Update: Cain Spokesman and Tea Party Express Call Report of Connection in Gingrich Endorsement False

Report: Cains Gingrich Endorsement Was a Result of Tea Party Express Pressure

Former presidential candidate Herman Cain was interviewed on Fox News yesterday morning where he explained his endorsement of former rival Newt Gingrich, commending the former Speaker for his communication skills and embrace of replacing tax codes. Cain said he has nothing against the other remaining Republican presidential candidates, and reiterated that he still endorses “the people,” and his overt support of Gingrich does not interfere with that.

Twenty-four hours later, rumors are spreading that there were more factors in play leading to Cain’s endorsement of Gingrich, one of the last candidates standing vying for the so-called “anti-Romney” vote. Grace Wyler of Business Insider writes:

“Sources familiar with Cain’s decision told Business Insider that the endorsement was the result of pressure from the Tea Party Express, one of the leading organizations supporting the Tea Party movement. According to those sources, Florida-based activists aligned with the Tea Party Express and other groups have launched an all-out blitz to get leaders of the movement to come out in support of Gingrich, in an increasingly desperate attempt to halt Mitt Romney’s surge in the Sunshine State.”

Cain has had a warm relationship with the Tea Party Express, giving its response to the State of the Union last week. However Wyler notes that the former pizza executive’s relationship to the fellow Georgian goes back further than the 2012 election, writing that Gingrich has been praising Cain since the 1990s.

Cain had said Monday that his endorsement decision was made independently, and specified that he did not talk to Sarah Palin or Rick Perry. Palin, another fan favorite of the Tea Party Express, has not officially endorsed Gingrich but has made statements favorable of the former Speaker.

UPDATE(11:45 a.m.)

The Associated Press reports that Cain widened his support Tuesday for whoever secures the Republican nomination for President, perhaps softening his endorsement of Gingrich:

(AP) — Fresh off campaigning for Newt Gingrich in Florida, former candidate Herman Cain says he also would be comfortable supporting Mitt Romney if he’s the one who wins the Republican presidential nomination.

Cain made his remarks as Floridians were heading to the polls Tuesday for their GOP primary.

Cain told NBC’s “Today” show that he endorsed Gingrich and campaigned with him Monday because he found Gingrich’s tax plan similar to his own proposal, dubbed his “9-9-9″ plan.

Cain said he would be “very comfortable” with Romney, too, but that both candidates carry negatives that would be attacked by President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign.

Cain dropped out of the race in early December. He said he wouldn’t run again, joking that his “biological clock is ticking.”

UPDATE 2/5/12 (7:30p.m.)

Representatives for both Herman Cain and the Tea Party Express have been in contact with The Blaze, and say that previous reports that Cain’s endorsement of Newt Gingrich came at the behest of the conservative organization are false.

“Because he was with us for the State of the Union response a couple of days before, I guess it was worthy of speculation,” Tea Party Express Co-founder Sal Russo wrote in an email regarding the suggestion that his organization influenced Cain’s decision. “We believed that he was sticking with his support of ‘we the people.’

“Since we have not endorsed a candidate for President, we certainly wouldn’t have been advocating for any of the candidates.”

Tea Party Express Communications Director Shawn Callahan told The Blaze Sunday that his organization had no conversations with Herman Cain regarding his endorsement of any candidate.

Kathy Hoekstra, Director of Media Relations for Cain’s Solutions Revolution, told The Blaze by phone Sunday that while Mr. Cain espouses and promotes many of the ideas of the Tea Party, his decision to endorse Mr. Gingrich was made independently.

I’ve mentioned that the TEA Party had changed a while ago into just an institutional Republican cheerleading squad, and this is just further evidence of it. Bachmann brought in the Christian Conservative influence, Perry, Cain, and others brought in the institutional Republican influence. Now it’s just a cross section of all the Republicans out there. Easiest way to recognize it is looking at Ron Paul, the Godfather of the TEA Party movement, and how low his poll numbers are for supposed TEA Party members. All this because his foreign policy follows the farewell address of George Washington and doesn’t include the interventionist policies of many of the Progressives.

Beck’s been swerving all over the belief spectrum lately, falling for many of the same traps that convinced people in the past to commit acts that we now look back at with disappointment. It should be no surprise that this has come at the same time Glenn has focused on improving society through promoting religion for it’s morality, when in reality you can teach the morality using reason rather than religion.

Yep, they had. I seen this for a long time as well. Where do you think all the Koche Brothers attacks come from. Not to mention Palin acting like a spokesman and groups like this, Tea Party Express trying to lay claim to the movement, Heck Evangelicals act like they own the Tea party in some exchanges.. Not a single one understood this was a movement , not a group or party. The very instant one tried to organize them is the very second the movement began to be divided. It is like spirituality, if very second you think you got it, you just lost it. I was in Dc with a great many people who made their first ever political activity, but it wasn’t political. I talked with lots of people there, and it is most certainly people like Newt who we despise the most. Those politicians that become a member just to make profit from the power and influence assumed from the position. Newt and Santorum both did this. Sorry, it’s the truth.

      Just to keep it clear.
The original TEA Express was and is Dick “the RINO” Army.

It was devised for all RINO-Business-Cheap Labor and anti-citizen. We owe both parties a punch in the mouth times 300 million or one from each citizen.

The Grass Roots TEA is our own, we are the only Conservative-Constitutional-Patriots in town!

They are not us and we are not them. They are GOP-RINO like Palin, Bush, Romney, Tom Delay, Gonzales, Rice, Cornyn, Hutchison, McConnell, McCain, Cry-Baby, Rubio, and so many more. None of them supports one of our countries foundations of liberty or sovereignty. Bush has been on a speaking tour and continues his attack on our sovereignty. He calls us protectionist for wanting to maintain our borders and the sanctity of the Greatest Nation on Earth.

“W” Bush has holdings in several companies and one of them is trees. They are sending OUR tress to China and will not let OUR people cut them down and process them. Yeah, they ship in foreign national labor. That’s as anti-American as you can get.

They are all Globalist, NWO, No Borders, Offshore, Cheap Labor shipped in, and like Obama hates the middle class.

I agreed with your entire post, until the last part, where you are deadly wrong. You can’t teach morality without religion. If morality doesn’t come from God, it is entirely man produced, and man controlled. Without natural law sourced from a divine creator, reason will produce nothing more then survival of the fittest. Ron Paul’s belief come from his religion, and are entirely copacetic with it. It is truly sad how progressive the Tea Party has become. They are just another organization that doesn’t understand the principles they claim to preach.

      @Matt1776
I understand how you can look to religion to explain how morality be what prevents a dog-eat-dog world. However, I would suggest considering the idea that morality comes from the historical experiences of humans. We’ve learned what works well and protects harmony between humans, and we pass down what we’ve learned. In essence, it’s the process we have found that creates the greatest conditions for humans. Religion can be seen as nearly the same process, where principles are passed down and reinforced with the higher power. The only difference is that religion adds on the fear of God, whereas just the basic principles tell you that it you could go against such principles, but you’re going to make things worse for yourself and others. The fear of a higher power, such as God, can be used against people as well. When those without a greater understanding of morality and principles are told how they should act and someone reinforces it by calling it God’s Will, those individuals can be used to do things that contradict their principles. It’s a terrible manipulation for someone to do, but it’s been done and it will continue to be done. Those with good principles will be good people, but those who follow a religion cannot be guaranteed to be good people.

      Posted on January 31, 2012 at 3:23pm

Also, I’d just say that religions tend to need to evolve over time to adapt to the new experiences and accepted principles that work. I will say that Christianity has adapted over time, whereas Islam has not. I’m sure that in the Bible, there are some quotes that we now just ignore, ones where it promotes males having power over females. As you can see from our culture, both genders now are considered much more equal than before. Islam has not accepted that on a larger scale and fundamentalists are trying to prevent such an evolution of their principles. So, other than debating whether God is necessary to convince people to do the right things in their life, we’re basically the same thing. Just by taking out the religious side, I am saying that I’d accept anyone who believes and follows the same principles that I do (or a large majority of them), whatever their religion may be, if they have one at all. It’s just more open and makes less chance of conflict based upon religion.

So what’s the leverage the Tea Party Express has over Cain in order to “pressure” him?

I used to think “pressure” was an English language word that had a definition.

Here’s an idea of what might be hidden pressure. Maybe the Tea Party Express people have some hot babes of their own they can haul out to say Herman propositioned them and the folks here are privy to that.

Santorum 2012! I am not going to be brainwashed, swayed, or dictated to who to vote for. I stopped watching Fox/MSM months ago, they are part of the problem too.

Couldn’t agree more. Rick Santorum is the true conservative – at least more so than Newt or Mitt. I can’t stand the negative campaigns that both Newt and Mitt are running. I want to hear what you are going to do to beat Obama!!

It’s not wasted if I vote for who I think is best …. I will vote for anyone but Obama in the November election. Santorum WON IOWA … just because the news media has ignored him doesn‘t mean he isn’t the best person .. in fact that pretty much says he IS.

@THE TOAD It’s comments and thinking like yours that has us in the place we are. I will vote my conscious, principles, and values in the primary. I wrote in Ron Paul in 2008 that didn’t work out so well either. This time I will hold my nose and vote for whoever the nominee is. What will you do?!?

@Toad – You certainly are entitled to your opinion as are Cat B and myself! The primary election is about who you feel is right in the general election. In the general election we must/will band behind the republican candidate.

Why wasted? Romney and Gingrich are just opposite ends of the same animal. Might as well vote your conscience in the primary. I already have. Now that it is done I will support whoever the winner of the primary is. Probably Romney. Whatever…Better than Obama…

      @ The Toad

The idea that any vote is a wasted vote is wrong! That is why so many Americans never vote. They have been brain washed into thinking that way.

Well, according to Ann Coulter if Romney was the nominee instead of Christie, “we will lose.” (at the end)

I am a TEA PARTY person and I would NEVER endorse gingrich. As a matter of fact, Herman Cain lost my respect and support by that endorsement.

Selling out NEVER pays well in the end.

If the Tea Party movement now supports a serial adulter, Carbon Taxing, Pelosi snuggling, Big Government progressive republican then we can say the Tea Party has lost its way in terms of its original intent which was to shrink government, reduce spending and secure freedom for the people of the once great United States. Tea Party – RIP

      Right,
I am inclined to agree with you. I thought we would see a tea party start a third party after this election. However, it would seem that the tea party movement has either sold out or been co-opted. If that is the case, the movement is dead.
