Report: Al Qaeda Linked Sites Post Name & Photo of Ex SEAL Author of Osama Bin Laden Raid Book, Call for His Destruction

Al-Qaeda-linked websites have posted pseudonymous author Mark Owen's real name and photo and called for his "destruction" for his role in the killing of Osama bin Laden. (AP)

Users on several Al-Qaeda-linked websites have posted the name and photo of the former Navy SEAL identified as the author of the forthcoming book about the raid that killed Osama bin Laden and are calling for his “destruction,” NBC News reported.

According to NBC, one website that featured revenge death threats was “Al-Fidda,” which Al-Qaeda uses to distribute messages to the media.

The photo appears to show a special operations soldier holding an automatic rifle during a training exercise, NBC reported. It was not clear where the photo came from.

“No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission That Killed Osama bin Laden,” is set to be released Sept. 11 under the name Mark Owens, a pseudonym for “one of the first men through the door” to bin Laden’s third-floor hideout in the Abottabad, Pakistan compound. Fox News was the first to publish the former SEAL’s name. TheBlaze has chosen not to identify him.

Book publisher Dutton, an imprint of Penguin Group (USA), asked news organizations on Thursday not to publish his identity, citing risks to his personal security.

“Sharing the true story of his personal experience in ‘No Easy Day’ is a courageous act in the face of obvious risks to his personal security,” Dutton spokeswoman Christine Ball told the Associated Press. “That personal security is the sole reason the book is being published under a pseudonym.”

Defense and White House officials have said they were not given the chance to review the book and vet it for possible classified information, opening the author up to potential legal action as well.

In a letter to the active-duty special operations community Thursday, special operations chief and four-star commander Adm. Bill McRaven vowed to take legal action against anyone found to have exposed sensitive information.

“We will pursue every option available to hold members accountable, including criminal prosecution where appropriate,” McRaven in the open and unclassified letter, obtained by the AP.

      I guarantee they will find something… Doesn’t matter if its there or not ,they will find “Something” on this Seal that they deem “classified”.. even if its not there they will twist the truth to fit the specifics.. In a culture where 1 +1 = 4 and up is down,where you can blatantly lie ( hence DWS) without blinking,and just keep walking through an interview while full frontal lying even when called out by the host.. In this unbelievable state of lawlessness in this administration it will happen.. I’m surprised the book is even going to be available to purchase…

    I will stand and defend this man’s right to say anything he wants or write any book he sees fit, but at the end of the day he wrote the book. Freedom isn’t free and there are consequences for all our actions. In such a small group this man had to know his identity would come eventually. If I had written the book especially against my brothers wishes and our code I would expect to be under severe scrutiny and danger. I know he felt he needed to write the book but I can’t help but wonder if he thought about his family past the money aspect or how he was going to protect them knowing the nature of his book.

      Now how can some goat herders in Afghanistan get intel that even American media can’t get? Just how did they get his name and picture? If they are that good, they should have known the SEALs were coming the day they got Bin Laden. I mean we can’t even figure out if our Kenyan president was born in the US or not, but these cavemen know who wrote this book. Maybe we should ask them if they can get a legit copy of Obama’s birth certificate.

      Loriann, it really does change your perspective, doesn’t it? It seperates what is really important from everything else. I was known to be a very easy person to get along with, and tended to keep peace around me, buy my years and cancer have taught me to speak up, and fight for right while I have time. I hope I have plenty more to help this country I love so much, and the family I love so much. I don‘t know if this guy is really so foolish to put his family in harm’s way, or what, but all our guys in the family tend to keep their mouths shut.

    Whether the guy should have written this book or not, the al Qaeda fatwa on him shows the generally high level of bravery of that group. I’m sure that they feel like really tough guys herding their goats and beating their wives, but they can’t stand and fight. If they decide to play dirty there are plenty of red blooded Americans who can play just as dirty.

    Even Though I personally felt that the book should not be released until all pertinent information was removed that had any thing to do with secrets and security, I blame FOX news for releasing his name and putting this man in danger. I always watch FOX and normally go along with what they say. This time they went to far. That was a mistake. This man had a job to do and he did it and, as I understand, he was good at his job. I don‘t know his reasoning for writing the book but that’s not important now. His safety is. This administration, of course, is going to try to disassociate themselves from any thing to do with it, for political reasons. It wouldn’t surprise me if it had not already been leaked by the white house. I feel a deep concern for the man but he brought it on his self. I can only hope that nothing happens to him. With all of the radicals in this country and government, his chances doesn’t look that good of coming out alive. The government is going to try to prosecute him or the Al Qaeda is going to kill him.       Jennifer Griffin I .understand “broke” the story on Fox (?) I was watching the tube at my mom’s the other day and she was in Afganistan and was interviewing a commander regarding the recent killings of American Soilders (oh, excuse me….NATO soilders who happen to be Americans) and the reasons for their being killed. I was blown away by one of her questions. She asked something to the afffect of whether or not the soilders were killed because of some cultural taboo they had crossed…..excuse me!!!! Cultural taboo? We are at war! And she is making excuses for our soilders being killed and blaming OUR OWN SOILDERS for their own deaths saying that it must have been/might have been their own fault?

      With it being Griffin who broke the story…. I really wonder more and more about exactly how it is that Fox/she got the name of the author and why it is she who broke the story.

      BLAZE….DO YOU HAVE THE COURAGE TO DIG DEEEPER INTO THIS QUESTION EVEN IF IT MEANS STEPPING ON SOMEONE’S TOES AT FOX? Sorry….but I really believe there is a story behind the story in this one!

    My question then is: Why has Obama and certain members of his administration not been charged with treason for exposing sensitive information on the same subject?

    It is my thought that once Obama loses the election, which he will, and leaves office, a special proscuter should be put in place to investigate and prosicute Obama for all of the laws he has violated.

      Apparently, SOMEONE is tracking us right now on this very thread. When I reloaded this page a few minutes ago, my browser was redirected through sana.newsinc.com. SANA is the Syrian Arab News Agency, but if I can see them so easily, without even trying, I am very suspicious that this is just a ruse by an agency closer to home.

      I have nothing to hide and no reason to fear any moreso than the next American citizen, but this is very suspicious, and I am pretty PO’ed. My number one pet peeve in all the world is for someone to try to manipulate me or to think they can outsmart or control me through psychological and/or intellectual means.

      I will not be a pawn even for my own incredibly condescending and shameless government. If they want something from me, they should just ask.

      Does anyone else know what the hell this is all about?

      No, I have not. And I have had no more incidents to report, either.

      My WTF meter is pegging off the charts though. I have no idea what that was about, but it was creepy enough for me to raise the alarm, and I am not typically an alarmist.

      That website is blocked. If you google it, it is the first result, but robots.txt blocks it. I don’t pretend to know much about hacking and such, but I’m no idiot, and I have no spyware or extraneous software that might have caused the redirect. This whole thing is just fishy/creepy. I was hoping that someone more knowledgable about such things might be able to provide some info here.

      I have had problems on this site from time to time.The last was thirty minutes ago.Keep telling me to log on.I was already logged on.Due to the nature of what I used to do my puter is rather safe.I use a antikeylogger regulary.It showed clean and negative.Yet every time until this post I have had to go back and retype every other sentence even words at times.This is the only site this happens at.It also doesn’t happen in non network use.Its as though someone is using capture screen and retyping over it and the person typing is horrible at it.
