Report: Army To Spy On Soldiers‘ Email To Combat ’Internal Threats’

“Big Army” is about to meet “Big Brother.”Army To Spy On U.S. Soldiers Email With DARPA Program

U.S. Soldiers’ emails will be under cyber surveillance as part of a new Defense Department project to help detect potential “insider threats” from  traitors or terrorists operating inside the military, according to the Military Times.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is trying to building “a suite of algorithms that can detect multiple types of insider threats by analyzing massive amounts of data — including email, text messages and file transfers — for unusual activity,” according to a statement from the Georgia Institute of Technology, which is helping develop the system.

The impetus for the system comes in response to the Fort Hood shooting and the publication of the Wikileaks documents online. Two army servicemen, Major Nadal Hasan and Private Bradley Manning, faces charges for those incidents.

DARPA’s website describes the project, officially known as the Anomaly Detection at Multiple Scales program, as “insider threat detection in which malevolent (or possibly inadvertent) actions by a trusted individual are detected against a background of everyday network activity,” according to the agency’s website.

While DARPA officially recognizes the program, its personnel will not give additional information on its scope and possible further applications to the civilian world. A DARPA spokesman told Military Times he was:

“Unable to provide further information about the project, to include whether the tracking will be limited to official government computers; when such monitoring could begin; or how many troops might be monitored during the development phase, which is slated to take two years.”

The program will also track soldiers’ downloads and keystrokes to create a list for of necessary “further investigations.”

Some military experts believe threats inside the Department of Defense from traitors, terrorists, and saboteurs are on the rise.

Your defense of your statement about Oath Keepers shows how you are completely wrong or ignorant of the mission of the group. You need to either do some original research or just relegate yourself to those that are just too ignorant to comment.

See this is how it works, soldiers can fight and die defending your rights guaranteed under the constitution, but somehow they’re not afforded those rights,ie the fourth amendment,so it’s a very big deal. If the government has probable cause get a warrant, but with the patriot act and the national defense authorization act,one unconstitutional law and another on deck, our rights are being stripped away daily and these idiots in congress are about to pass the ndaa.

Whose protecting us from the governent? The Army does not own our Military. Our Military men and women do not give up their Constitutional rights when they enlist to serve their country.
These puts great concerns into the hearts of the relatives of our children serving here and abroad.

The gov’t basically fired Sheriff Arpaio and his deputies from enforcing the laws concerning immenient threat of illegal entry by criminals and terrorists through the Federal Governement sanctioned unprotected borders. Mexico had not protected their side, they were busy handing out maps and water and funding illegal migration. Plus do not forget funding major fire power putting it in the hands of drug dealers, Mexican cartel and other anti-american terror groups. The gov’t replaced these deputies with goverment enforcers. I think one enforcer to take the place of 72 people. I think the number was.
Another article here a few days ago reported the Mexican (powerless Caulderon) President firing all the police in one city also and replacing all of them with government enforcers. Now the border protection is being critically downsized. Think this is related? Is the big blood bath holocaust that Piven keeps calling for this? That hordes of angry hispanics loaded for bear will be storming our American citizens, while our military children are being spyed on? If the Progressives have got this far, you think an election is going to stop them? Service people (children) need to watch their bac

Who is running America? Have you ever asked that question?

Under the doctrine of Parens Patriae, “Government As Parent”, as a result of the manipulated bankruptcy of the United States of America in 1930, ALL the assets of the American people, their person, and of our country itself are held by the Depository Trust Corporation at 55 Water Street, NY, NY, secured by UCC Commercial Liens, which are then monetized as “debt money” by the Federal Reserve.

America as a bankrupt nation is owned completely by its creditors.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlCs7u1ihws

The creditors own the Congress, they own the Executive, they own the Judiciary and they own all the State governments. Do you have a Birth Certificate? They own you too.

    Do your Research.

The only formula for Freedom End the Federal Reserve PRIVATE bank as our Central Bank
and to DEFY a International UCC Lien. If the UN wants to call NATO on us, as retaliation, so be it.
    LIVE FREE or DIE !!!!
I am NOT property of a Nation or a Corporation.
How in the #ell did they ever get the authority to pledge my life and income as collateral on a debt ????

They were censored back then to prevent vital information from getting out by mistake. What is being described here is the government looking at some of our military personnel as potential terrorists like Nidal Hassan, but Hassan wasn’t a terrorist. According to the DOJ it was just workplace violence. Also, to the other guy saying this is like workplace email censoring…. no, my employer is not checking to see if I’m going to attack them, again it’s securing proprietary information and protecting their networks.

The difference is that we live in an electronic age. Data isn’t just censored; it’s collected, collated; referenced; cross-referenced; interpreted; etc. A shave-tail LT in 1944 censoring love letters from the front wasn’t keeping a list of who sent it, where it was going, what was in it, what was objectionable, then checking the personal background of the sender and recipient, cross-referencing that with other mail intercepted from a particular unit, etc.

Yeah – it’s the same thing.

If the military really wanted to help the people who by the way is the government, why don’t they investigate this so called president, his commrads, and the organization(s) which he has set up to thwart and destroy the economy, our way of life, our stature, amd our structure. Now that would be motivating and I willing to bet that they would find a well organized socialistic/communistic underground network leading up to and into our White House. Yep, I‘ve been wondering for a couple of years now why the military hasn’t moved on this.

This was again done on purpose by the traders inside. Same concept of fast and furious in an attempt to take away our guns. We’ve know for a long time that they have been filing our Military with Communist/Muslim TRADERS. Why? Because then they can keep surveillance on the good men in our Military. They should be very afraid of the whole Country raising up against the destruction of our Constitution and freedom.

      2. If DARPA is worried about insiders in the Executive Department intent on taking down the government from the inside, they’re looking in the wrong buildings. That one is at 1600 Pennsylvania.
      3. Finally, there will be people who look at this and think it’s fantastic- not realizing the implications. This is the American government spying on the American people, without a warrant and without cause.

Government employees, service members included, are warned that anything they do and anywhere they go on a Government issued computer is the business of the Government. Government employees, civilian and military, sign away some of our rights when we become Government employees. We know this will happen, but we place service to our country above the inconvenience to ourselves. There have been attempts to recruit service members to groups that oppose the Government, militias being the most dangerous group. I worry about people like Major Hassan, but I also worry about groups like “Oathkeepers” who are seditious to their core. I don’t approve of what DARPA is probably doing, but I knew I could be monitored when I signed up for the job. I swore to protect my country from all enemies, foreign and DOMESTIC.

@Military Nurse, You’ve joined an organization that will decide whether it will follow orders issued by superiors. From my research, Oath Keepers is just another reincarnation of the militia movement, made up mostly of Whie, pseudo-Conservative, Christian Fundamentalists with a fondness for guns. You’ve already decided the Government is your enemy or at least it will ask you to do things against your fellow “patriots”. From what I read here on The Blaze, most of you would shove the nearest Muslim, native born or not, into a gulag at the first chance. And many of you would love to take my rights to freedom of speech or assembly away at the drop of a hat. You can’t “save the Constitution” by choosing to destroy it. So many of you talk about the Constitution and how important it is, but you would have no problem violating the rights of some people if they didn’t meet with your approval as “citizens”. Being a Liberal is not a crime. Being a militia member may not be a crime, but I will tolerate your right to belong up until it becomes a crime, taking up arms against the government or advocating such. I happen to believe in Government, I think it has the power, and indeed the duty to protect it‘s citizens and it’s residents, even if they aren’t citizens. Funny, I’m often told, by pseudo-Conservative folks, that I’m un-American when I believe in the First Amendment. But they’re just being patriotic when they attempt to strip others of those First Amendment R

That is the heart of the evil in any tyranical state… Oh I was just following orders to confiscate guns, beats woemn and children, and whatever evil orders might be given. @Rightallalong, No, I respect the military enough to believe they would not issue such orders in the first place. Some of the people most opposed to the Constitutional violations of the Bush Administration were General Officers in our military. I also think that most “Oath Keepers” would have no problem throwing Liberals, immigrants and non-Christians into a gulag, but would refuse to arrest or detain fellow militia members or at least White, Christian, English speakers. As I said, Oath Keepers are just a redress of the militia movement of the 1990s, but they have been given more respect and favorable coverage in the age of Fox News and the Rightwing blogosphere.

You know: seeing why the Founding Fathers wanted all debt to be paid in silver and gold, and seeing why it was important to have a Central Government that extends “Liberty” and yet protection to exist to the several states, states whereby each cater through representation to their own religious and ethnic populations? At last someone in the Counterintelligence world has discovered the biggest security hole we have. Years ago, the military monitored radio and telephone communications — that was called “COMSEC” (communications security). I’ve sat on the receiving end of hundreds of hours of conversations over military owned or leased lines and on military radio frequencies and heard endless numbers of security violations. The only place which was “safe” from our monitoring was a 25 mile radius of the Capitol Building — too many opportunities for intercepting the “private” conversations of our lawmakers as they went about their business of selling the USA down the river and other traitorous behavior. Anyway, I’m not sure if this COMSEC procedures would have caught Manning and his ilk .. it is evident from reading the open source information about the Article 31 investigation that the Counterintelligence Officer responsible for the SCIF (Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility) where Manning worked failed her duties. Allowing DVD’s, music CD’s USB stick drives in and out of the SCIF! Fred Jenkins at DIA OS-2a must be rolling over in his grave at supersonic speed.

The problem is that such things used to occur during “Times of War”, now since we do not have declared wars by Congress, we just have perpetual wars created through fear, war-hype, false-flags and our so called political leaders. Everyday is a war, and the US is now considered part of the battlefield (NDAA). THis puts the US in a position where these ‘Security Rules’ can be used at anytime, on anyone … why doesn’t the GIVERment just call it what it is – Martial Law.

Time for everyone to accept that we are no longer land of the free and home of the brave – Now we are land of the cowards (willing to give up all our freedoms for a false sense of security) and home of the slaves (working 50% of our life to pay the GIVERment, the political Elite, and federal reserve).

You ought to realize that there are some who will. Whether or not you believe that doesn’t affect me at all. I’m not going to come out with my hands up and relinquish my firearms to anyone.

      Period.

      You do what you want.

You ought to stop believeing everything your government tells you. Your “that’ll never happen” attitude is going to get you killed or placed in a FEMA Camp. This is not a damn joke or a highschool cafeteria for you to make little snide remarks for giggles. Grow up and stop being naive.

      Your government is criminal.

@ Texasfireguy – Yes they will. I’ve spoken with many of them that have no problem firing on other Americans. I, myself, am an Army Vet and know first hand that many of them don’t think about upholding the Constitution every morning when they get up. It’s probably one of the furthest things from their minds. Heck, many of them would get a thrill to take on civilian Americans to see if we‘re any better than the Taliban or Iraqi’s.

V- You need to read sections 1604 through 1608 where it talks about Northcomm taking over National Guard units and Commanders in the regular Army will also be officers in the Guard, basically getting around Posse Comitatus.

Rot soldier, I guess we served in different militaries then. I was taught that the oath I took meant something, and that violating that oath would put me in jail. The excuse ‘ I was following orders’ didn’t work or the nazis or any other time it was tried.
It’s not the members of the military are from another country or planet. They are Americans, and anyone who thinks that they would shoot civilians or round them up for the mythical ‘FEMA camps’ or invade their homes to take their guns are just delusional. The military takes it oath and the constitution VERY seriously. More seriously thanout elected officials do I’m afraid.

TexasFireGuy – I know its hard for you to believe that the government that you served as become a force that should be feared but you need to start looking a bit deeper into the gun confiscation during Katrina, the check-points in Tenn, the training for gun Confiscation in Iowa etc etc.

My father served during WWII and cannot accept that the government is now using tactics that were only used by the East Germans, Soviets, etc, but that does not make it true. You can choose to do some real research and then you can chose to believe or live in denial. Start researching the executive orders allowing the government to take over roads, food, property in times of war or crisis – NDAA makes the USA a battle field so they can execute it any time they want …

When and if the time comes I do hope youa re on the side of Freedom and Liberty and don’t follow blindly the orders of our corrupt leaders.

If they can do this within the military they can and will use this in the civilian world.
NDAA has made the US a battlefield and I would assume that makes us suspects and/or soldiers.

Since WWI, the Military has censored mail to eliminate any potential intelligence. As CO of my Military Intelligence Detachment in Viet Nam, I had to censor outgoing mail. This is nothing new.

I am sorry, but when you are in the military you are the military. I am prior service myself and I understood that when I joined. That is it and if an individual doesn’t realize that when going into service, then they shouldn’t join. There is nothing you can do or say about it for in the service there is no secrets or privacy and that is good. The military is a honor to join, but UCMJ (Uniformed Code of Military Justice) is the dominant guideline with the orders from one’s chain of command being the direction. Simple put, a service member is just that with no privacy for their life affects the lives of the unit. So the scanning of emails should be done, especially depending on what the job designation or MOS describes as job duties.

The Obama Administration is opposed to the controvertial provision in the NDAA, stating that the power was already given to the Executive Branch by the Authority for Use of Military Force (AUMF) passed by the Bush Administration in 2001, and does not need to be further codified. Tell me, be honest, did this power bother you when Bush was wielding it? I was opposed to it a decade ago, but back then, folks like you said I was being anti-American. Guantanamo is a national disgrace, and the Bush Administration sodimized the Constitution with this and the Patriot Act and other violations.

News to Mom, the civilian world has been monitoring employee emails as long as email became the corporate way too communicate. This is not a new thing. All companies save your emails on the server and back them up for latter retrieval even if you delete your copy if the need arises.

Emails are never sacred or private and never should be treated as such.

While I actually agree with all of you I feel we are playing in a different ball park these days. While I have always distrusted the government, I think events in the past few years, especially under the Obama administration have increased my fears.
My faith in the American idea of freedom of speech is quickly being negated. We are all under the watchful eyes of the government, we are being monitored every time we leave our homes. Are our private e-mails being monitored by the government? I don’t know. Will they be? Probably.
When the Patriot Act was instituted we had just been attacked, war had been declared on us and the PA was supposed to deal only with suspected enemy combatants and supporters. At least that was what we were led to believe.
Now I believe that we are all suspect if we disagree with this administration.
Obama says he will veto NDAA, maybe he will. We‘ll find out soon enough but I don’t believe he will.

The recruitment of gang members is not just the recruiters, but judges that sentence these juvenal delinquents to choose between jail or joining the service. Now with that being said, I have met individuals that said if it wasn’t for that decision, their lives would have been gone. So this is a catch 22 situation.

I guess you don’t realize your employer has the right to review your email sent from corporate computers. This is nothing new guys. If your employer suspects wrong doing on your part they can go back and review every email you sent and received. Some corporations use third-party programs to review for certain wordage in emails and those who meet the criteria are then reviewed.

This is not a loss of liberty, this is a matter of corporate rights to protect themselves. You might want to start reading your corporate policy on email and your right to privacy.

If corporations can monitor and read your email, then so should the military when you use government issued hardware. Don’t like, don‘t join and don’t work for the government.

workplace monitoring for loss of proprietary information and looking for suspected terrorists within your own people are entirely different. Wake up people. It‘s amazing how you’ll make excuses for every tiny bit of freedom they take from you until you have none left.
