Report: China Building Aircraft Carriers for Regional Power Projection

While the U.S. is mired in political wrangling and a stagnant economy, China has made the possibly game-changing strategic decision to build its own aircraft carriers.
The Washington Times is reporting that Pentagon officials believe China is now building at least one if not two indigenous aircraft carriers, and may be working on more in the near future. Reuters reported last week that an unnamed Chinese official claimed “two aircraft carriers are being built at the Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai.”
This indigenous carrier construction is in addition to a confirmed Soviet-era aircraft carrier China purchased from Ukraine called the Varyag that has almost completed its refitting for use in “scientific research, experiment, and training,” according to the Chinese government. When it was originally purchased in 1998, the Chinese claimed the Varyag would be turned it into a floating casino.
The BBC reported this past June on the Varyag here, calling it one of China’s worst kept secrets (google images provided clear photos of the vessel). But an enhanced version of the vessel may be launched any day now, marking the first time China would have an operational aircraft carrier on the open sea.
Other than the aged Varyag, it is not currently clear how many carriers China is building, or plans to build, but it appears likely that plans for two or three carriers are underway. A Chinese Ministry of defense spokesman told reporters this past Wednesday that ”Building…aircraft carriers is a sacred responsibility of China’s armed forces,“ but added that ”both overestimation and underestimation of China’s future aircraft carrier have been wrong.”
China’s production of aircraft carriers comes amidst already heightened tensions in t
he region with neighbors such as Vietnam, Japan, and the Philippines- all of whom have had diplomatic incidents with Chinese resulting from boat crashes and maritime territorial disputes. These countries are concerned that aircraft carriers would allow China to assert supremacy in disputed waters including the South China sea and Yellow Sea. Japan is boosting its submarine production in response to what it sees as provocations by China.
It is also well-known in the region and around the globe that China is building up its military capabilities across the board. As the Washington Times reports it, China’s military is:
“engaged in a large-scale buildup that includes new strategic and conventional missiles, aircraft, anti-satellite weaponry and a new ballistic missile for targeting ships at sea.”
The U.S., on the other hand, is looking at up to a trillion dollars of defense cuts over the next decade, including possibly imminent $10 billion a year cuts from the Navy.

Posted on August 2, 2011 at 11:56pmI wonder if the Chinese are doing to us what we did to the USSR back in the 80′s, but a bit more subtle. Artificially controlling their currency, artificially inflating their production and building ghost cities? Building up their military and activating a space program, all of these things are good for the Chinese, but bad for us. If we have to play catch-up with them soon, we may be done for.

Posted on August 2, 2011 at 8:45pmIn this area of Warfare….you are only as good as the last day you trained, deployed, wargamed etc. It doesn’t take long to loose these skills. It however takes much longer to hone them to a fine edge like our commited warriors at sea today. Their Carrier plans will not amount to much.

Posted on August 2, 2011 at 8:57pmUnfortunately, Rumsfeld wreaked out technical training. In his drive toward technology, he unwittingly destroyed the Navy’s ability to maintain its systems in a combat situation. Our Navy can no longer maintain its AEGIS system with the ship’s crew and needs specialists to come aboard to repair even simple problems. I got this information from a reliable DOD source.

Posted on August 2, 2011 at 9:38pmUnfortunately, they don‘t need to amount to much to take over the spot of ocean they’re after, and 3 is plenty against Nam, Thailand and the Philipines. The area in the South China sea they want is rich in petroleum resources…..they will fight for it. And with these carriers, combined with the already expanded Navy that they’ve been building for some time now, they will win it, and then control trade through this area. Some speak of a major war starting over this small region of ocean, and I can see that…maybe even nuclear. Watch this area closely, it’s possibly the most dangerous situation in modern history…..the potential is there.

Posted on August 2, 2011 at 9:55pmWell Chief, they really don’t need to be highly trained to throw their weight around and bully smaller countries with a great big aircraft carrier under their a s s. It’s about projection. Besides, who’s going to challenge them? Certainly not the obamanation.
Report Post »ChiefGeorge
Posted on August 2, 2011 at 8:42pmThats great!
Only one very big problem though….it will take a few decades until they can figure out how to use it in a operational way at sea, at night, refuel it on the move, protect it with other defensive ships i.e, the Battle Group. I wouldn’t worry about China too much in this area. We beat the Russians at this same game and the Japanese I might add. Our Naval Warfare in this area is unsurpassed and will remain so as long as the torch keeps getting passed along and the pipeline for Naval aviators stays strong and uncompromising.

Posted on August 2, 2011 at 8:52pmWe‘re dismantling our military at an incredible rate and what we don’t defund, we’re wasting in the Middle East. These wars have become a sham, but they still cost the same as when we actually had a mission in mind. With the technology that Clinton gave China, and the financial leverage that Obama is giving them, they could be a real threat in less than 10 years.

Posted on August 2, 2011 at 9:08pmWWII buddy… The Japanese were the best in the Pacific, but Midway changed all that. Don’t get over confident, and don‘t assume the Chinese won’t be capable of catching up to us soon.
Report Post »TheGreyPiper
Posted on August 2, 2011 at 9:20pmThere was a lot of luck and poor decisions at work at Midway. Looking at the hardware, Japan shoulda won that. The big mistake was whatsisname sending half the Imperial Navy towards the Aleutians as a diversion instead of slipping back in behind to grind us into razor blades.

Posted on August 2, 2011 at 9:21pmthat statement couldn’t be truer ATTENTION. we must learn from this. like Reagan said “a truly successful army is one that, because of its strength and ability and dedication, will not be called upon to fight, for no one will dare to provoke it”.

Posted on August 2, 2011 at 9:56pmThey, like we and every other nation, probably built the training facilities first….mockup bridges, mockup flight decks, mockup engine rooms…..they will be well trained years before launch, that‘s just how it’s done in modern Navies. 6 months minimum, they’ll have most of the bugs worked out and ready to fight.

Posted on August 3, 2011 at 9:40amWe currently have about 12 carriers on active duty, and those are charged with patrolling the entire globe, even if we pull them back to our borders you are only looking at 6 per seaboard.
Report Post »They are building 3 now that we know of, how many more do you think we have underway that we don’t know about? Remember that Chinese sub that “surprised” our navy a few years back?
Who do you think could churn out carriers faster, the Chinese or us? Remember sometimes quantity beats quality. In WWII the German tanks were vastly superior to our Sherman’s; however we overcame the technological advantage by cranking out 10 Sherman for every panther or tiger produced.
as for skill and experience, yes we have the upper hand there, but don’t forget prior to WWII our Navy was fairly green; It didn’t take us long to get up to speed, and it won’t take the Chinese very long either.
At the rate we are going we will be relying on the Chinese to provide us with the steel if not the entire ship.
HemiOwner
Posted on August 2, 2011 at 8:40pmThey don’t need to build any. They just need to sink or damage several of ours and we’re done for when it comes to naval power in the Western Pacific. Bye bye Taiwan.

Posted on August 2, 2011 at 10:10pmYour an idiot…… We got 40 ACFT Carriers and about 75 years of experience using them. 2 or 3 crude floating platforms the Chinese might be able to field, will simply be the first casualties in any future conflict…….. Our Submarine fleet will be tracking them from the very second they leave port, and they’ll NEVER be out of our reach….. We could just sink them at will, no problem………… OF much more import, is the Chinese Space Agency……. Since they have one…. and we don’t, they’ll surpass us in space technology in 10 years, then they’ll have us by the balls, say bye-bye spy-sattellites…….. THAT’s the scenario that scares me…… A Chinese ACFT carrier is a JOKE…… Just like the German, Soviet, and French Carriers of the past…… Wise up – FOOL !

Report Post »rabblechat
Posted on August 3, 2011 at 9:53am@Junkman, we do not have anywhere near 40 carriers on active duty of the 11 on active duty 4 of those are between 30-40 years old. Don’t forget they have subs too, remember about 3 years ago when the Chinese sub surfaced next to one of our battle groups? If it was junk how did it get there undetected?
Report Post »Not to mention the mysterious missile launch off of California last year where do you think that came from? And as your own post stated we started the pacific was with only 3 carriers, which is what they are building. It was our ability to crank out ships faster than the Japs that helped us win in the pacific.
Who do you think has the ability to build ships faster now, The Chinese or us?
With that being said I agree with you on the space program issue, once they have the ability to knock out or communication and observation satellites our navy’s technological advantage will be greatly reduced.

They have been building a large navy, new jets ( some stealth), and missles (anti ship), and are buying up oil and minerals all over the world. They are getting new ports of call all over the globe. They are becoming the new world super power, while we are indebted to them. I’ve said it for several years now. China wants Taiwan under its control and to be part of China. With us owing so much to them, they will offer a deal to Obama. Give them Taiwan for some of our debt, or they will take it. And what will Obama do???????? We have a treaty with Taiwan.
