country will ALWAYS be dependent on foreign oil. Tar sands are awful for a multitude of reasons. Any of Beck’s sheeple that fancy themselves hunters or fishermen or enjoys the outdoors should be against tar sands. Any of Beck’s sheeple that enjoy fresh, clean water should be against tar sands. Just look at the net energy return of tar sands, it’s nearly one!!! Please please please Beck’s sheeple, do your own research, form your own opinion, don’t get caught up in your emotions.       Tar sands oil is a Canadian project, Fracking process is NOT tar sands oil. Yes, water is used to cause the traped oil to be collected and pumped to the surface for transport to refineries. To stop developement of natural resources especially for America’s use is flat out Treason! Don’t give me the EPA logic that fossile fuels are creating all manner of illness and harm to our enviorment. Like our use of the A bomb in WWII, should we have allowed million+/- souls be killed by other means? Should we have indured months more of combat and American lives to “save our enviorment”? Please!
      Every other world leader would leap at the prospect that a massive new energy source was discovered on their lands. We have been cautioned for decades that the era of cheap oil is about to end. Now, an energy/industrial artery has been discovered that debunks the eariler myth of no more oil on American lands. Now our leaders want to deny it’s release to “save the enviorment”?
      This pipe line was vetted and approved as safe and NOT a dangerous exploitation of the areas in question. What happened, Obama happened. It’s politics, nothing else matters to Obama ,his election will be assured when he ‘approves’ of the pipe line around October 2012! He’s a masterfull conniver and will say and do Anything that will cause the Republicans to look foolish or distract from the important issues. America’s energy future be assured until an alternative energy source can be proven. Restore

      Snowwhatever, I think we have proven enough over the decades that pumping oil from one location to another place is very safe. For all the crude being pumped all over the place, you still get to drive your SUV and fly in your jets to your rallies, drive your diesel boats to protest fishermen and all that. Even you should surely recognize that you are spending almost twice the amount on gasoline at the pump to drive to your anti-capitalist rallies as you were before BHO lied to get into office, right?

    I know, I know, it‘s frustrating isn’t it!

    We are a cancer on the face of the Earth. If only ALL of us would pitch in and do our part! We should be regulated to buy hybrid vehicles. It saves on energy by plugging the car into Mom’s garage socket. Electricity is CLEAN! We should all ride our bikes to work. We should promote Ethenol and Wind/Solar Energy.!!

    When you wake up {eventually} in the morning, and turn off the light & TV you left on all night. Don’t you know that that magic socket in the wall is powered by the coal company 50 miles away??? When you ride your bike to work in the MIDDLE of road the opposite side of a big hill and I hit you-you just raised everybody’s vehicle ins. costs. When you pump Ethanol, smugly, into your hybrid car, I hope you realize that our grain crops have been drastically redirected and some of those starving kids in Africa you sponsor, are hungry because the cost of food has been increased due to demand and subsidy redirection. Don‘t forget subsidizing Solar Energy that has yet to stand on it’s own two feet.

    All is well, I’m just a racist/1%/doesn’t appreciate the feelings of Mother Earth/ and all those detailed projections and plans don’t account for anything-Nope, we will NOT build a pipeline because the coyote population might be effected.
