Report: Cheating Atlanta Teachers Scandal Could Have Far-Reaching Effects on Economy

As if lying, cheating, and academic dishonesty were not bad enough, the Atlanta public school scandal may cause serious problems outside of the classroom. According to The Atlanta Post, “The Atlanta Public Schools scandal will deeply hamper the city’s efforts to attract new businesses and jobs, perhaps for years, business and company site selection experts say.”

When a company makes a location decision, it usually takes into consideration the area’s quality of education. This is especially true among larger companies with an employee base that has a large number of families.

But if an area once deemed a prime location for setting up business is discovered to have something as low-class as a scandal involving principals and teachers falsifying state standardized tests, that area will be viewed as unfit and it will generally be avoided.

Atlanta must handle this problem carefully. State leaders must resolve the issue, punish the offenders, and restore the integrity of the education system. If they do this successfully, then the impact should be short term.

However, Atlanta’s problem is a big one. 178 Atlanta Public School (APS) teachers and principals have been accused of cheating on state standardized tests, and the fallout will most likely involve drawn out lawsuits and ugly public battles. This may permanently impede growth.

“All things being equal, this one scandal will make a difference on whether a company will move or not,” said Ed McCallum, senior principal of the Greenville, S.C.-based site selection firm McCallum Sweeney Consulting, in the Atlanta Post report.

“This doesn’t mean they won’t consider Atlanta,” he said, “but they will read about this and take a much harder look at the city than they might have before.”

The appointment of APS interim Superintendent Erroll Davis to replace retiring district head Beverly Hall is a prime example of the direct efforts to deal with the scandal. What may also help with APS’ tarnished image is the swift firing of four area superintendents.

“We think it speaks well that the state took action in a pretty deplorable situation,” said Alison Tyrer, a spokeswoman for the Georgia Department of Economic Development, the state’s main business relocation recruiter, the Atlanta Post article.

Tyrer’s boss, Economic Development Commissioner Chris Cummiskey, said: “K-12 education has been a challenge for this state, and the situation at Atlanta Public Schools is abhorrent, but the aggressive response that is being put in place will turn this challenge for the state into an advantage in the long run.”

Chris Clark, president and chief executive officer of the Georgia Chamber, said leaders of Georgia companies who have discussed the scandal with him say the believe the state is handling things well. But they will continue to watch.

“We have got to deal with this quickly and show that we have a plan,” he said.

Atlanta Teachers Scandal Affect Local EconomyThe scandal could not have come at a worse time. Recently, Atlanta has struggled because major companies keep relocating outside the city limits. According to The Atlanta Post, “Instead of going downtown, the job growth of late has been with companies such as NCR Corp., which moved to Gwinnett County from Ohio, and in the numerous technology firms that now call Alpharetta home.”

“The city of Atlanta faces much stiffer competition than it did a decade ago,” said Ron Starner, general manager of Site Selection magazine, an industry periodical.

Scott Taylor, president of the real estate firm Carter, thinks the scandal’s impact will be short-lived because the severity of it will not allow city, state or business leaders to ignore the problem.

“People may not like the truth, but they always want to know the truth,” the Atlanta Post quoted him saying. “It’s going to be a challenge, and there will be bumps in the road. But you’ve got to be transparent, and you have to address the challenges. And more importantly, you have to talk about the opportunities, and I think they are there.”

What we know right now is that 178+ teachers and principals have been accused of cheating hundreds of  students out of a good education. What we have yet to discover is whether or not their dishonesty will also cheat them out of a good job.

We had the dumbest president ever (Yale MBA) for eight years who started this no child left behind crap. It was applied in Atlanta was it not? Hell they were in most cases cheating eight years. If any good comes from this it will be that parents, black & white (there are whites in the Atlanta school system) will pay more attention to their kids and the school system.

      @ r304indy and others,
News Flash! Teachers HATE NCLB!!! It had to be one of the STUPIDEST things Bush ever did. Yes, I know, he didn’t do it alone. BUT, he didn’t have to sign it. It has caused more problems than it will EVER solve. Not all children deserve to be moved on to the next grade. But, try to keep a student back and you get the full wrath of the parents, the Principal and the School Board, because it may hurt the child’s “feelings”.
No Child Left Behind is from the same mental giants that think keeping score in youth sports is a bad thing and there shouldn’t be Winners and Losers. HA! Ask the kids; they always know who won and who lost.
But, why should we make children live in the real world? Who will carry on the idea that a Communist Utopia is not only desirable, but also attainable?
This is why I am a teacher. This is what I FIGHT tooth and nail every day! I guarantee my students know how to think for themselves when I’m done with them.

I can see Obama aswering this question at a town hall meeting. “I can remember being a young boy in Kenya–I mean, Hawaii, Hawaii! Watching my parents going through college, and wondering when it was going to be my turn. When would I get to experience all the advantages of a federally-subsidized education? So I take to heart what has happened recently in Atlanta. These educators who are being accused of cheating on state education tests are simply combatting layoffs and budget cuts by the regional Republican legislature, many of them friends of the former president George Bush. And studies have shown that questions on these standardized tests are slanted toward the financially-advantaged white students. So there is another disadvantage against the inner-city students. So what I am going to do is this: Next week, I will be signing an Executive Order that will allow the teachers of financially-disadvantaged districts to give some of the grades that the wealthier students earn to some of the other students, who may have had to work hard at home, and not had the opportunity to come to class as often as others. In my America there are no losers. And everyone knows that it’s better for everyone when we spread the grades around.”

Did you know that some McDonalds are allowing applicants to have someone else fill the application out because they can’t read? Now, this may work to your advantage when getting your change back. They probably can’t count either.
What the HELL is going on in MY country?
And what’s this BS about the tests being unfairly slanted toward wealthy white kids? Um, yeah. Please define those terms. The reason “minorities” don’t do as well is because of the culture of indifference toward education many have. They don’t care if their children do well in school. My wife came from a family like this. She didn’t whine about it; she took the initiative and made sure she passed. She speaks perfect English, not “Ghetto-speak”. She has worked in the medical field for over thirty years. So don’t give me this “poor minority” crap.
Besides, most of these “poor minorities” have no idea what “poor” is. They have subsidised housing, food stamps, televisions, computers, and better cell phones than I do.
I have been to places in the world where actual poor people live. I have seen families of eight sharing an eight foot by ten foot corrigated tin shack. They would think they hit the lottery to have half of what “poor” Americans have.

The Department of Education needs to go, among a lot of others. What has it, or the teachers’ unions, done to improve real education? They’re fine at indoctrination so you know they can get a job done. Atlanta is probably average for corruption.

      @George,

The scary part of this problem of pushing underperforming and uneducated students through school is that it goes on in colleges too. My daughter who graduated from a NJ college about 12 years ago was shocked by the number of students in her university classes who were unable and ill-prepared to do basic work. When they were assigned group projects, she would end up doing all the work because the other kids were unable to contribute. At the end of the project they would all get the same grade.

She said most of these kids would have never been able to graduated from her Catholic HS let alone college. Yet 4-5 years later there they were standing next to her and marching up to get the sheepskin/degree.

I wonder if some of those college classmates ended up as Atlanta teachers?

I live in Atlanta. There will be alot of fanfare, alot of “changes”. But Atlanta schools are almost all black and these teachers will fight for their jobs. Maybe some changes, but most will just be transferred to other schools. I saw on our local channel that these teachers make about 64,000.00 per year, and they will be paid their salary, as well as the school system paying for their replacements. It will become too expensive, and I think they will just disipline some, move them to other schools. I will be very surprised if there really is a complete turn around. I do not want to sound ugly or prejudice, but they cover up and take care of their own. As, for many years the whites did. Sad.

I’ve lived in and taught in Forsyth County, the next county north of ATL, and both of my brothers live there now, one lured away from the cess-pool of California, a state his wife had never been out of in her life until she married him… so it was a big move for her, and the change in schools has been wonderful for their three kids, especially the one who had quite the swollen head from being the most brilliant and talented child in all her classes in CA, and finding herself unremarkable in Forstyh County. She’s having to put more effort into her laurels now which has made her a lot more bearable.

Forsyth has wonderful schools and is already a bedroom community for ATL. Honestly, I don’t think this story is very honest because any company considering moving to ATL will certainly learn of the quality schools in the communities just outside of Atlanta. Nobody in their right minds wants to live in the city itself
      anyway.

The local news is our “daily body count” of minority-on-minority violence. City of Atlanta has been corrupt my entire life going back to the 70′s and Maynard Jackson…. You see, the cornerstone of liberal thinking is that it is not FAIR that people should have to compete. It is not FAIR that some have more ability than others. It is not FAIR that some are eager to invest in themselves and work hard while others are eager to waste time and become society’s beggers. So, to level the playing field we shall sit the poor child who has not prepared next to the LUCKY child who has prepared. Then the poor unlucky child can crib answers from the LUCKY hard working child and the universe will be balanced and good.

This liberal ethos is rampant in our society and fully supported by our public schools. We are truly doomed.

I will disagree with that. Liberals all know the black kids can’t compete academically. They know there is nothing they can do to make those kids smarter, but by complaining about them so much the kids become a good cash cow. Also, since the kids can’t learn any more, and since the teachers need to keep their jobs, the teachers become basically baby sitters or let them do whatever they want and pass them along.

Chicago~ Not accurate. There are all kinds of things that can be done to give ghetto kids the ability to succeed in school. The problem is not with intellect, it is with parents who don’t care enough to create a stable family environment before they start popping out the babies, then don’t care enough to make an effort to even teach them basic things like their colors and shapes and how to count higher than 2 before they start school, and then once they start school, don’t care enough to follow up on their behavior, their homework, and sometimes don’t even care enough to get out of the &$#!!@#!% bed and walk the kid across the street to school. Genetically, there is not a thing wrong with these kids at all. Culturally, there is some serious cancer going on. What can be done for these kids to help them succeed in school? Take them away from their under-aged, crappy, apathetic, welfare-leach parents and give them to people OF ANY COLOR who will raise them in a stable, caring, family environment.

In the 1950′s, when closing up all those pesky one-room schoolhouses that educatedchildren to 8th grade, equivalent to 1st year college level, the gov‘t promised that centralized schools would never be influenced by the US Gov’t. Probably, the one main reasonno nation has ever been able to defeat ours;is because of the decentralization of our elected power. We must decentralize our schools to save our children. Fire them all. Get rid of the DOE (Dept. of Education), and implement private schools. Give parents their money back and the ability to choose the school they want to send their kids to. Privatize education and it will be better for everyone. If the schools had been privatized, something like this most likely would not happen, and, if it did, it wouldn’t take months of litigation… the teachers and anyone else involved would be fired on the spot.
